Off the Beaten Track

Albert nods amicably towards Meht then looks back at Rook and sighs heavily. "Yes, sadly, the bar is no more than a pile of rubble right now. it happened about a fortnight ago. I was out to get a shipment of bread from the docks and when I came back the bar was on fire. It was already partly collapsed by that point."
Those close enough to Albert can see his eyes get teary as he recalls that day.

"I'm not sure exactly who or what did it. If you ask me it was probably those demonic things... Whatever they're called." At this point he looks up at the sky with a pondering look. "Maybe it's just Raynor, finally forcing me to get back to the temple and finish my training. If you're looking for 'a sign' I guess there's no better one than your house literally being on fire!" he ends the sentence with a smirk full of irony.
OOC:
Raynor is the god of conquest. He is known for smiting his enemies with righteous fire. Therefor he is also sometimes called the god of fire. Rook probably already knows Albert used to be an initiate.
"And yes, I came here basically unarmed. Some of these bandits were regulars, they owed me a favor and as I'm down on my luck right now, I was hoping they'd help me out. But all they did was laugh at me. I guess it was foolish of me to think otherwise. I was pretty sure however they had stolen some of my stuff before, so I waited for them to leave and came to get it myself."

"So tell me, what brings you to this camp? Are you making the province a safer place?" After uttering those words, Albert loudly clears his throat and spits some flehm on the ground.

- Albert -

You are pretty sure you have seen the captain at your bar from time to time. While not a regular, you seem to remember that she traveled a lot and you were conveniently situated outside town.

Asha gives you a shy wave from behind Meht you can not be sure, but she might be one of a bunch of kids that used to hang around trying to score drinks off grownups, but that was a while ago.

- All -

The captain eyes Cook and Albert suspiciously. As though she might recognise them.

From one of the tents there is a small, pained and fearful cry, followed by a shuddering moan.
Dec 20, 2021 2:43 pm
At the mention of empty mugs, Cook turns and flicks two fingers in Albert's direction. Nothing happens other than Cook getting a confused look on his face. Used to do...something.

Jondar's moan ends his contemplation. "Got your stuff too," he says, motioning at the tent, " better than mugs."

Seeing the rest of the group he mutters, "not enough rabbit."

"What was that?" Meht asks Cook. He starts moving softly to the tent the noise came from, axe still in hand, intending to peek cautiously in.

"Ah, good day, Captain..." Albert racks his brain but can't find the captain's name. ".. of the guard. Nice to see you again. Say, you wouldn't happen to need some more men on duty, would you? Things haven't been going very well for me and I'm in dire need of some money." I might as well give it a shot... "I can take care of your wounded!" He adds hurriedly when he notices the captain is actually thinking it through.

Hmm, that kid looks familiar. Could it be...? Hmmm.. Perhaps, perhaps.. He smiles warmly at Asha, then remembers that he's holding those mugs and puts them away in his backpack.

"You are quick to turn on your fellows." The captain says suspiciously, clearly thinking you to be a bandit given that you are here in their camp helping with food, and not having heard your whole 'explanation'.

"And who said anything about wounded?" She asks even more suspiciously, wanting to know what you know about the ambush plans. During the fight she overheard mention of such 'dire need' as you, coincidentally, allude to now.

Her attention is more on the sound of wounded from the tent, wondering how they are being 'taken care of'.
OOC:
Obviously Albert (and Cook) will be accepted into the party, and we don't need to see all the details of people being convinced. I am just stalling to see what happens with the moaning from the tent.

Albert explains the situation to the captain as he did to Rook, hoping that will clear everything up. He also adds "By any chance, have you heard any information about the destruction of my bar? Could it have been those things? Did someone get arrested for arson recently? Anything at all."

The captain squints at the mugs and then at your face, she nods as recognition dawns. "Sad business." She agrees. "I saw the ruins, but have not heard anything about it. I assumed it was just an accident... Sorry." She breaks off, not wanting to belittle your grief or dismiss your concerns with talk of mere accidents. "I have been busy in town.

"We might be able to use your skills." She admits, Rook's friendliness probably helping her decision.

She does not appear to know what these 'things' that you talk of are, but then is distracted by Meht's investigation of the tent.

- Meht -

As you peek into the tent you see a man (Jondar, in case any of you know him) sweating and writhing in pain --from what you might recognise as bear claws, and possibly teeth. He does not look well --definitely infected-- there is grey-looking puss oozing from behind his dirty dressings.
Dec 26, 2021 4:21 pm
An open wooden crate filled with straw sits in the corner of the tent. Looking closer, you can see about a dozen indents in the straw - about liquor bottle size - but no actual contents. The fog from the trees hangs a little deeper here in the tent.

"It's time," you hear Cook faintly say. The wounded man gives a soft, gurgling gasp and goes quiet. You look over at his gray scab-encrusted back. Wait - wasn't that a wet pus just a moment ago? You see no movement of breath.

