Casually the creature pushes Roald aside, as if he wasn't there. What the...
Roald turns to see if he can still prevent the Gargoyle from getting to Asha and Albert. He sees him collapsing and a shiver runs down Roald's spine.
no...
NO, ALBERT!

The gargoyle, busy with the ritual, isn't paying any attention to Roald.
He has to make a choice, Albert or Asha, fast.
It's only a short distance to the safety of the forest. Roald puts his sword away and sneaks around the gargoyles back. Before he comes into sight he speeds up his movement, grabs Asha and pulls her towards the treeline.
OOC:
dice roll: dex for sneaking, or str for pulling Asha, or con for digging deep. I'll roll +1 and if you decide CON is more appropriate we can substract the 1.
maybe multiple roles are necessary? I mean, if you really want to end the adventure :)

Meanwhile, somewhere in Albert's subconscious...

Albert opens his eyes and slowly stands up. "Asha? Asha, where are you?" He was holding her a second ago, then he tripped and now she's gone. He looks around, but doesn't recognize the area. In fact, it's hard to recognize anything because the place where he's standing is covered in a thick layer of fog. It's definitely a forest, he can see a few tree trunks.

"NO, ALBERT!" A sound echoes around him, faint, yet he can tell it's Roald's voice. It sounds far away. "ROALD? IS THAT YOU?" Albert shouts towards nothingness. He starts to walk in the direction he thought the sound was coming from. His legs hurt, a lot! Reducing his tread to shuffling forward instead of walking. The sound echoes again, this time from another direction. "Roald, what's going on? Where did this fog come from?" But Roald does not answer.

"DEORING???" He asks more urgently. Suddenly, he hears Deoring's voice, similar to Roald's. "Captain, look behind you!" There is no way of pinpointing the location of the voice. Albert walks through the forest aimlessly, searching for his friends.

- Roald -

As you snatch Ahsa's limp body away, the gargoyle turns an expressionless --yet still clearly angry-- face towards you, plants is claws in the ground, leans forward and appears to... inhale. The blue light intensifies, and you can now see the edge of the sphere it forms. As you drag the body past that edge you feel a resistance and unrecognisably distorted ghostly wisps are sucked from the body towards the gargoyle's open mouth, as though it is trying to... eat her soul? That would not be the strangest thing you have seen recently, in this place.

As you pull, the bubble elongates, and then presses against the invisible barrier at the forest's edge. With a herculean effort you drag Ahsa through, and with snapping sensation the gargoyle looses its grip and the 'soul' --distorted as it was-- springs back into the body and she takes a shuddering breath that you probably had not noticed she was holding.

Groggily her eyes open, and she looks around, frightened. But when she sees the trees she laughs joyously --ignoring the spasm of pain that laughter brings-- and, smiling excitedly, gabbles at you in a language you don't understand --though the tone suggests gratitude-- before sighing contentedly, closing her eye and falling asleep, the hand not holding her side burying itself rapturously in the soil.

The two gargoyles stand motionless, glaring at you from their side of the treeline, Albert's body sprawled behind them.

What do you do?

Deoring helps the Captain move more quickly by providing his shoulder as support.

"Now Captain, lean your weight on my shoulder to take some pressure off of that leg. Look - Roald has gotten Asha to safety! The gargoyles aren't following him, they're just standing there. Let's head a little over to the right to keep a little distance from them just to be sure. Then we can meet up with Roald and Asha and make a plan."

As they walk, he offers a silent prayer to Raynor to light the way to safety.

Once they reach the woods, Deoring lets out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Raynor." he says, then, to the Captain, "Just a little farther - I can just make out Roald through the trees."

After another minute or so, they make it to where Roald is standing and Asha is sitting. He suggests to the Captain that she sit down as well to take the weight off her leg and then helps her to do so.

"Roald, we have to go back for Albert. The gargoyles are just standing there, but I'm not sure how long we have until they attack once more. The time to act is now, but the Captain and Asha are in no shape to fight."

He turns to the Captain. "No offense, ma'am."

"Roald, are you with me?"

"Why are you wasting time with me?!" The captain exclaims when you have gotten her seated and mention Albert's plight. "Go get him instead!" She orders --probably not meaning to emasculate you by taking away the fact that you were already planning on just that. "He is still breathing." She says after peering intently at Albert for a moment. "MOVE!"

