Ye Olde Tavern in the nexus of worlds for you lot to converse outside of your characters

Just read your house rule on magic. I am not interested in playtesting such a system so if that is an integral part of your homebrew, I will withdraw and wish you luck with the game.

Questions about house rules:
How paladin divine smite will work if there are no spell slots?
Could I cast out of combat endlessly until satisfied? Spells such as cure wounds, false life, all sorts summoning spells, etc?
When summon or druid wild shape - will we use phb monster stats or your homebrew

We'll be just using the Spell Points from the DMG, as Verrain has protested against the rule I found via an article. If we were still using it, you would still roll outside of combat. As far as animals go, you'll still use those found in the books. The custom stuff only differs a bit from the normal.

Actually I have one decision to make: do you mind if I play a druid , Circle of the Shepherd, that heavily rely on summoning/conjuration spells?
I avoid playing such PC in online/irl games as it slows down combat. In PBP it could add extra work for DM to manage i.e. "Eight beasts of challenge rating 1/4 or lower" on top of everything else.
Another subclass i would like to play is start and I would max summon single creature (Summon beast or summon elemental), but having spell points you may not like following sublass feature:
"You can cast guiding bolt without expending a spell slot. You can do so a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest."
Would this feature work like "without spending spell points" ? Would it fail your purpose of making spell resource management simpler?

I'm also a firm believer in rolling unmodded saves for the monsters when I cast a spell that calls for a save. Let's say I cast Hold Person on an enemy. Then I roll unmodded saves and informs of the DC. Then all the GM have to add is the monsters modifiers to see if it passes or not. I can even narrate the result if its a clear pass or a clear fail. If the die roll and the DC are just 4-5 points apart, then leave it for the GM to interpret

Well, I mean I've seen DMs who want to double check or even be in control of HP, AC and conditions for my PC and my minions.
Also - if we would have battle map instead of TotM then moving my summonings around the map
But even with TotM and player managing their minion status I still see a burden, because:
I will use my minions to surround enemies and either block them from moving or have each minion to opportunity attack them... it could become messy. Probably. Actually I have no idea, I was just afraid it could be a problem
If DM is fine with minion swarm, then I'm happy to play Shepherd.

Similar question, I am considering playing a goblin. How are goblins considered in your setting?
Feb 2, 2022 7:17 pm
Oh wow, I just realized I forgot to add a few races... After going down a list too :p Yeah, tieflings are around in the world.
In terms of goblins, you've got some that are still roaming around like bandits, but there's a good count that have decided to make peace with humanoids.
As a bit of errata since I forgot a few races:
Satyr
Tabaxi
Tortle
Warforged

How made them? Why? What was their purpose? Is that purpose still valid?

It's a bit in the early stages with my world, but, the warforged were discovered inside of curious, ancient ruins that seemingly randomly spring from the ground and lead down below. Some were inactive, and those that weren't, were either hostile, trying to protect something inside, or friendly. Any warforged found in the world are likely to be one of the friendlier type. Though, there are a few that were made recently, in an attempt to understand their workings. If they were made recently, they have a high chance of coming from the floating mage island of Mistral City.

I am now seriously considering a warforged/autognome in white ceramics just like the Alita Battle Angle "Doll" body
She would definitely be girl sized with every problem that entails. A very small medium warforged or an autognome if you don't judge that one to powerful.
There is beautiful artwork here and a
wonderfull animation

Would the UA slime race be acceptable? If not no big deal, I can wait till it's official lol. If acceptable it would be a dragon origin sorcerer. I find the idea of a slime with dragon ancestry somewhat amusing.

So regarding Magic Points, will warlocks still be using their regular spell slots? The DMG doesn't mention them so I assume that they have their slots as normal. Just want to make sure this is the case in this game.
Feb 3, 2022 12:06 am
I was also going to bring up that warlock situation. I'm fine using regular spell slots.

Actually, that'd probably be simple. Since warlocks cast at their highest slot level, all point cost would be that of such. Since normal casters have 44 points at 8th level, and it costs 6 points to cast a 4th level spell, you'd be casting up to seven 4th level spells, rounded down. I'd say that any remaining points would then go to the next highest available level if they cannot be used for the highest known.
Which, after running the math real quick, leaves the use of one 1st level.

