Chapter 1: Making Introductions

Dec 27, 2021 4:01 pm
The sun rose into the hazy spring sky east of Conyberry, twinkling on the dew that had settled on every available surface overnight. Whether by happenstance, Amaunator's cheeky interference, or through careful planning of your own design you all find yourselves arriving in the village on this breezy morning. While not a strict invitation, per se, your conversations with traders (or overheard while undertaking your own somewhat nefarious dealings) led you to believe that the Mercantile Council of Conyberry was hosting a small gathering before midday, to see what aid could be rendered by eager adventurers.

The village itself is obviously in a state of repair and regrowth. You can easily see the stone foundations of old buildings, some charred from fire, scattered through the town. The main road, running west to east through the center of Conyberry, is made primarily of worn cobbles, but with plenty of dirt and gravel patches splotching the surface. Side "streets" meander off the main drag, really more dirt-trodden paths from years of horses, carts, and feet tramping down the otherwise wispy grasses common to the area. A somewhat rickety looking wooden wall has been erected around the town, though no gatehouse or gate seem to be present on either side. All the newly constructed buildings stand out like a sore thumb, with fresh thatch on the top and naked timbers serving as the primary supports. Likewise, you can see the buildings that have been reclaimed or repurposed, clearly patched with new materials.

Your travels into town, regardless of direction, were uneventful. For those arriving from Triboar to the east, you were cautioned about recent attacks on caravans. For those arriving from the High Road to the west, you had heard that there were still several orcish bands in the foothills to the south. Finally, for those coming south out of the Neverwinter Wood, all the classic tales of n'e'r-do-well forest spirits were fresh in your mind.

As the day marches on, heavy steel-grey clouds begin rolling in, sending the temperatures lower as lunchtime draws near.

In terms of background information, you all know the information present in the Conyberry post under the Knowledge Compendium. Whether through conversation with traders, general "ear to the ground" behavior, or what have you, anything in there you are free to use as character knowledge.

Through general stomach reckoning, you all figure you have about 2 hours until you're expected to meet with the Council and can take this time to explore the town as you'd like.

What some would think would be a normal day for a slightly backwater village like Conyberry, would turn out to be no such day at all. Indeed, today a sight rarely seen throughout the Sword Coast would grace it, likely sparking stories for generations to come. For a being so rare only scholars and the furthest traveled knew existed would grace its cobblestone road this day.

Radiza had come to Conyberry.

Whereas a seasoned inhabitant of Waterdeep who was quite used to being met with the new and unknown on a very regular basis would merely raise an eyebrow at seeing a Tabaxi for the first time, Radiza was much more used to gawps, long open-mouthed stares and the occasional object dropped from limp hands. Or a scream and slammed door, but what was one to do? On a more positive note, she usually accumulated a drape of children following her about. The young ones simply saw the cat in her and didn't immediately think of danger. Radiza let them, making her young audience act as a shield against ignorance and fear from the more skeptical or wary among her inevitable audience. She did not begrudge those who didn't take a liking to her. She knew quite well that the world could be a nasty place, with equally vile creatures prowling it. The unknown more often than not turned out to be something bad.

And bad had certainly taken a liking to Conyberry. Radiza took note of the damage to the buildings. But the repairs were a good sign. It meant the place likely had coin to pay her with instead of empty promises. She sauntered towards the town center with a certain confident swagger. She had all her worldly possessions with her. Her scale mail armor had seen much use, with certain areas clearly patched up much like Conyberry's buildings. Over it was a tabard with the an emblem of a crescent moon of silver on a field of black. The emblem was mirrored on the round shield on her back. Likewise, her sword was oddly curved, in a design normally seen to the east around the Sea of Fallen Stars. As for herself, she had painted her mane in war colors but otherwise her feline appearance seemed rather pleasant, until she displayed her canines of course.

But none of that was on her mind right now. Of much greater importance was the current objective of her journey.
"There's the tavern! We got time for a few mugs and sausages I reckon!" She said to her traveling companion. Wandering the roads was part of a merc's life, but any veteran would partake in life's simple pleasures before the fighting broke out.

Milaki arrives to the village and takes a walk around to find any store to steal or any easy victim to pickpocket.

Atticus walks into town with a smile on his face. So do you think the rumors will pan out? Atticus says to his friend and traveling companion. Best case...we get a job...worse case we get a bed and a meal tonight.
Dec 29, 2021 9:52 am
A dark haired human teen, yellow eyes and pale skin, in a dark military-style clothing walks beside him.
Which rumours are you talking about? The ones surrounding the orcs? About the possible bad weather?
He then whistles extending his arm and soon a large, most likely a bit overfed, crow lands on it, the bird looks expectingly at him making a rattle sound. He reaches into his pocket, takes out a small piece of raw chicken feeding it to the bird, which greedily grabs the piece and flies away to a nearby tree.
A job would indeed be good, I desperately need a change of pace. How about we go visit the tavern, its a good place to gather intel....

He heads towards the tavern sneaking a piece from the bag in his pocket into his own mouth.

Atticus smiles as he listens to Alan. Indeed my friend, lead on. Following Alan. Atticus quickly feels the pangs of hunger settling in.

Auras had arrived in conyberry traveling from the east her wavy long blue hair the color of clear blue sky or crystal blue waters. her solid white eyes had her looking everywhere and nowhere it seemed. as she trudged along towards the drunken mountain. she was exhausted and was looking forward to resting a spell before meeting with the town leaders and wondered what kind of stew they had.

as she started heading towards the tavern she noticed the town was in a repair mode and regrowing from the devastation years ago. Auras could hardy wait to be put to use for the village of conyberry and her patron. she started humming a song from her home as she took n the sights and sounds on her way to the tavern.

As you've all meandered into town and started making your way towards the tavern, you notice a few things about it. The building itself was, in a previous life, a massive two story barn set off what became the main road. Whether as a central animal storage area or the primary barn for a once-thriving farm it's hard to say. A large, freshly painted sign hangs out over the main door, featuring a comical depiction of an anthropomorphized mountain with a sloshing mug of ale. Smoke drifts lazily up from an added-on chimney in the back of the building.

The door stands open, letting in a bit of the breeze and you can hear the faint sound of a lute wafting out of the door, though it is clearly a beginner's attempt at a well-known song. You spot one other as you all converge on the doorway from different directions, clearly not residents of Conyberry, judging from your general attire.

A swollen-bellied man staggers out of the door, florid face covered in a sheen of sweat. By - by Chauntea's skirts, you'll be sorry Glim - Glim - Glimmerbeard! he hollers, throwing a fist in the air as he stumbles over a dip in the dirt. He snarls a bit as he sees you before he tries to make his way past you all.
Dec 29, 2021 4:48 pm
The Tabaxi deftly dodged the drunk with a twirl, certainly making no attempt at barring his way. The sight of a man down his cups getting thrown out was hardly an uncommon one for her as mercenaries made taverns their home away from home. Instead she headed on to the door, taking a passing note of the armed men of varying attire approaching whilst guessing they were here for the same reason she was, then headed inside as ale and sausages were foremost on her mind. After all, if more patrons were coming she wanted to snatch the best table. She did just so, sauntering inside, then crashing onto a chair, tipping it back and resting her paws on the table for a well-deserved rest. She stretched and waved over whoever was serving the room.

Following the suit, he steps back letting the man pass.
After which he enters and looks around for something like a notice board that he looks over, finding out about the meeting the council is hosting in a couple of hours. He stays there for a bit longer studying the contents of the board for any extra information or local rumors.

Watching the angry man walk away, Atticus follows Alan into the tavern.I'll be at the bar, getting our drinks. Atticus says as he walks past Alan.

Walking up to the bar, Atticus waves his hand to get the barkeep's attention. Ordering drinks, Atticus sits back and waits.

The smells, sounds, and sights of the tavern's interior aren't unfamiliar to any of you. Unlike most of the examples in "civilized towns", The Drunken Mountain's main hall is pretty un-decorated. A packed dirt floor, no doubt the original from when the building was a barn, is scattered with tables. Immediately to the left as you enter is a long bar that runs about half the length of the room. Opposite the bar is the stone hearth that must be connected to the chimney you noticed earlier, a small fire sending smoke into the air. Next to the hearth, a small stage has been set up, with baled hay for seating. A gnome sits on one of the bales, strumming a lute and singing to the middling crowd. Opposite the entry is a short hall that seems to lead off to other parts of the tavern and a stairway leading upstairs.

Maybe a dozen and a half people, at most, are seated throughout the room. Most look to be residents, simple folk with simple attire. The rest are likely adventurers like yourselves, judging from how they are attired and how they've positioned themselves in the room. The likely adventurers you spot appear to be a pair of dwarves with shock white hair; an elf smoking a slender pipe with a pair of rough and tumble looking humans; and finally a foursome consisting of a half-elf, two humans, and a tiefling that are sitting around a table playing cards.

Alan, you notice that (somewhat unusually for taverns in your experience) this one doesn't seem to have any kind of a notice board or the like.

Radiza, you're able to easily find a good table (by whatever Radiza's definition may be). There are tables aplenty against the wall or in the middle of the room, your choice really. As you wave at a young human boy (maybe 15 years old), he comes running over, almost blind to your appearance at first.

Welcome to The Drunken Mountain! M'name's Bruce, what can I get for - WHOA! he says, rambling through his spiel quickly before he actively takes in the feline appearance. I mean - Uhm - You are a - do you want some cream? he finishes stammering out, clearly not sure how to handle the situation.

Atticus, as your compatriots enter the tavern and kind of scatter to their own purposes, you head up to the bar and sit yourself down on a stool. After a few minutes, a ruddy-haired dwarf saunters over, his cream linen shift dirty with the grime of a long shift. Welcome, welcome! What can I get for ye good sir? We've good ale and wine if you're feeling fancier. Or perhaps a small cask of cider? he asks, light and chipper in tone.

The Tabaxi mercenary stopped rocking her chair and looked up at the lad who had made the mistake of making a cat joke to her face. Her eyes narrowed and turned predatory, like a lion staring down a mouse. A painful silence lingered a few moments before she released her witless prey.

"How about you bring me a flagon of ale and a plate of sausages instead, boy?"
Her voice was distorted from the shape of her mouth and had a feline rumble. Her displeasure was heard very clearly however..

Milaki after her walk around the village. She goes to the tavern. She enters, she looks around and goes next to the halfling that plays cards, she smiles at her and looks at her cards and she says: "Hi! Can I sit and watch? Who is winning ?"

Atticus looks over the dwarf and smiles. I'll take 2 tankards of ale..for me and my friend. I'll also take a plate of food as well.

Looking around the room, Atticus looks to find Alan.walking around looking for the notice board. Raising a tankard to let Alan know the drinks are ready, Atticus continues to watch the room.

After making a circle around the tavern, slightly annoyed at the lack of organised information flow in a form of a notice board or notice wall space he returns to Atticus side.

Sits down beside him, once he offers Allan the ale he politely declines with a thank you, I'll pass, it's a bit early for that knowing that, one, it's still early, two, he looks like a kid, in an unfamiliar place that might rile up some problems...
OOC:
He looks like he's slightly underage...
Then he whispers keep an eye out to Atticus and points to the 3 tables with his eyes. He himself spares a glance at Radiza, finding her new hobby of scaring children slightly funny.
Turns to the dwarf behind the bar Could you please spare some local rumors? Do you know the deal behind the council calling out to adventurers?

The boy is still a bit awestruck by Radiza, though you can see the flush of embarrassment creeping up his neck. Oh - um - yes. That would be better. What - that is which - ah which of the ales would you like? Master Glimmerbeard is proud to offer three imported brews as well as one that we make here locally in Conyberry! The list is up there. he stammers at first, finding his courage as he gets back to talking about what he knows. He points to a large slate board hanging on the wall above the bar with a menu written out in chalk detailing the food and drink options at the establishment.

Atticus, as you order, the dwarf thrusts his thumb up at the sign over the bar. We offer more than just that plain ale you'll find in the likes of Triboar lad! I bring the finest brews I can to make sure we're a desired stop ya see. The Northbrew I highly recommend. My own cousin belongs to that monastery, in fact! If you like it, you can ask him about it, the short-haired one sitting over that way would be him. he says through a grin, pointing to the pair of dwarves you all noticed earlier. He's so caught up in his selling of the brews, that he almost misses the start of your question Alan.

Eh? Rumors? I mean we're a tavern, boy, of course there are rumors a foot. I know the Council has been lookin' for help. Truth be told I may be in some need too before too long. Especially if I get more of you lot coming through. Only have but the three rooms here and two are already taken! Going to have to expand the old barn and make some updates if we keep growing. he says, looking thoughtful. As for the Council's deal, I don't rightly know all the details, I don't sit on the council after all. Too busy here. But my sister is, so whatever they say, they're good for it. They should be around before too long.

Milaki, as you pull a char up between the half elf and the tiefling, the group looks at you with a mix of surprise and something else (not quite disdain or disgust, but also not totally welcoming). The half elf looks at her compatriot's expressions and waves them off in a huff.

What is this now? A fifth come to join the table? We're all friends here, don't let these grumps fool you. We're not playing with any seriousness, tradition in our crew. Any time we play before finding out about work, we don't track winners. Has brought us pretty good coin in the end so far! she says, a softness and magical quality to her voice. You do notice that the tiefling has moved their cards a little tighter into their chest, hiding them from you. In the half elf's hand though, you spot a pair of high value cards, likely giving her a shot at winning the next hand.

M'name's Rava. The dour orange one there is Sanctity. Eddie is the shiny one over there, and this lovely lass is my wife Jennifer. she finishes, waving her hand around the table in turn before turning her attention back to Milaki. And what, Pinkie, is your name?

The boy had clearly learned his place. It was important to let folk know lest they walk over you. Before you knew it they get strange ideas, like being able to haggle on her price for a job. The mercenary turned and squinted at the board. Now, ale probably never had been made with Tabaxi tongues in mind so normally she didn't care overly much since the taste was largely wasted on her, especially after the second pitcher, but she wasn't about to get the runs from some poorly brewed piss just before a job.
"Just the normal sword coast ale. If you got fresh sausages I'll have 'm warm. If not, smoked is fine too."
Dec 31, 2021 4:35 pm
Auras looks at the menu before sniffing the air smelling undead she followed the trail to the young look lad and towers over him still sniffing. "Yep your the source I reckon...." auras then orders a stew and seeing the sign of the lazy bard ale orders that. Thinking it can't be that bad.

