Though Max directed his question Samantha, it's Claudine who responds. "No, it's been quiet since leaving the house. No activity." She looks at her daughter but stops talking when she sees Samantha's expression. The teenager gives her mother a guilty look and turns to face Max.

"She's... visited me once at the hotel. She followed me," says Samantha. She looks to her mother, apologetically. "I'm sorry. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to scare you. She came while you were sleeping."

Derek walks by everyone and heads directly into the pantry. The pantry is essentially a large walk-in closet replete with shelves of canned goods, dishware, folded towels, and various other supplies. One small ceiling light with a pull chain illuminates the darkened room. As Derek taps around on the floor, one portion does sound slightly less solid than the rest of the tiles.

At the Sin-Eater's inquiry about tools, Claudine responds but looks confused. "Um... yes, I believe we have tools in the backyard shed. Why?"
Sep 24, 2021 8:12 pm
Jérôme glares at Derek. "Yes, there was a trap door
when we moved in. Apparently, it had something to do with bootlegging. It was built in the 1920s; not part of the original design of the house."
He glances around at the rest of you. "This home has no basement. The trap door led to an empty crawl space under the house. It's just dirt and silt down there. Maybe some debris from past floods."

Jérôme shifts his focus back to Derek. "Don't even think about tearing up that floor. Indulging your ghost hunt is one thing. Letting you destroy our home is entirely another."
Sep 24, 2021 8:13 pm
Seeing her husband's temper begin to rise, Claudine wisely intercedes. "Mr. Sixkiller isn't wrong. You can get under the house from outside. Although most of the space beneath the house is filled in by dirt. You'd need to dig your way through."
Sep 24, 2021 11:46 pm
Okay. In that case, Derek and I can try to see what's underneath the house if you two want to come with us or continue the interview & investigation up here... Jay offered to see where their interests lay.
C'mon, Derek. I'll dig if you Architect. I've got an LED lantern in the back of my truck and we can use the tools in the Guillory's shed. He took off his leather jacket and draped it over a high backed stool at the Guillory's kitchen island.

Samantha's admission that Ruby had followed her to the hotel wasn't lost on Max. Although, the tempers rising in the room again did manage to eclipse the moment. Before the situation got completely out of control, Mrs. Guillory confirmed Jay's theory that the space underneath the house could be accessed from outside the home.

That's good to know, Mrs. Guillory. Thank you. We can't be sure yet, but we may very well need to have a look down there before all is said and done. Of course," Max continued, shifting his attention to Mr. Guillory. "while we would have exhausted all other options before taking such a drastic step as to ask permission to cut a hole in your kitchen floor. I am glad to know that it won't be necessary to do so."

Before he turned his attention back to Samantha, he gave Derek a look that might as well have begged the architect to exercise a little more self-restraint. There was little chance, now, that Mr. Guillory would leave the Crossroad Kings alone in his home; however, given the latest from Samantha, maybe it was no longer necessary to do so.

"I'm sorry, Samantha. When you say Ruby followed you, do you mean that literally or just that she managed to find you at the hotel somehow and appeared as she has done here?", Max asked. This wasn't good news, either way.
Sep 25, 2021 2:27 am
Samantha looks at Max. "She managed to find me at the hotel. She said that... no matter where I went, she'd be able to find me."

Adriana fidgets with her bracelet again, as leans up against the kitchen island. "Samantha, do you have or carry something with you that you may have found in the house when you and your parents moved in here or something given to you, and antique maybe like my bracelet, that you rarely leave behind? Spirits attach themselves to such items."

Samantha thinks for a moment. Then she shakes her head. "No, I don’t think so. Most of the dead people that I see… they’re stuck to certain places. They can’t leave. But Ruby… she’s different. She comes and goes from this house as she pleases. Like I said, I’ve never seen ghosts that can do what she does."

The teenager surveys the room, cautiously. "I… don’t think she’s here right now. But I’m not sure."

"Works for me I figure we should check just in case."

Samantha's response causes a lump to form in Max's throat that only grew larger after the child answered Adriana's question.

"I'm sorry. Would you excuse Adriana and me for a moment, please?"

His tone was polite, but he didn't wait for their response before he placed a hand gently on Adriana's left arm and guided her a few steps away from the family.

"I don't like to think about the implications of that," he whispered to Adriana. "I thought that we would have time in the house here, with her safe at a hotel, but there's no point sending her away if Ruby can just follow along. This isn't something that I would ask under normal circumstances, but someone needs to stay with Samantha and I don't imagine that her father would be too keen on the idea of Derek, Jay, or I sleeping in the room with her. I'll try to clear one of us sleeping on the couch, and we can bring Roch over, too, so you wouldn't be completely on your own, but..."

Max knew that it was a big ask. The danger to Samantha was real and he was suggesting that Adriana be the girl's first line of defense. He didn't like it, but he couldn't come up with another option.

Nodding an affirmative, Adriana glances back to Samantha and replies in a semi-whispered volume to Max. "..Yes. Someone needs stay close to our sensitive. We do our best to keep her safe."
Sep 25, 2021 8:04 pm
Max smiled at Adriana and said, "You'll be fine. You both will."

He gave her an encouraging pat on the back and then turned to face the Guillorys. "I'm sorry about that," he said, "but it turns out that we won't need very long to come to an agreement on how best to move forward after all."

"My initial thought was to recommend that you and Samantha continue to stay at the hotel, but that was based on the assumption that Ruby wouldn't be able to leave here. It is not unheard of for a ghost to be able to move around as Ruby seems to do, but it is unusual. I had hoped that my team and I would be able to spend a few nights here in the house. I realize that it may be a little awkward, but it is necessary. The better we can get to know Ruby, the better we are able to help you."

