Chapter 3 - Into the Wilds

Aug 29, 2021 10:49 pm
Back at the Townmaster's Hall you're once again greeted by the elderly elf behind the desk in the main hall. His tone as boring and monotone as the last time.

"Well done eradicating the threat posed by those cloaked hoodlums. I must admit my surprise seeing Iarno brought before us bound and gagged. It has come as quite a shock to Lord Hallwinter to learn of his dear friend's betrayal."

In one fluid motion the man effortlessly rises from his seat and then leads you down the short hall to Sildar's office. He pauses just outside the closed door and gives a slight bow to the group.

"Lord Hallwinter will see you now."

The elf opens the door, revealing Sildar seated at a large round table littered with maps and some of the items that Karma had grabbed from the wizard's desk. Seated on either side is Qeliine, who greets all of you with a large smile, and a fit looking, silver-haired half elf, who is dressed in old leather armor.

"Have a seat, my friends." Sildar says, motioning to remaining open seats about the table. "We have much to discuss."

Gerbo walks in and hikes up his belt before doing his best to look like an adult when he sits down in the smallest chair (which is still too big for him).
Aug 30, 2021 2:17 am
Karma follows Gerbo into the room gives a wave, "Dudes." He then slouches into a seat.
Aug 30, 2021 6:47 am
Kerisha stands in shock for a moment at the sight of Qelline. It takes a few seconds for her to realise she is staring, mouth slightly open at the halfling. She takes a seat and scans the room half expecting Carp to burst out and surprise them.

OOC:
Yay monies, I need to start a banking operation instead of an Ale operation. :D
"Hmm.. Great! I hope its about getting set up with a local town watch and getting this back into shape. What may I ask would you need a Guild Salesman for then?"

OOC:
Sorry, everyone. Day got away from me. I'll have something posted tomorrow afternoon!

"Until we can convince Harbin that there is an actual need for a town guard I'm afraid that is a battle not worth fighting at this time. While it is much to the benefit of the town that the Redbrands have been dealt with, Harbin will see their removal as yet another reason a town guard is not needed."

Sildar slowly shakes his head in disgust "The man is just thick in the head."

The half-elf to Sildar's left lets out a slight chuckle at the comment. "Harbin is what he is. A fine administrator for the town but as spineless as a jellyfish. We'll build a guard without him!"

Nodding in agreement Sildar turns his attention to the group gathered before him.

"Friends, while you were dealing with the traitor Iarno I have been talking to the townsfolks for any leads to Gundren's whereabouts. While I was unable to find anything concrete, I do believe these two might have some information that can send us in the right direction."

Sildar takes a seat and motions towards Qelline, "I believe you all know Miss Alderleaf."

Qelline stands on her chair and smiles before telling everyone what she knows.

"Your friend Orel had come to my farmhouse badly injured and while I did what I could, I thought it best that we visit Sister Garele at the Shrine of Luck. As we were about to leave we were joined by Mirna and her children. Mirna told me that you had rescued her and mentioned that she felt bad about having nothing to reward you with other than an heirloom of hers still at Thundertree."

"That's when I remembered an old friend of mine named Reidoth of mine who said that he was going to station himself in the ruins out there to continue some of his druidic studies. The man knows every inch of the wilds from here up to Neverwinter... and probably more. Find him and I'm sure he can tell you how to get to that castle Sir Hallwinter said you're all looking for! Then all yo...."

"Certainly worth investigating... the half-elf interrupts, abruptly standing from his chair. Qelline shoots the man a quick glare before resigning herself to her seat.

"...if your willing to rely on finding a traveling druid who will more than likely be off in the woods sniffing tree bark. I think the more reasonable approach would be to find the banshee Agatha at her lair near Conyberry and ask her. She's easy to find and all you'd need to do is present her with a reasonable gift in exchange to the answer for a single question. Visit the good Sister, as I believe she has a gift that would be perfect for this."

The man then takes his seat and Sildar chimes in.