"If you require assistance I could help in my down Time from helping solve the major problems of this lovely town." Auras says to the dwarf behind the counter. "You have such a lovely place. I love the rustic feel of it feels like home hunting trolls. Nasty beasts trolls gotta burn em unfortunately. Otherwise they come back madder then a hornet." She smiles.
Dec 31, 2021 7:03 pm
He looks back at Auras It is nice to meet you. while thinking I'ts one of those crazy people again, why can't I live in peace..... Then turns back to the bartender How much is it for the free room? keeping one eye on auras, to see how bad is the drink, hoping that its horrific.

The serving boy smiles at you Radiza, though it doesn't take much experience with faces to tell that he's still a bit uneasy with your overall appearance. A Sword Coast Ale and some sausages! That will be a silver piece please! he says happily. Provided you pay him the coin, he scoots off and returns a few minutes later with a carved bone stein full of ale and a plate with a small pile of steaming hot sausages.

Aye lass, I can certainly get you a Lazy Bard, but the stew won't be ready for several hours yet. Only really have it for dinner. Anything else you'd like to eat? You mentioned hunting trolls? You may like to try a cheese I have in reserve. Trollbane Sharp, the monger calls it. Has a citrusy bite to it and they say we should serve is set aflame. Call it one silver and a pair of coppers for the drink and cheese? the barman says to Auras, grinning a bit before turning his attention to Alan. The room? It'll be a silver a night. Four silver a night if you want to add on a dinner plate each night.

The foursome looks around at one another before looking back over to you Milaki. Aye, we typically don't do betting as friends. You're welcome to sit and play a hand or two, but we won't be putting up or taking coin, at least not before we take on a job. Rava says after the barest of looks at her friends.
Jan 2, 2022 5:47 pm
Radiza fished her coin pouch from under her armor. She kept it on a string around her neck, a trick her comrades had taught her early to prevent someone running off with your pay while you were sleeping. It was still fat enough from her last haul and she had no trouble finding a triangular silver coin to hand to the lad, a leftover from her campaign in Sembia. Then she resumed her slow chair rocking while she waited and took a lazy look around. It was easy enough to pick out the folk who weren't from this backwater. A fair number wore armor or arms that told her they were either here for the job or maybe on the way to Triboar. That was good. She'd hate the idea of having to do the job by herself. She'd rather bugger back to Triboar if that happened.

By now the gawping had mostly stopped too, except for the folk who wandered into the inn and noticed her. She pulled out her string and wove it between her fingers to create patterns to kill the time while she kept up her rhythmic chair rocking. All the while she did her best to ignore the gnome. He wasn't particularly good and it was far to easy in the day for drinking songs. The company could use improvement too but who knew what things would be like after sundown? Probably very rural and boring, but one could hope.

At last blushing boy came back with her food and she could dig in. She put her string away and took a long, contentious gulp of ale to wash away the dirt of the road. Then she skewered a sausage with her thumb claw and index finger and took a bite. Unfortunately for the onlookers who were still fascinated by her, Tabaxi lacked lips to seal their mouth while eating, giving them a very public display of the chewing process as she happily worked away the fatty treats while grease ran down her chin.

Life was good..

Milaki frowns a little bit about the no betting game, but in a second she forgets about it and smiles, as the boy waiter passes, stops him and throws her silver coin to him yelling "Bring a round of ale to all of us here!", then she turns to her new friends and says: "Ok, let's play!"

Turns to Atticus and explains.
There is none. The man talking I was talking to is in charge.

For him it is strange that the knight couldn't tell that the man is most likely the owner of the tavern, maybe he's really hungry? Remembering the last time he pushed himself to his limits he failed most of his assignments and angry pork-chop looking superiors weren't exactly helping with the whole situation. Throughout that period of time he was using all of his remaining strength to keep himself from attacking the fat captain and his colleagues.

What do you think about renting the room, Atticus?
Asks, not mentioning anything more in detail, since the conversation took place by his side.

Auras thinks a moment before saying "throw in some bread and I'll take it." She fish's out a silver and two copper. Before saying "I'll need a room too. But if you guys are willing to split the cost we can share?" Auras suggested to the two comrades with her by the bar. "I'm Auras at your service. And you are?" Indicating for Alan and Atticus to introduce themselves to her.

As you all start to tuck into your various foods and drinks, you hear a violent crack of thunder in the distance and the sound of driving rains start to sound their cadence on the roof of the tavern. The dwarf behind the bar hurries to the double doors that had been standing open and rushes to close them against the encroaching weather. Thankfully, the sounds of the storm have started to drown out the gnomish entertainment by the fire.

Milaki, as you toss your coin to the boy, he manages to catch it and returns with a small gallon cask with a burned image of a man lying his head on a lute as a pillow on the front of it. Here you are! And a mug for you, since the others already have some. he finishes, thumping the container down next to you.

Jennifer smiles at you and with a small shake of her head collects the cards and shuffles them quickly before dealing out a round of cards. The game is Witch of the Woods. Hopefully you know it, if not, it's easy enough to learn she says as she starts dealing out a trio of cards to all five players and a stack of 5 in the middle. Eddie spends a few moments arranging his cards before swapping one with the pile in the center.

Milaki, you are able to choose to swap up to three of your cards with the Mercenary Camp. Let me know which of your three cards you want to swap and which cards (numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) you'd like to take from the camp.

Glancing over at his friend, Atticus nods his head. Given that we don't quite know how long we'll be here...the room would be a safe bet I'll inquire about it and pay if it's still open.

Taking a solid drink from his tankard, Atticus gets the barkeeps attention. My friend here says you have an open room. How much is it a night?
Jan 3, 2022 8:12 pm
The bartender has made his way back behind the bar from where he had been closing it against the storm.

Aye, as I mentioned to your friend there, it's a silver per night. Four silver if you want to have a dinner plate as well each night. But the food would only be for the one of ye, not the pair. I don't care how many bodies you bunk down in there, that's up to you. he says, eyes flicking between Atticus and Auras. I've only the one room at the moment. If you'd rather not the room, you can always pull up a corner of the tavern at the end of the night and sleep traveler-wise against the wall. he finishes, referring to a not uncommon practice in the area of literally just leaning against the wall while seated on the floor to catch a little rest. It's not perfect, but it's a far cry better than no sleep at all.

As thunder announced the coming of bad weather Radiza glanced outside. She hoped it would pass quickly. She had not put up her tent yet and doing it in the middle of bad weather wasn't her favorite past-time. She was no stranger to being exposed to the climate however. In war a roof over one's bedroll was often a luxury. Still, there was most of the day ahead. Plenty of time to plan something else if it came to it..

Milaki slides a face down card towards the pile in the middle of the table, deftly snagging a card from the stack. Play continues on. Rava considers her cards for a moment and then slides one forward as well. Jennifer glances at hers and knocks once on the table.

Fate's hand, anyone got the Witch? she says, looking about at her mates. Given that bluffing about the Witch is useless, given the reveal, everyone around the table shakes their head and starts to lie down their cards.

Eddie turns up a 2 of Shields, a 10 of Shields, and a Prince of Crowns. Four points is all. he says with a grumble.

Sanctity turns up a 8 of Coins, 9 of Coins, and a King of Coins and declares Eight Points! with a broad smile.

After Milaki's reveal, Rava and Jennifer each reveal their hands with a simple statement of points. Rava with a 7 of Swords, 9 of Swords, and 10 of Swords for five points and Jennifer with an 8 of Crowns, Prince of Shields, and a Queen of Swords for 6 points.

You're free to do your reveal however you like here. For future possible games of Witch of the Woods, especially as the dealer, I'd allow a sleight of hand to try doing some nefarious somethings with the cards to see if you could sneak the Witch or something like that. But for the purposes of this first hand as a player, we'll make it an easy wrap up. :)
OOC:
Yeah, when you said you wanted to be dealt in, I went "well shoot, now I need to come up with a game and some rules that work". So thanks for being the very first other person to beta-test Witch of the Woods!
Jan 4, 2022 12:47 am
OOC:
cool, you are creative, but you didn't need to creat a card game, we could just roll a dice if I won or loose
Milaki growls and says " it's not my lucky day" and throws the cards on the table and drinks some beer
Jan 4, 2022 1:06 am
Atticus looks over at Alan and shrugs his shoulders. It's up to you. I'm fine with the room or the floor out here. If you want, I'll pay for the room..for a couple days. There's no telling how long we'll be here.
Jan 4, 2022 12:02 pm
Not liking the sound of thunder and not wanting to risk a cold or worse, due to the holes in the tavern/barn walls and non-existent flooring, that may flood if the storm lasts for a couple of days. Worst case, he looses a couple of silver, best case, he's got a dry lodging and escapes an illness or two, now that he's no longer a quartermaster but a mercenary he should keep track of health. He puts down 3 silver on the table saying.
The room please, for 3 days, pass on the meals, if the storm keeps on I will prolong the stay.

Then he looks at both Atticus and Auras If any of you wish to share you owe me the equivalent part of the total sum.
OOC:
idk if it translates with the same meaning to English, but I wanted to say "if one of you decide to share, that person owes me half, if both-each owes me one third."

The dwarf walks over to a locked chest on the back of the bar and rustles a key out from under his shirt after scooping up the three silvers. Turning the lock, he pulls out a heavy iron key amidst the rattle of coin before tossing the coins inside.

Here y'are lad. Room'll be down the short hall there, on the left as ye go.

Meanwhile, the table of players looks around and shrugs. Eddie scoops up the cards and starts to shuffle. Fair enough. Lowest point hand buys a round of food for the table. he says, tossing cards out to the players.

Sanctity takes a look at her cards and slides 2 forward, scooping a pair from the Mercenary Camp.

Milaki, you see the silvery symbol for the nine of shields on your new card.

As play continues around, Rava swaps a single card and makes a very non-committal shrug. Jennifer also swaps a single card, tucks it into her hand, and nods to Eddie. He, in turn, swaps a single card out before looking across the group. Any witches be lurking in our wood? he asks with a smile.

Rava smiles and lays the witch down on the table. Oh aye, 'tis I, the witch. She reaches out and snags a card from the Mercenary camp. She looks around the table before settling her eyes on Eddie. Alright chainyone. Give up a card. He holds his hand out and she snags the middle one, giving him one of hers in return.

One by one, you all go round the table laying out your hands. By the third four point hand being called, chuckles have started. When it ends with Eddie throwing his cards down with a curse, revealing the 5th four point hand of the round the rest of the table is nearly in tears.

Well Milaki, was it? You wanted a winner and it would seem fate has decided we're all winners. I must say, it's been a long time since I've seen a deadlocked table. Just for that, our little group will buy the food, simply for the good time. Rava says, signaling to the boy and ordering a large plate of food. You catch the glint of a gold coin pass between them.

My wife is laughing at me as I sit and play this hand out on the desk in front of me with a die to choose which cards the NPCs draw and such. I started counting points and laughed out loud when I realized all the different fate moves ended up making it so everyone had 4 points at the end.

He turns to Atticus I'll return shortly, have a pleasant meal.

Swiftly grabbing the key Alan turns around and heads down the hallway to the rented room... I really hope that the room is in better shape then the tavern... it at least should have a proper flooring.

After all during storm is the best time to evaluate the sturdiness of the room... especially when you don't practice the trade.

Alan, you make your way into the rented room, finding the iron lock on the door to be in excellent condition for what is effectively a re-purposed horse stall. Once inside, you notice that Baerum has taken the time and energy to do some good remodeling of the space. New wood floors stretch from wall to wall, a small brazier sits in one corner opposite the door with a small chest of coal next to it, and a single bed is pushed into the other corner opposite the door. Across from the foot of the bed is a small desk with a wooden stool. There is room enough for three or four people, depending on how comfortable they are with one another, to stretch out on the floor in the in-between spaces of the furniture. The walls are also reinforced and have no obvious holes in them, same with the ceiling. It would seem even a poor quality room here is something he's taken care to ensure provides its inhabitant with a restful night.

Sanctity looks you up and down briefly before letting out a pleasant sigh of amused exasperation. I imagine we're here the same reason you are. Town is offering coin to people willing to do things to help them out. By Helm's glistening gauntlet, I am surprised to see so many people turn out in such a backwater though. May not be enough coin to spread around to all these folk. she says, furrowing her brow slightly as she starts running some mental figures.
Jan 6, 2022 6:43 pm
The Tabaxi's ears turned to the conversation at the gambler's table at the mention of the job as she played a little with her next sausage. She wasn't too worried about the pay really. This place was run by some merchants word had it. And if it wasn't enough some folk would just leave. ....Or maybe not make it back to get paid. After all, the rumored trouble was the sort you could find in a Chill band and those types didn't like to take prisoners.

Seemingly lazily she let her eyes wander over the others who looked like they had come for the job, looking for telltale marks of experience; scars, calloused hands, worn armor and well-tended weapons..

The gnome nods his head at you and starts in on a lively jig. He's much more comfortable with this song and the music is pretty well done. He starts to sing, but is so awestruck by your singing and dancing that he shuts his mouth and just adapts the song to your dervish of tavern antics. It passes the next several minutes pleasantly, right up until the doors slam open and a trio of rain-drenched individuals come wandering in, cursing at the storm. Leading the way is a dwarven woman wearing rain-slicked leathers and her strawberry-blonde hair wrapped up in a thick braided bun at the top of her head. She looks about the room and waves to the barkeep before sauntering over to the gnome playing music by the fire. In her wake, a bubbly looking gnome with purple-tinged hair wanders in, though the rain has made her look something like a cat that was just dumped into a bucket of water. It hasn't seemed to dampen the personality in her eyes though. Finally, a sun-weathered man in hunting attire brings up the rear, though his clothes look far less worse-for-wear than the others.

Based on what you know, you assume this is Wilfra Glimmerbeard, Daphisany Wobblerock, and Stephen Macasure: Conyberry's Mercantile Council.

