Introduction

It's been a few years now since they took her. It's always the same. They come on a rainy day, just before dusk. Hooded figures wielding the power of fire. Are they even human? Who knows. The only thing we do know is that they demand a sacrifice. Last time, it was my sister Irina. I swore that day that I would find her and bring her back, no matter how long it takes.

But I was too young to head out. Only 14 years old myself. Far too small to take on such a quest. So I bided my time and honed my skills. Waited for the moment when I could leave Olfhaven and start my journey. That day was a fortnight ago now. I have been traveling towards a nearby settlement named Dawntower. I can see it in the distance. My feet hurt and I haven't slept well since I started, but it should be no more than 2 hours of walking now. I can take a few days to rest while I try to gather information. At least the weather is nice today...

Suddenly a man appears from behind some trees "Sir! Please, you have to help me!" He says.

Grund reaches for his axe. He is wary of strangers. "Help you with what exactly?" Grund replies. "My friends, they... they are still in the forest." The strangers says, still trying to catch his breath. Grund notices some blood stains on his cloak and a bow sticking out over his shoulder. "I had to leave them behind and run from that thing." He continues as he looks behind him, obviously afraid to be followed. "Or it would have gotten to me too."

Yes, Grund is traveling alone.
The look on the young man's face oozes despair. His plead to save a captured friend hits home within Grund's heart. If he expects others to help him find Irina, he will have to help others as well. "Very well, lead me to them and I will try to aid you. How good are you with that bow?" The man looks at him with tears in his eyes and wipes them away as he replies "I can hit a moving rabbit from 30 meters away." It's clear that he's used this line as a boast before, but right now he has not the conviction in his voice to support it.

The hunter's name is Marland Rikson.

Motive of the attacker: Inspect Language
A giant ape has captured the 2 friends of the hunter. It does not intend to harm them but finds their language amusing. It will find a quiet spot to play with them until it gets bored.
Marland leads Grund through the thicket to the place where he last saw his friends. "Did you see what attacked you?" Grund asks along the way. "I was knocked down and hit my head on a fallen tree. I blacked out for a few seconds and when I opened my eyes again I heard the distant screams of Roy and Sanja. I ran for help." Grund thinks about this for a bit. "We best look around where you last saw them and see if we can find any clues." He offers. "Yes. It's just past this creek." Marland agrees.

There seems to be no sign of either Roy or Sanja at the location. They take a few minutes to examine the area and try to find what attacked them and where they went.

Grund picks up a boot from in between some bushes. "Boy, I found something!" He shouts over at Marland who hurries over to him. "Please, call me Marland, friend." Grund nods "And I am Grund." "Well, Grund. I found something as well." Marland shows him a piece of redish-brown fur "I found this on a branch at about head height." Grund inspects it for a minute "This doesn't look like any animal I know, do you know what it could belong to?"

While Marland thinks about this Grund pulls the boot out from between the branches and present it to Marland "Is this familiar to you?" Marland takes a good look. The boot is ripped almost in half and had a dark red spot near the toes. "That looks like one of Roy's boots" Grund turns it sideways and makes an unsettling discovery. A piece of flesh is hidden inside the tip of the boot. It looks like one or several toes were ripped off when the boot came off.

"I can't abandon my friends!" Marland replies. "Look, Marland. I won't hold you back from going there, but trust me, to go there now is suicide. We're in unknown terrain, we don't have a track to follow and it'll be dark before we know it. We must turn back and get help. It's the best chance we've got!" Marland bows his head in defeat. They'll have to come back tomorrow and hope to find the trail. "I'm afraid you're right, Grund." he says with a sigh. "Fine, we'll head back. But I want to be out here again at first light and I need you to be here with me." Grund looks at him and puts a hand on Marland's shoulder "Yes, you can count on it."

