Hi guys!

Sorry it took me days to make a post in introductions, it's been over a decade since I used a forum like this and I forgot how to navigate and use one, lol.

I love reading about TTRPGs and I've been itching to get more into it. I was introduced to the hobby a few years back when a co-worker of mine invited me to play Shadowrun. I remember being overwhelmed with all the rules but I thought it was all a part of the TTRPG experience, I later found out that Shadowrun was one of the more crunchy games out there lol, I remember our group quickly switching from paper to Chummer. I later played D&D for a while but both groups fizzled out. I tried starting a group a couple of times but I couldn't find a proper group of people whose schedules aligned. The real hard part of TTRPG isn't learning the ruels, it's finding a group that can meet regularly, lol. In the meantime I've been playing a bunch of solo games like Ironsworn and using the mythic gm emulator

I heard about this place a while back when I was looking at PBP places, I tried rolegate for a bit, but the games I joined fizzled out pretty quickly, and the app just didn't want to work properly on my phone. I saw someone give a nice long writeup about how good gamersplane was, so I decided to join.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Welcome, sunnyVoid!

You've tried out a couple of things already, but just in case, heres some helpful links.

If you want to see how GP functions, here are links to the New GP Member Guide, the forum rules, this video introduction made by user Qralloq and a little helpful formatting guide made by user Adam. You might also be interested in looking through some public games as well to get a feel for the site.

To join a game, keep your eyes on the Games Tavern, where GMs advertise their games and look for players.

And here's your customary πŸ‹come buddy.
Having a hard time finding the time to play in person led me to pbp; turns out it's just what I needed, having a wee one running around as well.

Ain't that the truth. :)

Welcome.

hi sunnyVoid, welcome to this fun gaming platform!

(PS: I see you have listed Shadowrun in your games of choice, ping me if you ever decide to run it! I'd love to try it)

Hey SV and welcome,

I think games are less likely to fizzle out here because the people stick around.

I see from your profile that you've played the tutorial and you're looking for an OSR game. Maybe take a look at vagueGM's Fresh Faced Adventurers (World of Dungeons)?

You are welcome to join us in the Fresh Faced Adventurers game, but note that it is not actually OSR, nor even OSR-adjacent. It is just rules-lite PbtA.

If that interests you --and given your Shadowrun leanings-- there is also a Cyberpunk equivalent of that, but that has much less interest than fantasy does, so it is empty at this time.

It's not? Huh! I thought OSR just meant "not DnD 5e" πŸ˜‰

Yeah? What would you know about "not DnD 5e"? :)

If FFA is straight World of Dungeons, it certainly has some OSR blood in its veins. It's Harper's old-school and minimalist take on Dungeon World, right? Character sheet kind of tells the story.

Man... I so badly wanted Rolegate to be good.

But yea, community was just chock full of flakes.

UI wasn't ideal. Poor integration for things like images and such...

Just didn't work.

Anyway, you've found a great place! Welcome.

SunnyVoid is an excellent user name btw. Super jealous, haha.

Hope you find some great games, but if you have a hard time, hit me up and we'll see if we can get you hooked up.

Definitions vary, of course, and World of Dungeons (WoDu) emulates and reimagines 'old-school', and is minimalist. But many who look for 'OSR' want that 'true DnD experience' and, being how this follow Dungeon World (DW), this does not feel like DnD (though many say DW feels like what they thought DnD would be).

I know people who run OSR modules in WoDu, but that requires some work since it is not 'drop-in compatible'.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

Nice, I'd like to check it out. I've heard good things about World of Dungeons. The only PbtA game I've really played was Ironsworn, but that was a purely solo experience.

Thanks but I probably won't be running it anytime soon lol. Shadowrun 5e really spoiled me with it's in-depth character creation (which I felt was the more robust aspect of the game), it made d&d feel shallow in comparison, I felt a sort of culture shock. But I've learned to love d&d in it's own way, and it's definitely a lot more easy to run than Shadowrun.

For how minimalist OSR games are, the discussion of it and what constitutes an OSR game can be pretty complex lol. I never properly played one, but the philosophy behind it seems very appealing. I'd love to try out a B/X game sometime.

Me too, I love the idea behind it and I hope it gets better in the future. PBP focused apps seem to have great potential, but I haven't found one that was better than easily accessible good old fashioned forum posts. I tried starting a Discord PBP campaign, but the 7 people that joined from r/pbp flaked out in just a few days of joining lmao. I'll wait until I have some experience as a PBP player before I try that again.

Jump on in. We are (probably) soon to descend into the bowels of a long-dead, corrupted temple, and joining the party before that would be easier to explain. But no pressure, it is a drop-in, drop-out game so we have to cater for players --and their characters-- arriving and vanishing at odd times.

Do you know how to Request to Join, or should I Invite you?
sunnyVoid says:

Ironsworn is awesome, but rather different to most PbtA. And that is more than just the solo focus.
sunnyVoid says:

Ironsworn can play really well in traditional GM-lead style, and can be awesome co-op with the right players.
sunnyVoid says:

I am not sure I even agree with talking about minimal and OSR together, most of the OSR games I have looked at are pretty heavy, or at least long.
sunnyVoid says:

Maybe it is just the rabid fanboys that put me off, but I don't like what I see about the OSR philosophy.

I have had success with Discord games, but only when run for people I already know. One of the main benefits we get from a site like this is the community. Random strangers on the internet do not make for reliable games.