Well met everyone! Gerbo, would ya knock off with that incessant pluckin'. The thunder alone outside is enough to drive me to a headache, more'n any hammer on anvil would do. the dwarf says as she pulls a chair away from a nearby table and drops into it in front of the fire.

Baerum, be a lad and bring me one o' the Snow Stout's would you? she continues on before taking in the assembled audience.

Now if this ain't a sight for sore eyes. Seems a fair number of you have heard of our need for extra hands around town. Appreciate you all makin' your way here and glad it looks like you made it in before the storm. Give us a moment to get the water off our backs and we'll get this rollin', ok?

There's the money. The Tabaxi raised a sausage in greeting, but her paws remained on the table and the chair never stopped rocking. She merrily chewed on and looked over the mercantile trio. An odd gathering for sure, but they probably made enough coin together in this place to make the partnership worth it. And while she was eager to hear what the exact details of the mess the town was in, the downpour outside put her in no hurry to get started..

Daphisany, the gnomish woman, giggles a bit as Milaki bumps into her.

I admit, it is good to see revelry. Reminds me of where I grew up... she says, words trailing off into a memory.

Wilfra takes a deep chug of her beer when Baerum delivers it to her. Wiping her hand across the back of her mouth she sighs heavily. Ok, let's get down to the core iron of the issue, shall we? We've been trying for the last two years or so to really rebuild this place into a worthwhile place for traders to stop as they cut across from Triboar. I think we've done a pretty bang-up job so far, but we're getting to the end of our abilities as it relates to some items. No doubt you've all heard rumors of trade caravans being set upon by highwaymen and orcs marauding out from the hills. The sad truth is, that's still very much a true thing. Beyond that, we've had no shortage of issues with livestock thievery, but no real leads on what's causing it. she says in a bit of a rush. The man in hunting leathers leans forward as she finishes speaking.

Aye, and that's just on the general running of the town. M'daughter and I were headed out toward Neverwinter Wood a tenday ago to check traps and found that someone had poisoned most of the baits that we'd set. We've cleaned that up, so no one gets hurt further, but someone is actively working to keep us from taking game.

Wilfra nods to Stephen. We're a bit at your mercy, all of you have come to help. We've got coin and favors both, depending on what help you're able to provide. I know it isn't the same as a glamourous call from a king to rid the realm of a tyrant lich or something, but we are glad you're here to help. Any questions you have or anything else we can tell you?

Anyone that has spared any moments to look over the other adventuring parties sees the pair of dwarves looking somewhat disinterested, though the longer-haired one seems a bit more pale than he had earlier. The elf and her pair of humans narrowed their eyes at the mention of the trade caravans. Finally, the tiefling in the cardplaying group sat sharply up at the mention of the orcs.

From here, it's a pretty open opportunity for you all to interact with either the Council or with the other adventuring groups to determine if you want to coordinate or just try to stay out of one another's way.
Jan 10, 2022 7:00 pm
Alan thinks to himself
Marauders, orcs and animals would require an ambush.... The traps too, most likely during the night or early hours of the day... Either way the only difference is about the location of the ambush...

Then he lifts his head and looks at the knight do you have any preferences?

One could grab extra goods from orcs and highwaymen... It could mean an unhealthy competition, either way we need more people...

The problem with house animals sounds more like an inside issue, so does the one with traps... Is it possible that they're sticking sticks in each other's business to get rid of competition, after all monopoly carries ultimate authority...

He remembers that even in the army there were many 'shady suppliers' attempting to gain coin with smuggling unallowed goods and selling them to soldiers, starting with strong alcohol and finishing with unregistered weapons. Always at each other's throats, always unsatisfied, always wishing for more.

Well, that's a nice jumble of local issues. Radiza thought while picking apart the separate problems. But what will you be paying? And for what? That's the real question.

"Here's a question."
The Tabaxi's voice was unnatural due to the shape of her mouth and came with a resonating purr.

"What do you want us to do exactly, and what's the pay? A bounty for orc and thief ears? Maybe a wage for guarding caravans...?"
Jan 11, 2022 12:21 pm

The dwarven woman quirks a smile at the tabaxi. Welcome to Conyberry. It has been several years since I've had the pleasure of meeting a tabaxi. There was an apprentice I helped train ages ago. Rare Thunder of the Dry Creek Clan, I believe he called himself. Was a fine hand at dagger-craft. You ask a well-pointed question. Wilfra says, eyes dancing. You notice that several of the townsfolk that had been paying attention to their conversations and cups have now turned to take in the rarity in front of them. It's a common mix of awe, shock, and confusion. There is fleeting looks of distaste, also not uncommon. Wilfra looks around the room briefly.

There are many of you here. Far be it from me to try to assign you all tasks not knowing your strengths. A bounty for confirmed orc kills isn't out of the question. Call it ten gold a set? Fifteen extra if you get one of their finger-wagglers. If you want to guard caravans, we will certainly help you negotiate a wage with the specific caravans that come through, assuming that we will foot some of that bill ourselves.

Stephen coughs lightly. Basically we're looking for help however you think you can best provide it. We certainly can't speak for everyone in town, but there are a few big things that we feel the town can easily compensate you for. For example, Alfonse Kalazorn, a rancher that lives a few miles down the road towards Triboar. He used to provide some unique butter creations to travelers through here. But ever since that damn dragon hit the area, he's been more and more reclusive. It would be a great feather in our cap if you could convince him to work with us instead of at odds with us. he says, drawing nods from a few of the townsfolk.
Jan 13, 2022 11:12 am
That was a self-obsessed crowd if it noticed a Tabaxi only now by Radiza's reckoning. But Radiza was mostly surprised to hear of another Tabaxi having passed through here. She only knew of a handful in her wide travels and Rare Thunder wasn't one of them. He had a clan, meaning he likely was the sort from Maztica. Perhaps an escaped slave from Amn? Radiza herself had no clan. Her parents did once, but since they were severed from it they did not pass membership on to her. She decided she would ask more about Rare Thunder later.

That brought her to the matter at hand. Ten dragons for a thief wasn't all that much. Baldur's Gate famously offered fifty once, but they were on the verge of economic collapse because of the whole crisis back then. And a big city with deeper pockets than this little corner of the middle of nowhere. Still, Radiza would give it a shot. Perhaps she would find some dumb ones and make a big payday out of it. Orcs on the other hand were a bit riskier. They can see in the dark, like herself. That took the fun away. Not to mention they all knew how to fight, while highwaymen were often enough rabble who picked up a weapon and waved it around threateningly without any training. Still... only ten dragons.

The Tabaxi purred, seemingly mulling the offer over. She tried to sound reasonable. "Ten dragons for a thief is a bit weak. Did you know the Flaming Fist over at Baldur's Gate offered fifty a pair? I get if it's a bit much for you but say I manage to find their hideout and take that out, perhaps recover some stolen stuff, that would be worth a bit more, no? As for orcs, well, ya got to do better. They tend to have axes and know how to use 'm."
Jan 13, 2022 12:25 pm
Now sure that the tabaxi is indeed Radiza, Alan smirks, he may be a bit naive, this being the first time in his life where he's without a real backing, ofcourse he could always return to his duties, not now... Nor anytime soon.

On the other side the tabaxi knows her craft and has a couple of good cards up her sleeve, he has been at the both ends of the stick, and knows well that it's better not to go against her, so.. why not leave the talking to someone who's better than you, especially if it makes benefits...

He leans back ready to enjoy the showdown.

Milaki takes a mental note
so they wants us to kill orcs...cut their fingers to prove the kill...
and also to go see what happens to the old Alfonse.
She knows him, she used to go to his ranch. She was stealing some of his butter and putting it on warm bread...

A nod of approval, he says back Let's see, if Radiza still has her iron grip.

He continues to watch the show of discussion between the mercenary and the council, ready to back the tabaxi up if it grows into anything more unpleasant.
Jan 15, 2022 5:03 pm
Wilfra doesn't seem to change her demeanor much, even though you can see Daphisany start to tense up next to her.

It was ten gold per orc you kill. Obviously you're entitled to anything that they may have on them or in their clan camp if you find it. If you'd rather take a contract with Baulder's Gate and their coffers, by all means that is an option for you. We don't have the bank that a city of that scope has, by any stretch. Or are you saying more that you lack the tactical skill to handle some orcs creatively? she says, quirking a smile knowing how well a challenge worked for many of the mercenary types.

The man in armor at the card game coughs and nods his chin a bit in the air. Aye, the kitty is right though. Orcs are a bigger risk and makes me wonder if you aren't just quoting some number that sounds good to yo- he starts to say, before the tiefling slaps him on the back of the head.

Oy Eddie, let her finish. Plus, if these are those damnable Shattered Blade types, I'd do it for the sight of their blood on my blade. she says, before turning her eyes back to Wilfra. Do you happen to know which clan standard they fly?

I don't know, not off hand. However, if you insist on more, we can possibly do fifteen gold per orc, though the extra bounty on their mages won't be going up any further. As for the thieves specifically, we won't be supportin' an open bounty on killing them. Prefer the normal thief types be brought in for proper justice. If you bring them in and we can recover some of what they stole, how about we pay you five percent the value of the recovered lot? Ten percent if you recover the stolen goods.

At the mention of the stolen goods recovery prize, you see the elf and her pair of men look at each other with obvious non-verbal communication happening.
Jan 15, 2022 5:42 pm
Cheapskates, the lot of them.
The Tabaxi wasn't overly impressed with what was on offer. And taking prisoners was a whole lot more bothersome than taking some bumpkins out at night. It meant needing more people to keep watch over them and that meant sharing the bounty a lot further. Easier to take their stash and sell it off and end up with several times the paltry bounty. Not the most reputable thing to do, but it was an unfair world. Truth be told Radiza didn't want to deal with the logistics of it though. That left hunting orcs.

"Sounds like you're awfully soft on those brigands, and that just makes my job harder. Nah.... I think I'll go look into the orcs instead."
She looked around the room.
"Anyone care to join me? We split the coin between whoever comes back alive."
The mercenary way...

Wilfra's brow furrows very slightly at the comment about the brigands, but after a moment it passes and a smile spreads on her face.

If the orcs are your target, any assistance there is greatly appreciated. I'll tell you what, if you can bring in a half dozen of them, I'll make sure you have quarters here in town, private for any of you that help, for the next month in addition to any gold rewards. Including fare here at the tavern. she offers, hoping the extra enticement helps soothe the lack of bounty rewards.

The elf and her duo lean back in their seats. We'll gladly go find some ruffians on the trail, once this rain stops. she says after taking a drag on her pipe, drawing a chuckle and nods of agreement from both the dwarf pair and the card-playing foursome.
OOC:
If you'd like, we can jump to the next morning and can finger-wave the rest of the day in the tavern/town during the storm or you can choose to head out now in the weather and see if you can make progress against the other parties that seem to be hunkering down for the night.
Jan 22, 2022 7:33 pm
The Tabaxi nodded her agreement. It was a good offer and needed anyhow. It was time to get to work, and that started with knowing where to march off to. She beckoned over the ones who indicated they would join her.
"Tell us about the latest orc attacks. Where they hit you. Where you think they're hiding at. Your idea of their numbers. Why you think they have taken an interest. The sort of thing that will let us find them or lure them out into the open.."
OOC:
OOC: As long as there's a storm outside Radiza will want to find out what she can from the townfolk about the orcs primarily, although she'll listen to anything about the other trouble. Once it dries up she will want to set out.

Alan signs, content with the promised reward, he sees Radizas actions and decides to join the briefing, in his years he learned that additional valid information is worthwhile, it can both make ones job easier and save life. Once at the table he nods to Radiza and takes a place next to her, waiting for further information. He believes that the Tabaxi has already recodgnized him.
Jan 22, 2022 10:41 pm
Atticus gets up and follows Alan over to where Radiza is sitting. Once there he listens to the briefing and tries to find any pertinent information that'll help them.
Jan 25, 2022 5:51 pm
Some of the townfolk head over to your table, you can hear the small clamour of voices start to rise up as Stephen raises his hands to quiet the crowd.

From what we've heard so far, they haven't exactly attacked the town directly, always outside on the road. It's not so long a ride between Triboar and the High Road, so within a two day ride either direction. Almost all of the attacks that we've heard about have been from the south, enough so that we're pretty confident they have some kind of camp in the foothills there that they can go back to. None of us are exactly mountaineers and tracking orcs was never my strong suit. We've heard that there are at least three of their spell-priests or whatever you call their wizardy types. For the actual orcs, there've been reports of everything from two working together to an entire army of hundreds of orcs. Don't exactly trust the drunkard that was convinced of the army, but no proper estimate of their counts unfortunately. he says in a bit of a rush.

The small gnomish woman perks up near the end. Why? Why do those oafs do anything? To ruin the good and light in the world clearly. They seem to take material goods, but not non-useful valuables. she says, nose wrinkling as she seems to be running over reports in her head.
Jan 25, 2022 7:11 pm
Radiza looked at the situation like a seasoned campaigner and gave her thoughts matter-of-factly.
"If it were hundreds the scouts over at Triboar would have picked up on it I think. Besides, with numbers like that they could just hit the town directly if they wanted to. And it's a lot of mouths to feed. Since they don't grow fields everything edible would've been picked clean for miles. Nah, it's not going to be hundreds."

Her chair-wiggling continued on as she contemplated her foe, as much for her employers as her future brothers in arms.
"Orcs are a pain, but they're not stupid. Good way to get killed that, thinking they're just dumb brutes. They're up there for some reason. Passing through, making a new home, who knows. I know one thing; once we start picking a few off left and right they're going to be right pissed. Best be ready for that. But last thing we want is a head-on confrontation. They're kind of good at that, so I don't want to play to their strengths. They likely rely on these raids for essential supplies. Picking off their raiders and hunters should be the first step. Make them go hungry a bit. Then they might start making some mistakes."

Milaki follows her company in silence and thoughtful.
Jan 28, 2022 3:05 pm
You see some nods of understanding among several people in the crowd. You notice that the other three adventuring groups all seem to be moving on from the briefing, some kind of a plan already secured in their minds. The foursome at the card table collect their things and head towards the rooms, while the two dwarves go over to the bar and talk with Baerum in hushed tones, too low to make out what they are saying. The elf and her two associates pull packs out from the table and settle sailor's waterproof coats around their shoulders as they make their way for the door.

