The people of Icewind Dale are hardy and have long stood against the perils of the North. The events that shook the region a hundred years ago are now a distant memory. But what was defeated was not destroyed. Now, as forces converge on Ten Towns, the people of the North face their greatest trial yet. To overcome these threats, adventurers must once again rise to challenge evil.

Legacy of the Crystal Shard

Prologue To Spring
The Icewind landscape hangs in balance now,
Transfixed by glare of blue from Auril's eye;
The nomads freeze within a stone tableau.

Air alters into glass and the whole sky
Grows brittle as a tilted scrimshaw bowl;
Cairn and valley stiffen row on row.

Each fallen flake is trapped by spell of steel,
Crimped like chwinga in the quartz atmosphere;
Repose of scultpure holds the Ten Towns still.

What coutermagic can undo the snare
Which has stopped the season in its tracks
And suspended all that might occur?

Locked in crystal caskets are the lakes,
Yet as we wonder what can come of ice
Undead legacies explore from all the rocks.
Sylvia Plath 🙄

Legacy of the Crystal Shard is a Sundering module from the 2013 5e rules playtesting. It's set in Icewind Dale before Rime of the Frostmaiden. There aren't spoilers for Rime of the Frostmaiden.

Characters start at level one, progressing to level five. I would imagine this mini-campaign will take between six months and a year.

This game will have two DMs (Ezz is joining me). This isn't a first-come-first-served thing, as I'll have to coordinate with Ezz for recruitment. We're aiming to start play on March 20th.

In game or by the GM? :)

I'll join in the unlikely event that you don't get enough players :)
I would make a cleric or a druid

I would also be interested in joining. I remember reading the crystal shards books around 20 years ago.. Is this adventure set 100 years later?

I would imagine you'll be near the top of the list. I owe you a game.

Yeah, roughly. It's set in 1485 DR, about four years before Rime.

A classic setting on 5th edition with two GMs? I'd love to play! I don't have much prior info on the setting, though. I can play anything at the moment, just examining my options but a spellcaster would be nice.

I'm new here but I'd like a shot at playing. 30 years experience in TTRPGs and 4 in 5e. I usually play a Dwarf Cleric. Domain depends on what sourcebooks are allowed.

Thanks for the consideration!

Okay. I understand why all the reasons I shouldn't say I'm interested in this game. But, holy guacamole, both Adam AND Ezz? It's going to be epic and who doesn't want to be a part of that?
Mar 10, 2022 2:16 pm
No, yeah, we should definitely temper expectations about how epic it might be 😋.

Consider this fine print about preconceived levels of epicocity

Too high ezzpectations might be adamaging to your enjoyment of the game

For sure, definitely interested in exploring the chilly northlands! I'm happy to step back for others with less games if the interest floods in.

If I can get in on another Adam run game I'd love to! I want to run a barbarian space ape! (...Or ya know... a regular human barbarian).

I would be interested. Probably run a fighter unless the party needed something else.
What rules for allowed content?

My only question for in-game issues is heavy violence against kids. Obviously bad stuff happens, but I am not a fan of graphic scenes about dead kids.

No, there would be nothing like that in this campaign. I think the tone will be something like: "What if the movie Fargo was a comic book, but with magic and swords and not as good?"

A little dark comedy, probably a lot of blood, but nothing to really make you wince uncomfortably.

In general any official Faerun race or class is fine. If there's a homebrew you'd like to try, the answer isn't no but we'd like to look at it first.

Sounds good! No homebrew. I just wanted to make sure before I got ideas that it wasn't going to be PHB only or something like that. I like orcs, so I'll probably play a half-orc (or maybe Volo's orc, if that fits the game). I've been mulling over running a fighter using the thrown weapon fighting style (the flavor seems fun), so if that's allowed (not entirely sure what Faerun races and classes are, but I assume it mostly would exclude stuff like Theros races, etc).
Mar 10, 2022 6:19 pm
Yeah, it pretty much means no Ravnica, Theros, etc, races. It would be pretty weird having a satyr, loxodon, and a simic hybrid wandering around Icewind Dale.

I think we could do an orc, but the orcs are pretty active as raiders in/near the Dale, so the city folk might have certain assumptions about your character. Then again, I'm playing a full goblin in your game, so maybe we could find some way to make it happen 😁

Orcs are the best!

I'll fill up a spot if you need it but somehow I doubt that'll become an issue

Thankfully, I don't experience anything near that in real life, so being looked at funny, etc is just flavor.