Saddened and in silence they return to Dawntower. By now Grund has blisters on his feet from the long day of walking. Just when he thought he made it to Dawntower, he had to go the extra mile... or miles. "Do you have a place to stay?" Marland asks. "I'm afraid I do not, is there an inn I can rest at?" "There is, " replies Marland "But you are welcome to stay and rest in my hut. I have room for an extra person." Grund nobs and manages to smile through the pain in his feet "That would be most kind."
Mar 4, 2022 7:43 pm
Grund gets takes advantage of the fact that he was invited into Marland's home. He uses some hot water to soak his feet in and help them recover from the journey. After eating something together with Marland he lays down on a makeshift bed and it doesn't take long for him to fall asleep.

"Hey Grund, get up." Marland is at his bed, nudging him awake "Dawn is breaking. We need to get moving." He looks up and spots another person in the room. "This is Ogvald." Marland says "He knows these woods better than anyone in town and can lead us to Roy and Sanja." Ogvald nods in agreement. He's an older man with a grey beard and muscly forearms. If Grund had to guess, he'd say that Ogvald is a woodcutter. Marland looks like he only had about an hour of sleep tops. That would explain how he got Ogvald here so quickly. Grund thinks to himself.

"Marland showed me the fur you guys found. I'm pretty sure that's ape hair, and by the size of it, I'm thinking it's a big one." Ogvald says in a firm but worried tone. "From Marland's descriptions I believe I know a likely place to find it. Come on, let's get moving"

Grund hurriedly gets his things together and gets ready to head back into the forest.

When heading outside, they notice that the weather is very foggy this morning. It rained last night and the forest floor has become almost like a swamp. After a few hours of hardly any progress they decide to heat up by a makeshift fire. Because the wood is so wet from the rain, they have to use some of their supplies to get the fire going. Every hour that they lose it's becoming more unlikely that Roy will make it back alive. This is making Marland increasingly restless. "Come on, we're warm enough. Let's keep going!"

Sooner than Grund would have wanted, they put out the fire and start marching again. Every step agonizingly difficult through the thick mud. Eventually they arrive at the spot where Marland and Grund lost the trail the day before. "Hmm, yes. This place is familiar to me." Ogvald says. "Let's split up and try to find out which way to go. Marland looks up, still wincing. "I was looking for clues up in that tree when it startled me. A great ape with red-brown hair. About the size of 2 men! I lost my grip and fell." Grund inspects the wound as Ogval also arrives. "Hold still, let me see if I can help you."

"Ogvald, did you find a trail to follow?" He looks up at Ogvald who nods to him "Aye, I did. it's pointing south towards the pinewood forest." Grund thinks for a minute. "Right. Show me where to go, then take Marland and bring him back to Dawntower. He can't travel on his own strength anymore. I will keep going and find the ape. At least now we know he is still around" Ogvald gives Grund a worried glance "Are you sure about this, Grund? It could be extremely dangerous." Grund nods "I am. I made a vow and I intend to keep it. I will be back in Dawntower by nightfall."

Ogvald shows Grund which tracks to follow and wishes him the best. They then part ways, leaving Grund on his own.

Grund follows the trail that Ogvald showed him through the thick bushes and muddy forest floor. It's costing him a lot of effort to keep moving, but he's the only one able to find Roy and Sanja at this point. After a good hour's worth of trudging he comes across something he had been afraid of. In front of him, slumped over a fallen log is the body of a man. Grund's fear is realized when he notices this person is only wearing one shoe and where his toes should be, there is nothing more than a thick goop of dried blood. Oh no. It's Roy.

He tries to keep from retching as he searches the body for something to serve as evidence that he found him. After that he spends some time burying the body under a few logs. Something to keep scavenging animals from desecrating it. Unfortunately he has no time to do more. There is still a chance that Sanja is out there, in need of rescue. He must keep moving.

Grund finds himself stuck on the edge of a ravine. About 30 meters below him, a river flows amicably down stream. To his left he spots the ruins of an old guard tower. As he gets closer to it, walking along the edge, he notices that it has a draw bridge. Unfortunately, the mechanism is so old and rusty that there's no way to lower it by turning the wheel. The only way to do it would be by cutting whatever is holding the bridge in place and then giving it a good push.

Grund uses his axe to the best of his abilities to clear the dirt and moss from the old bridge, hopefully making it free enough to be able to push it over. He then gets a running start and pushes his shoulder hard against the old wood.