The Council is very interested in your analysis, however. We certainly appreciate your not wanting to have a head-on confrontation. If there are supplies you need to help, or even extra hands if you're wanting to try building traps and the like, we're more than happy to arrange things.
Jan 29, 2022 3:04 pm

For a second Alan eyes the pinkette and thinks...This one is no mercenary, its obvious that no self-respecting contractor would offer money, only material help and the requested items will have to be returned, or their value might be deducted from the pay, if its something more valuable than a couple hundred feet of rope. Anyhow should keep an eye on her.

Radiza, what kind of ambush you're thinking about? A simple wait in the bush and jump? Or a more elaborate one with a bit more planned out structure and a couple of traps?

Then he turns to the person that was giving them the briefing Could you please tell me a bit more about the biotope of the area that the orcs were spotted and foothills in general?

"Hmm? Not like that really, my band prefers hit and run. Scout them out, look a few isolated ones, pick 'm off and back off, then do it all again and not wait for them to come to you. And as I mentioned they need to get their food somewhere, so there got to be smaller groups out foraging and hunting we can possibly hit. But if you like traps.."
The Tabaxi shrugged knowingly.
It's only a matter of time before they send out a big band of warriors to kill us so I won't say no having something to cover our retreat. Unless you know you can outrun a band of angry orcs for a few leagues."
I know I can, but best not to discourage the new recruits.. Radiza thought.

Then where's your band? An orc raid could always use more people....As far as I can tell your're here on your own. Anyhow, running shouldn't be a problem. He thinks for a moment, remembering a time both of them had to go through a physical check before a mission, he by no means could mimic the tabaxis momentum of 120 ft

Auras has remained silent when the guild came in mumbling to herself seemingly holding a conversation something or someone that isnt there before she speaks up. "id like to join in on the orc hunt tho this storm is very bad might wait till it dies down before we go anywhere. also, i'd like some time to prepare for the hunt as well if you will indulge me?" seeming have come to a decision that isn't her own but these orcs will be taken care of post-haste." she smiled.

Daphisany, the one that offered supplies laughs a bit. You are ever the hopeful one aren't you? If you need supplies, we'll certainly help provide the actual supplies. If you'll be wantin' gold to run off and spend elsewhere, you'd be gone too long to help. she says with a grin.

Stephen, the huntsman, speaks up at Alan's question. You've not spent much time here, forgive me. The foothills to the south are a rocky rolling hills type area. Lots of exposed stone, not a level plot of land in sight typically. There are stands of scrub trees dotting the area, but nothing so thick as to even call a woods. Perhaps a small copse at best. There are some old mineshafts in the hills, from before my grandfather's time. It may be that they've holed up there. M'daughter and I don't spend much time huntin' those hills, so can't tell you much beyond that. he says, with an apologetic shrug.
Jan 31, 2022 9:59 pm
"That's alright."
The Tabaxi listened attentively as her tail slowly flicked. She was thinking about something.
"If you were living there with a few dozen at least, where would you go to get food and water? The hill itself sounds barren."

Milaki frowns, that she did not take the golds and goes back and whispers to her new friends (the group I was playing cards) " So, when are we gonna go and what will you do? can I come with you?''

Stephen scrunches up his face a moment. If I were to be out there, food would definitely be scarce, not a lot of ingestible things for much bigger than a rabbit here and there. Water is fine, there's plenty of creeks and small ponds and we get a fair enough rain - he says, pausing for effect as he waves his hand at the thundering downpour outside to supply a small army with water. he looks up at the ceiling a bit. Though, with the abandoned mineshafts, there may be old mining company storage lockers dotted around with something that would pass as food, if you weren't overly picky.

Milaki, when you turn back to the table where you'd been playing cards, you see that the table is empty, likely not having noticed them leave earlier.

Alan, if you're wanting to acquire climbing gear, you've got a pretty solid idea that Daphisany would carry most of what you'd need. Judging by the surroundings, it's unlikely to be the best quality climbing gear, but certainly passable.
OOC:
@millyk - the card players wandered off a bit earlier here. With Milaki being as bubbly and invested in trying to sneak some extra gold, she likely wouldn't have even noticed :-D.

Sorry for the delay this week, work has been kicking me square in the tail.

As Milaki looks about the room, she notices that the pair of dwarves are deep in hushed conversation with the tavern owner, the elf woman and her human associates have left the building into the nasty rainstorm, the card-playing foursome has retired (presumably to their rented rooms here in the tavern). The Mercantile Council is still here, as are maybe five or six other townsfolk that have been half-listening to the conversations but are more interested in their beers (at least when they are openly staring at Radiza).

Feb 4, 2022 9:56 pm
"Mrrrr...." Radiza purred as she raked her claws through her chin fur.
"It sounds like a place where they can't stay forever. That is good for the region at least."
The Tabaxi looked out the window into the rain as the wind battered the village.
"They won't be foraging out in that. As soon as it lets up I want to go looking for their hunters and scavengers. Unless one of you has another idea?"
She looked over those who had agreed to join her with a strong confidence in her own plan...

Sounds like a plan. Atticus says as he listens to Radiza.
Feb 8, 2022 3:08 pm
Daphisany jumps in front of Stephen. You can come right on down to the general store lad. I've got all the adventurin' supplies you could want! she says, bubbly personality replacing the sour face from the orc discussion rapidly.

The rest of the council nods at Radiza's thoughts on the orc situation.
OOC:
At this point, there isn't much else anyone in the tavern can tell you. Anything in the "Adventuring Gear" portion of the PHB can be acquired at the general store for the listed price in the PHB. Otherwise, you're all able to do whatever you'd like for the remainder of the day/evening and will be able to get up in the morning to a rain-free day (though conditions are predictably muddy outside). Assuming no one has any urgently pressing issues to attend to.....
The morning comes and the rain seems to have abated. The air is cool outside and the ground a mess of muddy tracks. For those rising early in the day, the sun has just started to come above the horizon and the morning song of birds floats through the air.

Where are you headed and do you make any preparations before-hand.

The evening before Alan asked one more question to the council Are storms like these common in these parts? after hearing the answer and listening to the end of the briefing he visited the stores to purchase
Bubbles sent a note to Dramasailor
After returning he found Atticus at the bar and told him that he's spending the night in the room with him, its storming outside and he's not risking his friend to catching a cold. Talks to the barkeep, offering to exchange the 2 nights that he's not staying at the establishment to a gallon of Sword Coast Standard Ale, so that the good trader doesn't lose his income and he gets his worth of spent coin.

Then he departs into the room, finally letting chuckles into the room trough the window. Prepares his sleeping place, the newly purchased hammock and his trusty sleeping bag. After that he goes trough everything he knows about orcs while waiting for Atticus and goes to sleep, locking the rooms door and hanging a his metallic mess kit on the doorknob by rope beforehand.

In the morning he gathers his stuff, washes up, hands over the key to the owner and goes to the butcher store, before departing to hunt orcs

Alan, when you awaken, you find that Atticus has taken very ill, whether from food and drink last night or some other illness. When asked, he tells you he will likely be finding a trader that can take him to either Waterdeep or Neverwinter, where he can avail himself of a proper healer to recover. He insists you stay and continue the mission, but he won't be accompanying you. The council, the night before, informed you that such storms are not uncommon, but this even was a bit strong for this time in the season. You are able to easily arrange to have meat delivered to the tavern at no extra charge. When you ask about the prices of meat, Baerum informs you that he receives shipment every day and would be happy to have a bit extra delivered at his price.

When you've all woken up and make your way into the main hall of the tavern (or woke up there to begin with), it's quite a bit different than the night before. Where the evening held revelry and the excitement of the Council meeting, this morning is less so. Those of you with experience in and around Sword Coast taverns recognize the depressing view of an empty tavern in the morning. Baerum is up and has made sure some breads and fruits are available free of charge for you. The requested warm milk and sugar are set down on a table for you, Milaki. However, any proper hot breakfast would cost a few copper for the bacon.

Milaki, you see the other players gathering getting ready to head out on the orc hunt when you rouse.

The rest of you notice the previously bubbly halfling looking particularly disheveled from sleeping between two chairs all night.
[ +- ] How I see Milaki waking up....
Feb 19, 2022 7:48 pm
It took Radiza some effort to wake, but a seasoned campaigner did not complain and just got about it. At least she had long mastered the trick of catching sleep no matter the time of day in short stretches, so she was up before first light. It wasn't as if she needed it after all and the Waning Moons often used her as the night's watch for her eyes. Rather then try to set up her tent in the storm she had snuck out back and had rested in the stable's hayloft. It was a far more comfortable place for sleep then anything on the road, that much was for sure. As she sat up she shrugged off her blanket and stretched. Then she plucked some hay from her fur. Next to her was her armor which she got into after taking care of the morning's business. She could dream the order every piece had to be put on in and her fingers easily found each belt and clasp. She could do this blindfolded if need be. Finally she took up her weapons and nimbly climbed down to get out before the stableboy would be in. Outside she brushed off the last bits of hay before taking a little walk that had her end up at the inn's front door once more.

As she entered along with the first light of dawn she noticed the resting forms of folk who had used the hard floor as their bed. It wasn't comfortable she knew from experience, still a stretch better then sleeping out in a storm. Her paws padded softly across the room where she entered the kitchen. The smell of bread in the oven met her. She would eat the stuff if there was nothing else, but she was Tabaxi and it agreed poorly with her. Meat was generally on the menu and she asked the cook for another plate of sausages. She left the coinage in the kitchen after which she sat down in the common room, once again resting her paws on the table as she waited for her breakfast. It would be the last hot meal in a while. She had dried meat to last her quite a while but like most rations it lacked a good taste.

As the local rooster finally went about his job the others began to stir, and Radiza watched to take their measure..

I knew it.... he got sick again... at least my debt towards his father has been repaid... Huffing in slight annoyance as he helps Atticus with finding a trader on his way towards the general store in the morning. He remembers Lord Rohmner the man has helped him many times during his service at the army, he always took his side when others began to point fingers at Alans strange diet or not exactly changing looks trough his 7 years of service. Having a noble on his side saved him a lot of trouble, so in turn he agreed to accompany Atticus once the lad decided to make a name for himself - not that he had any plans of his own. Now that the young knight Atticus will be sent home safely he can deem his dept repaid.

He runs his hands trough his dark locks on the way back to the tavern and thinks On one hand i don't owe anyone anything anymore, on the other - I lost the only trustworthy ally in this place.... He eats a whole half pound of fowl on the way back, while feeding small pieces to Chuckles, that is comfortably resting on his head, the bird has refused to leave his side since yesterday, it looks like it truly didn't enjoy the storm.

Soon he enters the tavern, puts most of his purchases into this bag while keeping a small amount in his pocket for a quick snack. Sits down across from Radiza. He looks at his tiger tattoo on his right shoulder, a result of a bet he made with Radiza a long time ago, she used to like to constantly remind him how he passed out just after a couple of bottles of ale and then she was graceful enough to spare his poor soul and pick just a tiger - after all the loser of the bet had to get a tattoo of the winners choosing, in the most shady place possible. He speaks up Were down one person, the knight that was with me got sick and I don't think that the other one got the mettle, she probably has already ran away... Do you think that the two of us will be enough to make it without major casualties?

Chuckles (the pet crow) soon grows bored and begins to wander across the table making a few playful pecks and rattling coos at the tabaxis clothing and paws, the bird clearly has begun to recognise her.

Shifts his gaze at the waking Milaki, he must admit that her new look rather suits her - a troublesome hairdo for a troublesome person.

Milaki eats her breakfast fast, fix her hair and then she comes closer to Alan and Radiza and says: "Good morning! My name is Milaki! I would like to join your company to the orc hunting!" Looks at Alan: ''You look pale...maybe you need to do some sunbathe more often...ohhh nice crow, what its name? they say they are smart animals and they bring shiny things to you as presents!'' and then to Radiza: ''Hello...I have a weird question..Do you cough hairballs?''

The moment that he was about to answer with the usual Don't worry about it he lightly coughs, choking on his own unspoken words as Milaki addresses Radiza. He chooses to remain silent, looking at the two and waiting for the following reactions, curious glint evident in his yellow eyes. Now, this might be interesting...
Feb 21, 2022 4:31 pm
Not for the first time Radiza pondered the edible qualities of the bird. Especially now it started to pick at her. Why someone would keep the pest around was beyond her. Then again, she mostly knew crows for their handiwork on the bodies of the fallen after a battle..

She returned her attention to the conversation. Being down one man where there were so few to begin with was a nuisance for sure. It meant they really had to start looking for isolated orcs to take down and the slightest group would become too much for them to tackle. The Tabaxi was beginning to ponder waiting a little longer to see if more folk trickled in from Triboar and was just about to offer the suggestion when the gnome spoke with the restraint normally reserved for four-year old infants. At least it fit the size. And it wasn't anything Radiza hadn't heard a thousand times before. She traveled with mercenaries after all. 'Do you cough hairballs Radiza?' 'Can you lick your own butt Radiza?' 'Why are you nailing me to a tree with a spear though my gut Radiza?'

Well, two could play at that game..
"This is no job for children ya little pink-haired menace. Go bother your mother and try killing some mice before bothering the adults."
Feb 21, 2022 4:53 pm
Here we go... getting comfortable in his chair Alan picks up the bird and cradles it in his arms, not willing to risk an emotional outburst followed by claws and cuts. He listens in, hoping that the little argument would last, after all they need more people and at this point it takes time, so why not enjoy a show if it's literally given to you.

At this point the bird stirrs from his arms and climbs onto the lads head using his body as stepping stone - hopping from his arms onto his shoulders and head..

As you talk, Baerum brings out any requested food, happy to be doing such a brisk trade in the morning. As you all talk, the pair of dwarves from the night before eventually make their way downstairs, hauling a significant amount of luggage with them.

Alan, the trader you sent Atticus with lets you know that the trail into town is very badly damaged. They pushed through the night but almost lost two wheels on their cart during the travel from the washed out road in certain areas. Rather than continue on through to Triboar, they actually opted to take a short sell of their goods to Daphisany rather than risk the trail onward.

