Crystal Cave Adventure (RP)

May 12, 2022 11:33 am
Continued from Descending the Temple Depths.

With the door behind you barred to the best of your ability, you all can turn your attention to the new surroundings on this side of the door.

While it initially appeared to be dark, upon stepping across some hidden barrier (merely marked by the pretense of the door) your senses are suddenly flooded with LIGHT. The whether it is the light from your carried weapons or some 'inner glow', the large room is filled with crystals that pulse gently with a warm radiance, hiding all shadows and making it impossible to judge distance.

Initially all was silent, but --possibly as a result of your bodes changing the previously stable ambient temperature-- a quiet, tinkling, crackling sound emanates to the crystals from your position, fading as you stand still, and returning as you move.

There is no sign of any life... or unlife for that matter. All in clean and shiny.

"I feel bad traipsing my dirty boots in here." Asha says in a subdued whisper.
May 12, 2022 9:15 pm
As Orset and Albert finish barring the door, his eyes are slivers trying to take in the new environment through the bright light as his eyes begin to adjust. He then checks to make sure everyone made it through safely.
OOC:
Has Orset ever experienced something like this underground, should I make a move?
May 12, 2022 9:29 pm
Albert is sitting down on the cavern floor. He needs a few moments to unwind after the rush of battle just now.

"I.. Is anyone hurt?" He manages to stutter after a while. "If so, I can try to help with that." He's specifically looking at Asha, who had almost completely slipped into the background during the fight, as far as Albert noticed anyway. "What happened in there, Asha? You seemed almost frozen. Did that weird chill from the skeletons get to you?"

Now that the adrenaline is fading, Albert can feel his aging bones ache. He's not the young whipper-snapper he used to be anymore, and he's definitely noticing it. He's so preoccupied with things in his head that the change of scenery doesn't really register, until it occurs to him that he's breathing much more easily in here. He takes a few deep breaths.
May 12, 2022 9:37 pm
- Albert -

"Cold?" Asha asks --clearly a 'no' with am added 'I have no idea what you are talking about'-- then her confusion takes in your following words, and she brushes at her clothing desperately. "Did something get on me!?" She demands, still not liking the idea of any contact with anything undead.

You will recall that she was not willing to go near the bones in temple above either, even well before they started moving. It seemed like a reasonable enough reaction at the time, just one that is inconvenient for an adventurer.
May 12, 2022 9:50 pm
Noticing the way Asha is avoiding bones, Albert tries to encourage her. "You're going to need to face your fears at some point, Asha. A situation like that could happen again, and we can really use your help fighting these things. I know you have Raynor's strength within you. I saw it on that weapon." He points to Asha's blade, the dim light no longer visible in this brighter light from the crystals.

Albert looks around at all the different crystals and gets an idea.
May 12, 2022 10:05 pm
- Albert -

"I don't feel at all strengthfull." Asha says, resentfully at your rebuke, but calming down as she discovers that there is no 'skeleton residue' on her. Her petulant instinct to deny being afraid is even too much for her after recent events.

"Which weapon?"She looks around in bafflement for the one you are indicating, also looking down at hers in disappointment. None of the weapon glows are visible in the bright light, and she missed the whole process of igniting the others while she was hiding from the world, so the last she knew: some where 'chosen' and she was not one of them.
Looking around you are surprised to see there is not a single broken crystal anywhere in sight, like nothing has disturbed them or put outside pressure on them for the duration of their growth. This is mighty strange, some of them must have taken centuries to grow --if you or any of your companions have any clue about crystal growth-- and the door did not look that old.
May 12, 2022 10:28 pm
"Your axe. I saw it glowing just before we met that giant bug." Albert replies before he turns to Orset to ask him something. "Say Orset, do you think it's safe to break off these crystals? If it is, then would you be so kind to pickaxe one off for me? I have an idea."
May 12, 2022 10:40 pm
- Albert -

"Yeah, right." Asha declaims, not believing you. "I did not see any 'glow' when... using it against that horrid bug." The brief hesitation shows she is unsure of her memory, but she meant to attack the centipede... and would have --really-- if you guys had just given her enough time. She now holds the axe in her hands, as if to prove her point... or as a comfort.
A pickax should make short work of shattering a crystal. Just because one can do a thing not mean you should, though.
May 14, 2022 4:42 am
Deoring stares, wide-eyed, at the crystals all around. He slowly turns in place, gazing at their mysterious glow.

