On the Road

Well off they go to do their thing. Better help where I can.
Leiland then stands and begins walking in the direction of the trap, slamming his sword and shield together attempting to draw attention his direction.
"Come on out you! I know something's out here, let's see your face!"

Well, that's pretty rude, thinks Meht, when he sees the place his trap used to be.

He starts following the tracks, for the moment too annoyed to check what his companions are doing.

..then stops, remembering his companions don't know these woods and he can't very well leave them here. He turns back to catch their eye, wave for them to follow, and wait for them to catch up.

Whoever it was, they did not put any effort into covering their tracks, neither coming nor going along the same path. Following them should not be hard.
It does look like they used the noise as cover to run off, though. So the party will need to make haste if they intend to catch them.

Rook eventually wanders back to where he hears the woodsman's voice. "I found nothing." He says in a low tone. "Whoever was out here before is gone now, and I do not believe there is profit for us in chasing them. We should head back to the caravan."

OOC:
I'm conflicted - Meht could make a dash for whoever it was, but if both Rook and Leiland want to go join the caravan I am OK if we do that instead. OkumHart what are your thoughts?

OOC:
I am conflicted too, though I can't see the harm in pursuing this a bit further.
Leiland barges into the clearing still slamming his sword and shield together, but stops when he sees his companions standing with no trap in sight.
Well now I just look foolish
*Coughs into hand*"Well... whatever it was, has left I assume. Should we find your stolen prize Meht?"

Meht looks back and forth between Rook and Leiland for a moment, then points at the ground. "Yes, and quickly: they're running," he says, turning to jog along the tracks.

Rook jogged behind, hoping that they weren't being lured into a trap of some sort. This entire situation stunk of potential misery and woe and slim profits.

With all the talking, investigation and decision making you would expect your quarry to have a better head start, but it does not take long before you spot a figure ahead of you, running hunched over and breathing hard.

It appears to be an old woman, you see fear on her ashen, lined face as she glances over her shoulder at your group. She tries to run faster to get away, but it does not make much difference, if you continue at this rate you will catch up with her in less than a score of seconds.

Meht is surprised, but still wants to know what happened to his trap, so catches up to her.
OOC:
Is it someone Meht and Oli recognise, or a stranger? They'd be familiar with most people who frequent this part of the woods.

- Meht -
As you come within arms reach of the woman she drops into a defensive crouch and silently cowers before you.
Not only do you not recognise her, you have never seen anyone with such a grey skin color either.
Sep 3, 2021 1:03 am
What to do? thinks Meht. He feels in his jacket for Oli, but—unusually—gets no impression from him of trust or mistrust.

She's an elder though, and she looks unwell. And the morning's check of his other traps have netted he and his companions enough food for the moment.

"Greetings Aunty," says Meht. "I mean you no harm, and if you are hungry you can keep whatever was in my trap. But the trap itself is special to me and I would like it back."
Sep 3, 2021 11:58 am
Still looking terrified --and not at all mollified by your words which she does not even appear to have heard-- the woman silently and fearfully holds out a few rabbits and what appear to be all your remaining traps set in this direction.
She has obviously been making her way down the row, collecting traps and trapped along the way.
Sep 4, 2021 6:44 pm
OOC:
Would Leiland recognize her from town?
Sep 4, 2021 6:47 pm
None of you have ever seen the woman. Her ragged clothes do not look like anything you have seen before either.
Sep 4, 2021 9:55 pm
Meht's jaw drops when he realises what she's done. Sure trappers and poachers might filch the odd rabbit from a trap, carefully covering their tracks. But this? It's just.. not done in this forest, if one wants to avoid injury or worse.

But as Rook says, they have a caravan to catch up with.

He takes the proffered traps and rabbits, then hands two of the rabbits back to her.

"Perhaps your hunger overpowered your judgement, but I advise you to find another way to fill your belly in future. There are not many trappers in this forest who'd let this pass without injury."

To his companions he says, "Let us recover the nets and make haste."

- Meht -
The woman stares, uncomprehending, at your words, and flinches away when you try to hand her the two rabbits, dropping them on the ground, but then snatching them up and clutching them close to her cowering form as it becomes clear are leaving.
- all -
You know the road the caravan is set to take and should not have any difficulty catching up to it. Gathering up the nets won't make much difference to your lateness, and having some more fish to show for it will help your excuse.
Sep 6, 2021 12:52 am
Meht leads the way back to where the party first met, stopping on the way to retrieve the nets.
OOC:
Do I need to narrate in more detail than this, or is this OK? Am assuming we'll see whether it really has left yet before trying to track anything.
Sep 6, 2021 5:43 am
As the group walks back through the forest to rejoin the caravan, Leiland says "That was odd, not at all what I was prepared for. Should we ask around the caravan to see if any one has heard of an elderly woman going missing?"