Alan nods understandingly, he mentions that safety should be their priority and that Lord Rohmner will thank them handsomely if Atticus gets back safe.

Radiza let out a long, exasperated sigh. She really want to take along the pink eyesore but what choice did she have? Go with just Alan?
"Gods above and below and in-between help us! Fine! But you don't get a copper unless you bag at least one of the green bastards!"
Feb 22, 2022 9:11 pm
Well backstabbing doesn't limit itself to orcs, either she's naive or she's going to stab us in our sleep... Alans eyes widen when she mentions stabbing, but he becomes slightly paler when Radiza actually agrees with her proposal. He looks at her wide eyed If you're sure, then alright, but we probably should wait for more people... No way I'm sleeping in the reach of pinky, her whole image screams 'Undertable'

He then turns to Milaki and points at the bird on his head This is Chuckles, he's a friend, not food... he looks her dead in the eyes, the thought behind it 'you hurt the bird and I'll skin you alive'.

The whole intimidating sharade gets ruined, when Alan dips his head and the bird looses his balance on his head almost tumbling down to the ground followed by the lad himself attempting to catch the critter as he falls off of the chair. In the end Alan is face-down on the ground the bird jumps around displeased by Alans performance.

The tabaxi wasn't impressed with the sappy attempt at niceties.
"Well isn't that cute, the boy meets his first girl. If yer done playing nice, let's go over the plan with the short one, eh?"

Whilst still tipping back her chair the large feline warrior looked over Milaki.
"It's simple really. Three of us aren't going to tackle the main force those orcs have up there on that hill. But the hill turns out to be desolate. Even if they find some ancient rations in the old tunnels up there it won't last them long. So they got to hunt and forage. Same for water. And they're up to something too, so I want to find isolated orcs, maybe small groups, and take 'm out hard and fast. I'm even happier if they hit the ground without knowing someone stabbed them. Either way we got to stay ahead of their armed groups. So I hope that little boast about being fast goes for running from a horde of orcs too. Especially if they manage to raise the alarm. If that happens we make a break for it and try again in a few days."
Feb 23, 2022 8:41 pm
Listening in, Alan rests his head on his chin and looks at Radiza Well something got you angry bright and early, alright, i will humor you.Don't worry love, simple pleasentries, nothing more, if you go on like this people might misunderstand. the joking tone is clear in his voice.

The plan is alright, simple and obvious, but impossible to predict, by orcs at least. About running, i am not able to outrun you on short distances, but I'm pretty confident that i would be able to shake a couple of orcs from my back.

As Milaki makes the acquaintance, properly, of Radiza and Alan the door to the tavern swings open and the imposing figure of Wilfra Glimmerbeard strides through the door with a trio of mismatched figures in tow.

And this is the Drunken Mountain Tavern, run by my brother Baerum. 'Tis where we had hoped to discuss the details of our needs with you yesterday. Shame the storm held you all up. she says, a chipper tone to her voice.

Oh good! Some of the adventuring types are still here. Well met again the lot of you. These three were on their way here for the meeting yesterday but couldn't finish the travel when that storm whipped up. With that noble boy taking off last night and the quiet one that had seemed to be with you not being here this morning, wonderin' if you'd all want some extra hands for dealing with those orcs, given how you spoke of them last night.

Feb 26, 2022 12:31 pm
The newcomer trio was in for a surprise, for at the table there was a most strange individual. Armored in well worn and often-mended scale mail and a tabard depicting an emblem of a crescent moon of silver on a field of black, what stood out was that this being had the head of a cat which was adorned with a wild mohawk mane painted in war colors. Other feline traits were visible as well, for the armored cat-person had her paws on the table as she gently rocked her chair back and forth. There was a long and dexterous tail too.

"Got a good look?" She spoke, her voice feminine, predatory and gruff but somewhat distorted due to the shape of her maw, like a lioness who decided to take up conversation.
"If you're done gawping, we can use some fighters to do some killing."

That much was true. Radiza wanted warriors who could hold their own in battle, not pink-haired halflings who thought they could take up the job of killing for coin on a whim.
OOC:
Tabaxi are exceptionally rare, from a different continent even. Unless you've been to Athkatla or Neverwinter you will likely not even heard of one, let alone seen one.

Hail and well met! I'm Barek Shieldshiver. I hear there are orcs about, and would gladly lend my hammer to driving them off. Barek is a solidly built male dwarf standing 4'1" and weighing in at 150 lbs. His red hair is thin and balding, and he has a long red beard braided into plaits. His eyes are the brown of rich soil, and seem to take you all in with just a glance. He's clad in well kept chain mail, and a medallion bearing two crossed battleaxes rests on his chest.
OOC:
Tabaxi may be rare, but Barek has been to Neverwinter and is well traveled as many dwarves of his age are. He isn't taken aback by Radiza's appearance.

Where do they keep finding these people? Radiza wondered. She just wanted to earn some coin. Is this really what people like Glimmerbeard had to work with when they couldn't afford mercenaries? At least the dwarf looked solid, but the old man?
"I don't need advice on how to kill orcs old man, and my deeds are probably a bit too nasty for a audience that knows how to read. But it's good you don't need to be paid, because if you aren't killing orcs you're not getting a copper, as I explained to the little pink one over there. And lastly, odds are the job involves running from a big band of angry orcs. So unless you want to study their weapons up close and personal as they bash your brains out, you might want to sit this one out old-timer. Not that I care what you do with yer life, but this isn't a trip to the library we're planning."
Feb 26, 2022 2:13 pm
Across the table from the feline lady sits a mostly casually looking human teen, roughly 16, 5ft tall, except for the pale tone of his skin that may indicate a kind of a blood decease to the more educated folk. He has black hair and yellow eyes, His clothes slightly reminds that of a military uniform (infantry) sturdy well worn boots, simple pants with deep pockets, one of which has a neck of a wax-cloth poking out, a dark armless sweater, with a chainmail on top, a tiger tattoo on his left arm, slightly obscured by gloves and armguards, a leather fanny pack around his waist. Next to him is a backpack with a leather cloak thrown over it, there's a greatsword, longbow and a maul at the bags side.

On the table there's a pretty big, slightly overfed crow, it sits on the table and turns towards the newcomers as they approach. The lad notices the ones approaching soon after the crow, that previously was playing with his fingers- playful pecks, coos and slight jumping around the table.

As soon as he visually recognises the three his eyes turn slightly dark, he huffs. After Bareks introduction he nods, introducing himself Alan Mortem, I will be glad to fight by your side.

He acknowledges Claudius with a nod, but as soon as Claudius mentions academic purposes Alan gets slightly tense, even paler, a cold shiver runs down his spine, but he soon relaxes realising that the man is more interested in stars then the traditional "conquest to outsmart death".

Radiza is as harsh as ever, but she does have a point, they should know what they will be dealing with...then again the old man said that he can heal and a medic is worth platinum on the battlefield... worse case we just gain some canon-fodder

Point taken. From this point on you could just ignore my existence I ignore yours. Just don’t take me for an Orc please , Claudius answer Radiza, turning his back not waiting for answer and
talks to Wilfra Glimmerbeard, starting with a whisper Arrogant complacency may kill party, but could save hero. then aloud
Tabaxi do have a point ! If the major strategy is to run…
Do you have any spare hunting traps, preferably of a high durability? I assume they can't kill orc but would slow them down. Is it a fair assessment?
Unlike Tabaxi I do indeed have NO intent to compete with orcs at running.

Then he turns to Dwarf and asks aloud for everyone to hear Barek, is it practically backed that dwarfs could manage poisons? Remember Wilfra mentioned poisoned baits. There should be a poisoning expert in the town. I've red poisoning enemy just before fight is a method that highly reduce casualties among attacking party. he looks around realising that he is talking about possible death of those gathered and add well, that may not properly apply to a smaller operation like this one. It was the strategy of bigger armies. Would be an interesting experiment though
Feb 26, 2022 8:32 pm
While listening to the old man Alan huffs
Yes, they did mention something about ruined meats, but then again it could cause us unwanted trouble from the wild animals. Anyhow, the poisoning is another problem that people have been asked to deal with, so no self respecting poisoner will be selling poison right now, so that they don't divert suspicion to themselves... That means that the plan is most likely off the table. ....Though if we decide to invest in planning and move out shortly, considering that at least one of you has a shovel, we could attempt to install some simple pitfall traps on the spot.

Pets the bird looking at the old man then at the others.
Now good sirs, how about you sit down. The table is big enough for all of us and the atmosphere if far more comfortable when everyone is sitting.

He then turns to the third one.
You're the last one left, care to introduce yourself?

Barek sets down a heavy well made warhammer and pulls a chair up. I'm not an expert on poisons, but I think the lad's right. That's not a good route to go down. The best way to deal with a rampaging orc is to plant your feet and bash his head in. He looks to Baerum. Draw us a pint of something that'll sit well with my morning bread would you?
Feb 27, 2022 6:19 pm
Esal enters the room looking for the group of adventurers he has agreed to join. He couldn't miss the rather diverse group sitting round a table. He strides over to them. Esal is a medium height elf and is slim. He is wearing leathers has a lonsword at his belt and a longbow strapped to his back. He is middle aged that means about 300 years old!
Hi sorry I was held up my name is Esal Shulas I am the ranger I think you were expecting. Is it Orc hunting we are still intent on?
Feb 27, 2022 7:46 pm
He turns to Esal and nods Now, i feel like we should move out, if we want to get the job done. The longer we stay the less we will probably get paid for our job. I'll be waiting for you at the border of the village, if you want you can come with me, if you don't arrive within an hour I'm leaving without you. The tactics can be discussed on the way.

He grabs his cloak in one hand and throws his backpack onto the other shoulder. Walks towards the exit and opens the door, whistles, as if on cue the black bird takes flight and dissapears outside the tavern doors, leaving naught but a black feather behind. Alan gives his companions a glance, waiting for those who depart with him and leaves heading straight to the village border.

Barek shrugs. Guess I won't be having that pint after all. He shoulders his warhammer and follows Alan to the door.
Feb 27, 2022 9:23 pm
Radiza had barely greeted the elf, taking note of his bow, before Alan was blitzing out of the door. She looked at the dwarf with a shrug.
"Eh. Don't begrudge the boy's eagerness. That's youth for ya. We'll drink when the job's done and we got our golden dragons in hand, and lot's of it."

With feline graze Radiza twirled out of her chair and picked up her swordbelt, which she buckled around her with practiced hands. Her backpack followed and finally she picked up her shield which had the same emblem of the silver crescent moon on black emblazoned upon it as her tabard and swung it on her back.
"Alright, let's get to it then."

With the others she marched out the door, onwards to the place where there orcs might go. She quickly briefed the latecoming elf on their plan so he was similarly aware of her ideas to ambush isolated orcs rather then confront them all head-on and to retreat if the orcs got wind of them.
Feb 28, 2022 8:11 am
Esal leaves with Radiza taking in the new strategy determined to be as helpful as he can to make up for holding up the team.

Thanks Radiza just tell me what you want of me for now i will add my thoughts later
Feb 28, 2022 8:19 am
Radiza's ear turned to the elf as she walked and made an effort to keep pace.
"Eh? We're looking for small groups of orcs out foraging and hunting and such. Just be ready to nail some with that bow of yours. We cut their ears and run, then do it again until they come in numbers we can't manage."
Feb 28, 2022 10:46 am

Your group chats as they make their way out of town, heading south to the foothills based on the information you received from the townsfolk. While the going is muddy, the weather is substantially better now than it was yesterday. The air is crisp, but comfortable for most. Lazy wisps of cloud stretch across the sky, giving pockets of white against the rich blue. After a few hours, you see the crumbling walls of a ruined structure rise up on the horizon. As you start to get closer to the structure, you can see an ancient stone temple with a belfry jutting from its roof, surrounded by a stone wall with many collapsed sections. Only a single tower of the original four remains standing, in the northeast corner of the ruin. From where you stand, you don't see anything alive in the ruin.
OOC:
You've all had a few hours on the walk to discuss your specific plans for dealing with any encounters. From here, you can either inspect the ruin or bypass it and start searching the hills for clues as to the location of the orcs.
Feb 28, 2022 9:16 pm
When Claudius joined back the group his backpack was visibly heavier and you hear steel banging as he moves ... looks like old fool managed to get some hunting traps and is having hard time carrying them. He is out of breath and do not involve into any conversation. Besides he have been dismissed once already and he don't want to be annoyance (well he is anyway, but he don't see it that way).
Feb 28, 2022 9:31 pm
The orcs we’re looking for might be holed up in those ruins. We should make sure they’re clear before moving on lest we leave an enemy at our backs.
Mar 1, 2022 9:54 am
The Tabaxi appraised the ruins. She wondered what they were. The townsfolk never mentioned them and seeing how old they were they likely predated the village. And while she doubted they'd find orcs, Tabaxi curiosity was a mighty force indeed.
"Mhh, the orcs were seen at the hill. Doubt they'd use this place. But let's check it out. Might be a good place to make camp if we're mucking about out here a few days."

She looked around for the halfling. Spotting Milaki she addressed the little one.
"Ey, you grew up around here. What are those ruins?"
Mar 1, 2022 2:53 pm
OOC:
Can I make a religion check to tell what god(s) the temple was devoted to?
Mar 1, 2022 2:57 pm
Milaki, you hear a Telepathic voice of Caudius in your head "This was a shrine to Savras once"
OOC:
I know it doesn't help you anyhow, but I just though it would be silly enough for Claudius to believe he is sharing something important with you. And no you can't answer the message, it is one-way only.
Mar 1, 2022 3:03 pm
''Who said that?!''...looks around... ''This was a shrine to Savras'' Milaki says to the rest of them and confused of whom was talking into her head.

Raises his eyes and looks at the surrounding ruins.I haven't heard about orcs enjoying fine or spiritual arts, not to mention archeology. I think that if they were based so close to the village, they would raid it directly. he pays more attention to the ruins themselves looking for a good spot to use as a vantage point to look at the surroundings. If he notices such, he drops down his bag and stretches.
Do you really wish to spend the night here? I say we take a quick look, if you're interested and then move on, if i remember correctly our goal is in 2 days path... he continues to warm up his joints. I should look around, should I take the chainmail off before climbing or not?

