The Sparring Ring (IC Chat)

Jun 8, 2016 4:04 pm
A large area of the bailey is set up with archery targets and straw dummies for combat practice. There are racks filled with blunt practice weapons, and a roped-off area for sparring. At the moment, Valrakas, the minotaur barbarian, is engaged in with Fēng, the aarakocra monk. The minotaur swings a blunted bastard sword in a wide arc aimed for the aarakocra's ribs but Feng is too quick: with a quick flurry of wings the monk is airborne and raining talon strikes down on Valrakas. The minotaur just manages to raise his shield to block, but with that distraction Feng is able to drop down to the ground and sweep Valrakas' legs out from under him. Roaring and cursing, the minotaur falls in a hairy heap.

Feng relaxes his stance and bows. He knows enough not to help the proud short-tempered minotaur to his feet - err...hooves. Valrakas rises, laughing. "Thass twice in a row, birdman! How 'bout we make it best o' five eh?"

Feng bows once more and replies in his lilting Far-Eastern accent, "I'm afraid I haven't your stamina, my friend. And I have other duties. So sorry."

Valrakas laughs again, and claps the monk on the shoulder. "Fine, fine, off wit' ye then!" he rubs his hands together and looks around, grinning, "So who's next?"
Jun 8, 2016 4:07 pm
Farick enters the ring, "It's been too long since I've had a good sparring match. I'd be happy to test myself against you," he says, bowing respectfully.
Jun 8, 2016 4:33 pm
Valrakas lowers his head as if to return the bow, but then plays the same dirty trick that had worked on Feng: he charges Farick with his horns!

OOC:
Why haven't you been adding your proficiency bonus to your attack rolls?

Adjusted my previous post a bit

Also: I hate barbarian damage resistance, it's killing me!

Heh. Good catch!

Pretty awesome, isn't it? Other than Valrakas I've only actually played two other barbarians. As you know, Mai'ngor is multi-classed and Rufio was kinda ineffective for some reason. So this here is good practice. :-)

With a bellow, Valrakas sweeps with his horns, catching Farick and tossing him across the ring.

Something here is actually unclear to me: When the Rage text says it grants "advantage on Strength checks" does it mean all Strength-based checks, or only straight up non-skill ability (Strength) checks?

The horns catch Farick this time, knocking him across the ring, where he falls and doesn't stand back up

You win!

Personally I categorize Athletics as a Strength check subcategory, since it's "Strength (Athletics)" that grants a proficiency bonus if you have that selected. So yes, in my game it'd have advantage.

Ultimate ruling is up to handle.

Rules As Written, that's the way it works

And it's categorized under Ability Checks on Pg 175 of the PHB

Grappling and shoving/tripping are actually both Strength checks, by the book and are affected by rage

Sorry (bit of a rules whore over here)

EDIT: To clarify, I don't care how you rule it in your game. So long as we're on the same page about the official ruling in the book, you can rule however you like.

But see, that's exactly what I'm talking about: Shove back, aside or prone, Grapples, what else uses an opposed Athletics roll?