The hit against the bridge hurts his shoulder a bit more than he expected it to. The force from slamming his body against it dislodges his shoulder joint. Luckily for him, it pops right back in but that doesn't stop it from hurting like hell. He screams in pain, his vision getting blurry for a few seconds. Then with a mighty crash the bridge falls down and whips up a heap of dust as it settles against the ravine floor on the other side.

Still in pain, he cheers with his other arm. But the celebration is short lived when he hears the howl of a wolf somewhere behind him in the trees. The noise from the bridge (and his scream) woke up the creatures of the forest. Grund has just enough time to get to the other side of the bridge before he spots the danger back inside the ruins where he came from. 3 wolves stand there, they are staring at Grund, snarling and looking hungry.

After some time walking, Grund encounters another cliff ledge. This time there is no obvious way forward and he is left with 2 options. Keep walking along the edge to hind a way down, or use a rope to climb down. Just past this ledge he can see the pinewood forest. He's so close he can smell the scent of pine resin in the air.

His spirit lifted by his arrival, he's in a rush to get to Sanja and doesn't even really consider the first option. It would take way too long. He grabs a rope from his backpack and ties it to a sturdy rock, throws the other end down the ledge and starts to climb down. He crouches as he moves into the woods, sticking to the shadows and near the trunks and keeping an eye on the branches above him for any sign of the ape or Sanja. That's when he spots a figure sitting on the forest floor up ahead. It looks human. Please, gods, let Sanja be alive and well. If this is her, and she's able to move. He gets closer and whispers "Sanja?" She opens her eyes and turns to where the sound came from. When she opens her mouth Grund quickly adds "Don't shout. I'm here to rescue you. Can you walk?" Eventually she arrives next to him, he offers her a hand to get up and supports her body as she's not in great shape to be walking on her own. Then they slowly and silently walk back the way Grund entered the forest, only speaking when they are sure that they are out of the ape's earshot.

As soon as they reach the edge of the forest, Sanja starts to cry. Grund offers her his shoulder to cry on and tries to comfort her. "It's ok. You're safe now. Let's get you somewhere to rest a bit and get our strength back. Do you know any such place near here?" When they get back to Grund's rope, Sanja is able to figure out about where they are and says in a weak voice "A hunters cabin not too far to the east." "Will you be able to make it there?" Grund asks her. She nods "I believe so."

With the help of Grund acting as a crutch, they make it to the cabin unscathed. Grund gets a fire going and offers Sanja some of his rations and water. "Here, you must be hungry." She happily obliges.

"Listen, Sanja. I must make sure the ape doesn't follow us and I have an idea of how to do that." He takes off his cloak and hands it to her. "Take off your shirt and wear this cloak instead. I am going to make a sort of doll and place it where I found you. Hopefully the beast will be none the wiser." Sanja replies "Do you think that might work?" "I think it has a decent chance, but I need your shirt so the doll has your scent on it." Sanja obliges and changes her attire to hand Grund her shirt.

Sanja is surprisingly fast with her makeshift cane. The rations and water quickly got her back to good health and she seems to not have any other injuries. "Say, Sanja, how did you manage to not get hurt by that giant thing?" She gives a faint smile "Actually, the beast was quite gentle after she got back to her home. She took care of me like she would a baby. I guess she was lonely or something." Grund ponders this for a moment "Well then, I guess making her a doll was fitting." Sanja nods "I'm actually glad you didn't just outright try to kill her. I know some people in Dawntower would. What's your name anyway? And how did you find me?"

Grund realizes he hadn't even introduced himself. "Oh, right. I suppose I should have mentioned this earlier. I'm Grund Hanfeld. I happened to come across your friend Marland on my way into Dawntower." He explains the rest of the story and how his journey lead him to her. He also apologizes for not getting there faster.

They make good time heading back to Dawntower and arrive only a few hours later. It's late in the afternoon by now, luckily the weather is still okay. Cloudy and windy, but not raining. It's a happy reunion when Marland, who is now bandaged and limping, and Sanja see each other again. Happy until the time comes when Grund has to tell them about Roy. This sad news hits all of them hard. "I have covered his body with stones and trunks as best I could to keep animals from getting to it. I will go with you to collect it if you so desire." He tells Marland "That would be most kind, Grund. We know now where to find Roy and will make sure he gets home as well."