"The hill they're holed up at is, aye. But let's not bet on the orcs staying put. This can be a nice little fallback place." Radiza replied with her quickly made excuse.
"Just a quick look.. Which one was Savras again?"
Mar 2, 2022 8:09 am
Milaki hear same voice again. Sorry, it's me - Claudius. I'm afraid the brutes in our company will not listen to MY knowledge. Probably you would.
Don't know if you know Savras - this god is well forgotten in the region and his ruined temple is very good proof to that. But I don't think Radiza or other weapon swingers would value knowledge of wizard god.
OOC:
So does any PC goes to check ruins? Claudius would be more than happy to rest a few minutes while you search ruins. Old man is used to walk, but his backpack is too heavy for his comfort

Esal thinks it is about time he showed the group he could be useful.

Barek turns back to the old man. Actually Claudius, I'm familiar with Savras. He was a servant of Mystra. He looks to Radiza. I think we should all go check the ruins. If there's something lurking there it wouldn't be wise to split our forces.

She took the lead, walking a little faster then most find comfortable.
Mar 2, 2022 12:58 pm
Barek falls in behind Radiza, hurrying to keep up.
Mar 2, 2022 1:22 pm
Radiza sets off towards the ruins, the gentle slope of the foothills starting to become evident as you get closer to the ruined gatehouse. While not challenging, it's clear you are getting closer to the foothills proper, though still a few hours off from where the climbs might become challenging for the others. The ruin is relatively quiet, though the smell is quite a different story. When you get near to the wall, a stomach-turning smell of rot starts to waft across the air.

The former gatehouse in the wall used to be a sturdy thing, with thick wooden doors. However, they've been shattered inward, the iron hinges still warped. It looks like someone, at some point, tried patching the door with a hodgepodge of other planks, but they weren't well-crafted.

Alan, you don't really notice anything from atop the crumbling walls, just a quiet courtyard with the seemingly abandoned temple building in the middle. As you all move into the courtyard, you don't notice much of anything out of the ordinary, but the smell gets stronger near the door into the temple. You do notice that the earth has started to grow up the sides of the temple, with vines and brushy undergrowth right up next to the stone walls of the building. Pale pink and white flower dot the foliage.

@Stampman49 You can always add a roll if you feel it makes sense. If I don't want it, I just won't use it. :) Sometimes I will roll hidden checks if I want to proactively pass information to you. In this case, I'll just describe the scene for all of you as you walk in the room.
Radiza and Barek work together to force the doors of the temple open, sending them flying off their rotting hinges. Inside, a destitute scene presents itself. Rows of crumbling pillars soar 40 feet into the air, supporting a vaulted ceiling. Humanoid and animal remains litter the dusty floor. The remains are in various states of decay, giving the room a strong odor. Above, a ten foot square hole in the middle appears to house a bell in a belfry. From here, the untarnished copper bell hangs mute, with no pullcord to sound it any longer. Doors to the east and west appear to be intact and closed. The double doors to the south are well-made and carved out of stone. They are closed and from a distance appear to be in excellent condition.

All along the eastern and western walls, more of the flowering vines have crept up the walls, clinging to the aged stone. Though deteriorating, none of the walls in this room appear to be open to the outside world, save for the encroaching plant-life.

Esal, you don't see any movement in the inside of the room.
OOC:
@millyk,@GreyWord - Are you still both outside the gatehouse or have you come into the courtyard at this point? The other four, I assume you are all together near the door to the temple, with Barek and Radiza being just inside with Alan and Esal behind them on the path between the gatehouse and temple proper.
[ +- ] Inside the temple
Mar 3, 2022 1:42 pm
With great care Radiza stepped inside the room, dividing her attention between what is ahead and the remains on the ground. That some could be smelled meant they were not as old as these ruins. The presence of humanoid remains was concerning. She had seen a great many bodies on the battlefield so the confrontation with mortality was mild to her, but not knowing what had brought these bodies here was a source of anxiety. The way they were littered about suggested some sort of beast. But what hunted both men and animal around here?

"Slowly now."

Carefully she moved forward, scanning the walls, even the ceiling. She stopped next to a fresher humanoid body and flipped it with her sword to look at it better so she might see if some sort of beast had done this and whether these were civilized folk that fell victim, or the orcs they were hunting..

I would like to delegate our location decision @millyk a her PC probably helped my PC to regain movement peace.

Radiza, you come close to a body that appears to be no more than a ten-day old. While the remains aren't pleasant to look at, you can spot some bruising where it appears they were choked by something wrapped around their throat.

Because of that: Milaki, Radiza, Barek, Esal, Claudius had no actions to take and no cause to have reactions yet. The enemies used their ability on their turn to cause plant growth to entangle. Alan, because of your initiative score being so low, you act after the enemy batch and can take your full action on the first round of combat (which is why your bit will happen "first" in the narrative of the story).

Radiza was making a close study of the victim's neck when pandemonium broke loose. Suddenly understanding something of what happened she shouted out a warning.
"Watch out, they will try to strangle you!"
Right then ropy vines burst around herself and she leaped aside to avoid their grasping limbs as only a cat could, flying through the air, twisting, pushing off against a wall and immediately charging at the source of the attack; the strange plant-beings. As she did so she felt her bond to the Claw of the Cat Lord awaken. Her foe, nay, her prey, was marked for the kill. She lunged in for a lethal strike with her sword as she growled like a lioness.

Alan struggles against the vines, but his delicate motions with his blade aren't enough to make any reasonable progress on getting free. Claudius's stone leaves his hand and slams into the creature's chest, causing it to stumble momentarily where it stands. Without so much as a moment to see the outcome, he ducks out of sight beyond the doorway. Radiza, seeing the clear opening finishes her acrobatic flourish with an effective strike to the vine creature, slicing several vines clean through in the process. Seeing her own opportunity in the fray, Milaki looses an arrow that plunges into the creature, causing it to give out a rasping wheeze of breath as it looks to be in very bad shape.

Across the room, Barek and Esal close on one of the other creatures, but their efforts to hit the mass of plants fall short as it bends and winds itself out of the way.

The creature nearest to Barek and Esal lashes out at the dwarf barely missing him!

The creature in the south of the room walks easily through the plant growth until it is just out of Barek's reach and lashes out with its vines as well, though it has a worse time of it, slamming its vines harmlessly into the floor.

The creature near Alan and Radiza puts its arms up and says in a sound reminiscent of dried sticks rubbing together. Hold, you are far too mighty for me, I submit!

It spoke! That was unexpected. For a moment Radiza hesitated. Would you slay these monsters, or hear them out? Curiosity struggled against a hunter's instinct. But in a moment she decided.

Alan continues to struggle helplessly against the vines, finding their grasping tendrils more resilient than he expected. You easily hear Claudius ask the question about why the fighting is occurring and Radiza commands it to call off the attack. The one near Radiza and Alan bows its head, clearly not willing to continue the fight, however the other two don't seem to pay any heed. Milaki stands ready with an arrow nocked but unloosed as the creature calls out that it yields. On the other side of the room Barek's warhammer makes a satisfying, if dull, thud as it slams into the twisted plant matter. Esal is not as lucky, his blade going wide as the monster twists out of the way.

The creature that Barek hits tries desparately to attack the dwarf, but is so put aside that its attack just cannot find purchase. However, as Barek avoids the first, he moves directly into the path of the second creature's grasp, feeling it grip him and squeezing strongly.

With Alan finally free Radiza took a glance to the other side of the ruins, just in time to see Barek getting hit nastily. It seemed the creatures were not capable of understanding a hostage situation or maybe didn't even care about their own kind. The tabaxi felt the need to help the others, but didn't want to open her back to this creature. Would she finish it off before she went? No... it might know something useful. She would take the chance.

Alan summons a burst of energy and rips himself free of the vines, stepping forward to close the distance between him. Meanwhile, the rest of the group seems to turn their attention to Barek and his plight as the dwarf summons a shimmering barrier around him. Claudius connects solidly with a magically imbued stone while Radiza takes the risk in leaving the side of the creature she'd been attacking. Unfortunately, the distraction of thoughts about the wisdom of leaving an enemy to her back telegraphs in her strike, causing the blade to miss its mark. Esal takes another swing but continues his struggles in fighting the elusive viney menace! Milaki, seeing Radiza leaping into action at another target, launches her own arrow at the creature, barely finding purchase in the shoulder of the creature.

The creature Radiza had left alone looks warily at Alan, but chooses to just remain still, hands raised defensively. It doens't seem to make any efforts to do anything about the other two creatures.

The creature nearest to Esal makes a laughing sound that reminds you of dried leaves blowing along cobblestones as Esal tries to attack it. You are weak. I will deal with you later, after this dwarf becomes food for Balthara. It says in the same voice as the other vine creature before turning to lash out at Barek, missing terribly. The other creature, enraged that Barek had escaped his grasp tries to lash out again, but it too seems unable to hit the evasive cleric.

Alan quickly wraps a rope around the arms of the vine creature, who seems to sit reasonably still during the process, just dropping its head low at Alan's statement, saying nothing further.

Across the room, the group zeroes in on the remaining viney enemies, with Radiza starting the assault on the creature she faces alone, jamming her blade deep into its back, causing it to stick clear out through its chest. Radiza, you have a strong feeling that the only reason this didn't kill it outright is that it must possess a non-human anatomy. Meanwhile, Claudius hits the creature nearest to Esal with another stone, causing it to stagger slightly. Thankfully for Esal, slightly is all he needed to take out his frustrations at missing before by taking a swift slash at the creature's neck, sending its head rolling across the floor! Milaki looses an arrow at the creature that Radiza skewered, but barely misses!

The creature tries to swing an elbow into Radiza's head, but the tabixi is able to easily bend out of the way. It looks really bad, however, with a thick green sap-like fluid oozing out of the vines that make up its torso.

Claudius chucks another stone at the vine creatures, sending it sailing wide. However, the dolorous ringing of a spectral bell coupled with the violent swordplay of both Radiza and Esal ends the life of the last standing creature. Coldly, Milaki sends an arrow through the eye of the bound creature, causing it to stiffen momentarily before slumping lifelessly to the ground. Less than a minute later, the entangling vines across the ground rapidly wither and crumble away into a fine dust.

"You got a problem with us getting some answers there shortstuff? Alright, you tell us who those people are." She indicated the rotting bodies laying about with her blade.

After seeing this Alan becomes furious, how dare she kill a willing prisoner, has she any sense in her or do local bandits lack any in the first place?

He walks over Milaki, grabbing his belongings on the way, speaking loudly enough for everyone to hear. Listen, what you did right now is beyond stupid, you killed a creature that had no ill intent, gave up and allowed itself to be tied up, i guess that you are used to act like a rabid dogs and kill everyone and everything in sight wherever you're from. Either you get your game together or get out.
A weed needs to be plucked when it's small and doesn't cause many problems or as soon as it's noticed. The many years during his service has taught him that well. After all if this is left to grow both he and Radiza could most definitely wait for a stab in the back during the recent nights.

"Oh yes, one little execution of a prisoner we can forgive, right?"
Radiza's sharp tone suggested anything but the sort. The way she stood suggested she was ready to continue fighting then and there. It was a stark reminder that the Tabaxi was a veteran of war and likely didn't take kindly to some of its basic rules being broken. Radiza was clearly not in a good mood. The brain-addled old fool was getting on her nerves, but the pink-haired little bitch was another matter altogether.
"That plant-thing talked and it gave up. I have no idea if it would be kept alive or not after questioning, but I spared it so we can get some bloody answers. Like who these dead folk here are. How many more of its little viny friends are waiting for us out there.." She pointed her sword in the direction they were traveling. "..And what in the bloody blazes these things were doing here. But now I ain't getting these answers. Because this little arse dropping here decided to pincushion it right in the middle of Alan tying it up."

Radiza looked down at Milaki with distaste.
"I had my doubts having you join. Turns out they were right. You're done. Go home."
She glanced at certain others of the group.
"Anyone got a problem with that can go back with her."

Getting tired of the ackward silence caused by the overflow of emotion Alan sheathes his blade and walks over to the 3rd creatures corpse. To be honest, even in army a single major messup is allowed... he inspects the corpse and, if the creature is made out of plants, he would like to cut a small piece off with his dagger and taste it, maybe he can fool his diet with plant monster meat as an alternative to a salad. Radiza snarls. Perhaps in the army, but in the Waning Moons, it will get you left on the field. I knew it was a mistake trying to deal with this kind of a menace with people so reckless. the tabaxi says, wiping off her blade on a pile of leaves. Between the pay and the company, I think I will take my leave. Best of luck with - well with all of this. with a final look at the crew, she storms out, unwilling to be stopped by anyone.

In the remaining awkward silence, it would seem that everyone was overly focused on the explosion of emotion that no one saw Barek slip out of the temple either.

Alan, as you pick up a hunk of the creature and take a small taste, it's odd. It doesn't hit the spot nearly the same way that meat does. But it also doesn't turn your stomach. It's kind of a weird earthy taste and almost a little sweet. While it's unlikely you'd be able to subsist solely on the stuff, it definitely is edible for a few days here and there.

The creatures themselves don't have much on them in the way of treasure. However, you do find some discarded gear scattered around the room under the vines that cover the walls.

The temple seems quiet still, no sounds of any movement in either of the wing rooms, just the light sound of the breeze blowing through the belfry above.

The bedrolls were very pale beige, once upon a time. However, time and trudgery have turned them a kind of greenish brown. They are still intact, just a bit dingy. IN terms of how many rations, you can get probably a month worth of usable bits off them. You aren't sure how long they'll stay good, however.
Mar 23, 2022 7:31 pm
Alan let's out a hearty laugh ha-ha-ha... You know...you could make a fine comedian. Well... If you promise not to stab me in my sleep then i have nothing to worry about. while laughing he showcases his fangs, small but still distinctively larger than normal cuspids. Milakis innocence had an interesting effect on him and seemingly made him relax. He puts a other plant meat strip in his mouth, before continuing on his garlands.

if none of you need a bedroll, pack them up, the color isn't perfect, but may be good enough to at least be used as a cover to hide our camp.

