Part 9: Plundering the Plunderers' Plunder

Not knowing what else to do, Luban takes his bow and moves to a nook somewhere on the south wall near his party, hoping to get behind the guards and get a better assessment of what is happening.
OOC:
Somewhere in the 47 wall.

As the party flees for the ladder, Luban finds a small alcove to crouch in, hoping to get a better view of these new pursuers. The first man charges into the room. Making a brief scan around his focus falls on the group of Ora, Spugnoir, Gilly. The man stops and sheaths his sword, and the group notices a light crossbow at his hip he intends to draw. Meanwhile, a second man rushes into the chamber behind his counterpart, makes a brief glance around, and focuses on the party. Though both men carry torches, neither are near enough to Mal or Luban to see them yet, and the dwarf and half-orc remain cloaked in darkness.
OOC:
Round 7 ends; Round 8 begins! Turn order is as follows:

Spugnoir begins giving a complicated array of somatic gestures while muttering the incantations of an arcane language, drawing focus on the energies about him, and the guards both look at the man, realizing they've walked into the range of a spellcaster and immediately recognize him as a threat that needs to be dealt with.
OOC:
I'll just get Spugnoir out of the way here real quick...

From where he is hidden, Luban kneels down and takes aim, steadying his bow and focusing on the first guard (with the crossbow). He waits for the man to stand steady, and looses his arrow.

Instead of a sickly wet sound and a cry of pain, he hears the sound of stone being struck. Luban the Unlucky for sure.

@dominion451: At the guard going for the light crossbow, whom Luban just missed, or at the guard with the longsword in hand?

Out of the darkness a small round stone comes sailing out at great velocity, striking the man sheathing his sword and staggering him. His companion sees this and his eyes probe the darkness in search of this unseen assailant. Suddenly both men, almost in unison, begin a strange, unsettling, otherworldly howling, it's noise bursting forth together from their vocal chords with an eerie, "WhooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..." Its a clamoring that can't possibly come from a natural man alone.

The noise runs through crypts and the halls beyond in a way that feels almost as if the men's soundwaves are reverberating off the stonework and gaining strength, giving the sense that this unnatural howling is probably carrying to every secret passageway and hidden nook and cranny hidden from light. If any can't hear this racket they must have lain dead far longer than even the ghouls that once occupied this space, but even they must have wakened now...

Gilly desperately wanted time to search the mute man’s body before it would be denied to her forever!

And yet she knew that they were moments away from being surrounded. And so she grabs the dwarf along again and drags him as far as she is able towards the exit.

"Oh, leave us be, foolish dogs. Or I’ll rub your nose in your own filth!"

The woman clatters her staff against the floor to try and match the racket they made, as her magical words try to instill fear! Then she turns and follows Gilly out!

"Luban, come now! No time for bravery! Maloria, quickly now!"

Trying to cause Fear
Jul 8, 2022 8:04 pm
Gilly uses the wall for bearing and moves past Eltrezar and the floating figure of Thurig Stoneheart, grabbing the dwarf and pulling him behind her as she carefully feels her way through the tunnel leading to the pillar's ladder.

Meanwhile, Ora issues a command to the two guards, hoping to instill enough fear in them to end the encounter without any more bloodshed.
"Oh, leave us be, foolish dogs. Or I’ll rub your nose in your own filth!"
The mage sees the guards as they seem to hesitate for a moment as if weighing their options, before Ora slips into the darkness and begins feeling her way to the ladder tunnel.

Suddenly, Spugnoir finishes his complicated series of gestures and arcane chanting and looks straight at the torch-wielding guards, and the atmosphere in the room begins bear what might be described as a "heaviness" or "sluggishness" to it, and those fleeing have a sense that it takes extra effort to move their leaden feet in front of one another, but only Maloria, Luban, and the magician himself see the two guards suddenly cease their infernal howling and slump to their knees before toppling over in deep slumber, their torches sputtering and struggling to stay ignited on the stone next to them.
OOC:
Round 8 concludes with the two guards asleep on the floor, unable to defend themselves unless awoken. A Round 9 to dispatch them properly perhaps? Or maybe you're thinking not today?

If there are going to be guards of a cult chasing the party out of the ruins, it would at least help to have fewer guards. Though Luban wasn't confident in the morality of his choice, these were men who would otherwise commit heinous atrocities in the name of this Marka... Hare... shit, what was the leader's name?

The thief rushes to the sleeping bodies and, with his curved blade, begins gently but violently preventing them from harming any others.
Jul 8, 2022 10:18 pm
"Err, one moment Luban, my friend," Spugnoir quickly interjects. "I must warn you that these men are only under the effects of this spell so long as they remain unmolested. I bel--"

But as Luban carries out a death sentence on each man, and their life spills onto the stone floor, Spugnoir reconsiders. "Oh! Now that's quite interesting... It seems that bladed weapons will do the trick without awakening them. I should a this note to my book," he mutters to himself.

Listening to the wise and lovely Ora, as well as the serious Gilly, Luban quickly pats down the guards looking for a key (or coin). Regardless of what he finds, he then moves to the man-at-arms and begins to drag him out. The man is heavy!
