[Interest Check] Open Legends: A Star Once Fallen

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

Hi all! I want to try out Open Legends, as it seems to be a flexible system with rule ideas that I am interested in. So I want to practice first with this intro adventure.
Module description:

Marooned on an uncharted island, caught between two warring tribes, and threatened at all hours by a dormant volcano
prophesied to awaken again. Can our brave heroes discover
the legend of Starfall Island before they fall prey to its denizens?
In this introductory adventure, you’ll learn the basic
rules for Open Legend by playing through an adventure.
One player will take the part of the game master (or GM)
and be responsible for directing the adventure and controlling the enemies, monsters, and non-player characters
(NPCs). The rest of the players will act as the player characters (or PCs), each controlling a hero of legend who will
accomplish great things.
If you enjoy this basic set, be sure to check out the full
rules, available for free at www.openlegendrpg.com

If you are interested, do also give me an idea of the character you want to play as.

You begin as an adventurer that is paid to protect a trading ship from pirates, and your destination is the City of Sails. Maybe you want to get easy gold from this side job, or maybe your goal is to get a free ride to the port city to seek better opportunities.

Period: Medieval fantasy/Age of Discovery.
Non-human races allowed.

I might just be on the cusp of having one too many games, but doggonit, I'm certainly intrigued! I'll be reading through the rules over the weekend.
Though, as far as character ideas go, the frst one coming to mind is a surly dwarf with a heart of gold. I don't play dwarfs as often as I like, so that's really coming to me.

Nice! Character creation is best done with a good idea of your character. Then hunt for the options that do want you want to be able to do.

Hmm, would a down on his luck human fighter/knight work? He's looking to restore his family name to it's former glory.

I'd certainly like to participate ! A game of Exalted I partook in just dropped, and this game seems to scratch the same itch. I'd personnally love to get more into the heroic/tragic aspect of our heroes -kinda like ancient mythos-, but that'll depend on the group's style I guess ^^.

Just one question: Do one needs to own the book to participate ?

I had never heard of this system, and now I am going to go look at the rules because I am interested. I don't have a concept yet though, so I won't jockey for a spot against people who might have things a little more together already. I'll be back once I have a little more understanding to see if there is still availability~

Edit: That didn't take as long as I thought it would. System seems interesting enough, I'd love to give it a go. I'm thinking a lifetime mariner, someone who was born at sea and expects to die the same way (hopefully that volcano won't steal that from the sea in the meantime!)

I see that I am slowly getting more interests.

@Rattila , You don't need to own anything. You can look up the rules online for Open Legends. Only I have to see the module.

My idea is to have minimum 3 players, and maximum 6 players.

Also, if you feel you're getting too busy to manage another game, maybe don't push yourself before we start. Because I hope to avoid players leaving early in the game. But if you believe you can manage, go ahead to still join even if you may be absent for a week. If I fail to be active in a week, I'll compensate with Exp.

Also, I guess the module description is spoiler, but I still want to give you a heads up to avoid OOC disappointment. Your character will have goals and plans as they took the ship ride, but they will find themselves stuck on an island, where their bravery, hope and cleverness will be tested.

Btw, what do you guys think about showing the map? Shall I reveal the full map at an early point of the Adventure so you can explore the island better, or shall we do bit by bit reveal of the area only you have seen?

Tbh, I wouldn't mind getting the map early on to have a better idea of what to do.
As far as playing goes, I have been known to go silent for a bit, but that usually doesnt stop me from posting on the weekend. If I don't post between Sunday and Friday, it's likely that work kept me too busy.

Btw, the module has a character Creation method that is more simplified. You can go with the one in the online core rules, or you can go with the beginner's one. Note that the beginners one do away with extra character quirks, feats, and have a limited starting equipment.

Let me know if you want it.

I'm torn on the map thing, since the island is specifically supposed to be uncharted, but having the map would definitely give us a little more direction and focus. As for posting, I should be able to manage one most days, at the very minimum every other day.

Ok, I do have a bit of an idea now.

I'd like to play as some kind of magic vegetal golem -if that makes sense-, last among his brothers, created by Ancient, sentient Trees long-gone, centuries ago. Only recently -about a decade ago- was he allowed to quit his native forest, he would be traveling the earth in the pursuit of knowledge and meaning of their existence. As tho they can live for millennia, they cannot reproduce, and are thus condemned to disappear completely one day, since their progenitors are no more.

Open Legend is a very interesting and flexible system that I've dabbled in before, and I'd love a chance to play with further. I'm thinking of a magician, possibly the ship's mage of the ill-fated vessel. He's an expatriate from a landlocked desert nation who wields the elemental arts of sand, salt, storm and surf.

I think I'll be fine enough with the online rules, honestly. They seem rather easy and straightforward. I was half tempted to go ahead and make it last night, but I might later today.

I just noticed that a few rules of the beginner's version is inconsistent with the core rules. Maybe it is rebalanced with the expectation that players won't level up, and that max attribute is 5.

Then this is one of the ways I will change. We will use the core rules only, and I will reward 1 XP for every challenge or special story events performed. For example, winning a fight encounter or chase scene. You don't have to kill every enemy in a fight encounter to win it. If you run from a fight, either you escape easily and not gain XP, or you have to survive a chase scene.

With this, you can have access to all the rules in the online version, and can level up during your adventure on the island.

I thought the online rules were easier to use anyway, honestly, despite the fact that they provide more flexibility, which is kind of amusing.

I'm playing through the starter adventure at the moment, and we're definitely finding that a few rules are not always well explained in the starter kit, but the online resource fills in what's missing. Players should be fine, as long as the GM knows where to look up the rules.

Shall we start writing our sheets before you select the players or afterward ?

I've already started because the ADHD bit of my brain wanted the dopamine fix of making yet another character XD

Hunh, I never felt a statement before. Though I'm an entirely different sort of neurodivergent.
