Start of Act 2

Morgo happily leads the group out of the Jolly Lager and across the settlement to what appeared to be - by far - the largest yurt in Syrinlya. As the group approaches, the pungent scent of incense begins to fill the air, and it only becomes more oppressive once the door is opened into a large circular room.

The room is dim, lit by a burning brass brazier set in the center of the floor, and the luminescent glow of arcane runes painted along the walls. Around the room are a few push chairs, a bed, and a large stone chest - and in the back wall is a cloth door leading to a back room. It's a home - which is surprising, since a place this large seemed more suited for a storefront (particularly when looking for a person called The Buyer).

Morgo Delwur
"It's off-hours," Morgo says as some kind of explanation, shrugging a bit as she confidently leads them toward the back.

As the adventurers head through the rather homey entryway and through the cloth door toward the back, they find themselves in an even larger circular area - larger, even, than the dimensions of the yurt would seem to be able to accommodate. Rather than a typical storefront, however, the layout is almost like a large warehouse - the items stored in large crates, stacked high to the ceiling, rather than displayed like one would expect out of a normal shop.

The incense smell now suffuses the room, a rather heady mix of opium, lotus flower, and musk, and the deep teal glow of magic light paints everything in blues, greens and dark shadows.

The Buyer
Toward the center of the warehouse is a desk, at which a high elf of indeterminant gender sits, sorting through numerous stacks of paperwork, and occasionally taking notes in a large leather-back ledger. A tiny green dragon - about the size of a house cat - with luminous green butterfly wings lays curled up among the paper stacks.

"Ah, I see you've finally made it. And only slightly inebriated." says the Buyer, without looking up from their writing - something about their tone seemed to make it sound like they hadn't expected even that much out of the group. The small dragon blinks awake and looks up at the adventurers curiously. "Your supplies have been prepared. Is your plan to head out this day, or do you require respite from your voyage?"

With a name like The Buyer, Teo wonders if they ever actually sell any of this product or if they are more aptly named The Hoarder. Granted, it's easy to be critical of the wealthy when you have little need for material wealth, and Teo doesn't know this person's whole story.

Teo stands just behind the Captain as they enter the large yurt, and waits for the Captain to address the Buyer.
Feb 21, 2022 3:44 am
"I like your friend," Byron says, gesturing to the small green dragon. "Always nice to see family."

She feigns seriousness for a second but then snorts at her own joke, sending a puff of black smoke roiling in the magic light.
Feb 21, 2022 3:48 am
"Wot's all this then?" Bonepipe gestures at the stacks.

The Buyer
The Buyer finally stops writing and looks up from their ledger, green eyes flat and unamused. The tiny green faerie dragon stands and stretches, before nimbly hopping onto the Buyer's shoulder and curling around the back of their neck.

They ignore Byron's joke completely, and gesture vaguely towards the stacks of crates. "Materials, supplies, artifacts... My interests are broad." They respond to Bonepipe equally vaguely. "But, that is not our business today."

The Buyer mutters something in elvish and the ledger in front of them magically flips back several pages. "The supplies the Diarchy requested for this expedition are as follows: four sets of cold-weather outfits, snowshoes, and crampons, two large insulated tents, several fur and wool blankets, 4 sets of basic artic exploration gear, and 40 days worth of rations."

The Buyer pauses, then looks at the group, their tone somewhat reticent. "Any additional supplies you may need, may also be provided. I've been told I'll be reimbursed for anything you may require." They do not appear to be entirely convinced of that. "The Diarchy is very anxious for a cure."
Feb 21, 2022 9:46 am
"Maybe a keg o' brandy for the cold eh?" Bonepipe grins.
Feb 23, 2022 5:37 am
Mance's eyes grow wide at seeing how large the collection of The Buyer has increased since he last visited Syrinlya. He greets elf with calm and respect, knowing the elf is not a fan of flourishes and grandeur in social interactions. Hearing what supplies they already have waiting for them is a relief. Mance is relatively used to cold weather, but the sea actually does a decent job at buffering against the cold. The frigid conditions across the Eiselcross landscape are another world, at least from what he's heard.