"Wow! It’s, its, it’s… so… beautiful!" he stammers.

Hearing Albert ask Orset to break off a crystal, he’s alarmed.

"Wait! Don’t do it, Orset! This place is so perfect, so pure."

Then, realizing he’s overstepping his place, he hastily adds, "I mean, um, Albert, would you first please explain your idea?"
May 14, 2022 9:03 am
''Shhht, everybody be quite for a moment please, listen!''
A eary silence falls over the cave. Roald carefully walks a couple of steps... ''There! Did you hear that, it sounds like when a rock is getting so hot that it will break, or like charcoal in a firepit''
Again he walks and stops.
''I fear we are disturbing this magnificent place, and it feels, ... wrong''

"You'll have to take my word for it, Asha. Even though I'm only a simple barkeep without a bar, I still hold Raynor in high regard. I would not lie about such things."

Albert looks around at the crystals. "Well, yes, I agree it's pretty, but we have to remember this is a temple defiled by evil creatures and spirits. Possibly some evil god too. Besides, Raynor himself told us to head this way." He seems very confident in his arguments. "You're not saying you want to go back through the door, are you Roald?"

Puzzled by what the others are saying he stands up again. "You see, Deoring, my idea is to use the crystal to make a holy charm for Asha, so that she can feel emboldened by Raynor's presence." He looks around for other things he could make that out of. "I guess I could use a rock instead? It doesn't seem like a fitting vessel for it though."

Every step you take is hampered by the small (by comparison) crystal structures growing on every surface, including the floor. None of the carpet of tiny spikes break under your careful feet --this time-- but there is a noise like nails on a chalkboard as they receive pressure.
May 14, 2022 11:37 am
- Albert -

Asha's belief --based in your real use of demonstrable power-- is at odds with her experience. She almost points out that 'priest lie all the time', but neither wants to offend you, nor lump you in with those charlatan types.

"No! Don't break them." She cries, looking around in awe again, but this is based purely on her feelings of insignificance compared to the splendour of the surroundings.
May 16, 2022 4:47 pm
While the others debate whether to break a crystal or not Orset is studying one of the crystals with wide eyes. All my time underground.. never seen something like this.. beautiful.. He breaks from his gaze and turns to look at Deoring and Asha in turn. "I've never been much of a religious man, but I'm with Albert... What was it? Raynor?.. Yes, Raynor led us here... Must be for a reason, maybe the rocks will hold something we can use against the undead."

After saying his piece, he starts to inspect the crystal lined walls for any other exits or hidden features in the room.

The cave you are in is large. It is hard to tell how large with all the weird reflections when the light hits the surface of a crystal and makes your image loom back at you, all distorted and strangely proportioned.

How far do you wander in your explorations?
May 16, 2022 5:12 pm
"We should try to take a break while we can." The captain says pragmatically.

"Does anyone know how long we have been down here? It feels like we just had breakfast, but I am hungry." It feels to all of you like it has been a few hours --at most-- but you are all hungry and thirsty as though you have spent the whole day trudging with no sustenance.

Did you have breakfast? It is hard to remember with all the excitement this morning.

"Does anyone still have water?" The captain asks, weighing her own waterskin --that she had been so generously passing around earlier-- with an expression of concern.

"No." Asha shakes her head having drunk all hers in the tunnel before the skeleton room.
May 17, 2022 4:09 am
"I still have some water left."

He holds out his waterskin out.

"Would you like some, Captain? Asha, how about you?"

"I also have a few rations."
May 17, 2022 5:44 am
''I too have some water'' Roald takes his waterskin and weighs it in his hand. It feels light. ''ohw... '' It seems like there is only a small amount left, far less than he thought there would be.''This is going to be a problem. Looks like our next goal is to find a watersource.''

''Albert, if you are up to it, I could do with a little healing. I still don't feel so great''
May 17, 2022 7:07 am
Albert gives a little sigh. "Alright, if you're not inclined to break the crystals, let's skip that idea for now." He checks his backpack and remembers he doesn't have any more water either. "Hmm, I'll all out of water as well. No pun intended." He can't help but have a little chuckle to himself at that one. A little humor can do wonders in a tense situation. While he's looking, he grabs a bit of dried meat to chew on.

