Alternatives for Rolling for Stats

I really like that one. It appears to be a little stable than our original method. Maybe I might use this one next time

Has anyone ever done a "meta" game for rolling stats?

Find some video game/board game/card game and allow players to use skill/strategy in another medium to determine what stats they can get.

When I was a kid, me and my brothers would play the "TMNT: Turtles in Time" video game. I would record scores before a Game Over for each player, and then we would use those scores as a "point buy" system for other games. Maybe I was just a weird 7 year old.
