Hello, this is my first time here and it is really nice to see you all. I am not much of a forum person, and to be honest posting anything on the internet terrifies me to my shivering bones. I hope you bear with me, and I hope I can tell you a good story.
That said, I would prefer to show rather than tell. So I would like to just dump some information and if the game sounds like you would be interested then please send me a message.
Some info about me, I have done some private PbP games before, and I really love lower magic and narrative-heavy adventures.
I would like this space to be suitable for new players and for people who might have seen Saltmarsh before. So we will be drifting through a very vanilla telling of the modules of Saltmarsh - run backwards.
This is so that anyone who has played through or run Saltmarsh can enjoy the setting and book without fear of their meta-knowledge spoiling the game, and new players can experience the tone, environments, and stories contained within.
My eye will most likely fall on the darker, more eldritch themes of Saltmarsh. Since Saltmarsh can lean into the horror elements of the story; investigation, negotiation, and problem-solving are incentivised rather than attempting to face dangerous enemies in combat. I am hoping a less combat heavy experience will lend itself well to PbP.
Understandably therefore, this is not a high magic story. If you would like to sling fireballs at hydra on the high seas then this might not be the story you are looking for.
High-fantasy, magic-heavy races might feel incongruent with the rest of the story and setting of Saltmarsh, so should probably be avoided. Since this will lean on the horror elements of Saltmarsh and most encounters will not be combat, levelling should not really be a priority. If you enjoy playing lower levelled characters with no items more obscure than rare then this should work. Level eight is the new level twenty.
To keep it accessible for newer players, and to keep it simple for those who prefer that, stick to the Players Handbook, although exceptions will readily be allowed. We will be using point buy or standard spread. Variant Human and feats are allowed. I will make sure they get use. Especially if they are more roleplay heavy, such as observant, linguist, or healer.
On account of the horror and angst elements, we will be using the traffic light system to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable when playing. For example, saying -yellow- will ensure the encounter will not get any darker, -red- will end the situation immediately in a narrative-friendly way. These will be accepted non-judgementally by all players and can be sent privately. Content warnings will be provided.
We will be starting at level 1. If you have any questions or requests, please feel free to message me.
Please send an application and a message, for me to talk to you briefly before we begin. It is important to me that everyone can get along and be excellent to each other.
The game is very lgbt friendly, and I will endeavour to be as welcoming as I possibly can to any marginalised groups.
While the eldritch horror of Saltmarsh does dip into some of the fishing-hamlet / Innsmouth tropes set down by Lovecraft; I deeply disagree with the meaning and message implicitly included in his writing. Aberrations were based on the myopic, and xenophobic views of Lovecraft - I am queer and relate to the genre not out of fear of "The Other" but association with it. This will be reflected in the story. The oldest and strongest emotion of humanity is not fear.
I have included all this information in the game description and character generation info as well.
I hope to see you soon.