"Sure, Roald, let me see what I can do." Albert gets up again and walks over to Roald to try and help him with his wounds. He puts a hand on Roald's shoulder and looks up to the ceiling. "Raynor, you who has guided us to this wondrous cave, channel your power through me so that I may aid a friend in pain. For we have still a long road ahead of us with your mission in mind."

Asha gratefully accepts your water and takes a large and thirsty swig.

"Small sips." The captain says sternly. "And go sparing. We don't know how long that is going to need to last us."
May 17, 2022 3:36 pm
Upon hearing about rest, Orset turns back to join them and rummages through his pack on the way. He finds only a scrap of ration and just enough water for one last drink. "Looks like I'm running low too..." He nods to Albert and Roald. "If we get out of this room alive, then that must be our next priority."

Crouching down for a moment Orset feels the dryness of his throat and a slight rumble in his stomach and sighs as he starts to consume the last bits of his ration and drinks his last portion of water.

Albert smiles, seeing that Raynor once again was there for them. It felt nice to him, knowing there's a higher entity watching over them. "I hope you feel better, Roald. Would you mind sharing a sip of your water? My throat is still killing me."

"Maybe if we walk down this cave, we can find a water source. Orset, do you think a cave like this could hold a spring or something like that?" He turns to Orset when talking. "If all else fails, we do know there's water at the stairs where we came in." Albert goes back to where he left his things, but stops before picking them up. "Do you want to rest here first?" His question is directed at the captain, who brought up being unsure of the time.
May 18, 2022 7:45 pm
Deoring breaks off a piece of his hard tack and hands it to Asha, saying, "Asha, have some of my rations."

She hands him back his waterskin, then takes his offered food.

He chews the last of his food himself, takes a sip of water, then when he sees Asha has finished chewing, says to her, "Isn’t it amazing how Raynor has been helping us?"
May 18, 2022 7:54 pm
- Deoring -

"Oh, yes!" Asha gushes at your enthusiasm. She indicates a desire for for water again after the dry rations.

"Raynor will keep us safe down here." She declares, and you recall that she was the first to volunteer to follow Albert despite her obvious fear and near-constant state of panic at times when she was being 'kept safe'. Her belief is strong, even if it is just belief in Raynor and not in herself.
May 18, 2022 9:06 pm
Deoring takes one more sip, then hands his waterskin to Asha. "Here, take the last of it."

"Yes, may Raynor protect us all!"
May 18, 2022 9:13 pm
- Deoring -

Asha glances guiltily in the captain's direction before quickly finishing off the last of the water and giving you a shy smile.

"Yes." She declares confidently. "He will! We are on his quest. We can not fail!"

Her triumphant voice echoes back from the hard faces of the crystals: "... fail ... fail ... fail ... fail"
May 19, 2022 2:55 pm
A warm glow fills Roald's body from head to toe, followed by a tingling sensation. '' Praise Raynor! And thank you Albert! Here take my waterskin, it's not much but it will help your dry throat. Let take some rest and then go on a search for water. ''

The captain contemplates Albert's question for a few moments before replying.

"I think we are all tired." She suggests. "But also probably getting dehydrated?" She looks worried. "Both make people make stupid decisions." She explains. "Not that I am saying anyone has." She adds, not wanting sound like she is criticising.

"We can't go back out there," she motions to the door you came through. "There are skeletons out there... and also in the water by the stairs." She looks around the crystal clean cave. "I would much rather drink from something I found in here, than out there, anyway, don't you agree?

"But this looks like a safe place." She sounds dubious, but it is as 'safe' as you have found so far. "If we don't rest now, we might not get another chance. Not too long though, and let's conserve water." Asha looks guilty at this, and quickly passes the empty skin back to Deoring.
OOC:
What do you want to do?
May 19, 2022 8:55 pm
"Yes, of course. If we can avoid having to deal with skeletons to get water, we should take that option." Albert agrees with the captain after taking a few sips from Roald's water skin and then handing it back. "Thank you, Roald."