She does not appear impressed by your try-hard attitude, and you get the impression that everything impressive you have done so far, fell just outside her sight or notice, and that this group would not be her first choice of fighting companions if she had such a choice.

There are now three gargoyles standing between you and your fallen companion You don't know if more are coming.

After, what to Albert seems like, an hour of walking through thick fog, he spots a flickering light up ahead. Albert walks towards it, cautiously, and notices the sound of rushing water. Like a stream or a pond. "Don't worry, Albert, I'm not here to hurt you." A voice says, and as he hears it, a figure appears through the mist in front of him. The man is cloaked in a dark coat and standing by a small raft near the water's edge.

"Don't try anything! I've got Raynor protecting me!" Albert shouts, but it's obvious in his voice that he's not even sure Raynor is protecting him anymore. "Ah, yes." The figure says. "Well, you see, Raynor is the one who sent me." A hand moves up and motions for Albert to come closer. "Come closer, Albert. I'd like to have a little chat with you."

Albert doesn't want to come closer, yet his legs are moving. Like he's not in control of them right now. "What's going on? What are you doing? Who are you? Stop!"
- "Just a chat, Albert. I will answer all your questions in a minute." The cloaked individual says in a calm and soothing voice.

Dragging Asha to safety, seeing the smile on her face, it makes Roald somewhat happy and fulfilled. He is strangely enjoying the moment, staring at Deoring and the captain who are limping towards him.
Then his gaze turns back to the Gargoyles and... ALBERT!

His mind goes in al directions, not able to think straight he just stands there staring. in the back Deoring is mumbling something about a fight but the words don't get through to him.

-"MOVE!"

Roald snaps out of his daydream.
Only one way to do this
"Get Albert, Deoring. I'll distract these stone monsters"
Without waiting for an answer, Roald starts running. After a couple of meters, out of reach from the gargoyles, he continues running on the unsafe side of the treeling.

Quickly Roald takes a look over his shoulder, are they following?
OOC:
Roald's plan is to keep on running parallel to the treeline until the gargoyles get too close. Hopefully this will give Deoring enough time to grab Albert.
I added a +con roll as a time tracker. The higher the score, the longer the run before diving back in the bushes. Maybe he trips on a (very)failed roll?

The gargoyles stand passive, watching you in puzzlement, and --though without appearing to move-- seem to share a look, their stillness speaks clearly "this guy, what is he like?"

They do not seem to care about you, their attention is reserved for the place where they ladies are resting.

It is as though, once Ahsa got out of their reach, they just gave up, like she was the only one that mattered to them.

"OH, COME ON. you got to be kidding me." Roald stops running and starts waving his arms.
"Over here you ugly dumb water fountains!" . The gargoyles don't budge, one might say they stand like statues.
Roald picks up an egg size rock from the ground. With a "TUD" it lands on one of the gargoyles' shoulders.

"Come and get me! what are you waiting for!

Roald draws his sword to emphasize his words.

- Roald -

Throwing rocks at rocks does not seem to do anything, and, given how little effect swords had when attacking, it is not surprising that they don't care at all when you draw yours.

Upon the Captain’s order to "Move!" And Roald’s offer to distract the gargoyles, Deoring replies to them both with a quick, "I’m on it!" and heads straight toward Albert.

When he gets to Albert, he checks and, yes he is breathing. Whew! Deoring isn’t quite sure he can carry Albert by himself. He tries to lift Albert’s upper body by turning him on his back, lifting his head and shoulders and grabbing him from under his armpits. Then he pulls Albert backward, letting Albert’s legs and heels drag.

You feel a blazing pain in your back, buttock, or thigh, you might think the gargoyles have finally deigned to acknowledge you and attack, but, if you glance back, they are still standing impassive, not even looking in your direction.

With the strain, after the dehydration, you think you have torn or pulled a muscle, the pain is worse than the centipede bite, and you just know you will walk with a limp for weeks.

• Have you experienced such a thing before, or is this "an old man's problem" in your mind?

If you don't want to tear it further, you will have to ask for help, and possibly bear the captain scorn.

Deoring winces in pain as it burns in his lower back. He realizes, too late, that he forgot to pray to Raynor before attempting to rescue Albert. He’s feeling Raynor’s fire now.

How could I forget to pray? he wonders.