On closer inspection, it might be best to keep warlocks on their spell slots, as the points, as I could've sworn, do not include warlocks due to them casting at max, resting, invocations, etc.

What's your policy on custom spells? I basically want to change the element of two existing spells. I can do this with Metamagic but if I can just alter the elements I can chose a different metamagic instead
Feb 6, 2022 6:26 am
If you can do it with metamagics then that is how you do it. Reflavoring the effects to fit your concept is fine. Like an earth Mage who misty steps in a dustdevil instead of mist. But changing the element, fire to cold, for instance, alters the game balance in regards to monster resistances. You can do it with feats and metamagics, so it should not be free
That's my thoughts anyway

Feb 6, 2022 10:03 pm
For now, I'd like to keep spells as they are, so runekyndig's suggestion for flavor text will be the best bet.
Sorry for the silence btw. Needed a mental recharge. The first seven days of February are a bit fraught with sadness due to two birthdays. I'll look over everyone's characters later tonight when I have the time. The game will start in earnest next weekend.

Are people ready to introduce their character?
If we have worked a mission together, what was it. From the gear I kind of assume it was something to do with a dwarven brewery. Does our GM have a plan for the brewery mission, or can we each tell something good and something not-so-good that our character did on that mission?

I am clear about my PC personality and values. As for her worldview and deeds - it depends on the world and the entities living in that world and values that those entities bear...
well just a fancy way to say I am to ready to say what my PC have or have not done in the world before I know anything about the world. I consider one of the most important aspects of druid - define the greater purpose she she is in this world for.
Meanwhile: My druid will not be disconnected from society, she is very much social, but she see herself more like wilderness emissary among humanoids. She is actively seeking those who threaten wild places and could be could be wrathful towards them.

I've just realised I missed the fact that money is not something we have accumulated through adventuring (which should have ben quite a lot for lvl 8), but as a one time reward for saving a city. I would - if DM allows it - say that my druid distribute some of my gold reward among other team members. I only take 250 gp and other 500 are split: additional 125 go each. Could I do so and remove the other items I've just gathered and stay with starting gear + Summon Beast material component.
I would announce my PC, being a druid, didn't protect the city on the purpose (or maybe she were seeking to eliminate those riders who did something unforgivable to wild animals). For that reason she didn't felt earned the reward, but accepted 200 gp because that was the cost of spell material she were looking for. That would make whole more sense for a druid

An interesting way to go. I don't see any reason to deny that, but the extra money may not be used to buy any further magic items.

Judea arrived at the city during Getränkefest, just moments before the raid began. She looks to be a small petite girl, with very big eyes, hiding her features in her cloak. A raiders axe was just about the fall on an exquisite sculpture when her sword caught the axe.
She dropped her cloak at danced through the raid with sword and spell. Her mechanical body, with beautiful decorations, was live and fluid, but merciless. (That was the good thing)
This emissary of the warforged, has a hight disadvantage, and that meant that she could not see the kobolt and gobling defending some civilians behind a table, laden with beer and sausages. When her thunder wave spell toppled a raider, it also send beer and meat products raining down over her follow defenders (that was the not-so-good thing)

I have problems imagining my PC "adventuring" for the stake of adventuring, but she just have a talent to get involved in all sorts of dangerous undertakings. I would like to assume our paths crossed and we happened to fight side by side. Getränkefest is where we meet again.

There were two funny thoughts that occured to me recently.
1) Not a single person in the party is a martial class; you're all spellcasters with 3 arcane and 2 divine
2) Three of you are of the smaller races while the others are nearer to normal heights.
Oh the motley crew I'm playing with XD
On that note, depending on how I'm feeling, I may make the intro post in a bit tonight, if not while I'm waiting at the Mechanic's to look at my car. I'm annoyed my thought juices haven't brought me more for my worldbuilding, but alas, it's better to stew some meat rather than fry it, to get the tender bite.
I definitely want to thank you all for playing and helping me with my world.