Mance smiles at Bonepipe's request hoping The Buyer doesn't have akeg knowing they could use their carrying capacity for more useful things than more alcohol, although a flask or two might be nice to get through the cold nights ahead of them.

Mance steps forward and asks, "What about the artifacts that you've collected? Would any of them help a small group of travelers cross the island? Also, would we be able to borrow some cold-hardy guide/companion animals that can help us carry the supplies? I have a feeling we're going to need all the energy we can reserve."

The Buyer
The Buyer looks at Bonepipe and states flatly. "I doubt the Diarchy will count that as a 'necessary expense'." Before turning their attention to Mance.

"It depends on what you're looking to accomplish with them, Pyro - but the artifacts I keep are one of a kind. I don't hand them out lightly." They say simply. "I do have mounts available for rent - reindeer. Though you will need to show me you have the competency to ride them before I can give them to you in good conscience. I can bring you to the stables now, if you would like."
OOC:
What will you do?
To clarify - it looks like the group is settling on travelling by land rather than sea, correct? Also, would the idea be to head out today (afternoon) or tomorrow (morning)?
Feb 24, 2022 6:49 am
Hearing The Buyer mention reindeer, Mance looks over to Teo hoping that they have the necessary expertise and kinship to gain the group access to the animals for their journey.

Regarding the artifacts, Mance tries to placate The Buyer by emphasizing, "Of course, of course, I would only want to borrow them for the humanitarian mission at hand with the hope to return them upon our success and only if you think they would increase our chances of success."

Mance looks around the large space of boxes not immediately finding what he had in mind. Eventually he leans towards The Buyer and suggests quietly to convey discretion, "For instance, I've heard of shields of unmelting ice. Heard they might even float atop ... the Inferno! Are these just delusions and tall tales made up by tired and lonesome explorers struggling across the tundra of Eiselcross or do you know about what I refer?"
OOC:
Based on what we've heard so far, land seems like the best approach, but Mance is still gathering intel. If he learns more about traveling the Inferno or if he learns about a coastal landing site closer to the station Mance might consider that. But based on the map, we'll need to at least travel by land for some portion of the trip, so he's keen to get these supplies and is interested in the reindeer. In terms of timing, I'm not sure, what does everyone else think?

The Buyer
The Buyer's eyes narrow. "Interesting. You're the second person today to mention something of that sort to me."

The Buyer closes their ledger, then stands, the faerie dragon curling around their shoulders. "An ancient magic thrives in the ice of Eiselcross - it's presumed that long ago this area may have had a connection to the Plane of Ice, just as the River Inferno is said to have it's origins in the Plane of Magma. It... is possible that there is ice that will not melt in the lava flow of the river, however, such magic is highly dangerous. In fact, the Woe is said to be a corruption of this very magic."

The Buyer regards the party solemnly. "Still interested?"
OOC:

Feb 24, 2022 11:47 am
"Highly dangerous? That's the way we like it innit?"
Feb 25, 2022 6:34 am
Mance looks wary but says, "Well, let's hear the details. Perhaps we'll try to avoid using it, but it might be worth having as many tools available to us as possible if things do not go smoothly. If we have our backs against the wall out there, we may need to take more risks. Also, who else is interesting in this today? If it's that dangerous and potentially spreads the Woe, shouldn't they be stopped."

The Buyer
The Buyer does not seem entirely impressed by Bonepipe's thrill for danger, but seems to listen to Mance's request for more information, walking elegantly toward one of the storage crates toward the back of the warehouse-like room.

"The one who inquired was named Avanka. An... unusually aggressive elder." They say. "I've not produced any artifacts for her - so there's no need for alarm. There are restrictions to this sort of thing, after all. Speaking of - you were given a Diarchy crest for proof of delivery, yes?"

The Buyer summons up a magic teal-green hand, and magically unseals one of the crates, before pulling out what appears to be a ring with a glowing ice-blue gemstone, etched in runes, contained inside a glass container.