"As for sleeping here, I know that Raynor told me to go through the door. I just don't know how far in the place is that he wants me to find." He takes some time to think about things while waiting for the other to weigh in on the subject.
May 20, 2022 2:34 pm
Orset listens to the captain and Albert before adding his thoughts. "It's always possible there will be another water source ahead, but I have never seen anything like this." He motions to the crystals all around them. "I agree that going back must be a last resort, so I hope we find a way forward... and if we sleep here maybe we should set up watches just in case?"
May 20, 2022 2:47 pm
"I really don't want to sleep by this door with skeletons right on the other side." Asha says quietly, glancing at the captain who nods her agreement. She had meant 'rest' 'for a short time' more than 'sleep', but would not argue if the group decided to extend that.

Asha's comment draws your attention to the door, and the fact that you have not heard any sound from what is on the other side since you closed it. The comparative dark on the other side means you can't see anything through the cracks either.

What do you do?
May 20, 2022 6:00 pm
"While I agree, sleeping by the door is a scary thought, if those things are trying to get in, we'd wake up from the noise." Albert offers this opinion to Asha. "But if we move further down the cave, we might not notice them opening the door and coming in until it's too late." He looks pretty confident about this observation.

"We only need to watch one side of the tunnel here." He looks around, to check if any of those exploding puffy mushrooms are to be seen.
OOC:
If there are no mushrooms here, we can use torches again.
May 21, 2022 3:17 am
Deoring says, "Albert, that makes so much sense! Have you done this before? Have you cleansed other temples for Raynor?"

He lights one of his remaining torches.

The golden light of your torch lances outwards and then back from every crystal within sight. It is dazzlingly bright and all your eyes immediately start to water.

"Gah!" The captain exclaims, burying her face in the crook of her arm. "Put it out!"

'...out ... out ... out' the echos say in return.
May 21, 2022 8:58 am
Roald shields his eyes with his sleeve. ''wohw, looks like we'll get by with only a spark''
'' I'm fine with resting instead of sleeping, Albert's healing gave me some new energy. If anyone Wants to take a quick nap, I'll stand guard.''
May 21, 2022 7:21 pm
"Oooh, that is bright." Albert says when the torch is lit. He closes his eyes and basks in the warmth of the flame for a minute.

"I can't say that I have, Deoring. I've read a book about it once, but I think that might have been a fictional tale." He smiles in a friendly way. "I just thought it made sense."

Albert rubs his eyes, he's looking pretty tired out. That coughing fit took a lot out of him. "I wouldn't mind resting for maybe half an hour or an hour."
May 22, 2022 5:21 am
Momentarily blinded by the light reflecting off the crystals, Deoring quickly douses his torch.

"Ehm, sorry, Captain. Everyone." Deoring mumbles, blushing and looking down at his feet.

He wonders, How can I be so stupid! Once again he’s embarrassed himself in front of the Captain. I know I can do this… why do I keep messing up?
May 22, 2022 5:29 am
Deoring sits down a few feet away from everyone and rests his head on his knees, stewing.
OOC:
I don’t think he’ll sleep, he’s too upset with himself for lighting his torch and annoying everyone, especially the Captain. But he will at least sit down to rest. And I’m not suggesting he’s going far away from the group, just making it clear that he wants to be alone for now. He’s glad Roald offered to stand watch, even if he didn’t tell him so.
May 22, 2022 11:16 am
Roald positions himself on the floor with his back against the door. The tiny but sharp crystals feel like needles in his butt.
''AUCH, damnit'' He folds his cloak as a pillow. ''ah, that's better. Be careful where you sit or lay down, some of these crystals have nasty spikes!''
May 22, 2022 3:24 pm
"It's OK." The captain says consolingly to Deoring. "Now we have learned something, which is always good. And no harm done." It looks like she is about to go over and comfort him, but, seeing his body language, she decides to leave him alone.

Instead she follows Roald's lead and bundles a cushion to sit on, and tries to watch out in a different direction, but her head soon dips and a quiet snoring emanates from her position. Staying awake when not moving is going to be hard.

What do you do?
May 22, 2022 10:42 pm
Albert sits back down and tries to get comfortable on the rough floor. "Ooh.. Auch... Yikes... Hmm, mhm ... Ah, there." After some fidgeting, he finds a good spot. "I'm just going to rest my eyes for a minute."

