OOC:
Anybody else want to run the long range sensor scans? Maybe Education + Science or Navigation?
May 14, 2022 12:12 pm
OOC:
Sounds like that might be right up Doc's alley! I'll give it a go.
Doc nods at Sam's suggestion. "I'll take care of the sensor scan." Placing the coffee down and donning his white lab coat he makes his way to the control board for the sensor array. Always anxious for some new discovery, it's these moments that make Doc's palms sweaty with anticipation. Half wanting everything to be normal, and half wanting something new and exciting to be detected. . .his mind is a jumble just moments before running them. He mutters, "Let's see what's what. . ."

He begins a long-range scan toward the targets.

Rolls

Long-Range Sensor Scan (Education +4, Science Officer +2) - (1d6+6)

(5) + 6 = 11

Doc finds the transponder of two ships in the vicinity, and the survey outpost. Both appear to be entirely automated and on low power mode. They're really just broadcasting their location to avoid collisions in the close proximity. The Science vessel STS Tranquility is closer, a day away if you asked course. Its sister ship the STS Ravana is closer to the outpost. There is no sign of the cargo ship STS Rhapsody.

OOC:
Doc would inform Sam of the close proximity I think.
Addressing Sam, "Sensors indicate Science vessel STS Tranquility to be a day away, perhaps a course change there would be most logical. Yes?"

Benton will be listening into the conversation. "I agree with Doc, a course correction could not hurt." After saying that, Bentom will head to the communication area and start listening to any long-range messages, relays, or alerts that came in that, even if they don't pertain to us, might be of interest of what is going on in this or nearby sectors.
OOC:
ooc: I don't know what all I can do until we get to the other ships/to the outpost. So, think of this as bentom turning the dial on the radio to see if any radio stations are on in the blackness of space

"One day... that sounds good to me, Doc. Tranquillity... I like the name already. I'm sure it will be a walk in the park."

I'll NPC Dreamwaffle's character.
Friday
Friday sets a course for the STS Tranquility, and engages the engines to course correct the vector. "23 hours to intercept."

We can skip ahead. If you want to do anything to prepare, just leave a note.

good to skip here too - let's see how tranquil Tranquillity really is :)

STS Tranquility
With the navigation laid in, following a beacon to the STS Tranquility, Friday pilots your ship on an indirect direct route. The gravitational tides of the star Sigma Madelline, along with the gas giants and rocky planets, along with acceleration and braking thrust phases, make the route a long uneven arc rather than a straight line.

17 hours later...

The ship approaches the STS Tranquility, the complex braking thrust getting you into a parallel orbit around the star near by. Matched and just slightly higher, you get a good view of the science vessel. The powerful sensor arrays are extended (they would be retracted in transit) but there are no lights shining from the vessel, other than navigational warning beacons that flash routinely.

How do you propose to investigate the craft?

on the Bridge of their spacecraft, Sam ponders their options with the others.

"Well, they either really like the dark, in there, or their ship is running in minimal consumption mode, for some reason..." he says, looking at the dark shape of the Tranquillity.

"So... do we want to try an external inspection? Do we have serviceable drone units to send?"

He scratches his goatee beard. "Or we could go the old fashioned way, and prepare a boarding party. What do you say?"
May 20, 2022 10:09 pm
We do an external scan...as well as we can, then we can go with the boarding party. Deacon says as they toss out ideas.

"Very well. I also think a boarding party would be in order, and I volunteer".
OOC:
Who needs to roll for the external scan?
May 23, 2022 3:51 pm
OOC:
Whoever rolls will get different information based upon the applied profession. Engineering will get structure details, Science Officer will get more analytical deets, and Security Officer will get weapons/hull status and any signs of combat.

Sam gets to work, trying to get a visual survey of the visible parts of the Tranquillity, enhancing and zooming in on the pixelated imagery relayed back by the sensors.

Education+Engineering - (1d6+1+2)

(4) + 3 = 7

Sam can see from the sensor readouts that the STS Tranquility is structurally sound. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the hull, and the hull temperature reads like a ship with functioning life support -- it's radiating heat like an operational ship rather than a space hulk. The reactor is running in low power mode, but is functioning.

I am drawing a blank on what a medical/ liaison officer can scan for :p

While the others are doing scans, I will be prepping the craft that will be used to do boarding. Double checking the hull, life support, and weapons, as well as prepping 2-3 packs for whatever boarding party goes. I will also prepare the RETURN procedure devices, such as the decontamination chambers and vital checks

Sam will share with the crew what he found.
"Phew. Well, that's encouraging. The ship's not dead, just looks in low power. But things seem to be functioning, on board."
OOC:
sorry if I missed this, but... what is OUR ship called?