"The gem this ring has - True Ice - is a relic only recently found in Eiselcross. It's what the Colbalt Station is researching, and, indeed, has the potential to turn into the malady we call the Frigid Woe. In this form, however, it's decently stable." They open the container and shake the ring out onto their hand, which lands harmlessly. "Those attuned to this item can use it to encase something in ice that does not melt under normal means - though it can be broken. And it's the breaking that puts the user in danger." They hold up the ring in their slender fingers. "If the ice is broken and gets into a living creature's body through a wound or by swallowing a piece of it, the crystal begins working its magic from the inside out. That ice then can also break off and infect others, which is how the disease 'spreads'. The cure you're after, which the Colbalt Soul created, is the only thing known to be able to melt true ice." They pause, looking at the group, "You see how this is not an artifact to use lightly?"
Feb 25, 2022 7:19 pm
Byron is impressed, but perturbed.

"It seems we understand the Frigid Woe pretty well, then. Strange that the cure is not so easily devised. Why wouldn’t the Cobalt Soul’s researchers pass it along if they’re sending word from the front?"

Always the skeptic, a note of indignation creeps into her voice.
Feb 26, 2022 8:23 am
Mance is intrigued by Byron's questions and so waits to hear the answer.

He then returns to the subject of the mysterious ring by asking, "How does one become attuned with this ring?"

The Buyer
"Understanding the problem does not mean there is a simple solution. Setting aside politics - which is always a factor - the cure for the Woe is challenging to produce. And, from what I understand, impossible to store for more than a fortnight." The Buyer explains to Byron. "It's not been an especially pressing issue before now. True Ice has only ever been found in the center of Eiselcross, where very few have ventured. The only instance of an epidemic like this before was at the Cobalt Station itself - which is what spurred on the need for a cure."

At Mance's question, the Buyer replies: "Time and focus. Wearing the ring overnight works in most cases, but it does require a certain level of spiritual understanding. You'll know it when it happens."

"Ah. Politics alone might’ve been a sufficient answer," she chuckles. "A lot of people want to pretend politics are a non-factor in things like these, but, well, look at me."

She indicates her scales, her snout, her teeth, her claws, her distinctive lack of tail, and holds her arm out in a sweeping gesture as if to indicate all of Exandria’s history.

"Anyway, I guess even with what you can provide we’ve got our work cut out for us." She turns to the others. "Maybe we ought to retire for the night? Coldest part of a day."
Feb 28, 2022 4:25 am
"Bollocks to that! Let'splay a few sets! Then down a few pints. Then bed a few bodies! Ha!"
Feb 28, 2022 6:54 am
Mance accepts the ring and says, "I will keep it as safe as I can and return it once this whole crisis is averted."

He inspects the ring curiously, turning it over between his fingers and holding it up to them light to see the True Ice sparkle. Then, after a look around at his companions, he slips it onto the index finger of his left hand. He feels a chill run up his arm and down his spine, although he wonders if he just imagined it. Flexing his hand a few times, he takes a deep breath that turns into a yawn. He concludes, "It's all good so far I think, but I definitely think a good night of rest is in order for me as well."

"Bonepipe, you're of course welcome to explore the night life as always, as long as you're fresh and ready to rock in the morning. I think we should get moving at first light, once Teo has had a chance to befriend the reindeer. The only question I'm still wondering is whether we go by land the whole way, or if we should take the Symphony as close as we can. What is everyone's thoughts?"
Feb 28, 2022 7:15 am
OOC:
Also, Mance might be convinced to try True Ice proofing the hull of the Symphony and sailing along the Inferno, but that sounds like it could be quite risky with the possibility of ending up like the Flying Remorhaz. @Data, does Mance have any concept of whether this would save time based on the map? If it doesn't really save much time, I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

@akorn, did Byron share that she thinks Urgon was from the Flying Remorhaz? If we decide to travel the Inferno it might be good to get more intel from them if we can. Maybe we even ask them to join us as guides 😱

Before handing over the ring, the Buyer makes a note of it's transfer in their ledger, and requests that Mance use the crest of the Diarchy to stamp a seal of acceptance of the artifact, along with the rest of the supplies.

"If you want mounts, you'll want to see to them first." The Buyer says, their eyes going to Teo as they seem to be the reindeer expert of the group. "Then, for tonight, there is an unoccupied yurt in the north quarter that should accommodate all of you, no need to stay on your ship or in the inn for the night."

