Character Creation

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

Jun 19, 2016 3:35 pm
Second level. Anything in the PHB is allowed. If you roll for stats, do so in this forum for character creation. Equipment as per PHB +100 gp. No evil alignments.

This will be combat and action heavy, and I anticipate damage dealers and controllers to shine.

If you want to try rolling your stats (might as well try - characters with low stats will be given the stat array as an option), try it by:
- click the Red Advanced button below
- add a BASIC dice roll,
- in the "Reason" box type "Stats" or something as the description, and
- in the "Roll" box, type: 4d6,4d6,4d6,4d6,4d6,4d6
- leave Visibiliy as "Hide nothing"
Note: you'll have to drop the lowest yourself.

When you post, the roll will be added to the bottom of your post.

Let everyone know what type of character you're playing (race, class, background), so those adverse to duplication can avoid such.

To create a character sheet:
- click "Characters" at the top under the Gamersplane logo
- at the bottom, under New Character, fill out the Label (name, perhaps), choose D&D 5 as the system, and the type as PC.

Once you've created the character, partially or wholly, then you can submit it to the game, by:
- click "Games" at the top under the Gamersplane logo
- click the "Dangerous Prisoner" game
- at the bottom right, under "Submit a Character", select your char from the drop down list and click Submit
Note: the character can still be edited after you submit it.

Any questions or requests, post away!

Skydut had submitted a level 2 half orc paladin with the acolyte background.

With dropped lowest:
16, 9, 15, 17, 15, 3 (that's going to be an interesting dump stat ^^)
Jun 19, 2016 8:55 pm
Haha. I played a dwarf druid last year with a 3 int and a 16 wis. It was pretty fun.
Jun 19, 2016 9:50 pm
Ok, think I've got something. Bit of a trope, but I needed something to dump ;)

Grok "The Bloody", the ex-soldier city guard who got kicked out of his unit after killing a commanding officer in a bloodrage. He's the kindest, dumbest half-orc you ever saw, except in combat. He's now doing odd jobs where he can protect people and goods, and trying to make up for it all.
Jun 19, 2016 9:53 pm
I'll submit a human wizard this evening,
Jun 19, 2016 9:55 pm
Here's my rolls

man, didn't end up with any dumpers, might drop one or two a couple points for laughs

I was thinking of playing a dwarf barbarian. I'll submit a character later tonight.

Edit: It looks like we have a barbarian already m, if I'm interpreting azira's blood rage correctly. I'll play a dwarf cleric.

If we have questions about the campaign setting, should we PM you?
Jun 20, 2016 2:26 am
If you want, send me a PM. Otherwise, post it here.
Jun 20, 2016 2:31 am
I just have a couple basic ones.

1. Are we in any established D&D setting (Forgotten Realms, Eberron, etc.)?
2. If not, does the "standard" pantheon apply? I would like to be a cleric of Moradin if he exists in the campaign.
3. What race is Gichan Abidal?
4. What kind of place is Marian Town? Just a couple details like size, type of location (coastal, etc.) will do.

Thanks so much!
Jun 20, 2016 2:38 am
No established setting.

Standard pantheon is fine.

Gichal Abidal is half elf

Marian Town is a crossroads in a temperate wooded forested area, but it is on a very large river (almost a mile across). Population is several thousand
Jun 20, 2016 8:35 am

Also for the human race do you use they get +1 to every stat or +1 to two stat, a skill and a feat?

All right, that's everybody with a submitted character. I'll do a double check of the characters and post the intro scene tonight.

I did notice that argyle_ninja needs to add the dex mod as the damage bonus to your finesse weapons. Also to your earlier question, there are two human options, as you described.

For some quick background, why doesn't everybody post a quick introduction in this thread about how their characters would appear to the others, along with their most notable trait.

Kelvin (Lvl 2 Wizard, Diviner. Guild Merchant Background) is a traveling bookseller and scribe who specializes in the acquisition and sale of rare maps and charts. He appears plain enough, forgoing anything as ostentatious as robes or a staff for a set of well worn traveling clothes and a lovingly carved walking stick which doubles as his quarterstaff when the moment calls for it. He keeps a neatly trimmed black beard and mustache and is not prone to smiling unless there is a deal to be made. He is somewhat careless and prone to blunder into unfortunate circumstances but has survived this long on what appears to be extraordinary luck, This luck is actually the result of the portents he receives from his study of the arts of divination. He prefers to disable his opponents given the chance, but is not above striking others down if his skin is on the line.
OOC:
I'll stick my starting Portents here

