"No, no I have not," Father Braeburn replies, perplexed. "I am not versed in magicks such as this. It would almost appear that an arcane spell was miscast."
Talyn does not notice anyone acting out of the norm, neither does his familiar. His thoughts would concur with the father's suggestion however.

Lief, under the eyes of Old Peculiar, pulls out the parcel from under the bed gingerly. The aura coming off of it is quite potent, and wreathed in black. As he carefully peels away the wrapping, an athame made of jet black obsidian lies inside. An onyx is set on both sides of the guard and at the pommel. The edges of the blade are jagged and vile looking. Lief feels that to touch the item directly might not be the best for his health.

This is indeed a grim artefact. A dagger for evil deeds. Left by mistake, or another vessel of darkness left for an unknowing civilian to find?

From his pack, he takes out a purple piece of silk. The colour is not consistent throughout the piece of fabric. Silke is a good insulator for such magical artifact. I buy the pieces where the dye process failed for cheep. He gives the Old Peculiar a grin.
Its a good thing that I found this and not some girl cleaning the room
OOC:
Oh boy, he is full of himself - He is going to be so much fun to play :D
With the obsidian athame securely packed away, he continues to search for more items left behind. To the Old Peculiar he asks if the stranger spend time anywhere else, in other places, he could have left demonic boobytraps?

"No," Peculiar replied, "he only stayed in the common room for a bit to eat and drink, and then came up here. Unless he stole out into the night while all was quiet, which it seems the eel did.

Taking another 10 minutes or so, Leif finds little else of interest in the room. Peculiar suggests that maybe he take a small break at the bar with some free food and drink as the smallest of thanks compared to all that could be given.

Leif finds the others. I searched the stranger's room. Under the bed, I found this nasty looking dagger. Another trap left for some innocent victims to find.
No! Don't touch it!
This is a truly sinister weapon, most likely used for dark and twisted rituals.

What do you guys have?

"A wicked blade definitely not to be touched barehanded," Talyn said. "We've healed the wounded but some are exhibiting the mannerisms of the animals that bit them. So far it's only bite victims, not other wounds. I believe the transfer is the effect of the miscasting of the initial spell. The boy may have said the words but he's no wizard. He thankfully most likely got a few syllables wrong and an intonation or two off key. I shudder to think what the full power of the spell was... but I can guess. The bite was to transfer the undeath but instead it transferred the typical behaviour of the animated animals."

How could a spell be miscast, magic is not cooking - if you miss something if fails. None is telling the truth in this place! Prusx is impassioned and don't take an effort to hide it.
She cries And I. I failed to find tracks of mysterious figure leaving the city. He will want to redeem this artifact. I would try to make an ambush in his room. Anyone with me?
She will try to arrange sleeping either in that room or just next to it and set up some goblin-style traps in the room. Magical traps wouldn't work against wizard, but spilling Ball Bearings (which Prusx has right now) on the floor and stuff like that would work - Prusx believe so.
OOC:
I know my PC conclusions and assumptions/forecast are most probably wrong, but she goblin and not high INT. Though I believe I've came up with very reasonable story for my PC to suspect every human... :)

"Complex arcane magic is exactly like cooking, Prusx. The difference between a fireball and a snow sphere is varied emphasis on a single syllable... and a different material component but still... It is very possible to botch magic and still have some effect occur. If magic were all or nothing, there would be far more practitioners in the world. Since a single spell can produce several disastrous effects if done incorrectly, there are far fewer practitioners. It helps thin the ranks."

The dusk elf considered the druid's plan and added, "I think the robed man left the blade to be found and spread corruption, just like the spell book page. I doubt he'll be coming back for it. I think we should try to search around the village for other cursed items he may have left. Our familiars and animal friends can certainly help speed that up."

