Part 9: Plundering the Plunderers' Plunder

Jul 2, 2022 3:56 pm
The two magicians and the halfling stand in the dark listening to the sounds of the struggle before them. Luban's bow thangs, but there's only the clatter of a wayward arrow in response. Scuffling footsteps suggest the Trading Post's Man-at-Arms is on the move, and Maloria and Luban watch the man scuttles like a cornered animal, groping his way along the wall, seemingly in search of the broken wall leading to the earthen tunnel south.

Round 5 ends! Round 6 begins! Turn order is as follows:
-->1. Party: Gilly, Eltrezar , Maloria, Luban, Thurig, Ora, Spugnoir
2. Trading Post Man-at-Arms

Luban quickly fits an arrow to his bowstring and draws again. This time the missile hits its mark true, and Mal and the thief see the man grunt and keel over. The others hear the him give one last bloody gurgle of anguish before collapsing to the stone floor, just an arm's reach from the tunnel he sought refuge in.

"Well done Luban! Light the lamps everyone, we have to find the mage before he finds us!"

Mal looks around for Spugnoir in the dark before the others can bring fire. She moves cautiously toward the ladder that exits the crypts, checking every alcove as she goes...
Jul 2, 2022 9:49 pm
Moving 20' to the north, Mal sees Spugnoir standing at half crouch in the tunnel leading to where the ladder runs through the holow pillar and into the torture chamber above. His body language betrays his obvious blindness, yet he stands at the ready with dagger in hand.

"Dare I say I heard you correctly, Maloria," the Magic-User entreats. "The half-orc has suppressed our rogue wagon-bearer?"

Ora lights her lantern, before handing Eltrezar his torch!

"Quickly, quickly, now! Bring our friend along, too!" and then she whispers "Are you familiar with any counter magicks, Eltrezar? We may need them!"

Gilly grabs the floating dwarf by the foot and guides him down the tunnel towards the others! She pulls the magical cloak about her with her free hand, and waits to see the mute man come into the light.

"Is he dead?"

OOC:
Lighting a torch with a tinder box is a full round action with a 2-in-6 success rate.
Ora starts using her tinderbox in a attempt to start a fire large enough to reignite her torch but struggles to get even sparks.
OOC:
Gilly would be unable to see yet.

Does a lantern and oil offer better odds, as that’s what she has in her own inventory. The torch I intended to hand off in any case!

The completely trustworthy thief approaches the body slowly fading in his infravison, and kicks at it with his foot. "Dead, as he deserves. Now we'll have to deal with his employers when we return, they see to be in league with what's going on down here."

Hrmph! "I am afraid I have nothing of the sort, young one. If it does come true that he is against us, our best defense is spreading wide apart and coming in from all angles." Eltrezar gets to lighting his own lantern that Ora had returned.

OOC:
Hmm... I think that lanterns/torches/ are only different on how long each item burns for, but both would require the tinder box to get a flame going to light them.
The room remains dark. Occasionally small snapshots of the crypts around them are revealed by the tiny sparking of flints as the party tries to restore light in the burial crypts. To the north, Maloria sees Spugnoir struggling to get his own torch re-lit as well.
As the darkness is filled with the sounds of heavy breathing and the clacking of stones and steel being brought together, those waiting in the east/west wing suddenly see illumination appear at the peripherals of their vision. Initially the thought comes to mind that one among them has succeeded in getting a light source ignited, but the dancing light comes from the hallway the party just returned from. Cautious footsteps approach and a moment later a guard steps into view of the magicians and Gilly. Protected in chainmail and garbed all in black with gold eyes of fire embroidered upon tunic and cloak, the man looks directly at Eltrezar before shouting back over his shoulder, "Back 'ere in the burial crypts, Turk! Three of 'em! Two wearing naught but robes, and a halflin' girl in leathers! Halflin's carryin' a bow, and likely the one that done the Gnoll bitch in back there.". The man draws a longsword from his scabbard and prepares to advance on the group attending Thurig.

Well the good news is someone brought light, so you can put your tinderboxes away (don't say I never bring you gifts).

Round 6 ends with the death of the Trading Post Man-at-Arms. Rather than moving back to exploration time, a new trouble, in the form of being discovered by a guard patrolling the halls and investigating the sounds of battle carried through the dungeon, kicks us in to Round 7.

Turn order is as follows:

Im almost offended. A Halfling, in the dark, in a magical cloak... seen. This man is too powerful to be left alive! He must be the big bad!
Gilly does little more than growl as the man comes into view. She fishes for an arrow, and comes back with one of those nice ones they found upstairs in one of the creature’s nests. She fires at the man.
OOC:
Rolling bad all the time is so very tiresome… :D

Knowing that Maloria and Luban are still on the other side of the group, Ora finds herself as all that stands between the man with the sword and the more vulnerable members of the party.

And so she steps forward into the light, sword at the ready. She knows she’s quick, and she hopes that his longer sword and heavier armor might make his cruel blows harder to land in such tight quarters! She strikes out with her blade!
OOC:
Tiresome…

Eltrezar quickly stuffs the tinderbox into a pocket, grabs a hold of one of Thurig's floating legs, and flees as fast as he can towards where he had heard the voice of the man-at-arms. The dwarf may serve as a bumper in this situation.