Rolls

Portents - (1d20, 1d20)

Baroril (Lvl 2 Cleric, War Domain, Acolyte Background) is a devout follower of Moradin, the father and creator of the dwarves. He hails from a long line of clerics of Moradin, like his father and grandfathers before him. Striving to exemplify Moradin's tenets, Baroril fiercely upholds the laws of the land and is a stalwart protector of the downtrodden, particularly his fellow dwarf. His precision and dedication to his god manifests in all his behaviors, and can even be seen in the way he keeps his weapons and arms in pristine condition. Though they bare the scratches and dents of battle, Baroril continuously strives to keep them polished and clean. His dark beard is always kept in a perfect braid.

In upholding Moradin's laws, Baroril is known to be stubborn and strictly adhere to the letter of the law. He knows this can be shortsighted, however, and is working to better understand a key tenet of his god: "Wisdom is derived from life and tempered with experience." He know he is still young (for a dwarf) and has much to learn.

Those who call him friend know that his reputation for being stodgy is a reflection of his professionalism and commitment to his job, for they know a Baroril who is fond of drink and song and will sacrifice much to protect those he holds dear.
Jun 20, 2016 6:29 pm
Nar (lvl 2 Half-Orc Paladin, Acolyte Background) is a grim and dour paladin of middle age. His chiseled features seemingly cut from some hard, grey stone, made all the more convincing by his grey skin. Walking with a limp and nursing a cough that seems to rarely subside, Nar would appear to be afflicted with some sickness. Though his actions and speech never belay that he is anything but aware and fully prepared to finish the mission.

Nar is dressed in clothing and armor that seems to have been stained by some blackened oil. Yet when he walks by, his scent smells closer to the grave than some flammable liquid. His great club is never far from his reach and neither is his flask.

Grok (lvl 2 Barbarian, Soldier Background) is a simple fellow. Like most half orcs he's a head higher than most humans, and built like a prize fighter. He has only known military life, and has the scars crisscrossing most of his body. He mostly wears the gentle smile of a simpleton or a quizzical look of confusion.

He wears an old and worn uniform of the local army, and has two insignias of rank hanging around his neck. One is his own, the rank of private, the other is a sergeants insignia. On his back is a old battered greataxe, a handaxe on each hip. Four javelins hang in a sling around one shoulder, an old battered satchel hangs over the other.

Grok is eager to please anyone who looks like a good champion, especially if they are of rank. He'll usually look to authority figures he perceives as good for what he should do, as if he knows his own moral compass can't quite be trusted.

He'll always try to stand up for the weak or innocent, but mostly make a mess of it if he tries it alone. He often rambles on about what 'pappy' used to say, his old commanding officer who he had adopted as a father figure.

Character review: Kelvin. DM_Meyner, could you indicate the 5 first level spells he will have prepared. Maybe an asterisk at the beginning of the spell name. Everything else looked great.
Jun 20, 2016 11:35 pm
Character review: Net Aloasam. Skydut:
- you could list the halforc racial abilities under feats/abilities.
- there are checkboxes for skill proficiencies. You should have Intimidation (half orc), +2 pally skills, + Insight & Religion from the background
- choose a religion/god for the acolyte bg

Character review: Baroril Durzak. Argyle_ninja, all good.
Jun 20, 2016 11:48 pm

- add Dex mod to ranged weapon damage
Otherwise all good.

Jun 22, 2016 3:28 am
Hi Skydut. You should have 4 skills you're proficient in. You get Insight and Religion from the acolyte background, plus two from the paladin class.

You should check the prof bonus for saves. Paladins get Charisma and Wisdom.

Also, you should have a third spell. I think that it is 2+ half your pally level.
Jun 22, 2016 3:39 am
Thank you. I think I might have it now. I hope.

Hanson Gordon(lvl 2 Half-Elf Rogue, Criminal background) is silver-tongued cunning of a man but with the down side of when to be cunning! He is in his late 20s with bright green eyes and dark hair. He wears a green lined cloak with a small old burns near the bottom that reminds him of why he stop being a criminal and when he started doing something about the criminals that he use too call buddies.

When he was a criminal he left home to wreck some old tailor shop not paying its protection money, so he set the shop on fire. Little did he know that his love was in very same shop. To his horror, his love ran out on fire screaming trying to protect something. He tried to put her out, but it was to late her life passed right in front of his eyes. To his surprise the thing she was try to protect was a green cloak with a tag on it saying "To Hanson the love of my life. From Gwen.". After that he sworn a promise to himself to try to redeem himself in his loves eyes so when he joins her in the after life she can maybe forgive him.