Morgo, from the back, pipes up incredulously, "You're going to pawn off Bertron's yurt?"

The Buyer doesn't blink at the outburst, "I can't see how he would be using it. Resources are far too scarce to waste needlessly. Steaking of which,"

The Buyer pulls out a rolled map of the area, as well as a smooth, rune-covered stone. "This is covered as part of your temporary supplies. A simple map of what we know of this region, and a sending stone."

[ +- ] Eisecross Map - Path Options
OOC:
It would be shorter to go through the river, but possibly more dangerous. I've color-coded the potential paths available (that make sense).

Before now: you began your journey from Nohme on the morning of Day 1.
Normally you would have reached Syrinlya by the morning of Day 2, but investigating the Flying Remorhaz caused you about half a day, so you arrived in Syrinlya the afternoon of Day 2. If you spend the night, you will be setting out the morning of Day 3.

With that starting point in mind:

The Green Path (through the Mountains) is the trail that the previous adventuring party took. Each circle represents a Make Camp location when going at a fast pace (with mounts). You can modify these times and locations by going slower or travelling longer. Using this path you will reach Cobalt Station the evening of Day 5.

The Red Path (going around the Mountains) this is a slightly longer, but presumably safer path. Each circle represents a Make Camp location when going at a fast pace (with mounts). You can modify these times and locations by going slower or travelling longer. Using this path you will reach Cobalt Station the morning of Day 6.

The Blue Path (going through the River Inferno) this is actually the shortest, but most dangerous route. Each circle represents a Make Camp location when going at a fast pace (on a ship). You can modify these times and locations by going slower, but it already assumes the ship will be travelling all day and night, so you can't travel longer. Using this path you will reach Cobalt Station the morning of Day 5.

The Purple Path (going around the east coast) this is another possible water-route. So far you have no information about this route. Each circle represents a Make Camp location when going at a fast pace (on a ship). You can modify these times and locations by going slower, but it already assumes the ship will be travelling all day and night, so you can't travel longer. Using this path you will reach Cobalt Station the evening of Day 5.

Teo is happy to go any route, but will push for any of the shorter routes (so not the red one), and is happy to help with the reindeer, so extra points for green. Of course as a player though, it's hard to say no to traveling through a river of lava, so...

No problem, best wishes to your Mom. I'm still thinking about Mance's opinion on the route and I'm not sure I'll get it written up tonight, but sounds like waiting until tomorrow should be okay.

I like the inferno route, especially since we've found the way to do it with the ring, but I feel like the Symphony has been in the spot light already, so I'm definitely open to giving Teo a chance to shine with the Reindeer.

Another thought I had if we go by land using the Reindeer is to send Helga and the Symphony with a sending stone by the purple route to wait at the coast, so we have a couple escape routes: Back over land the way we came, to the coast where the Symphony will be waiting, or we can use the ring to make lava-rafts and go down river as a last resort.

I admire the elegance of that, haha, and despite being hotheaded and somewhat impulsive I think Byron would too. Having multiple backup plans is the option that’s safest for the collective crew of the ship, which is important to her, without ruling out adventure.

And of course I hope everyone is doing or feeling okay! Take time as needed!

Okay, then we're going the Green Path, with Helga taking the Symphony on the Purple Path, so you all have multiple escape routes at the end. Sounds good to me!
After some discussion, the party seems to come to a sort of agreement on their path forward. Once potential snag ends up being convincing the Buyer to give up their other Sending Stone. "They come in pairs, and I'm afraid I haven't any more. If you take both, one for this Helga and one for your group on land, then you will not have any way of contacting me during the trip. And, I'm rather loathe to lose another set of Sending Stones - do you know how rare these are?"
OOC:
To get both Stones you'll need a successful Parley move. Think of what you might offer the Buyer in reassurances.
As they speak, the Buyer is also headed to the front of the yurt. "I'll take you to the stables. As I said, it's best to get things settled now. For those of you headed to bed early, you can follow Morgo." They gesture to the dwarf, who rolls her eyes and shrugs her shoulders in acceptance.

"Is there any reason we'll need to be in contact with you while we're out there ... other than for you to keep tabs on your ... artifacts?" Mance shares a cheeky smile with The Buyer as he produces the Crest of the Diarchy to stamp the necessary documents.