He goes very quiet, only still creating sound by breathing. It's safe to say he's asleep.
May 24, 2022 4:53 am
As upset as he feels, Deoring is more exhausted than he realized and slips off to sleep, snoring lightly.
May 25, 2022 3:47 am
Deoring, to everyone and no one in particular, "Zzzzzzzz."
May 26, 2022 7:45 am
Roald watches his companions fall to sleep one after the other. ''Sleep well my friends, I'll watch over you'' he whispers.

The smooth sounds of breathing and light snoring has a soothing effect and after 15 minutes his eyelids become heavy, everytime he blinks it takes longer for them to get back up.

May 26, 2022 2:45 pm
You all awaken feeling refreshed, but very hungry and desperately thirsty.

Roald, you can't tell if you are still athletically challenge or if it is just the hunger, for now the bane persists.

It is a little while before someone notices that Asha is missing and not responding to any calls you may put out.

Who notices her absence?

What do you all do?
May 26, 2022 7:43 pm
Albert rubs his eyes as he awakens. He looks next to him and picks up his broom stick. The familiar feeling of holding it soothes his mind. Then his stomach growls loudly.

"Sorry about that. I seem to be quite hungry. I'm sure finding some water would help a bit." He looks around at all the others, some of which are just now opening their eyes. "I think I dozed off, Roald. How long was I out? And did anything happen?" He doesn't yet notice that Asha is missing.
May 27, 2022 4:21 am
Deoring opens his eyes and stretches the kinks out of his neck. All of the madness of fighting skeletons and a giant centipede comes rushing back to him at once. "Oh!" Now he’s suddenly quite awake and on edge, looking around.

Seeing everyone at ease starts to calm him back down, until he realizes Asha is not in sight. I was just talking with her, he thinks, where could she be? Well, I guess I did nod off. I wonder how long it’s been?

"Ca.. Captain? Ehm, where did Asha go?"

As soon as the words are out of his mouth, Deoring’s cheeks turn bright red, as a thought crosses his mind, I bet she needed privacy to pee! THINK before you speak to the Captain!
May 27, 2022 7:55 am
When he hears voices Roald abruptly awakens.

'' oh ...'' I'm sorry everyone, I must have fallen to sleep too. So stupid of me''
His mouth feels dry while he speaks. Ashamed of not being able to stay awake, he quickly gets on his feet. Eager to make things right.
'' Asha gone? She can't be far, I'll take a quick look around.''

Roald moves further into the cave, making sure he doesn't loose sight of the group. He is looking for signs of Asha passing through. Maybe some broken pieces of crystal?
May 27, 2022 8:06 am
Asha had been rather conscientious about cleaning off her boots when you first got into this sparkling clean area. Now that is a detriment since she has not left the nice, obvious, dirty footprints that the rest of you who were not as diligent are leaving.

Given her concern over breaking crystals 'last night', it is not surprising that she has apparently taken pains to avoid doing so now. Picking up her trail will not be easy.

The area around where you were sleeping has fallen silent, the cave appears to have adjusted to your presence and maybe warmed up a bit. As the first of you move away into new areas the tinkling sounds start again.

The captain says a bad word, and looks set to call out for Asha.

What do you do?
May 27, 2022 10:36 pm
"Asha?" Albert calls out, but there is no response. "That can't be a good sign." He adds, somewhat worried. "We should go look for her. Hopefully Raynor is keeping an eye on her as well."

The urgent matter of finding Asha, quickly banishes the concerns about food and water to the back of Albert's mind. "Do you see anything, Roald?"
May 27, 2022 11:49 pm
When the echo of Albert's loud words fades, Roald responds quietly.

''No,... No sign of anyone passing through here. This doesn't look good.''

If only I didn't fell asleep... This is my fault, I have to find her.

Roald is really beating himself up over this. He turns around and walks back to the group.

''Let's get going, there's no use in staying here any longer''

"... sha ... sha ... ha ha ha... aa ... AAH! ..." The echo comes back, seeming to find a resonance in the end and get louder and more desperate before suddenly consuming itself.