"Run, dogs, or burn in the light of my Empyrean lord, Tantalus Hyperuranus!"
Talyn shouted similar things as the fight progressed like he was reciting a script... and he was. When he'd been recruited into the Empyrean's Praetorians down in the Underdark, the fallen godling who ran the adventuring company promised him ever-increasing power so long as he spread the name and goodness of Tantalus Hyperuranus far and wide. Little did Talyn know that would involve doing mostly good works in his patron's name, much less that it would lead him to the surface. Yet here he was: a Drow ironically brimming with light and fire doing good deeds to help a spoiled godchild get back into the good books of its celestial parents.
A wall of fire surrounded and roasted another dozen invaders alive.
Talyn didn't mind helping others. He even found it enjoyable considering how thankful and generous those he helped usually were. The others who stepped up to drive back the horde were an odd mix but Talyn knew to take assistance when it appeared. He wondered how the city officials and citizens would react to being helped by such beings but his experience in the place so far told him that rich rewards lay in their future. He didn't even mind when the automaton rained meat and beer down over him as it took out a raider. The fight didn't last long after that.
While later accepting the city's thanks and tokens of appreciation in the main square, Talyn again briefly spoke to the assembled throng about the beneficence of his patron without whose power and grace he could not have helped those who fought beside him save the city. This motley band might be useful to him if they stayed together for a while, Talyn thought.

@DM, I assume this is most probably irrelevant, but I would feel more comfortable describing my PC action if I could understand the details of what is around at the range of sight. I don't need a map, answer to those questions would be enough:
1. Approximately how big the caravan is (few wagons, 10 of them, half-hundred, more? )
2. How far are we from the lead wagon ? Either in number of wagons or in feets
3. Vision and Light (in DnD terms) - how does " the rising autumnal sun" translates : is it bright light/ dim light/darkness at the moment
4. Are there forest, bushes or other means to hide to left and right of the caravan?

2. 1 wagon, you were riding in the second. The other 2-3 are for goods
3. It's a sunny afternoon with very few clouds

I have a question about player initiated history, religion, arcana checks. Could I just roll it and ask what my PC remember about X even in a middle of the combat or recalling knowledge is some active activity that takes time and I need to physically interact with objectI try to recall information about? i.e. should I describe action that would allow my PC to recall something?
[ +- ] some context/details
As a player I know that undead in 5e "dead creatures magically returned to life"
However I've played homebrew game where DM invented a disease that turned live creature into a zombie within 24 hours and once turned into zombie it could infest further. However in that game it was part of common knowledge - naturally such zombies caused pandemic in the past and required church and paladins to eliminate.
So I am more than happy that undead in a DnD game is not what I'm used them to be un DnD, but I just want to understand how to properly distinguish between my player knowledge and PC knowledge.

For recalling knowledge, I'm fine with it just being more of an instantaneous action rather than requiring anything from your actual turn.

Putting this here just as a heads up for the coming weeks.
I'm currently in the process of getting my ex packed up and ready to move somewhere within the ball park of the middle of the month, so roughly 2 weeks-ish. There's been plenty of stress about it that I rarely get the rest I need over the weekends or even the work nights. The stress has kept my mind in a bit of a stunted state in regards to creativity and actual enjoyment. Having chronic depression on top of that doesn't make it any better either.
I've been trying to rest on posting, as in not forcing myself to post to get it up rather than giving a post that actually gets across what it should: an adventure for the mind. The stress gad already affected some of my posts as I had forgotten multiple things that I had thought I included.
In short, I'm just putting myself on a reduced posting rate to easy my worries and save myself from burning out ere long. I'll likely have an actual post for the game up tomorrow night/Friday morning.

I have to figure out if I'm going to play the same concept in two games or drop out of one of the games

two questions about the world/ rules
1. Does this apply.:
A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your classâs spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible.
2. my understanding of undead and not just dnd rules is that only a dead creature could turn into undead. that means someone should have killed all the sheeps before reading the scroll.
Probably magic works differently in your world for boy to be telling the truth?