"What I'd like for you to do, highly skilled Guild Salesmen included, is to choose one of the leads to chase down and see what you can find out. I can outfit you with needed equipment for time on the march if needed."
OOC:
Lots of word salad for "A or B", but there ya go.
Feel free to ask questions of the three or whatever you'd like as well.
Both Thundertree and Conyberry are two day's travel - in opposite directions.

Karma perks up at the mention on bark sniffing, "Woo on the bark sniffa Mr Negativa! Nothing wrong with a little communication with nature, you might benefit from inner chill it gives one." the Dwarf Cleric says holding a hand up to the Half Elf, "Sweet Dudette Qeline tells about the good nature loving friend of yours, he sounds like a man with good mojo."
Sep 2, 2021 3:14 pm
"Of course" Qelline responds, once again standing on her chair.

"The druid Reidoth is an old friend of mine who spends much of his time in the Neverwinter Wood exploring and communing with nature. He's a good man - with good mojo as you say. Friendly as they come but he don't talk much. If anyone would know the location of a hidden castle or temple or whatever in those woods it would be Reidoth. Last time he was at the farm he told me he was heading to Thundertree to spend some time in the ruins - and that was just a single tenday ago, I'm sure he's still there."

Gerbo screws up his face at hearing about a banshee. "For some reason, I'm more inclined to try the druid than the banshee.
Belly? Kerisha? What do you think? Sounds like Karma's on board.
A shiver runs up his spine, which he does his best to hide.
OOC:
Gerbo doesn't like the spookies. Btw, let me know if it annoys you OOC that Gerbo has a nickname for you IC, Belanor. I meant for Gerbo to be kind of a prick, but it's meant to annoy the character, not the player. If it annoys you, I will stop.

"What's a banshee? It doesn't sound pleasant. And I know we were ambushed on our way down from Neverwinter. It would make sense that Gundren would be in that area so I think we should to the one for the woods nearby. Belanor suggests.
OOC:
druid in the neverwinter woods is my idea
Sep 3, 2021 7:19 pm
Kerishia is not pleased at the half-elf speaking over her friend. Her fist clenches, but she checks herself at the prospect of going back into the woods.
"Qelline, thank you for helping Orel. If you say druid in woods can help, then we will find him."
Sep 6, 2021 2:58 pm
The half-elf mutters to himself as everyone expresses their opinion as to the next course of action.

"That's enough, Daran." Sildar says to the man. "Given those two choices I would have made the same decision as they have."

"Very well, my friends. Please ready yourselves for the trip and head out as soon as you can. I fear the longer that Gundren is held, the worse off his fate may be."
OOC:
Is everyone prepped and ready for the trip? Any last minute stops at the stores? Anything else to add to the folks gathered here?

The trip will take about two days through the high grassland just west of the Neverwinter Wood.

With their business concluded, Gerbo heads back to Barthen's Provisionswith fresh money jingling in his pockets and a gleam in his eye. Before walking in, he does his best to clean blood and dirt off his armor with the sleeve of his shirt. When he gets there, he sidles up to the counter, "Well, my friend, I would like to do some business. I am looking at stepping up my gear a little. What would you give me for this gently-used leather armor, a shortbow, and 22 arrows? I'm looking to trade for a couple things and I would like to offer for trade-in some 'starter equipment' for the people of the town as well." As he says this, he scans the shelves for studded leather armor, a component pouch, a hand crossbow (and bolts).

I would like to trade the light crossbow in as well as sell you this ring and chain, in exchange I am looking for some sweet healing potions and a couple of hammers I can throw."
OOC:

"Unfortunately Phandalin, as of yet, does not have a stable. I'm afraid your trip will have to be made on foot." Sildar responds to Belanor's query.
Qelline happily returns Karma's thumbs up, while Sildar smiles and nods. Daran, however, simply glares and crosses his arms in front of his chest.
At Barthen's Provisions, Elmar explains that while he can't pay much for the used equipment, that any new items that anyone in the group wishes to purchase will come at a 30% discount for "Finally taking care of those bastard Redbrands!"
OOC:
Any items sold to Elmar will fetch half the book cost. Jewelry and the like will fetch the full value. Any weapons, armor, or other equipment purchased will come with a 30% discount.