Claudius, while you investigate the plant creature you notice a few interesting things. The first is that the plants themselves are clearly unnatural. They are a good mimicry of normal plantlife but something seems off about them. You can't quite put your finger on what is wrong with them, but it doesn't remind you of any of the living plants you've dealt with so far in your life.

One thing you do note is that the sap leaking out is causing the natural plant coverage on the ground to start to wither and rot just where the liquid has contacted the plants.

Alan, you would notice this as well when you prepare the plant material for food, but it hasn't caused you any distress or any change in taste, somehow.

Mar 29, 2022 6:55 pm
Milaki holds her nose "Yeah, I agree, I am not going inside there, let's go to the other room" and walks and opens the other door on the right
Mar 30, 2022 7:31 am
Esal continues to watch Alan and Milaki against any sudden attack and is poised to shoot as Milaki opens the door.

"Does it look clear" he asks
Mar 30, 2022 1:38 pm
Alan and Milaki split and go to different doors.

Milaki, as you open up the right hand chamber door, you're meet with a similar scene to the last. Long-destroyed beds and nothing to speak of to collect. However, unlike the other room, this one has a gaping hole in the southern wall where the stones have collapsed under the onslaught of plant life. While structurally not great, it does provide fresh air and keeps the room from having that rot and filth smell of the other chamber.

Alan, you open up the doors to the middle room and see a temple space with six stone pillars bracing a vaulted ceiling. The floor is covered under a thick layer of dust, although several footprints have disturbed the otherwise still space. On the southern end sits a stone altar in an alcove under four narrow windows with a humanoid eye carved into the front. Surrounding the altar are four skeletons in tattered priestly vestments, though two of them look to have been knocked aside.
Mar 30, 2022 1:53 pm
There are some skeletons and eye carvings here, it looks disturbed, they were looking for something, would appreciate religious intel.
Alan turns to the rest of them. Not exactly willing to go any further or disturb anything without information.

Claudius, you recognize the symbol as one of those typically used by followers of Savras. The vestments, or what remains of them, match what little you have heard about their attire.

There is nothing immediately apparent as to their cause of death, though it does strike you as odd that they'd all four be ringed around the altar but not touching it at all. Almost as if they sat down to observe and then just never woke up.

Alan, while you investigate the footprints around the room, you don't tell too much. However you do notice that the altar itself isn't set flush against the floor, it's almost as if it is hovering very slightly.
Mar 31, 2022 4:13 am
Excuse me Claudius, do altars normally hover above ground? Because it looks like this one does he calls out for the magician and points at his finding with his maul.
Mar 31, 2022 6:06 am
This is strange. I didn't notice that while checking signs on the alter and the skeletons around it. Did it just took off or my ayes are getting weak? Claudius puts down his backpack, pull a hunting trap out of it and say religion isn't my field of scientific education, but practice prevail theory and he puts the heavy metal object on top of the altar to see if will bear it's wight (25 lb).

Esal is still worried about a surprise attack from the outer room but hearing the discussions going on in the alter room moves to the doorway of that room. He has his back to the doorway so he can here what the rest of the team are saying whist keeping a look out. "Ask if you want any help" Esal says "I will say on guard at the door"
Apr 1, 2022 12:02 pm
"Let's see what it is inside... maybe more creepy skeletons? '' Milaki says "Shall I open it?''
Apr 1, 2022 1:58 pm
Claudius, you get the feeling that you hadn't noticed before because you were focused on the symbol and bodies and just overlooked the floor itself. Looking closer, it's only a few millimeters off the ground, very easy to miss if you weren't inspecting the floor area.

However, as you go to place your trap on the altar a few things happen. Your hand brushes the smooth stone of the altar's top and the altar itself doesn't appear to shift at all.

Esal, as you stand at the door, you don't hear or see anything that would disturb the peace otherwise.
Apr 1, 2022 3:04 pm
Claudius shakes his head and withdraw his hands "this was unexpected". But in a moment he puts his right hand on the stone to see if the vision would return or extend.
Apr 3, 2022 7:17 am
Claudius are you looking for something to press?

Alan looks at the man, he doesn't wait for an answer, and begins to help him, by randomly touching the altar

As I said religion is not my field. But I just got some obviously divine vision. and Claudius share his vision with others adding. No idea if this was past or future vision or who are they. I don't see how this vision could be of a help. But if it divine indeed, then there should be one

Alan, as you touch the altar, you don't get the same effect and Claudius, touching a second time doesn't seem to cause the vision to come back. Though as you've all spent some time around the stone, you do have a thought that it may move if you try to slide the altar along the floor.
Apr 4, 2022 5:35 am
Ahhh, right I must have confused you.
In the vision a hobgoblin were torturing a human until it gave away that someone is in Conyberry. He killed man right after.
At least's how I understand the vision. But the visions are - you know - abstract.
If that was the same vision the 4 clerics saw before they die. Most probably events of the past.
Useless... No, why would Savras give ME a new vision?

If it does give in to movement Alan will attempt to push the Altar to the side.
Apr 5, 2022 1:41 am
Alan, you put a slight bit of weight into the push and find that it rolls pretty smoothly on carved stone rollers. It glides back about a meter revealing a small cavity under the altar with a small wooden chest inside. It seems undamaged and undisturbed. No dust clings to its surface, likely due to being covered for so long.

After a few moments you hear a rushing sound, like the wind has picked up outside.
Apr 5, 2022 6:17 am
Should this be considered sacrilege? If so should I return the altar?
Apr 5, 2022 9:08 am
Yes it should! Return it quickly Claudius says taking the chest out and put it into backpack. I would hate to leave it for orcs to sacrilege.
He would like to open chest and investigate it's content but not while inside the temple with death smell. He only want to take his hunting trap back and be out of here.
Apr 5, 2022 12:29 pm
You're able to remove the chest and close the altar without concern.

Once outside the temple in the fresh air, you open the chest with ease Claudius. Inside, there are 48 gold pieces, 54 silver pieces, and 360 copper pieces. As you move the coins about, you spot a heavy iron key. The head of the key has a question mark worked into the design.
OOC:
It's currently just past midday. Would you all like to do more investigations around the temple or are you heading further into the surrounding hills? If we don't have a group decision or RP discussion happening tomorrow at about this time, I'll push the group into the hills from there.

I guess donations to the church. I would like return it to church of Savras, but a key... who knows maybe that is an omen we discovered it. Who could carry the chest?
Considering hunting traps Claudius wouldn't carry the chest with the money. He wouldn't be surprised and wouldn't mind if others would decide to own church money, but he will not take even a copper of that. He is however intrigued by key, though he would guess the entry doors before they got broken and restored used to open/close with the key.
OOC:
Conclusion: I am looking forward to move to the hills. I don't see Claudius investigating anything around the temple.
Apr 6, 2022 12:47 pm
Assuming the coins that aren't claimed from the church coffers end up in Milaki's bag (if nowhere else), the group collects their things and sets off into the hills. You remember Radiza leading south into the hills and decided to follow much of the same path. Even though it's new terrain for Esal, he does a fair job guiding you through the hills, avoiding several areas of land that could be very dangerous to cover.

Over the next several hours you hike deeper into the hills until the sun starts to drop beyond the horizon to the west, casting long shadows as it falls. You find a safe place to camp for the evening and set a watch, getting you through the evening without issue. When you wake, a thin sheen of dew covers most surfaces outside your tents and the air has a bit of a nip to it. That said, the sky is clear and the sun bright.
OOC:

For these "exploration" times, if the group doesn't provide instruction I will have Esal act as the "leader" of the hike (given they have the best survival and bonuses to overland travel type work) and will generally have you attempting to go in the compass direction of whatever your last "clue" was. In this case, you are heading generally south.

If, as a group, you want to provide other guidance in regards to what you're doing, please feel free to post how else you're approaching the travel (so you have agency over where you go).

I've updated the map to show where you camped and the general trail you've followed so far.

We were all heated yesterday I believe. and he tries to cheer her up and try to concentrate on Orc business We are close today or maybe tomorrow we could meet Orcs, that when we will need all of your anger, save that anger for them.

Otherwise Claudius stay with his observer role and follow the team wondering around as if he is more interested in exploring the nature around than finding Orcs.

It was a hard day yesterday for Esal but he was pleased to have successfully led the group safely to the overnight camp and he slept well ,feeling he had contributed to the group's wellbeing. He awoke refreshed had his breakfast and then said "While you finish your breakfast I am just going to scout ahead to make nothing is lying in wait to ambush us. I should be back in about one hour then we should be ready to move on. " With that he left keeping a watch for any tracks that might indicate an enemy was near.

Nevertheless. It wouldn't be wrong if you could cary one of the damn heave hunting traps. Setting them up is super simple and if bet bloodthirsty orcs will miss them while attacking us

And he takes one hunting trap out of this backpack and propose Alan to take it

After hearing about his talent Alans eyes slightly widen, Really? The group sets out from their camp after Esal returns from his short scouting mission, having found nothing of interest. As the group walks along through the pleasant (if windy) day, they have plenty of chances to talk and learn more about each other. Esal does spot a few rabbits during the travel, easily taking them with his bow. As the sun moves past the midday mark, you come across a ruined mineshaft entrance. It appears that the entry caved in years ago, with piles of rock and busted timbers covering the entrance. Milaki spends a few minutes inspecting it to make sure it's not a hidden entrance, but it looks to be exactly what it appears.

During the travels, you pass several little copses of trees. Some of them are very small, only a few dozen trees. Others are larger, taking several minutes to completely circle. You take the time to investigate them as you go, and find that they house several small animals (squirrels, rabbits, the occasional songbird nest) and a variety of herbs and plants.

About three hours later, as you continue to the south, you come across another larger copse of trees but as you start to check it out, you hear strange noises deep in the middle of it. It's a mix of crunching leaves, cracking sticks, and general grunting. You don't see anything from the edge of the treeline.

Would you all like to go investigate the sounds or continue on to the south?

This particular copse is maybe 150 feet across at the widest point. Density wise, you can easily see about 30 feet into the copse from the edge before the placement of the trees makes it difficult to spot much else. You do see some boulders in the copse, as well as a few scattered around the landscape you've been walking through. The largest are as tall as Milaki, but most aren't quite so tall.

Claudius, you don't detect anything with your spell as you get close to the edge of the trees. The sounds seem to be coming from the southeast area of the copse. As you're placing your trap, a pack of birds suddenly fly into the air about 120 feet from your position.

Apr 12, 2022 2:42 pm
Esal, you can't for sure say what is causing the disturbance, but you are fairly confident it's whatever is making all the noise that caused the issue.

Milaki and Claudius, as you advance into the woods, you see that the canopy isn't fully formed overhead and the copse has several areas where you can easily see the sky. The trees themselves do seem to thin out a little bit once you're inside the woods, they are just placed very well to form a "fence" of sorts to stop people seeing into the grove.

As you get about to the end of your 50 foot hike inside Claudius, you suddenly pick up the presence of four distinct creatures' thoughts, though you can't quite detect the surface thoughts themselves yet, not until you focus on one of the creatures in particular.
OOC:
Mechanically, how I'm handling the Detect Thoughts is this:

Because they are currently unseen, you are using the portion of the spell to find unseen creatures. Based on the "once you detect the presence of a creature in this way" portion and the fact that all other features of Detect Thoughts requires you to target a single creature, it will be your next "turn" that you pick a "thought signature" to focus on. It will take your action to use any of the features of the spell, which will prevent you from setting up the trap in that moment. I'm not putting us precisely in intiative yet, but doing a semi-initiative kind of approach until initiative precision is required.

For the purposes of your thought signature stuff, you can target:

Creature A
Creature B
Creature C
Creature D
Apr 12, 2022 6:25 pm
Milaki continues in stealth to look around, if she sees an orc, she will just go back to tell them
Apr 12, 2022 7:58 pm

As you talk, you hear the creatures moving through the woods getting closer to you. After about 30 seconds you can sort of see one of them through the trees. Like Milaki described they are large, standing just over two meters tall. Their faces are ugly and somewhat misshapen and they are lugging around a large axe each.

You all figure you have about another 30 seconds before they are actually at your position, though that may happen faster if they notice you. So far, they don't seem to have figured out that you are there.

Claudius, you still sense the four separate throught patterns but only see the two creatures. Do you want to change focus and check the surface thoughts of any of the other creatures?
OOC:
You have about 30 seconds to take actions and do any prep before initiative will happen. You can choose to retreat and try avoiding combat or you can set an ambush and make it happen faster. Claudius, you pick up the following thoughts:

Creature A: Don't fall, don't fall. Step. Step. Heavy, not doing this again.
Creature B: Nest was close, but couldn't reach. Why are we out now?
Creature C: Gu'ruck need lesson. Could just walk into tree. That would teach him.

Alan, you find a solid branch where you can post up for an ambush, with easy access back to the ground without too much hassle. It takes you the full thirty seconds to get yourself up and situated in a way that you can be prepared.

Milaki, you start to skirt around the edges of where they are, putting you about 60 feet from the rest of the group, with the two axe-wielding creatures in the middle.

OOC:
Generally speaking, Surprise doesn't grant you advantage on the attack, unless you have a specific feat/feature that grants it. Surprise means that on their first turn in combat, they are not permitted to take actions and cannot take any reactions until after their first turn. However, your 20 was on the first roll, so still going to count for the crit. And yes, your climbing speed means you can go up/down the tree without incurring checks or penalties.
Claudius sets his trap and moves back, using the underbrush to try hiding his presence a bit. The creatures stumble through the trees, appearing to be relatively uncoordinated. Creature 2 especially seems to be moving in a strange manner, with no real connection to where they are looking. As they stumble, Esal withdraws slightly, just to stay out of reach and sight. Because of their stumbling, the creature doesn't seem to pay attention to the trap and steps right into it! A loud clang sounds out as the metal teeth clamp down and a crunch like a stick being broken eminates from the creature's leg. You watch as the creature wobbles in place, bending oddly, but ultimately staying upright.

Creature 1 continues their path forward, getting close to the tree that Alan is hiding in. As he gets close, the swordsman charges down out of the tree, bringing his sword down in a decisive strike. The blow cuts the creature in half! As the top half flops over, clearly dead, you can see that it was a goblin wearing a skin mask.