"Daft girl." The captain says --with more affection than ridicule. "It is so like her to wander off. I promised her mother I would look after her."

She hastily gathers her possessions --looking forlornly at her empty water-skin-- prepares to move out. "Which way?" She asks no one in particular.
The cave shape is hard to map out, all the reflecting surfaces regularly make it seem there is a corridor which then ends with your nose pressed against a sudden image of yourself.

What do you do? How do you decide on direction, or try to keep to it once you do?
May 29, 2022 1:16 am
'' How about this: we stick to the right side wall and start looking for corridors until we are back here. When we've got a good idea how many options there are, we choose one of them. We could also fan out and do the search, but I would hate for someone else to get lost. So in my opinion we should stick together. Pay extra close attention to sounds of water, if Asha went out on her own, that could be something that influenced her decision.''
OOC:
I am imagining the space we are in now as a big room/hall with (maybe) multiple exits, but they are hard to see with all the reflections of the crystals
May 29, 2022 1:57 am
The captain nods when Roald suggests not splitting up. "This place is too confusing." She agrees. "I fear someone could be right on the other side of one of these 'mirrors' and we would not know or be able to get to them." She peers at her distorted reflection and then looks away with a shudder.

At the mention of water as Asha's motivation, she shakes her head in confusion. "That makes no sense. Why would she not just tell someone? She knows I would have gone with her for a, um, 'call of nature'." As the only lady in the party the complications of toileting while not going off alone is a thing the captain is trying not to think about just yet --the lack of drinking has its benefits.

"What possessed her to wander off like that?" She demands angrily. "And why is she not answering?" She calls for the girl again, but is only answered be the same disconcertingly altered echoes.

The captain sighs, resigned to following Roal's 'stick to the walls' plan unless someone else has objections or 'better' suggestions.
The door you came in through stands like a blight on the otherwise pristine and beautiful crystals. Crystals that have grown up in the center of the cave as well as on the walls, resulting in a twisting turning set of tunnels, all alike.
May 29, 2022 3:02 pm
"Yes, that sounds like a good plan, Roald. Let's do it that way. We can use our weapons to prod at the walls to find openings." Albert reaches out to touch one of the crystals, feeling the spiky tip and a sharp edge here and there. "I wouldn't want to get a cut on my hand from these things."

I wonder if Asha did this to prove herself useful. She was a bit disheartened earlier. He uses his broom stick as a walking cane as well as a tool to check the walls for corridors, following Roald's footsteps. "Raynor, I hope you are watching over Asha, wherever she may have wandered off to." He says quietly to himself yet loud enough for someone close to hear.

While traversing the cavern, Albert tries to pay close attention to the floor. Not just because he doesn't want to lose his footing, but maybe there's a clue to be found. A bit of Asha's hair, a coin or a ring maybe?
May 30, 2022 12:47 am
- Albert -

The crystals creak and groan under your feet. Your footprints stop leaving dirty patches quite quickly as the detritus of the other room is knocked off, but dropping a hair --or something-- shows that that disturbance to the passage of light is visible from quite a distance away. Though it is hard to triangulate position with all the refractions and reflections, it will hopefully help let you know if you are in the ballpark area of any such dropped evidence Asha has left behind.
May 31, 2022 4:12 am
Deoring follows close behind Albert, still wondering at the sparkling crystals, still a little disoriented from dozing off then waking up abruptly, worried about Asha. Asha, who like himself, was a new follower of Raynor.

OOC:
Oh, I didn’t pick up on that Asha’s faith wasn’t as constant although I did realize that she was scared in this temple/cave. Maybe Deoring’s a little naïve and assumes that of course she must believe in Raynor because of the miracles that they’ve all witnessed. I’m not sure he’d have noticed that she didn’t notice her axe was glowing or that it was glowing faintly. I mean, hey, GLOWING weapons, am I right?

Deoring was talking with her and shared his water and rations with her before he dozed off, then was missing when he woke up, so she’s top of mind.

Slowly, Albert makes his way forwards along the cavern edge till he pokes his broom stick sideways and doesn't feel a wall there. "Hey, everyone, I think I may have found a branching tunnel." He carefully moves towards the opening to check his theory, picks up a small pebble from the ground and throws it towards the opening to try and judge the size of it, based on the sound of it hitting the floor.