Marland moves closer to shake Grund's hand. "You have kept your promise and for that I am grateful. I am in your debt. Please, be welcome in my home for the next few days as you rest from your long journey. I hope that is a start of repaying you for rescuing Sanja." "We should hurry and go find Roy while we still have some daylight left." Grund tells the others. He's looking tired, but determined. "Are you sure you want to come with us, Grund?" Marland asks. "You have done so much already, please take some time to rest." But Grund knows he won't be able to rest until this is done. "No, I will join you. After spending some time walking, the party reaches a fork in the path where Grund is unsure which one to take. He racks his brain for the way forward, but it doesn't come to him. However, he gets a good idea. Grund finds a suitable tree and climbs it all the way to the top so he can see above the canapy. There, far off in the distance, he spots the tower of the ruins where he crossed the ravine. That's the way we have to go!.

On his way down, a branch cracks unexpectedly under his weight, and he tumbles a few meters to the cold forest mud. The scratches and bruises he sustained are quite quickly taken care of with a few well-placed bandages. The lasts ones he had on him.

With the direction in which to travel clear, they don't take much longer to find the spot where Grund buried Roy under a bunch of stones and logs.

So, Roy has risen from the dead to complete his destiny of paying a debt. <thinking>
His debt was to Sanja because she once saved his life. So Roy's resolve was so strong that his lifeless body got up and is headed to the giant ape to go save Sanja and pay his debt even after death. He doesn't know that Sanja is already saved.
Grund spots the logs and stones where he left Roy's body. "Over there!" He says as he rushes to the spot, only to find a horrible truth. Roy's body is no longer here. Somehow it's been taken from beneath the weights and moved to a different location. "But... How?!?" Grund can't fathom what might have happened. "There's no way wolves would be able to get rid of all these weights. I know I did the right thing." He's obviously distraught by all of this.

Luckily, Ogvald keeps his head cool. "Grund, don't beat yourself up. You did what you could with the time you had. Let's spread out and look for clues as to what happened here." Grund picks himself back up and nods to Ogvald. "You're right. No time to wallow in shame."

As they rummage through the rubble in search of clues, a heavy rock tumbles down and hits Ogvald's knee. He yells out in pain when it hits. "Are you alright, Ogvald?" Grund asks, helping him back onto his feet. "I don't know, that stone hit me pretty good." With Marland's leg hurt and now Ogvald's knee, it looks like speed will not be one of their strengths for this journey.

Grund grabs Marland's shoulder. "Marland. I don't know what happened to Roy's body, but we will find out together!" Marland nods "Thank you Grund. You have already been a great help getting Sanja back. I'm confident we can find Roy together."

Grund thinks it through for a moment. "The only thing I can think of is that the ape came back for Roy after getting tired of the doll we made of Sanja. We should head that way and see if we come across any signs along the way." The others agree with Grund's plan and they set off despite the current injuries.

Grund descends the rope as he did before, but just before he reaches the bottom the rope snaps halfway up and he falls down about 2 meters. Luckily for him, it's not far enough to really hurt himself, but now the other 2 won't be able to make it down this way. "Are you okay?" Marland asks from up at the top. "Yes... I think I'm alright. But it looks like you guys won't be able to get down. Now what?" Grund replies. There is a bit of silence before he hears Marland again. "I guess we'll have to find another way down there." He says to Grund.

This gives Grund an idea. "There is a cabin not too far south of this place. I passed it on my way back with Sanja. I believe the cliff gets less steep over there and you would be able to climb down without a rope." He yells up to the others. "I think I know which cabin you speak of!" Marland says. "I've spent a few nights there in the past. Very well, we will meet you there. Be careful!" And so they split up, hoping to meet again at the cabin.

Because it will take a while for them to reach the cabin, and he knows he's quite close to the Ape's lair, Grund decides to scout out the pinewood forest already to save some time. He sits up, as Marland offers him some water, and explains what happened in the woods a few moments ago.

