Act I: Inauspicious Start
May 27, 2016 9:22 pm
After a few more minutes of travel, you spot tall shapes looming from the dense fog, and the muddy ground underfoot gives way to slick, wet cobblestones. A dilapidated wooden sign reads "Welcome to the Village of Barovia." As you grow closer, the shapes resolve into tenements whose windows are boarded, broken, and lightless. Nothing moves nearby, though the fog limits visibility. Faint sounds, as of something groaning, echo hollowly from somewhere deeper in the settlement.

Ujjaya keeps a lookout through the billowing fog.

With the mist still limiting vision, you rely mostly on your other sense as you start making your way into the village of Barovia. The groaning sounds slowly becomes more distinct, as if a multitude of voices were softly moaning... The streets are chocked with mist, limiting vision to only a few dozen feet. The buildings here at the edge of town look abandoned, burned out, or barricaded. Garbage litters the ground, and a carrion stench assaults your nose. Ahead, an overturned hay cart blocks the street. Near it, you spot some movement, as if someone was standing near it.
OOC:
Combat will be starting. Roll initiative. The dark circle is the person/creature you've spotted next to the hay cart. You can set your party up behind the dotted line. To help you see the map better, there is a zoom tool next to the cursor tool (left click zoom in, right click zoom out, must select another tool to deselect the zoom tool). I've also given you a choice of mounts and animal companions for Kuroi. The dark squares on either sides are more building: I reproduced the map from the book, but it seems the book forgot the players would have horses with them and I made the same mistake, so I had to improvise more space...Rolls

Ujjaya reins in his mount and nocks an arrow.
1. Rider and mount share space?
2. Horseback counts as higher ground?
3. I am aware there are penalties to attempting archery while mounted (w/o the related feat), but does that apply even when the mount is stationary?

1. Yes: "A horse (not a pony) is a Large creature and thus takes up a space of 10 feet (2 squares) across. For simplicity, assume that you share your mount's space during combat."
2. Yes, but for melee attacks only: "When you attack a creature small than your mount that is on foot, you get the +1 bonus on melee attacks for being on higher ground."
3. It would seems the answer is no since they only list penalties for movement...

As I possess neither document, I rely only on the SRD but will often ask for your interpretation of various things. :-) Thanks for answering my queries!May 30, 2016 4:30 pm

Behind the dotted line please Spades.
Edit: perhaps you guys should agree on some sort of march order to prevent the whole "I want to be in front", "no me!" thing...

Roland is placed. He is actually standing on his cart but it won't show the character on top of the cart. Only under it.

Kuroi, having no idea if the form in the street is hostile or not will give it a shout, and then send his bird to fly ahead, out of range, and come back if it spots anything dangerous...
His bird will quickly turn around as soon as it reaches the alley to your right and come back signaling danger...
Ujjaya's turn.