Oh yes, you don't want me cast healing magic on you next time... if I am not careful I will turn you into a frog instead.
Prusx laughs at her own joke. When she stops laughing you hear hat in here voice as she says:
Tell me this: where is he now? If he had a book full of those pages, then this is but a beginning. I don't care for one more item or this village. I care to stop the man. Even human sometimes learn from mistakes. This far it was just lucky coincidence that his plan has failed, whatever the plan was
Prusx slowly calm down and is soon ready to help city search she cast

And spend an hour to search the city while concentrating on detect magic spell.

"I would need time to prepare. but I could seek guidance from my deity in the morning." G'nark offers.

OOC:
Okay, we got Prusx searching the village towards the evening light. What is everyone else doing? Searching, resting? Prepping any traps?

'Fly invisibly along the roads and trails in and around the village and continue to seek anything out of the ordinary, Morden, but don't approach or touch anything. Let me know and I'll advise you,' Talyn thought to his familiar.

He sighed as he watched the druid go but there was nothing he could do to change her mind.

"The robed man left the ceremonial dagger and dropped the parchment. If he planned to see the priest, perhaps he left something in or near the church. I know it will take you from these injured people, Father Braeburn, but I think we should check with urgency. What do you think, Leif?"

If the priest agreed, Talyn would head off with him to the church.
Apr 19, 2022 12:48 am
Father Braeburn scratched his chin thoughtfully. He nodded, agreeing that it would be wise to check, for he had not yet been back since the early hours. After double checking the more injured folk, he accompanies Talyn and leads him to the church once he was ready.
Apr 19, 2022 12:54 am
Talyn carefully looked around the outside of the church first, and asked the priest if he saw anything out of place.

Talyn examines the perimeter of the church, looking stone by stone. Unfortunately, neither he nor the priest are able to glean anything of use. It seems nothing was left on the doorstep either.
However, the thick wooden door does seem to be open a bit.
Apr 19, 2022 2:39 am
"If you didn't leave it like that, stay behind me, Father Braeburn."

Talyn extended his arm, his fingers mimed grasping and pulling the door open.

"Rah faer."

A spectral hand appeared and opened the door slowly as Talyn kept a safe distance and looked within with his darkness-sensitive eyes.
OOC:
Can't perceive anything today. :P

As the door creaks open, something moves inside! The interior is currently not lit well, as the only light illuminating the church are the dying rays of a setting evening sun through the windows. Father Braeburn does not see anything move inside, but Talyn only just saw a small pair of blurs in the corner of his vision.
A few pews are crooked and pushed aside towards the door, almost as if they were supposed to be barricades. As the two step inside, a shrill scream emits from the back corner as what sounds like a little girl began to cry in panic. The voice of a young boy tries to calm her, he can see Talyn's silhouette in the doorway and understands that they are not about to attacked by undead farm animals.

"C'mon, Tessie, stop crying! It's not the sheep!"
Apr 19, 2022 3:57 am
Relieved it wasn't a necromancer, Talyn sighed deeply.

"It's alright. The bad animals are gone. Please, come out. Father Braeburn is here. Father?"
Apr 19, 2022 4:19 am
The two children perk up and run over to the good Father as he enters behind. He pats both of their hands, offering them the comfort that both their parents were still fine and at the tavern if they wanted to run along there. They take no longer than a second to scamper out and down the lane.

"Tessie and Alvin, good, smart children," he mutters, watching them to ensure they are away and safe. "We could check my private quarters and study to see if anything was left there, if you wish."
Apr 19, 2022 4:36 am
Talyn nodded, repeating the mage hand and spot check before entering the rooms.

As Father Braeburn shows Talyn to his quarters and study, the door seems to have been locked, just as the priest left it when he left.
The inside of the room is quaint and moderate in size for the size of the church. An old bookshelf stands directly in front of the entrance, with a bed on the left, and writing desk on the right. Many books line the thick, sturdy shelves. Many are books on the history of nations, various deities, bestiaries, and lo, comedy? Why, there's even a book entitled "Humans & Households: Second edition."
After searching for a few minutes, neither find anything out of the ordinary. Though, both feel something... Strange. Neither Talyn or Braeburn can put a finger to it.