Cook turns and hands a bowl of rabbit stew to Rook. It's a strange gray-ish red with some unappetizing chunks of gristle and sinew floating in it. In the background, a long tendril of fog floats away from the wounded man's tent though no one feels any breeze.

This looks bad.

Meht, shaken, returns to the others. "I.. am not sure what just happened. One second the man was alive, though clearly very sick; the next he was dead. My trapper's instincts tell me there is a threat here. But I see nothing except that fog, and that is not like any threat I understand from the forest."

To Cook he says, suspiciously, "What did you mean when you said it was time?"

"Well maybe if they had helped me out, I could have saved that man..." Albert says bitterly, regretting those words instantly as they echo back into his ears. He adds "My apologies, that was... heartless of me." and sighs audibly, slumping his shoulders. "It's been a rough couple of days."

At this, Albert picks up a small flask of cooking oil near the fire and shuffles over towards Cook. He puts a hand on his shoulder and speaks solemnly.
"Perhaps I can give him some sort of funeral rite? I'm no expert but I've seen it being done before. Raynor will hear my call and guide the man's soul to where it needs to be." At least, I hope he will. Maybe it's been too long. Can I still count on Raynor's blessing?

Without really waiting for an answer from Cook, Albert ducks into the tent. This poor man. He thinks when seeing the body. From the looks of it he had no chance without serious medical help. He puts some of the cooking oil on his thumb and starts to say a prayer while drawing a circle with a triangle in it ((Raynor's symbol)) on the bandit's forehead.
While doing this, he takes the time to examine the wounds more closely. What threat was Meht talking about? Was this more than just a wound from a bear attack?
Dec 27, 2021 8:56 am
Albert touches Jondur's wounds, trying to make an educated guess on the severity of them. He asks Cook "How long ago did this bear attack happen?". Is it normal for wounds to get bad in that time span? Is there more at play here than natural infection?
OOC:
I'm not sure exactly how to describe this. Albert is not a doctor so he wouldn't know what to really look for. The only experience with wounds he has is regular life experience. I want to use my Awareness in a "noticing something is off" kind of way, as apposed to a medical check. To see if what Meht said could be true in this case.
Dec 28, 2021 3:24 pm
Cook turns to Meht. "Time?" The old man seems confused and pauses for a few seconds before realizing he has a bowl of stew in his hand. "Time to eat," he says and passes a bowl of the gruel to Meht.

As Albert heads off to the tent, Cook mutters, "soul's long gone at this point."

At Albert's question, Cook thinks a bit, "three days back? Fog was thick that morning. That's when Pool and Baywater had the fist fight over which direction the temple is in. Yes, yes, three days ago." Cook stares meaningfully off to the east where you can see a small game trail, lost in thought, then coming back with a start. He ladles out another bowl of soup. "It's time," he says offering it to whoever will take it.

You are sure this man appeared alive moments ago, but now it really does look like he has been dead for a while. "soul's long gone at this point" rings true.

Raynor knows a bit about wounds --though more about their immediate infliction than their later treatment. (Maybe if one can not return in time to rejoin the conquest their care falls to other gods? Does anybody really know? Do you?)

This man did not --so far as you know-- fall in battle, so you are not sure how much you can interest Raynor in his 'soul'. Anyway, as a 'god of fire' you are pretty sure that Raynor would expect a funeral pyre, but those always take a lot of time to prepare and all the wood around here is damp... and the others are on a mission, the captain probably would not be happy about taking a day to build a pyre --for a stranger-- one that might not even burn.

Anointing with oil and a blessing might be all you can do.

"Raynor, please hear my prayers and guide this lost soul to the heavenly realms of battle. Though he may not have perished in combat and we have not the means for a pyre, he was a fighter at heart and has received his last rites. Lend me your divine vision to see these wounds, so that I can protect those that would sustain them in the future." Albert is speaking in a low voice with his head bowed over the body. He absently puts the rest of the cooking oil in his pocket.

After all this Albert returns to the group, once again with a saddened expression on his face. "I have done what I can" he tells Cook as he sits down near the fire and coughs loudly a few times.
OOC:
I'm using "..divine vision to see these wounds.." in a figurative sense. Not literally altering his vision.

You feel the attention of Raynor turn to you and your situation. Oh yes! It will be revealed. Seems to be the 'answer'. In due time.

Regarding the attention of Raynor:
‣ How does feel to have it focused on you?
‣ Is there judgement for taking so long to come back to the fold?
‣ Is there more behind the above 'promise'?
OOC:
I found had actually given neutral answers above, as per the 7-9, so this just really adds the complication as per the 6- with a Skill. Raynor plans to provide you with answers, it is your business if you like them.

- Cook -

Asha wrinkles her nose distastefully, but the captain is eating the stew, seemingly unconcerned about the strange color and texture.

"And..." The captain prompts. "Where did they decide the temple was?" Her eye takes in the game trail. She is clearly ready to move once she gets answers.
OOC:
We need to get Cook into the crew, it does not need to be elaborate, but think on it as we wrap up here.