The ragged clothes fall off the lower half, revealing a second goblin on heavy stilts with a small wooden platform on his shoulders. Milaki, surprised by the sudden change in target, can't seem to find a good place to stab the creature and misses her jab as Esal looses an arrow at the stilted creature. It slams home into the goblin's chest, silencing the shriek before it can start.

As Creature 2 is surprised, it cannot act, which brings you all up again. If you want to specify upper body or lower body for targeting on the second creature, you may.

Claudius tosses his stone through the air, catching the bugger square in the chest. As it rocks back, arms pinwheeling, Milaki steps in, letting the creature fall back onto her extended blade, killing the poor goblin. Meanwhile, Alan darts in and grabs the bottom goblin, pulling it into a tight hold. As difficult as it is to hold on to the creature, given the size and stilts, it's even harder for the goblin to try twisting out of Alan's grip.

Esal, not wanting a repeat of the events in the shrine nocks an arrow but doesn't shoot at the remaining creature that it looks like Alan is attempting to restrain.

The goblin doesn't seem keen on being grabbed, and it tries to stab Alan with a dagger it slips from its boot! But between being held tightly, the shock of his compatriot falling off his shoulders, and the whole surprise of the last few seconds it can't manage to do anything with the stubby blade.

As Claudius issues his command, the goblin starts to crinkle up his face in a defiant snivel, but looks for a moment at the part surrounding him and considers the speed that they dispatched his other three compatriots.

Claudius speak slow, separating sentences to let goblin process them:
Zrus lives. Lurzook also lives. All goblin lives. IF Zrus shows how to find Orcs in a sneaky way. Your kind know how to do that. Our kind know how to kill. Right?
Apr 29, 2022 12:25 pm
Zrus looks around at the lot of you. He opens his mouth to speak as Milaki starts to loot the corpses of his friends. Hey! Hands off their shinies! THEY AREN'T YOURS! he shrieks.

Milaki, you find 15 copper pieces and a cracked egg that's leaking all over the place.

Zrus thrashes when Milaki comes to him. Orcs not even take our shinies. Big orc talk with Lurzook ten days ago. But they don't know our cave. Lurzook smash orc head. he says, voice full of pride. Lurzook know how to find orcs. You need to talk to him. I can take you if you let me live.

Claudius try to calm down goblin: She is collecting your shines for you. You talk do the work! Right?
Claudius sends telephatic note to Milaki: "Please give the money to goblin! I will pay you back. I want him on our side"

Zrus grins a toothy grin when Milaki hands over the copper pieces, though with him still being bound he can't do much with them.

Yes! Lurzook needs more muscles. You help Lurzook, Lurzook make sure you eat too. Untie me, I'll take you to him!

May 3, 2022 2:58 pm
Claudius to Zrus: We don't trust Zrus. Humans do not trust goblins. Should we? Let's do this - we take your shinies and only give them back to you when we meet Lurzook. How far away is he? Could we still meet him today?

Claudius suggest take money from goblin and untie him and risk following his lead to that Lurzook. It is much believable that goblins should posses information about the orcs. And information is what Claudius value. If that is not too far he could even volunteer to go alone to prevent risking lives of other adventurers.

Also, Claudius pick up his hunting traps before they move on.

Zrus nods his head quickly, eager to keep his hide intact. Zrus understands you well. You untie, I lead, I don't run. I run, I die. Die like Yaelt died. One shot. he says somberly. I'll lead you there. Just let Zrus live.

You untie Zrus and he rubs his wrists before thanking you quickly. The copper pieces disappear into his pockets and he leads you deeper into the copse of trees until you come to a large oak that had fallen over. The trunk is easily over four feet in diameter and the rootball that is exposed reaches nearly ten feet into the air. Zrus looks around before carefully pulling back some heavy moss near one side of the roots, revealing a dark passage beyond.

Zrus lives here. Come come. he says before disappearing into the darkness beyond.

Do you choose to follow him into the tunnel or do you take other action or leave at this point?

Mighty Lurzook, we are to deal with Orks. Zrus say Lurzook not afraid of Orks! Neither are we afraid or Orks. We could together make Orks afraid!
Claudius being not charismatic try to use logic and insight to decide best strategy for this conversation. He try to understand what Lurzook thinks of Orks, that's why he repeat their name in each sentence. He suspect there might be an alliance between goblin and Orcs and Lurzook may or may not be interested in the sabotage Orks or or even open confrontation.

Hmmm, you dislike orcs too? Lurzook says, scratching the few scraggly hairs on his ruddy chin. The orcs tried to run us out of our lair. Bamzhull the Rotten, they say commands them. At least, that's what their brute said. Lurzook showed him what was the answer. he says with a snicker as he pats a rusted scimitar that hangs at his side. Orc has two mouths now, to talk better. He looks over to Zrus. This one had big idea. Pretend to be orcs, scare off other people. Where are the others now Zrus? he sneers with contempt.

Zrus looks own at the dirt and kicks his feet softly. Bigfolk killed them. Before they could say anything. Faster even than Lurzook killed the orc. They are strong Lurzook. he says sheepishly.

They killed goblins and you bring them into our home!? he says, a touch of fear swirling in his eyes at the thought that he may be killed outright in their own home. But alongside that, you can easily see the conniving part of his brain working trying to figure out how to use this to his advantage.
May 24, 2022 3:59 pm

Milaki says: ''Yes! I am also hungry! We missed second breakfast and lunch!!!''
May 27, 2022 12:09 pm
Food?! You tell me you mistakenly kill three of our kin and now you want food? Lurzook says, seemingly surprised. Perhaps you can earn food. You agree to go kill Bamzhull, you can have saltfish. Claudius thinks aloud Bamzhull is not alone, is he? What would be the best thing to attract them with? Do they love shinies?
May 30, 2022 2:13 pm
Lurzook's eyes fill with a greedy twinkle. Bamzhull is not alone, he has a whole crew of his own, six of them. Maybe eight. Watch for his mage, Hef the Wrathful. She is even worse than he is. They like weak travelers. We watch from shadows and trees. They ruin road, wait for travelers to wreck and then move in. Play weak, they come for sure. he says, cackling softly.

With even the slightest bit of thought, this seems to match up with some of the reports you'd gotten in your chats with the townsfolk.
May 30, 2022 2:21 pm
Lurzook, right? Sounds roughly like the orcs were looking for, but i have a question, what are you planning on doing once we deal with them? Alan crosses his arms and eyes the goblin...
May 30, 2022 8:21 pm
Lurzook, say Goblin will not show us Bamzhull? Goblin afraid of orcs?
Lurzook say goblin watch orcs from shadows and trees. Prove it. Let's go watch.

Claudius sends telephatically to Milaki: I wouldn't risk eating goblin food. I will pretend to order you not to if it appears to be disgusting
Jun 2, 2022 12:52 am
It's not nighttime, old bigfolk. Can't watch when orcs aren't out! You stay, we show you tonight. Sit, play cards. Or we can show you where we watch them now and you watch for them at night. And yes, I am afraid of Bamzhull. Out there. In here, no. Out there, he would squash Lurzook like a maggot. he says, lowering his voice so his admission of fear doesn't travel beyond your ears. Almost as an afterthought, he looks to Alan. We continue to live as we did before orcs. Scavenging the woods.
Jun 2, 2022 8:53 am
Claudius will use his telepathy to share his thoughts with Milaki and Alan (you can't answer me the same way unfortunately)
I prefer to go back pick clothes goblins used to pretend being tall creatures and use them to set up face camp on the road when goblins point us best location. We would hide around and ambush Orcs when they try to attack fake creatures around the bonfire.

I don't like idea to sneak upon them while they are searching the road for caravans, but my ability to see in dark is very limited
If they have spell caster among them, who knows if they wouldn't find Us before we find them.

Claudius pretends to be considering options and says hmm, right, right.... let me... maybe... aloud while communicating with team members.

Jun 6, 2022 8:15 pm
I ... decided. nervously start Claudius. We should probably have Lurzook to show us the place... I mean that's what we do. Lurzook show us the place. he looks at and adds - now with certainty in the voice No saltfish until job is done ! Let's go!
Jun 7, 2022 1:39 pm
Lurzook nods. We will take you and show you the place. But we don't go now. We wait an hour so Zrus can take you. He has chores to do first. the goblin boss says with a smile. You can sit in there, or find a cave that you like. Don't touch our things or you won't see our spot. he says grimly.

It's clear from his tone, there'll be no negotiation on the subject of timing. Seeing the lack of flexibility, your group spends the next hour in the goblin caves making whatever plans and preparations you'd be able to in advance of seeing the place. Based on your talking together, you figure that setting up a fake camp wouldn't be too difficult, though you won't have anything that resembles a wagon or cart. If you're out at night, the campfire will cast 40 feet of bright light and another 40 feet of dim light beyond that (so long as the fire is actively burning). Once it dies down, the lighting drops to the 20 feet bright and 40 feet dim of a torch.

After about an hour, Lurzook and Zrus come find you, the smaller goblin clearly nervous looking. Zrus is ready to take you now. Good luck. Lurzook says, shoving Zrus towards you all.

With his piece said, the goblin boss disappears back into the caves and Zrus nervously leads you back to the entrance you all used earlier. When you get outside, you can see that the sun is starting to set, brilliant flame colors splashed across the sky. Over the two hours it takes you to walk from the cave entrance to their observation spot, you notice you've left the one wooded grove you had been in and are approaching a second. This one is smaller and has the remnants of camps along the edge of the wood. Here is where we watch. These woods. They come down on that side, see where the trail comes close? That's where they attack. Zrus says, pointing out a barely etched in set of dirt trails in the grass.

As you start setting up your camp, Zrus climbs up into a tree and hides, though you notice he didn't bring any weapons with him. It will take you about forty minutes or so to set up a convincing camp and find your own hiding places in the woods.
OOC:
Will leave you all here for the day so you can fill in some RP in between or make any tweaks to how your camp is set and to describe your general hiding place (or what you're trying to find).

While waiting for the goblin Alan will wander around the caves, he is a bit suspicious, If they already disguise themselves as orcs, why not use their name for their own good...

When walking with the goblin he asks the little thing Hey... what got you so scared?

At the place he immediately begins his preparations for the camp. He takes out the old sleeping bags and begins to stuff them with sand, while using his shovel, if they show that there are a lot of 'sleeping bodies' and only a single old man awake, it will tempt the orcs.... After which he goes hunting for small game to have for dinner...

Claudius trying to explain his plan to the rest of the group - Milaki and Esal wait on the trees to snipe down the spell caster, while he and Alan wait some 100 foot away. First orcs will come to check camp and he will fire at them to attract Orcs attacking on him. When most of the orcs run his way, Milaki and Esal attack and finish the spell caster. Claudius hides on the tree and...
But then he realize he has no idea if the orcs will run his way, if the spell caster will even stay behind and ... to much ifs. He just don't have the experience to manage the risks. He gives up any planning and hope everyone know what they have to do.

Anyhow he sets up his 3 hunting traps through the fake camp and then try to find best shooting position about 100 feet away from it.
Well I guess I do the obvious. Anyhow -The stars forecast we win this fight! he claims and whispers if my readings but shuts up now finishing the terrifying thought.
Claudius shares his own planned course of actions with the party:
I will be over there ans shoot first or who come close enough into the camp. I suggest we hold off firing until then
OOC:
If possible Claudius would like to hide 100 foot from fireplace. Preferably to have difficult terrain on some part of the distance between him and fireplace. Next to a tall tree - in worst case he will turn into spider and climb up the tree.
Jun 9, 2022 2:44 pm
Your group manages to get your fake camp set and a fire blazing. Alan, you're able to easily find a few rabbits on your hunt, taking another thirty minutes to do so, causing you to hunt as the sun sinks below the horizon.

Claudius, you're easily able to find a place about 100 feet away in the edge of the trees. You take about twenty extra minutes to ensure that the stones and brush around the camp is turned into difficult terrain, forming a ring of about 25 feet around the camp.

Esal and Milaki both find hiding places as well, just out of range of the light from the camp.

You settle into your positions and wait, the sounds of evening bugs chirruping in the otherwise calm night. Your bonfire continues to burn brightly, sending flickering shadows across the ground. What seems like hours pass by as the stars prick the velvet sky. Finally, as the sliver of the moon swoops high overhead, you all hear movement in the distance. Just at the edge of the light, you see three humanoid figures and one four-legged creature. The four-legged creature only comes up to about the knee of the humanoids. They are approaching from the opposite side of the camp from where you are set up. One of the humanoids raises a hand in a fist and the group stops. They make some short hand movements and the group splits apart. Two humanoids move around one side of the light while the four-legged creature and the other humanoid move along the opposite side.

I can work on a formal map later, but for right now, in general we have this:
The camp is in the middle of a circle.
You are all hidden in the trees about 100' away from the camp between a 9 and 12 on the clock.
The others are approaching from the 4 on the clock. They split and one group is moving anti-clockwise (4 legged and humanoid). The other group is moving clockwise (2 humanoids). They are staying about 30 feet outside the edge of the light.

Clarification: creatures move 30 feet outside of the bright light and they are in the dim light, correct? Otherwise my PC would not see them
Claudius stands still, frozen, afraid even to breath. He could hear his hart beating like crazy. What am I doing? I'm not 18 any more he thinks. And the letter from a dead colleague posing a question you have not yet been able to answer. He could feel that letter in his pocket as if would weight few pounds.
OOC:
Claudius is certainly not ready to initiate the fight. And too afraid to do anything until fight begins.

OOC:
They are 30 feet outside the dim light. However, given the terrain and everything, i am ruling you can tell that there are figures but no detail other than silhouettes. Which is why you cant tell more than humanoid and four legged creature at the moment.

I see. Now I'm scared just as my PC, because enemies do it exactly at the distance from camp that my PC decided to be in.
But I would change his action. He is frozen in terror of inevitable fight against 8 orcs ... in a company of wolfs or something

Milaki looks around with hesitation. She thinks that she doesn't want to cause trouble to the group again and waits for the enemies to come closer to the fire, while she goes in stealth closer too.

Stealth - (1d20+5)

(12) + 5 = 17
