The many faces of... (multiple character avatars)

Sometimes you want to be able to quickly and temporarily change your character's avatar.

This can be used for:
*Druidic wild shapes
*Posting as a familiar
*A library of facial expressions for your PC

In this example, I'll use a DnD 5e character sheet, but it works for any system where the GM has enabled character sheet integration.

1. Add an npcs tag

Add an NPCs tag to your character sheet (in notes for non-custom sheets). For some systems, this might be available on the menu.
Add a list of your avatars on newlines in the format: avatar name | URL to avatar image

You should be able to see these avatars when you save your sheet.

2. Posting

Under rolls, select your character sheet.

Select your avatar from your list.

The system will add the NPC tag to your post.

If you 'Post As: Player' then that avatar will be used as the main avatar. If you also select your PC in the 'Post As' then the avatar will be used as a thumbnail at the side.

Thanks, Adam!

This is great! The only thing I can't get to work is that my GM characters don't appear as character sheet tabs, only the ones controlled by other players.

@nezzeraj You're right. The GM's sheets aren't added automatically. You have to add them to Advanced Rules Definitions manually.

Why? Because I have campaigns with dozens and dozens of NPC sheets and I want a feature that I'd find a mess. Also, manually adding them to the Advanced Rules Definitions allows the sharing of a sheet across games.

See https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/23143/ for details on adding gm sheets.

Maybe the situation with so many NPCs is not the norm, and all NPCs should be added by default?

GMs with too many NPCs can add a select statement (just like we have) which can turn off all the other ones.

We should try to be the least surprising to the most people. Let the special cases take the extra steps.

Agreed, GM sheets should probably be turned on by default and turn-off-able. I assume that most GMs will want that option on. We've had multiple people assume it was a bug already that they're not shown

this is fantastic Adam - one single character sheet for all the NPCs one needs, and a separate pull down menu for each group of NPCs ! So handy

edit: and the Harvesting NPCs from existing games trick is awesome too! Many thanks

I've got almost everything to work except I don't see my NPC characters under "rolls".

I'm using the Custom Sheet for a DCC game. I have three NPCs and the pictures and character names uploaded successfully on the sheet per the instructions. . . What am I missing?

Are you the GM? You'll need to add it to gmSheets in Advanced Rules Definition.

I've been told in no uncertain terms that this is too fiddly, and your NPC sheets will be included by default in the next release.

Until then, this might help.

I'm not the GM, but I'll pass this along. Thank you!

Ah - then that's a little easier. You just need the GM to enable character sheet integration in the game.

For the Advanced Rules Definitions

That's either:
{
"characterSheetIntegration":true
}

...or if they have dice rules enabled, something like this (depending on their dice rules)...

{
"diceRules":[
{"rolled":"d20","natural":20,"highlight":"success bold underline"},
{"rolled":"d20","natural":1,"highlight":"fail bold underline"}
],
"characterSheetIntegration":true
}