He will doing anything to stop criminals even walk on grey lines at times. After a lot of work he finally worked his way up the be one of the detectives to track down some of the dangerous wanted men. He takes pride in never walking away from a person in need of help since his promise on that dark day.
Jun 22, 2016 8:27 pm
Regarding Paladin spells: the number you get is your Charisma modifier + half your paladin level.
Jun 22, 2016 8:41 pm
Jhishma (clan name, Sheabliajeth) is a dragonborn foreigner. He was the standard-bearer for a company of soldiers, but doesn't talk much about it. Recently, he has demonstrated fierce loyalty to his new group of companions - the posse he was recruited to in order to bring in the notorious Gichan Abidal.

Jishma's skin and scales are silvery and cool to the touch. Over his chainmail he wears a (holy?) symbol: a wrought iron snowflake. A few of his characteristics have been revealed to you in your recent travels together...

...Background Characteristics:
Grim and brave, he looks like he could "stare down a hellhound without flinching."
He seems to take his responsibilities quite seriously, "I do what I must and obey just authority." Some of you might wonder if he takes it too seriously, as he was overheard once or twice to say, "I obey the law, even if the law causes misery."
While loathe to speak more of it, you have heard him say, "I'll never forget the crushing defeat my company suffered or the enemies who dealt it."

As a Paladin, Jhishma's Patron/deity is The Fey Lady of Winter (Mab or Morgan, but Jhishma doesn't know) - at level three the plan is to multiclass into Warlock - pact of the blade, eventually...

He hefts a well cared for greataxe over his shoulder of a foreign design.

What is the recommended way for tracking current HP and spell slots on these character sheets???
Jul 13, 2016 5:56 am
Hi all -- I'm rolling to be the new Nar. Keaton did a pretty good job -- I'm going for a Bale rather than a Clooney.

Looks ok to me, adjusted for 1/2 Orc
S14+2, D13, C13+1, I11, W14, Ch14 (edited to lower Dex and raise Wis)

That'll make a pretty strong character, with potentially only one stat without a bonus. When you've filled out a character sheet, go to Games-> Dangerous Prisoner and at the bottom right there is a Submit button. Do that and I'll review and accept it.

Character looks good Cmbrian. Jump on in to the action, it's Nar's turn.

Brief summary: you were escorting a dangerous prisoner (that you had captured) to jail, but then some infernal escape plan was activated. Now, the party is engaged with the rest of the prisoners while four others, including the Dangerous Prisoner have probably escaped.

There is one prisoner left, ten or fifteen feet in front of you, who is grappling the other paladin in your party, Jhishma. So far, the party have been delivering knock out blows, but two of the downed prisoners are heavily blooded.

Cyrind'ae Torviel

http://orig08.deviantart.net/9a3c/f/2012/287/5/6/agail_enthess_by_rhineville-d5hrur2.jpg

Cyrin'dae used to be an authority in the realm of ancient history. Many of the books she wrote on ancient battles, long lost-civilizations, and disposed dynasties of monarchs have found their way in various libraries and universities of the realms. Sadly, this was not to last.

One day she received a letter from her colleague Olrich Stonesinger asking about the coronation of the Resborough line, the current rulers of the kingdom where Cyrind'ae and Olrich were from. Looking in history books to find an answer for her colleague, she found some strange contradictions which she reported to her superior. The next day, she was discredited, several of her colleagues coming out and claiming she had made up facts in several of the books she wrote. Cyrind'ae was infuriated, and defended herself against such spurious accusations. She even offered to procure her notes to prove the accusation were false, but when she went to her study, she found it ablaze.

Disgraced, she had to leave the university where she was working. She though of visiting her colleague Olrich to tell him the news, but when she arrived, she learned from his family that Olrich had died two days ago under mysterious circumstances. What did Olrich uncovered and what sort of secret regarding the Resborough dynasty are people trying to cover?

Disappointed, she travelled the land, taking up the career of adventurer when she came upon an organisation called The Loreseekers. A group of adventurers dedicated to finding obscure knowledge and artifact of the past. She enlisted, received their official badge (a silvered star) marking her as a member of The Loreseekers, and set up to find buried knowledge from distant past, and perhaps, find an answer to this mysterious conspiracy covering the Resborough dynasty so that her colleague Olrich did not die in vain...

Thanks for joining Kalajel. 5e bards rock, I'm glad you rolled one. (My first 5e PC was a bard, too.)