"If not, then I think it would be best if we were to borrow both signal stones ... for the sake of the humanitarian crisis."

He manipulates the Crest in a slight of hand with a special flourish to emphasize the authority behind their support and his face turns more serious.

"My hometown is turning to a collection of frozen statues ... I saw it with my own eyes! How long before it spreads to the whole continent! I'm sure you can understand that we need ALL resources available! And of course, we will do everything in our power to return these special items as soon as this is all over, you have my WORD!"

He pauses for a moment assessing The Buyer before adding, "But if you need more assurance than that, then you can have my sword." He unties the sword, decorative scabbard and all, from his worn leather belt and holds it out. "It's a special dueling rapier from the Menagerie Coast. It's very valuable and unique this far north and should make up most of the cost of the stones. But know that I'll be out there in the wilds without it trying to save the continent."

The Buyer seems to take Mance's measure for a moment or two, then sighs. "Keep your sword, Pyro. I'll take your word for what it is." They say, before handing Mance the other Sending Stone. "Do not make me regret it."

And with that said, the Buyer reaches for the pixie dragon on their shoulder - which flutters off to curl up on the bed in the front room - before the Buyer leads the way out of the yurt and into the town. The Buyer leads them to the far northern edge of the settlement, where some snow-covered pines overlooked several large cone-shaped buildings. The group can see, long before they arrive, a large herd of about two dozen or so reindeer mulling about the front of the stables.

"Reindeer are discerning mounts." The Buyer says once they arrive. "They won't carry just anyone - you will first need to prove yourselves worthy riders." They look to Teo, "Try approaching one."
OOC:
For Teo, you can talk with the reindeer and convince them to join your group. That will be a Parley move, but you can use WIS instead of CHA, since this is more of a "Animal Handling" thing.

Byron and Bonepipe can also try a Parley move with WIS, or you can try something else, if you'd like!

Let me know how you go about approaching a reindeer - and what your character might be looking for in a reindeer mount.

About halfway to the stables, Morgo waved to Mance to split off from the group and head to the abandoned yurt that had been offered to them. It's surprisingly large and well-made - fur-lined and expensive.

"Belonged to a fool rich elf named Bertron who came here looking for 'adventure'." Morgo explains with a sigh. "He found the inside of a saber-toothed tiger instead. Now there's a cautionary tale."

The sound of wind and the biting cold die down as they enter the yurt. A cold fire pit marks the center of the hide-covered floor. Though there's only one mattress, it's more than spacious enough for all of them to roll out their bedrolls for the night.

An open crate containing packaged rations and a few other items stands next to the door.
OOC:
Since you got here first Mance, you can take the bed!
You can use the Make Camp move to go to bed and roll the +WIS for the Ring of True Ice.

Teo smiles as he approaches the reindeer, crouching slightly to appear less threatening and being sure not to make any sudden movements. He pulls some colorful berries and patches of moss from his pack that he either already had to just made a quick flight to grab. He gently pats and scratches the head and neck of the nearest reindeer as he speaks to whoever amongst the herd decides to listen. He uses a quiet, calm voice as he explains who he is, what he is looking for, and what he needs from them, trying to reach inside himself to find that reindeer spirit he uses to transform and extend it to the herd, without actually transforming, as that might startle them.

She clears her throat gently, exhaling a bit of heat that curls into white smoke when it hits the air, then, at a loss for what to say, croaks "Hi…"

Glancing over at Teo, she searches her pockets for some gift to give the creature, but finds nothing but a bit of hard tack she hadn’t completely finished.

Byron offers it to the reindeer.

Mance tosses and turns in his sleep, strange dreams of fire and ice coming and going in fierce succession ...

