Not a problem, can definitely guide you through it.
When you level up in 5e, there are a few things that happen:
1) You ALWAYS gain more hit points.
2) Depending on how many TOTAL levels your character has (so not specific class levels, but the sum of all class levels), your proficiency modifier may increase.
2) Depending on which
class you're taking a level in, you get extra features depending on the level you're getting.
--> 2a) At certain levels, your class will give access to an Ability Score Improvement. At that time, you can choose to get +2 to one stat base score, +1 to two separate stats' base scores, or your choice of a feat (like Elven Accuracy).
Your
race doesn't change as you level up (outside of some SUPER rare things like if you suddenly turn into a vampire because of in game shenanigans)
In your case, as a level 2 ranger, here's what you'd be looking at for your extra features:
Choice of Fighting Styles (pick one)
Fighting Style | Benefit
|
Archery | +2 to hit with ranged weapons.
|
Defense | +1 to AC if you wear armor
|
Dueling | If you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, +2 to damage with that weapon
|
Two-Weapon Fighting | Ability to add your damage mod to your second weapon attack |
Spellcasting
You learn 2 1st level spells from the Ranger spell list (you also have 2 first level spell slots to use them to cast with)
Wisdom is your spellcasting ability (Save DC = 8 + proficiency + WIS modifier, Attack roll = proficiency + WIS modifier)