I like the backstory, makes me want to... Nvm, I'll save that for a surprise.

Cyrind'ae had found her way to Marian Town, a crossroads within the Duchy of Harcourt. The whole town is talking about events yesterday where a jailbreak turned into a full blown demon invasion. A few adventurers were on hand to help set things right (with a little help from the local archmage, perhaps). Your pockets and cups runneth over that night, for generosity, gratitude, and goodwill keep the requests for stories, songs, and tales coming deep into the night. The center of action for you is the tavern The Lost Duckling, which was ground zero for the demon incursion. One of their regulars, Buxom Bella, was killed and partially eaten by the foul beasts.
Not intending to start a role-playing thread here, just giving you background for the next chapter, which will start the next day.
Sep 5, 2016 11:01 pm
Welcome Kalajel. Your bard looks great!

4d6 : (3661) = 16

4d6 : (2635) = 16

4d6 : (2464) = 16

Sep 7, 2016 1:11 am
I like those stats.
If its cool with you all, I will be playing a ranger that uses a crossbow. I will have a full thing written for him tomorrow or the next day at the latest. Sorry all if I am slowing the game down. I had a test sort of "pop up" that I thought was next week. Even still, I will have everything ready by Thursday night at the very latest.
Sep 7, 2016 1:16 am
That's cool Nikcollini, Thursday is fine. Just remember to drop the lowest of the 4d6 rolls ;-)

Also, check out the current post. Your character should be someone who volunteers to escort the letters to the king. If we get going before Thursday, you will be a nondescrip volunteer up to the point that you jump in.
Sep 7, 2016 2:06 am
Jhishma is 5 gp short of splint mail. Any chance I could trade in my heavy crossbow for the difference?
Sep 7, 2016 2:13 am
Keep the crossbow. You can get it with a 5gp discount.
Sep 7, 2016 2:23 am
Right, right, lull me into thinking how kind you are just before the vampire ambush on the "benign" letter carrying errand, right?
Sep 7, 2016 2:46 am
"You find a giant cache of healing potions and the games autosaves."
Sep 8, 2016 4:36 am
I am making my character's sheet real quick so I can get started tomorrow evening, and i've got a few questions if thats cool:
Am I allowed to switch out Longbow and quiver of arrows from Ranger starting equipment to a heavy crossbow?
Also are we allowing variant humans?
Sep 8, 2016 4:55 am
Yes and yes
Sep 8, 2016 5:06 am
I'll approve the character for now, but your stats are way too high. You rolled 11,11,15,14,14,14 after dropping the lowest. Variant Human gives you two +1s.

Also, in the weapon attacks, please put your attack bonus in the attack cell, rather than the damage type, and add your str/dex mod to the damage rolls (I.e., 1d6+3). This will save you and me both time later.
Sep 8, 2016 1:25 pm
Gotcha. I use the stats I rolled up above right? I rolled four 16's, a 14, and a 12. Is that not what I use? I'll fix it all tonight.

We roll 4d6 but drop the lowest die of those 4. For example, if you rolled 3,4,5,6 you would drop the 3 for a net roll of 15 rather than 18. There isn't a way to do the "drop the lowest die" in the roll tool, so we have to do that manually.

You can always enter the dice in the field as "1d6, 1d6, 1d6, 1d6" without the quotation marks...

(I do not know how to post pictures)

An ex-solider, Owen Daughtery used to be a very talented Scout for the King’s army. He has always lived in and around the Marian Town area, and he loves his home. In fact, he typically takes it upon himself to hunt dangerous creatures or animals around the town, in order to ensure the local’s safety outside the town proper. As such he has never lost an edge with his crossbow, even after retiring.Rumors about his early retirement swim about the town, but no clear cut reason has ever surfaced. The best guess is that he had a falling out with a superior officer.
He only just returned to town when he heard about the mess that befell it at the jail, and promptly volunteered to take help take word to the king. Demons were not something he is used to dealing with, and would rather not see his home burn.

(Hope the sheet is fixed, let me know what else I need to do.)

I edited your sheet, see the weapon attacks. Let me know if you disagree with my math.

Also, there isn't a spot to keep track of your spells, so maybe keep that in your notes (spells per day, max and spells used).

Otherwise, looked great!

Thank you that works fine. Seems I am confused, what is the difference between attack bonus and damage?
Also, does that mean I can get started or do you need to introduce me first?