Regular crossbow bolts will not work with a Hand Crossbow, Gerbo will have to stock up on bolts specifically for the weapon.

Qelline gifted the group 8 healing potions before you ventured into the manor. Not sure how many were used, but I'm guessing the group has quite a few left.

"Well then. Best look into to some good walking wear if you don't have any." Belanor says to noone in particular but in reference to the group.
Belanor will make way to the trading post to see what they have. Seeing that most of the gear that Belanor has is on par if not better he'll procure another set of traveling boots and stockings.

"One needs to think about setting up some kind of accessible storage device that I could leave somewhere and access it at will.." Belanor mumbles to himself as he hands the man the coins for the traveling boots.
OOC:
I'm guessing traveling gear would have that along with a suitable set of boots and clothes for road ware XD Belanor has no problem paying to 2g for the set even if they insist not to.

After a little back and forth, Gerbo spits on his hand and offers it up to Elmar to close the deal. "Pleasure doing business with you!" He looks down at the small hand crossbow and tweaks at one of the screws a little before strapping it onto his pack. Stowing the rest of the gear, he heads outside to wait for his companions. While he waits, he pulls the hand crossbow out and continues to fiddle around with it some more.

Kerisha is back looking at the armor while Gerbo and Karma are spending their earnings. She feels the weight of her coin purse and then the thinness of her armor. She pulls down the Scale Mail and drops it on the counter. It may well slow her down, but at least she can take a harder hit and still be standing. And if she is standing then she can hit back.

Dusk is quickly approaching as you catch your first glimpse of the Neverwinter Wood on the northern horizon. According to what Qelline had told you before leaving, the easiest way to find the ruins of Thundertree was to follow the western edge of the wood while keeping the tree line just in view and that after two days travel you'd arrive.

The six hours since leaving Phandalin has been relatively uneventful, save for a minor incident with a few wayward goblins that ended very badly for the trio; but did allow Kerisha to make an addition to her necklace. Now, surrounded by the tall grass waving gently in the breeze, things are looking good...

Suddenly two spiked tentacles strike from the grass, one catching Belanor across the back and the other slamming into Kerisha's thigh. A large black cat-like beast springs up and quickly withdrawals before turning back to face its prey. Its glowing green eyes seem to dance back and forth but it's not quite clear if the creature is actually moving.
OOC:
Kerisha has taken 10 damage (7 pierce, 3 bludgeon)

Kerisha is quite happily trudging along counting the additions to her goblin necklace, until the searing pain shoots through her leg. She falls to a knee. Looking up to see the beast, she is seeing double. The pain must be affecting her vision.

She sees the beast smouldering from Belanor's blast and it comes into a bit clearer focus. She wont be able to cover the distance, especially not with her wounded leg, so she takes out one of her javelins. Her vision blurs again. "Not nearly dead enough, yet." Gerbo growls quietly through gritted teeth, backing up very carefully as he loads the hand crossbow again, until he is about 20 feet away from the beast. He takes aim, holding his breath, and releases as he pulls the trigger, hoping to put the creature down for good.

Kerisha pulls herself up straight to see the beast retreating. As much as the Gruumsh worshiping side of her wants to hunt the beast down, get the kill and wear the beasts tail with pride, she preys the beast finds waters blessed by Eldath so that it can heal and recover. Kerisha has always felt that connection with nature, and deep in her heart she feels The Green Goddess protected her when she was out in the wilds. Kerisha always thinks back to that bear drinking from the same stream, almost as if Eldath had manifested herself as the bear to guide her and inspire her.

That beasts tail would make a lovely belt though...

As the beast retreats Karma retrieves his thrown hammer and shakes his head, "That was one cranky cat. Anyone hurt?"
Sep 19, 2021 3:59 pm
Gerbo walks around retrieving bolts, mumbling to himself. "Damn thing ruined my favorite shirt." Pulling his shirt open, he winces as he feels his muscles ache. "I'm not bleeding, but it hurts. That bugger packed a punch."

Kerisha grasps at her leg. She doesn't want to show she is injured, but that did sting a bit. Standing up tall and taking a deep breath in.