... He sits alone by a campfire out on a frozen expanse ... Where he has gotten the wood from he could not remember until he focused on the coals ... an antler was the only discernable detail left in the burning heap ... he remembers the desperation of survival, sacrifice, feels the coldness of guilt ... no that's the bitter cold encroaching on the small sphere of heat generated by the fire ... he doesn't have much time left ... he tries to distract himself by enjoying the aesthetic of the Ring ... it sparkles as he holds it up in front of the campfire ... he senses something magical pulsing behind the refracted light of the gemstone ... suddenly it explodes into a shower of crystals ... pain of a million tiny slivers ... a massive weight pulls upon his arm ... his entire forearm is encased in a quickly growing shard of ice ... Mance panics and plunges his arm into the campfire ... No, it's not a campfire, it's a jet of red hot fire ... Byron is there, Thank the Gods! She's come to save him, her breath encompasses his arm ... NO! Too much, his entire body is engulfed ... a wall of fire ... a great wave of liquid fire ... magma ... he's on the Inferno, the river of fire ... he's surfing down the wave ... standing on his frozen arm as a board, it has snapped off his shoulder ... Bonepipe yells out an exclamation of joy! ... he's slalom skiing next to Mance, both legs frozen in shards of ice skimming along the surface of the lava ... suddenly the wave crashes down upon them ... searing pain ... but no burns ... gasping for breath, he tries to swim ... a whale encased in armadillo-like plates of ice breaches the magma under him ... it's Teorca! carrying him to the shore ... Mance lies exhausted on his back in the black volcanic sand ... lava recedes from around him ... he feels warm now ... he's clutching his frozen arm to his body ... no, it's not frozen any more ... and it's still attached ... a feeling of relief washes over him ... the Ring is still on his finger ... but now feels apart of him ...

... Mance wakes up with a sense of resolution, but feels even more exhausted than when he first fell asleep. It is still dark and the others have not returned yet. The fire is almost out, so he gets up to throw another bundle of logs onto the fire and then inspects the Ring of True Ice. It sparkles just like in the dream. He feels different now too. He can feel the ring's magic now, joined with him and knows he can channel it if he needs. Feeling exhausted, he tucks back into bed and quickly falls asleep again.

I'm back! Thank you all for your patience over these last 3 weeks. I've really been eager to get back to this. Due to the extended break, I'm going to write up a small summary of what has transpired so far, then move along to the next phase of the journey, so it's an easier hopping-off point.

If you have any questions, or need anything from me, please let me know!
RE-CAP

The Frigid Woe is known a rare, highly-contagious magic disease from the ancient and inhospitable islands of Eiselcross. The contagion begins with a strange stiffness in the limbs, that quickly progresses into rigid joints and a biting, bone-deep cold that won't subside. Eventually, those infected will slow to a stop, and their bodies will begin turning to ice, from the inside out.

It's a horrendous disease, but typically only experienced by explorers out deep in the uninhabited tundra -- that was, until 12 days ago. Contaminated goods found there way to the mainland of Wildemount on a ship known as The Flying Remorhaz. The town of Nohme - as well as some neighboring villages, like the one Teo hails from - have become infected, with the disease quickly spreading across the population.

The only known cure was developed by a remote research outpost in Eiselcross - Cobalt Station - but no one was able to get ahold of the researchers there. After 5 days of symptoms getting worse in town, an adventuring team was sent to Cobalt Station to retrieve the medicine directly, but contact with them was quickly lost.

The port of Nohme was shut down - travel in and out of the village to other parts of the Greying Wildlands was restricted until a cure could be recovered. It is then that a new group of adventurers is sent on this dangerous mission - the town's last hope of survival.

DAY 1

The crew of the Symphony of Ice and Fire sets off from the docks at Nohme Town, wished off by the town's Burgomaster, Sten Onmunson, who was visibly affected by the disease. The group's destination is Cobalt Station - a research outpost in Eiselcross, and the only known place to have developed a cure for the Frigid Woe. Along with a crest of the Diarchy, indicating the group's official standing as adventurers on this quest, Sten also directed the group to seek out The Buyer in Syrinlya - the closest settlement to the outpost - for additional supplies.

On the way to Syrinlya, the Symphony of Ice and Fire is accosted by a strange ice-covered leviathan. Mance notes that the ice protruding from the creature is connected to the Woe. After a great (and glorious) battle, the creature retreats, leaving the Symphony to its repairs and Teo & Bonepipe to quarantine on a small boat (THE RAFT OF CHAMPINS), as they continued on their journey.