I suggest reading about combat in chapter 9 of the PHB, pp. 189-200 (but at least, specifically, p. 193 "Making An Attack")
Sep 8, 2016 11:15 pm
If you make a crossbow attack, you would add the "to hit" roll and the damage roll to the post. The "to hit" roll is 1d20 plus the bonus (+7 for you) and the damage is 1d10+3. Separating them by a comma allows you to do it in one line.

This post had such a roll for an example.

Rolls

Crossbow attack - (1d20+7, 1d10+3)

1d20+7 : (12) + 7 = 19

1d10+3 : (3) + 3 = 6

Sep 8, 2016 11:16 pm
I'll arbitrate the effect of each attack, and let you know when to roll what. As we stand, jump into the game!
Sep 9, 2016 1:50 am
Cool. I'll do that. Do I add prof to the attack bonus of the damage?
Sep 9, 2016 1:59 am
Welcome Nikcollini!

Prof is only added to the attack roll, not damage.
Dec 24, 2016 11:02 pm
Alright, I hope I do this correctly.

Rolls

Stats - (4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6, 4d6)

4d6 : (5161) = 13

4d6 : (5145) = 15

4d6 : (2324) = 11

4d6 : (1341) = 9

4d6 : (1456) = 16

4d6 : (3513) = 12

Dec 24, 2016 11:04 pm
Cool so it looks like 12, 14, 9, 8, 15, 11. Not the greatest, but not too shabby. I'll post a small backstory after filling in my stats.
Dec 24, 2016 11:10 pm
Hey Toastymalone. I've approved your character for now, but let me know when you're finished editing it and I'll review it. Or let us know if you have any questions about GP mechanics.
Dec 24, 2016 11:16 pm
Awesome, I'll PM you when I've finished. I realized I should probably roll my health here too, so here goes.

Rolls

HP - (1d8, 1d8, 1d8)

1d8 : (5) = 5

1d8 : (5) = 5

1d8 : (7) = 7

Dec 24, 2016 11:29 pm
There are some things you'll need to keep track of in the notes section, or as a "feat/ability". Like spell slots maximum and remaining, and spells prepared. The latter you could denote with a star in the spell name.

A devoted young priest of Apollo, lord of light. (Human Cleric (Light Domain), Acolyte Background)

Abandoned on the great, ivory steps of the Temple of Apollo as a boy, Fritz was accepted into the monastic order, and has lived his entire life nestled in the community of monks and holy men. Perhaps this cloistered lifestyle is to blame for his overwhelming desire to unshackle himself from the shelter of the church. To shine the light of Apollo on the rest of the world. To shine his own light on the rest of the world.

Fritz is a young man in his early twenties, with youthful features. His hair is a slightly curly dark blonde, with a regal sheen. His eyes are dark and harsh, in spite of the rest of his face. He generally wears a white, hooded robe, with gold ornamentation over his protective gear, and a necklace with a small Delphic tripod, signifying his allegiance to Apollo.

A cleric! Oh blessed day! A cleric!

Your character looks good, except AC s/b 16 with the shield.

Also, since you're not level 1, you should have better gear - take 420 gp in extra wealth.
Dec 25, 2016 5:54 pm
Why thank you.
Dec 25, 2016 8:31 pm
Your username reminds me of the old mobster nicknames...

"Yeah, you need some fake papers? Toasty Malone is the guy to see for that. Why they call him Toasty? Hey, don't be a wise guy, okay..." (to be read in Joe Pesci's voice).
Dec 25, 2016 8:32 pm
...did you say Gangbusters?
Dec 25, 2016 8:42 pm
"Nyaa, you'll never catch me alive copper! Nyaa..."
Dec 25, 2016 8:49 pm
Haha I like this group already!

Nar will take the Great Weapon Master Feat rather than an ability score bump.
+ 7 hp; new max: 34
OOC:

Great Weapon Fighter:
You’ve learned to put the weight of a weapon to your advantage, letting its momentum empower your strikes. You gain the following benefits:

1] On your turn, when you score a critical hit with a melee weapon or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with one, you can make one melee weapon attack as a bonus action.
2] Before you make a melee attack with a heavy weapon that you are proficient with, you can choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If the attack hits, you add +10 to the attack’s damage.

Cyrind'ae increases both her STR and CHA by 1 each. I'll take Vicious Mockery as my new cantrip and Suggestion as my new 2nd level spell.

I'd gladly keep a harp for myself. :P

All right, Fritz Wilhelm looks good, so I'm going to get this party (re)started... we continue now to Chapter 3...

Owen will take his Dex up two points, and take the standard HP increase.