Water is a little harder to come by and takes her a bit further out from the others, but her well trained ears make out the sounds of a small spring bubbling up from the ground close by.

While filling her and her companions' water skins with the cool, fresh water, Kerisha catches a glimpse of something in the distance. A pair of familiar glowing green eyes watch from well out of striking distance, dancing quickly from side to side.

Catching a glimpse of the eyes watching her, Kerisha calmly finishes filling the water skins before taking one of the large rabbits that have been strung over her shoulder. She looks into the green eyes as she carefully places the rabbit down next to the water as a peace offering. Kerisha takes a few steps backwards, waiting for a moment to see if the beast approaches. She gives the beast a toothy smile and a friendly nod before turning to head back to camp.

Kerisha is careful on her return to camp. She is aware the beast is following, but thinks if it wanted to attack her then it would have done so by now.

"Beast has followed me but not attacked. I take first watch. Will try to speak with beast. Do not attack it."

Kerisha sits on a nearby log and tries to concentrate on the natural world around her. Its always been hard for her to supress that inner barbarian rage, but she found some element of peace in the forest. Breathing slow and deep, she concentrates on the beast. On how its fighting for survival, for food, defending itself, just like she did.

It takes some time, but she finally feels ready...

"Are you hurt? You want more food? We sorry for attacking you, we just looking for someone."

He stuffs it roughly back into his bag before strapping on his belt and moving over to sit on a short rock by the fire. "I guess I'm up. Might as well stay up." He says grouchily. He stokes the fire back to life and pulls out a small cup from his mess kit. He pours some water from a skin into it and sets it on a spot near the fire. Gerbo and Belanor chat until the sun starts to peek above the horizon, the early morning hours passing by without incident. Breaking camp is a quick affair and it isn't long before you're on the move along the western edge of the Neverwinter Wood.

The morning's travel is pleasant enough with a cool, gentle breeze from the coast waving through the tall grass and the bright sun shining overhead. By mid-afternoon, however, the weather starts to change. Clouds start to roll in and rain starts to fall; slowly at first, but as you're nearing your destination, the heavens open up.

Trudging through the increasingly muddy fields you come upon a barely noticeable trail which gradually becomes an old, overgrown lane winding between dilapidated buildings choked in vines and brush. Ahead of you, in the middle of the settlement, rises a steep hill, upon which stands a stone tower with a partially collapsed roof and an adjoining cottage. A dirt road hugs the base of the hill and wends its way between old stone houses, many of which are roofless ruins with interiors open to the
weather. Other buildings appear more or less intact. The whole place is eerily silent.

A wooden sign is nailed to a post nearby. It reads:

"DANGER! Plant monsters AND zombies! Turn back now!"

Just underneath the sign, shivering wet, is a small grey squirrel. Surprised by your presence the furry creature tries to make a break for it, but can only manage to limp about a foot before coming to rest in a puddle.

She is quiet as the group move on towards the ruins, reflecting on what she could have done for the beast. Kerisha is then in awe at seeing Karma speak to the terrified little squirrel. He is a master of nature. One that she must learn from.

"How did you do that? Did not work with beast."

It wasn't long after its appearance that masked, robbed individuals appeared on the eastern edge. Why they are here I have yet to determine."

The man walks to each of you in turn and offers some tea.

"The dragon is my biggest concern. If it establishes a den here it will be within striking distance of The High Road and can wreak havoc on unprepared travelers. It's still young, and its threat will only increase as it ages."

Gerbo adjusts his position on the chair, resting his legs up on the arm of the chair. "What harm is this dragon doing? No one lives here anymore, present company excluded. In any case, if we decided to help you get rid of the dragon, do you have any more information on it? I'm not keen on dying in a fool's errand going against something that every one of my instincts tells me to avoid, unless you have some information that would assist us. Luck favors the prepared, after all."

Gerbo pulls out his tinker tools and starts absent-mindedly fiddling with something to keep his hands occupied.

"It is not what threat the dragon is now, it is what type of threat it will grow to be. It is still young and it will be easier dealt with because of it."

Letting out a long sigh, Reidoth leans back in his chair.

"Perhaps the dragon is too much to deal with for now." the druid concedes. "You will have your hands full as it is."