As evening approaches, Teo spots a flock of birds fleeing from the direction of the island, the druid's Spirit Tongue allowing him to hear them shouting about a spreading 'corruption'. One bright red bird separates from the flock, and appears to lead the group back from where it came. Teo decides to transform into a falcon to follow the bird, and, deciding to honor the bonds they have with Teo, the rest of the group follows suit.

DAY 2 - PART 1

It takes the whole of the night to reach land, but by the time the sun rises they can see the icy tundra that is Eiselcross. The red bird they had followed lands on the mast of a wrecked ship - the Flying Remorhaz, which has crashed up against the remains of several more ice-covered leviathans. Teo, Bonepipe, and Byron row over to the wrecked ship on the RAFT OF CHAMPINS to search for survivors.

Unfortunately, there are no survivors of the Remorhaz - all falling either to the disease or the attacking creatures. Teo notes that this ship is the same one that sold the contaminated goods to his village. Byron is able to find the Ship's Log, which informs the group that the Remorhaz had found a way to sail up a trail of lava called the River Inferno on the island, and found a "goldmine of Aeorian treasures. Barely guarded - Urgon just slipped below the sheet, and the sages were none the wiser. Shields of unmelting ice on command - should fetch a pretty fortune, with or without Darktow."

Along with that discovery, the red bird relays to Teo a cryptic message, "Corruption. A dark mockery of nature. You must bring an end to it, or it will bring an end to us all." And Bonepipe axe-kicks through a frozen chest filled with strange blue vials, which freezes a good part of the wrecked ship upon shattering (and gets Bonepipe stabbed with a bit of that ice). The three of them row quickly back to the Symphony, barely making it back in time to avoid being swept up in the wake of the sinking Remorhaz (though they lost the RAFT OF CHAMPINS on the way).

Marking that a blizzard will be blowing in soon, Mance direct the ship back on course to Syrinlya, and the group makes it there a little after mid-day.

DAY 2 - PART 2

When the Symphony pulls into port (with a live performance) the group meets Morgo Delwur, who introduces herself as their guide. Though most of their adventurers (including the settlement's leader, Professor Gulrim Shalebrow) are out on an expedition, Morgo still happily leads the group to Syrinlya's main tavern - The Jolly Lager. Teo does a fly-around town and notes that the settlement is less worried about the Woe than they are about potential attacks from the Dwendalian Empire, since most of their adventurers set out on an expedition they have yet to return from. At the tavern, Byron and Bonepipe eye some suspicious characters - an elderly elf ranger named Ava, and a scarred dwarf named Urgon.

Bonepipe notes right away that 'Urgon' is the name noted in the Remorhaz' ship's log, and that the chest the dwarf is carrying is the same type that he axe-kicked previously. Byron meanwhile gets a good look at the somewhat belligerent elder elf and notes that she isn't what she seems (and appears to be using a Disguise ability). Bonepipe decides to goad Urgon into a drinking contest, which Ava participates in as well - Bonepipe comes out victorious, but the suspicious strangers leave without giving up much information.

The group then decides to finally seek out The Buyer. The elf provides them with some much-needed supplies, and information for their route to the Cobalt Station. Seeking out the answer to how the Flying Remorhaz could have possibly sailed across lava, Mance is informed by The Buyer about an un-meltable form of ice called True Ice, and is eventually entrusted with the magic item, the Ring of True Ice.

The group makes plans on how they will get to Cobalt Station, and decide that the four of them will take reindeer mounts through the Mountains, while the Symphony (lead by Helga) takes the eastern sea route, with both groups communicating with one another through the use of a pair of Sending Stones. The idea is for the four of them to get to the Station quickly, while having multiple ways to return with the medicine.

That settled - Teo, Bonepipe and Byron spend the rest of the day befriending reindeer mounts, while Mance calls it an early night to being attuning to the Ring of True Ice.

OOC:
So, I'm skipping ahead on the reindeer thing. I figured setting out might be more exciting to get back into, but the reindeer rolls may come into play over the course of the travel time. But basically:

Teo's diplomacy (Parley with Reindeer = 7) gets through to a few reindeer in the herd, but they seem somewhat skittish on the danger of the mission. Fortunately, Bonepipe (Parley with Reindeer = 8) proves there stuff when he approaches the biggest toughest looking reindeer and boldly invites him on the adventure. The lead reindeer takes this as a challenge, and charges at the barbarian, who is able to tank the creature's blow, grab it by the antlers and give him a good flip!