"Hey Roald, the gargoyles seem to have turned back to statues. Can you help me carry Albert over to the Captain and Asha?"
Jul 27, 2022 5:32 am
Between them, Roald and Deoring carry Albert back to the others. The gargoyles have not moved throughout the process.

The captain has torn strips off her shirt and bandaged her leg, and can hobble around. "Does he have any bandages?" She asks, assuming he is a 'healer' and indicating Albert's pack. "We should dress his wounds, or something...

"Are you hurt?" She asks Deoring (and Roald, but mainly Deoring).

"We need a hospital." She says. "But first, water. And some rest... but I don't like those things watching us... but I don't want to move the injured..." Her decisive orders become uncertain at the end and she grimaces in pain.

'Asha' needs proper medical attention soon or she will get worse. Albert should not be moved and he should get better (though you can't know that for sure).

The figure is more clearly visible now and with that, Albert understands what's going on. "Are you the reaper? You've come to take me, haven't you?" A tear rolls down his cheek. "That has yet to be decided, Albert." The reaper replies. That's when Albert notices a shape on the small raft, just behind the reaper. "Asha!" Her lifeless body is floating calmly on the pond. He tries to reach her, but his legs are out of his control right now. "Is she... dead?" He asks.

"Not yet, but she's not in a good way." The voice is still so soothing that it's hard to link it to 'Death'. "Neither are you, Albert. Your fate and hers might still be linked, even in this place between realms." Death takes a step closer to Albert. "Tell me, Albert, is she really worth forsaking the vow you made to Raynor? He gave you a job, you know. It could have lead to greatness." The reaper doesn't sound like he's judging the decision. He sounds almost genuinely interested.

"I... She... Well, you see..." Albert stumbles for words. "I don't want her to die. Can't you just take me and let her live?" The figure seems to be lost in thought, weighing the options when Albert gets a strange sensation, as if being pulled backwards. "Hey, stop that!" He shouts at Death, but Death isn't paying any attention to him right now.

"I will go and look for water, give me all your waterskins. Deoring, can you stay here to defend the injured just in case?"
Without waiting for a reply, Roald starts collecting Asha's and Albert's waterskin.

"This shouldn't take long, I think I can already hear some water trickling."
OOC:
Probably Roald's wishful imagination
Aug 1, 2022 8:13 am
When Roald has collected all the waterskins he will start walking down. He knows that eventually he will run into a little stream if he keeps going down. As he his decyphering the land and layout of the forest he also tries to remember the way back. It should be easy: keep climbing until he reaches the edge of the forest and then look for 3 statues.

The sound of water was not in his imagination. Very soon, Roald finds a small stream. Excited by this find he runs to the water, almost tripping over a rabbit that flees under a bush at Roald's arrival.
Roald Gulps down as much water as he can, and fills all the canteens.
He hurries back to the others and tells them there is meat to be found nearby. Deoring is already working on the sled for Asha. Albert is still lying motionless.

Roald bends over Albert and gently pinches his shoulder.

"Albert, wake up. I've got water for you. C'mon man, we can't do this without you!"
Roald moistens Albert's lips with a few drops from his waterskin and keeps trying to wake him up.
Aug 2, 2022 10:57 am
"I'm afraid it's not that easy." The reaper tells Albert. "One soul cannot replace another. Besides, I believe Raynor is not done with you yet." The figure gestures towards Asha. "You can save her, if your faith is strong enough." It pulls a book from under its robes and shows it to Albert. It's a book he recognizes. One that he read, long ago, at the temple. He reads the title out loud.

"The battle of Handu." A book about one of the most revered military leaders of old. A woman who conquered regions in Raynor's name. A tactical genius. Albert remembers a quote from the book. The smart will always conquer the strong.

"Albert, wake up." Death says suddenly. Albert stares, confused. "Huh? What do you mean?" "I've got water for you." The voice sounds weird, not the same as before. It sounds more like... Roald's voice. "C'mon man, we can't do this without you!" Albert watches as the pond begins to ripple and a spout of water hits him straight in the face. That's when he opens his eyes and sees Roald helping him to some much needed water.

"Roald." He says weakly. "What... What happened? Asha?" His body hurts with every breath, but that will pass, he tells himself.
OOC:
You don't have to explain what happened in IC. We can just say that things are explained while Albert gets his bearings.
Albert will also tell you about his 'dream'.