2. my understanding of undead and not just dnd rules is that only a dead creature could turn into undead. that means someone should have killed all the sheeps before reading the scroll.
Probably magic works differently in your world for boy to be telling the truth?
Apr 5, 2022 6:22 am
It is not a scroll, it is a page from a spell book. Annex misspoke.
As far as undead go, I've heard of other things in d&d turning living things to undead without the prior having been previously alive.

Please don't get me wrong. I do not want want to argue about logic or mechanics. I just want how would my PC see the events. I get answer that she should not be surprised about turning living creatures into undead by just reading words from the page.
I would also like to know should my PC think that it is possible magic effect did not require boy to be a spell caster and any commoner would do the same?
P.S. It is scary though that the BBEG will be able to turn our PCs into undead regardless of HP we have.

I'm going to introduce a new character, should he have been there all along or should we write him in and Judea the warforged wizard out?

Also, how'd you read my notes!? Don't make me cast Modify Memory!

Q: How Detect Magic works in this world?
Do I read right that spell don't just detect "presence of magic", but is also able to see the past of magic used.
Are there any rules for how long and where does the aura manifest itself or is it "on DM discretion" ?
P.S. As an example of ruling I could share my homebrew rule I used in a one one-shot: aura stay for N hours where N is spell level and it stay on:
1. Spell target. If target is area then in the area.
2. On material component (or spell casting focus) or if there is no material component - on the spell caster on caster
But I have seen DMs who rule that aura could even stay on objects touched by spell affected creatures and such. That is also fine. I just want to believe that my PC who knows the spell since lvl 1 have learned by lvl 8 what could this spell learn about history of spell usage.

I've been of the mind to try and ignore the mechanics of spells for something that might move the story along so long as it is not totally out of the bounds. So yeah, DM's discretion fits the bill.

healing magics do fall under the realm of necromancySo could you clarify please, is it the expected behaviour for detect magic to show necromancy aura on a healing potion, or does it mean that priest have a corrupted version ver healing potion?
Apr 28, 2022 10:38 pm
Oh wow, you're right on that. I was thinking of Pathfinder 2e where it's labeled necromancy. The potions would actually show more an aura for evocation. Thanks for catching that, Grey. Take a point of inspiration for pointing that out.

I have one more question about current game state, is this fair overview:
1. I've declared action for my PC next hour
2. Talyn, Leif and G'nark have discovered that detect magic is the silver bullet in the situation and are gathering more necromantic artefacts.
3. Varn - looks like the player have abandoned the game
Now I am waiting for Talyn, Leif and G'nark to decide on their PC next actions. Is that right? The last post is with "We need to find..." statement by PC, no actions taken.

Looks like Kirin is just MIA from all. Says he was last seen around 11 days ago.
And yeah, I'm waiting on them to state their next move before moving things along.

We have found now 3 dark items dropped by this individual. We can search around for more, but to my knowledge, the individual has left and non of us can track him.
The only thing we can do to advance this plot is to search the town for my items and then take them to a propper temple / mage to have the items neutralised.
These thoughts have Leif already shared. I don't know what else we can do at this moment

can't it be that players are waiting on DM while DM waiting on players to post right now?
P.S. I have a feeling at least some of the items were not "dropped", but placed on a purpose.

It was just a page from a spellbook. Annex was the only one to call it a scroll.
In any case, I'll move us along soon then

Just me. Had a bad depression spike last week, so finding motivation to do much was ungodly difficult. Feeling a lot better now though. I'm gonna get a post up later tonight once I get back home. I'd get it up at work, but my connection has been spotty lately and, on top of that, got busy work :p. Were it a normal week, I could've gotten a post up yesterday TuT

Depression sucks - I have been there, and did not enjoy it. But for me just knowing that you are battling depression changes my expectations of the game (Give the GM some more slack). Please tell us if my post was inappropriate or if it was a helpful nudge to get out of the funk

Clarification: prusx do not have a permanent familiar. Prusx could Ad Hoc summon a fay familiar to server them for a purpose, but they are only bound to be in this world for 4 hours. So she would normally have familiar during the day, but not during the night
[ +- ] Wild Companion
2nd-level druid feature
You gain the ability to summon a spirit that assumes an animal form: as an action, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape feature to cast the find familiar spell, without material components.
When you cast the spell in this way, the familiar is a fey instead of a beast, and the familiar disappears after a number of hours equal to half your druid level.