In the scuffle, the reindeer Byron approached (Parley with Reindeer = 5) scampers off (Byron gets to mark 1 XP, if you haven't already.), but the lead reindeer and several of the other reindeer under his command all seem impressed by the adventurers' ability. The lead reindeer informs Teo that he and the most fearless of reindeer will agree to accept the group as riders and take them across these lands.
DAY 3

The group wakes up to the howling wind outside. It seems the blizzard Mance predicted yesterday had blown in over the course of the night. Several inches of snow has to be pushed out from the entrance of their yurt, and still more is falling steadily from the sky.

Rough weather, but nothing unexpected for this climate. And the group didn't have the luxury of waiting for the weather to clear. They take breakfast, then stop by the Symphony to deliver the Sending Stone to Helga and direct the crew on where to wait for them on the east side of the island, and for how long.

After finishing up any unfinished business they have in town, the group heads back out to the stables on the edge of town, where Morgo is waiting for them - their reindeer, Aegni (for Bonepipe), Johvis (for Teo), Elrora (for Byron), and Druin (for Mance), all saddled and ready to go.

"Here to see you off! Stay warm!" The dwarf tells them, jovially, as they look out at the vast tundra of Eiselcross. Mountains rise in the distance -the imposing silhouette somewhat blurred by the swirling snow.

Welcome back, @Data! And I apologize for my own week-long absence, although I don't think anyone actually noticed. Yeah, outstanding recap! Looking forward to getting back to the adventure!
"Fine day for a run, innit," booms, Bonepipe. "Ho, Aegni! Ho, Johvis! Ho, Elrora! Ho, Druin!"

Mance is disappointed not to see Urgon and Ava in the morning. He was hoping to wrangle some more information out of them, but he suspects they are intentionally keeping their heads low, if they are even still in Syrinlya given that they are probably at least partially responsible for the outbreak of the Frigid Woe.

"Thank you Morgo for all your help. We look forward to celebrating in the Jolly Lager with you upon our return!"

Mounting Druin, Mance bundles himself against the cold. Double checking all their supplies are secured, he follows Bonepipe's enthusiastic lead, riding out into the blizzard towards the distance mountains.

Happy to have you back, Data! Excited to get back into this game and see where it goes!

I'm still trying to figure out how to bring up Teo's bonds and alignment in the narrative so that I can level up lol, but I apologize if this seems like an overstep.
Quote:
BYRA does not understand life in the wild, so I will teach them.

ALIGNMENT: Good: Help something or someone grow.
After successfully parleying with his new reindeer companion, Teo notices that Byron was still having a little bit of a hard time connecting with them and getting them to trust her completely, and is reminded of the time long ago when Byron came to his village to learn the ways of nature. Teo is saddened slightly that they never were able to make any headway, and sees an opportunity now.

He approaches gently and speaks to the reindeer, telling the beast that Byron can be trusted. He gives Byron some berries to feed to the reindeer, and shows her the spots on their head and neck to pet and stroke in order to keep them calm. After seeing them begin to understand and trust each other, Teo smiles and withdraws, letting them figure each other out on their own.
Teo smiles as Mance brings up the roles the group might be able to take as they travel, "I think as the one caable of shifting to avian forms, I think my role in this journey is obvious. I will scout ahead and let you know of anything on the horizon."

He turns to Johvis, "You might have gotten the best assignment. Stay with the rest of the herd, but I will mostly be flying ahead." he says as he scratches the reindeer's neck.

Yeah, I love it, Aqua! I love that it’s likely to affect my bond too—but I’ll have to think about specifically how going forward.
Byron can’t hide her gratefulness, but she chooses not to say anything just yet. Gotta keep up appearances. Nevertheless, she volunteers to assist Teo in scouting: the better for the party, and if she makes some headway on what she owes the elf then so be it.

In the meantime she strokes the reindeer absentmindedly as final preparations are made.