"Works for me I figure we should check just in case."
Well, that's settled. I'll grab the lantern if Mr. Guillory will open up the toolshed and show you how to access underneath the house. I'll meet you there. Jay excused himself and made his way outside to his truck to retrieve the lantern. As many times as he found himself digging things up in the middle of the night it was no small wonder he didn't keep digging tools in his truck...
Lighting the powerful little lantern, he walked around the foundation of the Guillory's home until he found the two other men. Lantern in one hand, battered porcelain coffee mug - the kind ubiquitous to greasy spoon diners- in the other, he held the lantern high to provide enough light for them to see. He took a bit of the dry tobacco and sage mixture from the coffee cup and scattered it along the ground. Always put down some tobacco as respect for the dead; sage for protection from those that wish us harm. He lit the top of the aromatic mixture and let it smoulder, And the smoke to cover the smell of basements and crawlspaces, yeah?

Jay and Derek

Mr. Guillory grudgingly escorts Derek through the rear door of the kitchen. As you step outside into the muggy nighttime air of New Orleans, several wall-mounted motion sensor lights bring sudden illumination. The lights are bright enough to make you wince slightly until your eyes adjust.

The walled backyard of the Guillory House is not terribly big, but in a congested residential neighborhood such as Carrollton, they rarely are. You find yourself standing on a brick patio furnished with black iron cafe tables and chairs. Surrounding you are trestles of flowering vines and plant beds of camellias, rose bushes, magnolias, irises, and other lush greenery. Enclosing the backyard is a high rock wall overgrown with hanging ivy and Spanish moss. Passed the wall, you see the upper floors of the adjacent houses. Somewhere, perhaps from a neighbor's yard, you hear the soft sound of bubbling water.

Mr. Guillory gestures to a small storage shed set in one of the back corners of the yard. When you open the shed door, you are struck by the smell of cut grass and gasoline. The light inside the galvanized metal shed is dim, but it's enough to get the job done. Aside from a lawnmower, bags of birdfeed, cans of paint, empty pots, lawn furniture, and other assorted supplies, you locate a plethora of tools. They are mostly of the gardening variety: shovels, trimmers, spades, rakes, etc., as well as various power tools and construction tools. You are quickly able to acquire the necessary shovels.

Derek and Jérôme meet up with Jay at the west side of the house. Almost the entire perimeter of the home is lined with beds of shrubs and flowers, but you are able to locate a gap in the plant bed that's large enough to accommodate your digging. Beyond the decorative foliage lining the house's base, you see the support pillars that raise the house up. They are stubby brick piers that are spaced every six feet and elevate the house about half a story above the ground. It's a fairly common design feature in French Creole architecture. In the five-foot high space between the ground and the floor of the house, there is a wall of packed dirt.

OOC:
The above picture is to provide an idea of what the piers raising the house would look like.
The dirt is uneven in many spots. Some of it is spilling out from under the house. The more you look at the dirt, the less it seems to have been placed there purposely. Rather, it looks like soil, silt, clay, and mud that has accumulated from over a century of flood water deposits. The dirt even has the same orange-brown color as the sediment of the muddy Mississippi - a color most New Orleanians know well.

Jay performs his ritual with the tobacco and sage. Jérôme observes closely but says nothing. Both of you grab shovels and begin to dig. You scoop out the dirt and heft it into a pile behind you. Each of you can feel Jérôme watching for a moment. Then, surprisingly, Mr. Guillory removes his jacket and places it onto a nearby bush. He unbuttons the cuffs of his dress shirt and works the sleeves down to his elbows. He then grabs a shovel for himself and proceeds to join in.

Adriana and Max

Claudine thinks for a moment, and then nods. "That's fine. It's not a problem. Whatever you need. We have plenty of space." She motions down the hall and to the second floor. "We have two guest rooms on this floor, and another one upstairs. Unfortunately, because there are four of you, that means two of you will need to share a room, unless someone wants to take the couch in the parlor."

"I'll start getting the beds ready." Unless anyone has anything else to say to her, Claudine hurries off. She suddenly appears energized and focused. Having something comfortable to do - something to take her mind off of the haunting - is clearly a welcomed respite for her. Even if it's only to prepare a few rooms for guests.

Once her mother is gone, Samantha studies both of you; her body tensing whenever she notices any overt movement from one of your geists. Her psychic perception, whatever it is, seems imperfect. Sometimes she appears to glimpse things, and other times she doesn't. It may be the result of her abilities being undeveloped given her young age, or it could have to do with the medication that she's taking. Many mood-altering pharmaceuticals are known to have a damping effect on extrasensory perception.

Samantha finally works her way closer to Adriana. She speaks quietly, as though not wanting her mother to hear. "So how does this work? Do you need to do an exorcism? Do you trap the ghosts? I'm guessing that it doesn't work like the Ghost Busters?" She has a second thought and then raises an eyebrow. "Or does it?"
Sep 26, 2021 6:35 am
Max rushes to catch up with Mrs. Guillory, leaving Adriana to speak with Samantha alone for a moment.

"That's really not necessary, Mrs. Guillory. Thank you, though."

"I don't know if Jay and Derek will stay, or not. They may have other avenues to explore. If that isn't the case, then I expect that we will take turns going home to sleep. We need to be alert while we are here."

"Adriana has agreed to stay with Samantha, if you will allow it, to keep watch over her while she sleeps. Any of the rest of us who are here will stay primarily in the kitchen. Those are the two rooms that Ruby seems to frequent. So, those are the rooms that we will focus our attention on. We might trouble you for the use of your coffee pot, but there is no need to prepare guest rooms for us."
