Assessing the Assassin

Aug 28, 2021 10:38 am
A master assassin has come out of retirement for one more job. Many would pay well to know who their target is.
How did you get involved with this case?
• Was it via Amancio, or a personal contact? Who?
• What do they want to get from this? What is their angle?

How long have we been a Crew?
• Have we worked cases together before? Give examples?
• Introduce aspects of your character as we see them.

Why do you personally care about this case?
• Do you think you know who the assassin is targeting? Do you want to save them? Why?
• Do you think you know who the assassin is? Do you want to help or stop them? Why?

Moon: Where are you living as we start?
• In the lair and in everybody's way?
• Squatting somewhere or on the streets?
• 'Couch surfing' with students in Charterhall?
Discuss in the OOC.

OOC:
Sorry if this is a bit uninspired writing wise, since my mind is a bit out of it right now. Going to try and use Jeren's position as an archivist in order to acquire some information about the assassin's past cases in the police records.
When they received the job from Amancio, Kristov's intuition told him that something was unusual about the master assassin's return to the trade. What exactly, wasn't clear. A myriad of motivations could be behind the action. Perhaps some personal reason was involved, or maybe their retirement savings simply ran out. What was clear however, was the need for more information regarding the assassin and their new job.

Though there were plenty of rumors afloat, it would be difficult to sort through them to discover the threads of truth tying them together, and discard the fog of misinformation. So Kristov would look at what little facts there were.

And so he paid a visit to Jeren, working at one of the archivists offices in Charterhall. An old, but lively, man, family friend of the Vale bookkeepers. Though most of his family and friends distanced themselves from Kristov after his turn to crime, Jeren remained as amiable as ever towards the young man, valuing his personal relationships above all other concerns.

Kristov's request to Jeren was to secretly lend him the case files for the assassin's past murders, in order to find any commonalities among them.
OOC:
Feel free to add any relevant rolls. I'm inclined towards rolling Study to represent Kristov's analysis.

"Now Kristov," Jaren says --the old habit of using your real name persisting. "You know I can not let you take those away. Not at a time like this with all the new interest happening. I am not ready to be retired, and my bosses would not hesitate to use the cover of an old assassin to cover their, shall we say 'terminal', 'retirement' of me."

He looks around nervously. "I am not even supposed to be showing you these." He holds a very thin-looking folder in his hand. "But, if you want to take a quick look here, I don't see the harm."
OOC:
If you want to quickly study the papers, make your suggested Study roll, but it will be Controlled/Limited since there is little risk, but also little time.

If you want to take the file away and have more time, you could try a Consort or Sway roll to get Jaren to allow it. It would probably be Risky/Standard.
OOC:
Are you alone here with Jaren or did you bring any of your Crew to help you?

"And here I was, thinking that you only worked as a hobby."

Kristov chuckles as he takes the folder. He frowns slightly as he opens it up.

"Isn't this a bit thin?"
OOC:
I don't really see any reason for anybody else to be here, unless someone wants to.

"Yeah, to support my eating and sleeping dry hobbies." Jaren jibes.

Then he sighs and shrugs, looking at the flimsy file. "I seem to recall there being more, decades ago. But it was all above my paygrade." He glances around nervously to make sure you are being overheard.

"I took a look at what is here while retrieving the file." He admits. "And something that rang a bell was the incidental mention of 'major Matheson'. I believe he was military," his voice drops even further at this last bit. "Though I can not think why they would be involved in internal matters like this, I swear I remember that he was conducting an investigation of his own, and checked out what files we had."

Jaren points to a receipt indicating that 'MM' 'borrowed' certain documents. "Since that is still here, it is possible he never returned what he 'borrowed'?" Jaren posits. "Though I can't say why no one followed up afterwards.

"It is a mystery." He admits. "And I am intrigued. You will let me know if you find anything, won't you?"

As a pretense, Kristov skims the file, before handing it back to Jeren. Nothing of interest stuck out to him, so it was likely that this Matheson fellow took everything good for himself.

"Hmm, won't lie Jeren, this major has hooked my interest as well. I can't guarantee any sort of truth, but expect a good story soon."
OOC:
And I think this is a good time to cut to the engagement roll.

Moon looked around to make sure they were alone before opening the door of the abandoned water deposit. Freck and Kristov followed her, and closed the door. Once inside the deposit, Moon led the way climbing down a ladder that went deep into Duskvol’s intricate network of sewers and underground tunnels.

Once they reached the tunnels, Moon lighted up a hooded lantern she had brought for the occasion. She checked their maps once again (although she had made sure to learn the route by heart before leaving their lair), and started walking. The dense atmosphere of those tunnels and the absolute silence, only interrupted by the occasional drip, always made her feel comfortable and secure. That was a good place to hide, a place where nobody would find her.

It was a long walk until they reached their destination. Another ladder, which theoretically and if their maps weren’t wrong, would lead to the backyard of Matheson’s manor, within his outside walls.

"Well, here we are. Ladies first, right?", she mocked, and started to climb up.

You all come up right where you expected, inside the perimeter and in the shadows. You can hear the guard in the hut at the gate speaking softly, though it is unclear to whom.

Your eyes adjust to the dark after the lantern. There is a light in a far corner of the house, but everything near you is quiet and dark. You guess that you have a minute or two to get your bearings and act before a patrol comes round.

How do you plan to get into the house?
Where does you intelligence say the files should be kept?

Kristov walked up to the door, and knocked softly, three times quick, two times long.

The day before...

At the counter of the bar, a servant sobs over a mug of beer, Kristov sitting next to him.

"I can't believe it. She was the only one for me."

Nodding solemnly, Kristov thoughtfully comforts the servant.

"Most people feel the same way you do when they find out. But you deserve better than that. She was only after your position, but didn't see that the real prize..."

Kristov lightly taps the man's chest.

"...was right here. A man of true quality."

The servant, sniffling, looks up at Kristov.

"...You think so?"

A smile crosses Kristov's face.

"Of course. After all, would a man of true quality deny his benefactor a favor promised?"