Kerisha is restless. Thoughts racing through her mind. The group must find Gundren. But these cultist seem like trouble. Not to mention the dragon that is slowly growing to be more powerful. There are friends she has left behind already hurt. Friends around her now she must protect. When this dragon grows will it start to destroy more towns? Will Qelline and Carp be in danger?

Her list of things to do is growing beyond what she expected.

After a quiet eveing the light of the sun streaking through the shuttered windows eases you awake. Reidoth has already started his day and offers everyone some tea while he skethes out a map to the location of Cragmaw Castle.

"It's a good day's travel from here and will take you well into Neverwinter Wood. It won't be without its dangers, but I doubt it will be anything you can't handle. As for the item that you've come to collect there is a building two east of here that may contain what you're looking for."

As you open the door to take your leave of Reidoth's your greeted with a rush of fresh morning air; quite a contrast to druid's stuffy, but comfortable abode. The night's rain has turned the path through the ruins into a muddy mess, not enough to slow your pace, but just enough to easily be splashed onto clothing.

To your north, at the top of hill, stands a round tower with a cottage attached. Both are in good condition, although half of the tower's roof is gone.

To your south is a ruined building which may have been a store or workshop. Webs stretch across the path from the building to the trees on the North side of the road.

"Isn't the trinket in a building?"

"Lets hope dragon not return" Kerisha mutters to Karma after the men have departed. She remains on high alert for spiders, but now throws nature and undead into the mix. She never thought she would have to guard against nature. "Be quick. We have lot to do." She presses on after Karma towards the trinket.
Nov 3, 2021 9:26 pm
After the men take their leave you push on across the path through some more of the still wet thickets and undergrowth before quickly coming to another well worn pathway. A quick look around reveals that everything appears to be safe and the building that Reidoth had pointed out on the map is now in sight.

The ruined shop is cluttered with sagging storage shelves and broken furniture. Shards of glass and pieces of pottery glint in the weeds and rubble next to rotted books and casks. If Mirna's heirloom is still here, it must be well hidden among the debris.

You are able to leave the ruins of Thundertree without encountering any of the nasties that Reidoth had warned you about and have started your journey through the grasslands to Cragmaw Castle. The morning sun continues to rise, removing any moisture from the tall grass left over from the previous night's rain. And while the ground is still wet, the further you get from the Thundertree the less the mud seems to affect your travel.

It's just about noon when you reach the edge of Neverwinter Wood. The tall trees allow a filtering of light through and the undergrowth, at least in this part of the wood, is nearly non-existent, making for easy travel over the light ground covering of old leaves and vines.

About and hour into the woods you can hear multiple deep, rough voices barking out to each other in the distance in some sort of Goblinoid tongue. Seconds later both Belanor and Gerbo catch glimpses of movement from either side of the group.

Nearly tripping from the expected clash that never occurred the warrior mumbles in confusion only to be struck in the back with a bolt of fire courtesy of the once hidden Belanor.

"I'm sorry", Belanor quickly let's out as he runs past the hobgob that Gerbo guts.

He heads towards the way they came thinking there's not more that direction.

Turning about, Belanor draws his short sword hoping it would be a deterrent against others.

He'll raise his hand letting loose another fire bolt at an upright hobgob.

Teaming up on a single Hobgoblin both Karma and Belanor launch their attacks. The sorcerer's bolt fires wide and slams into the ground where some of the downed leaves start to smolder.

Karma's hammer flies true, but the Hobgoblin is able to raise his shield in time to absorb the blow.

Kerisha turns her attention to the oncoming duo. With Gerbo at her side, she feels a rush of feelings. She is overwhelmed to be fighting alongside others...alongside friends. With a giant bear like roar, she rushes forwards to the hobgoblins, meeting them head on, sword held high.

Feeling confident after quickly dispatching one of the attackers with a single blow, Kerisha charges headlong into battle. Swinging downwards with full force at the first Hobgoblin that comes within range, the Barbarian's attack is deftly brushed to the side with skillful use of a shield. With her blade striking nothing but wet leaves and moist dirt, the two Hobgoblins quickly counter, each striking painful blows with their longswords.

