Powered by the Sea

With the release of 7th Sea to backers, there is obviously an interest in playing a game.

However, I am extremely intimidated by the lore and the setting; there's so much that I know I won't get it even half right. With that being said, is there any interest in a game using the 7th Sea mechanics but a different setting altogether?

High fantasy, urban fantasy, sci-fi, space opera, magical girl, alternate timeline, etc. All are great sandboxes to play in, and I don't have to worry about all that pesky backstory that I know nothing about.

Thoughts?

Before you launch this, I can setup 7th Sea as a system without a character sheet.

Cool beans. This is just a brainstorming thread, anyway. Seeing if there is any interest.

there is a way around learning the lore and setting of the whole game world.. have the game take place only in one setting, like one city. then you only have to learn about one country and culture

I'd be down to explore the rules in a world of your creation.

Any preferences?

I like the setting and lore of 7th sea, but even I'm not using all of it. I'd prefer something more loyal to the setting as in no space or magical girl stuff.

if you're going to keep the same mechanics, old europe is close enough and enough people already know the history

also eldritch, have you had enough time with the book to feel more comfortable running a standard 7th sea game? with the setting and lore?

Yeah, honestly, I kinda wanna explore the setting more, which is why I don't think I went for this straight off. I haven't even read the whole rulebook yet, but even through just character generation the world seems digestible. At least in small chunks.

yeah, I feel the same way... like I said, just make the game take place in one sport and just learn about that one spot... or make us all pirates..

We can always start small and get bigger. And preferences on where to start? I'm thinking hte Glamour Isles. It's an island chain, so there's plenty of sailing to be done, and the fae! I've always been enamoured with them.

Thoughts?

I can go for that. what's the premise?

Ooh, what a nice coincidence! I was thinking of running an Avalonian this time. :)

I don't know, you tell me.What kind of game do you want to play? Think of this as the brainstorming thread.

Y'all let me know what you want to see/do, and I'll figure out how to make it work.

You're the local guide, gotcha! Even though it's being based in the Glamour Isles doesn't mean there can't be people from other lands. The queen is very welcoming of outlanders, from what I remember.

hmm.. if you want to involve the Fae... maybe we have to retrieve some magical item? maybe we need to curry favor or act as ambassadors? maybe some great doom will befall avalon and we need their wisdom to help us prevent it? of course, that kind of help always comes with a price...

So, are we back to using the 7th Sea setting?

That's getting a bit too specific. I'm looking for what kind of theme all y'all're looking for.

The core book posits the following "story modes" as the kind of stories 7th Sea is good at (pages 277–78):

• Adventure
• Conspiracy
• Espionage
• Hack-and-slash
• Horror
• Political
• Military

Since we're starting out small—and in the Glamour Isles—I would be wary of choosing espionage, since that usually involves being spies elsewhere, and horror, since the book says "Eisen" for horror. I know that the Glamour Isles can do horror, too, but I'm just not that good at horror stories in any case.

Once we get a story mode chosen we can drill down to more specifics.

my votes are for adventure or conspiracy

Yep. I hope that's OK with you. I know how you hate learning new systems and settings :p