"Did you see Roy's body there?" Marland asks him after hearing about what happened. "I'm afraid I did not. I don't think it was the ape that took him. But if it's not that... then who or what did?"

They spend some time warming up and trying to think of the next step while they wait for night to fall. "No point in heading out right now. It'll be dark soon. "Thank you, my friend. That'll do wonders for my stomach, I'm sure!" Grund replies as they start to skin and prepare the meal.

"There's something else I found while hunting." Marland says as they are working on breakfast. "I was tracking a deer. I had found hoof prints and dried blood along one of the paths, so I followed it. But what I found was very strange." Grund looks at him with a pensive expression. "Hmm? Go on." He says. "Well, I believe I found the spot where the deer had died. There was an imprint in the mud with even more blood, but the deer was no longer there. Not far from it, I found a footprint and one shoe-print."

Grund looks up in surprise. "Could it be? Do you think...?" He exclaims. "I... I don't know, Grund. Do you think it could be Roy?" Marland says. "Well... " Grund continues "We did find a single boot that belonged to him, a few days ago. But he was dead. I saw it with my own eyes! How could he be walking around?!?"

On the other side of the room, Ogvald clears his throat. "Dark magic." He quotes a line all Ironlanders are familiar with. "In the depths of the long-night, when all is wreathed in darkness, only fools venture beyond their homes." After this, the room falls silent for a while.

The day starts out nice, but soon a storm comes rolling in. The dry clothes they had are soon soaking wet in this heavy downpour. Then Marland spots something up ahead. "Hey, what's that?" he shouts above the noise of wind and rain.

As they get closer, it becomes clear, and confirms their worst thoughts. There, on a small island just off the coast of a lake, they see the body of Roy. "Guys, we found him!" Grund shouts with excitement in his voice. But that excitement quickly fades when they notice the surrounding area. It's filled with about two dozen woodland creatures. Deer, wolves, foxes and even some smaller things like rabbits and birds. All of them have dark red eyes that almost shine on them like lights through the rain. "This isn't working!" Ogvald shouts to Grund as they slash at the undead creatures attacking them. "If we don't think of something, we'll get overrun." He proclaims. "I have an idea. Watch my back." Grund replies over the sounds of snarls and clashing weapons.

Grund spots the biggest wolf in the pack. That must be the alpha. If I can scare him off, maybe the others will follow. He grabs his shield and starts to bang on it with the back of his axe, making loud noises at the same time. Doing this, he advances towards the big wolf.

This beast has obviously seen more dangerous fights when it was still alive. It hurls itself at Grund and sinks its teeth into the shield. The force of this bite is too great for the shield and it splinters under the pressure, lodging several large splinters into Grund's arm. "AAAAHH!" He cries out in pain as he sinks to his knees.

Across the battlefield, Marland gets off another shot, aiming at one of the bigger targets.

The arrow hits the great wolf that Grund is now tussling with. Grund is still hurting from the shield break, but notices the lapse in defense of the beast and decides to strike while it's distracted. "Take this!" He yells as he hacks with his axe.

On the other side of the animal army, Marland has found himself in some trouble of his own. As he tries to load another arrow onto his bow, something bites his hand. A squirrel has leapt from a tree onto his back and is scratching and biting at him, causing him to drop his bow. He grabs the critter and throws it to the ground, only to see that about 5 more of them are advancing on him. As cute and cudly as they normally look out in the wild, these ones look angry and nasty. Marland decides to make a run for it towards the others.

The wolf once again outsmarts Grund. As the axe swings towards it, it takes a bite out of Grund's left hand, chewing off a few fingers. Grund screams again and falls down to the ground.

"GRUND! NO!" Ogvald yells as he tries to fight his way towards Grund to help him.

Ogvald tries his hardest to get to his friend, his blade slicing foes as he himself gets maimed as well. "I'm coming, Grund!" He says as he puts one foot in front of the other.

Marland hears Grund's shout and sees the wolf tearing into his flesh. This is a lost battle. He thinks to himself. I need to get out before that giant wakes up too. He turns towards the forest, the squirrels still chasing him, and decides to make a run for it.