The final attacker rushes in from the left and spots the little Rogue who struck down his companion. With a primal yell it charges forward and takes a sweeping, backhanded swing with its sword, slicing across Gerbo's chest.
OOC:

His nerves still getting the better of the Sorceror, Belanor's bolt of fire misses high and continues its flight off into the distance. Hoping for better luck Karma moves in and takes a powerful swing, but the shield defense of his opponent once again deflects his attack.

With her bear totem on rage, Kerisha would take half damage, @Szemely are you rounding up or down? I know PHB states round down, so that would be 9 damage so far
[ +- ] Totem Spirit 1 - Bear
The hobgoblin swords cut into Kerisha, but her skin seems thinker than they might expect, and the wounds are not as deep as they should have been. The strikes fuel her rage, and as Gerbo lashes out from the shadows at one, she brings her sword down at the other foe standing in her way, but her blind rage means she gets nothing but wet leaves and mud once more.

Once again Gerbo's blade sinks deep into his opponent, piercing the chain armor and impaling the Hobgoblin's stomach. It screeches in pain, barely able to keep to its feet, but somehow manages to stay in the fight. It counters with a weak swing that completly misses the nimble rogue.

While Kerisha and her opponent trade misses, Karma is unable to dodge a Hobgoblin's longsword, which catches him high on the shoulder.

After backstepping to use avoid the weak swing, Gerbo counters with another stab, this one aimed at the Hobgoblin's armpit. As he steps forward, he gets too confident, and his foot slips on a rock. He starts to feel himself falling forward, so he allows his stumble to carry him forward and away from the hobgoblins reach. While he carries forward, he sheaths his rapier.
OOC:
Attack/miss, disengage, run past and forward more to get to 15 feet from hobbies, then use free item interaction to stow rapier. Not sure if you do something with the nat 1 or just make it a miss.

The Cleric takes another mighty swing with his hammer and this time the Hobgoblin misreads the attack, taking the full brunt of Karma's swing. The sounds of ribs cracking is followed by a quiet whimper as the goblinoid keels over and rolls sideways onto the ground.

Bark splinters and flies like shrapnel through the air as Belanor takes out his aggression on an innocent tree.

Having had has attack easily parried, Gerbo removes himself from danger, leaving Kerisha to face the last two enemies on her own.

Not backing down from the fight Kerisha disposes the stronger of the two remaining enemies with gory ease. The last of the Hobgoblins, covered in his companion's blood, takes a quick lunge at the Barbarian with his longsword, only to be met with a fist to the face, knocking him flat onto his back.
OOC:
The remaining Hobgoblin only had 1 HP left, so I took the liberty of having Kerisha just finishing him off.

All threats have been eliminated. Carry on towards the castle, heal/rest, or something else?

Kerisha stands a bloody mess above the remains of the hobgoblins. Like a momma bear protecting her cubs, she looks around for any more danger before finally calming down. Breathing heavy she checks her wound. Another scar for the collection.
OOC:
I'll go with what everyone else wants to do. Only lost 9hp surprisingly so still feeling pretty good for now.

Gerbo, who was reaching for his hand crossbow, let's it back down and pulls his rapier out to begin cleaning it on his shirt. The large black specter takes a bow, waves, and disappears in a poof. "That was fun. Anyone else good with a quick breather?
He settles onto a stump to catch his breath.

Belanor stows his weapon.
Yes, worked like a charm. They didn't want to come near me cause of the sword. I'll have to think Jamal when I'm back in waterdeep.

"I'm not against that but the longer we wait the harder it may become to find Grundar I would think." Belanor says returning to the group.

Gerbo digs in his pack a bit and pulls out his tea pouch from his bag, grabs a crumpled leave, crushes it up, spits in his hands and rubs the mixture in his wound. With the remainder left on his fingers, he rubs his fingers along his gums and stands up.

Tying his pack up, he picks it up and starts walking. "I'll be fine"" He says grumpily.
OOC:
FYI, this isn't in character grumping about me being pissy OOC or anything. I'm good with moving on to the castle.