Distance calculation on grid - question
Hate to ask this technical question, but I believe it will significantly affect my next turn, so which of following methods do we use if any

Ahhhh, a very good question! There is the cone function that I used earlier if that might help with on the map visualization. If you'd like, I could copy the map over here so we can see what you want to do might look like.
What's the size of the cone you're looking for - 30?

I'm currently interested in movement and simple reach rules for my thorn whip cantrip that has 30 feet range.
Now My PC (green p) could obviously move to and reach with cantrip A and B
I've seen DMs who would allow reaching W, but I find it wrong
So the question is only about reaching C and D. i.e. are creatures C and D within 30 feet of creature p ? in this picture.
By the way, some math here - creature D is SQRT(25*25+15*15)=29.15 feet from p if me measure the direct line between two creatures. So both mathematically and based on DMG 252 D is within 30 feet. I just want to double check if DM is

Ahhhh, gotcha. Well then, let's put it to a vote to see how everyone feels.
Would it be preferred to stick to the RAW diagonals (5-10-5-10) OR should we go with each square being 5 ft no matter what? I've been moving my units on the basis of the RAW.

I abstain.
I have played all 4 options (the 4th one is using actual ruler) and believe all have their drawbacks.
I only want the decision to be made.

I'm really sorry, but I have made the decision to leave this game.I'm ready stay in the game until end of the current combat to prevent breaking combat balance (unless it will take another 2 weeks to finish second battle round).
[ +- ] Some of my excuses
Please, this is problem of my expectations, not the players or DM's problem. The game story and NPCs are brilliant and I would love to to play this game either online on IRL, but I've recently made a decision to leave PBP games I fail to feel engaged in. I've realised I'm addicted to be able to participate the DnD game story on regular basis. For variety of reasons (some being my own role-play choices and PC personality I have failed to involve my PC to my satisfaction and now we have the last 2 weeks with a single round of a combat encounter processed.. I'm burning out waiting for my PC next turn.

I was just about to come in and post an update, but if you feel the need to leave, I'm not going to keep you back. I can just AI Prusx and send them their own way after the battle.
The update, on the other hand, is that I'll probably be unable to post until Friday. Work has kept be very busy, so I haven't had a good time to check any forums or threads.
To be safe though, if anyone else would like to bow out, you may.

I'm still here, but I'm hoping for a little more consistent game pase - or a heads up when real life makes gaming inconvenient, so we know what to expect.
Jun 20, 2022 1:16 am
Okay, so here's the deal: I've decided to put this game on the back burner for a bit. It's not a matter of interest, it's more that I can feel myself burning out, not just from PBP, but other things in general. Plus, with one player dropping out and another that just fell off the world at some point, I know I'll need to grab some more people later on when I come back to the game. The mind can be pretty fickle with the small things.
I don't know how long I'll have the game in stasis - could be until the end of July, could be longer. What I do know is that I feel the want/need to rework stuff for my world, maybe even getting more set up for this game that I already have available. I'll definitely be setting up a discord server to serve as a "nexus" between all my games when I come back, that way I can find it easier to give updates for events, among other things.
I'll end off this post with a thanks to everyone still playing - thanks for sticking around, thanks for being understanding, and most importantly, thanks for playing.
If you feel like you might want to continue playing: please leave a message here. I'd imagine that with the game going quiet for a bit, everyone might wish to back out to keep your games list clean and without clutter. If you leave a message that you'd still might be interested in playing at a later point, I'll send out PMs to double-check and re-invite. We'd start just after the current battle with a recap and new goal.
Thanks again everyone. Happy gaming <3

I'm interested in continuing but I need to be sure you're able to continue the game at a regular pace if you do choose to start it again in the future. If not, that's OK. I just want to set realistic expectations.