"I think it might be large enough to walk through." He says to the others. "Asha? Are you in here?" In a regular speaking voice, he calls out, hoping to hear Asha.

- Albert -

"here" The answer comes back and you think you see someone ahead and off to the side, but both the reply and the image turn out to be nothing but reflections reflections.

As you turn away, out of the corner of your eye, the irregularities in the crystal surface cause the hand to move and it almost looks like the man in the mirror is motioning for you to come over to his side.
Jun 1, 2022 2:25 pm
"Oh, Asha, I'm glad you're..." Albert notices that Asha is not there. "Oh, never mind. It was a distorted reflection." He looks away and seems to spot movement. He blinks and looks again. Did I just imagine that reflection moving? I'm sure I hadn't moved my hand. "Be careful, everyone, these crystals don't just make it hard to see where you're going, they are messing with my head."

Based on 'last night', it takes a long time for the temperature-induced tinkling of the crystals to fade, so you have to listen very hard to hear anything over that. You are sure you hear whispered voices, but they don't seem to come from a the same direction each time, or maybe they come from all directions.

It is almost like the 'voices' are coming from the crystals, but that is crazy thinking, it is probably just them settling as they warm.

What do you do?

The silence draws Albert's attention to the crystals showing his reflection. He leans in to get a closer look, using the dim light on his staff to try and see better. These things are so strange. He taps it with a finger, touching his own reflection.
Jun 4, 2022 6:57 am
- Albert -

The staff in the mirror appears like a thin, dark slash across the brightness surrounding the image of the man who is not you. It seems to be sucking in all the light that enters the crystal.

As your finger touches the outstretched digit of the reflection, you feel a small jolt, and there is a buzzing sensation below what you can't hear through the air.

What do you do?

Albert whispers to his strange reflection. "Hello?"

The distortions on the reflected mouth turn that 'hello' into "Help...", the eyes look pleading.

Everyone stops walking for a moment after Roald’s request for quiet. In the silence, Deoring stops in his tracks and strains his ears, holds his breath, and turns his head back and forth. He listens intently, trying to hear Asha’s footsteps or a trickle of water. It reminds him of playing hide and seek as a kid, when he’d stand still and listen to hear his friends breathing or sometimes giggling, thus revealing where they were hiding. He was really good at finding them.

Raynor, light my way, he silently prays.

From far away, further down this passage, and to the right you can just make out the sound of Asha's voice. She appears to be having a conversation, though you can only hear her side of it.

Something about this feels very wrong.
Jun 4, 2022 10:18 pm
"Captain! I hear Asha voice!

Deoring hushes the others as they react to his announcement.

"Shhh! I… it sounds like she is talking to someone. I can’t quite make out what she’s saying, but it’s Asha, I’m sure of it!" he says.

"Quick, down this passage to the right. Asha may be in danger."
Jun 5, 2022 9:20 am
Albert looks up when he hears Deoring mentioning Asha, and follows him down the side passage. While walking he tells everyone "There's something odd about these crystals. I looked at one and it was like another person inside the crystal was calling out for help." He's silent for a bit, the adds. "Am I going crazy?"
Jun 5, 2022 10:35 am
Roald follows along, he also tries to hear the voice Deoring is talking about but doesn't hear anything besides the tinkle of the crystals.
He is doing his utmost best to remember the way they are going, just in case they need to go back in a hurry.

''Please, slow down a bit Deoring, I don't want somebody to get hurt smashing into a wall or pointy ceiling''
Jun 7, 2022 4:09 am
Deoring slows down and then stops. When the rest catch up, he says, "Stand still and be quiet for a moment. Listen."
Jun 7, 2022 11:57 am
"If Asha's is in danger we have to hurry!" The captain says, though she knows she is being irrational, and slow down a bit she not stop striding in the indicated direction.
Jun 7, 2022 6:17 pm
"Hang on, captain." Albert looks at Deoring who is trying his very hardest to hear Asha through the noise of people walking and crystals chirping. "Deoring seems to be the only one with hearing good enough to find her. Let's give him just half a minute to find Asha's trail."
Jun 7, 2022 7:14 pm
The captain growls in frustration, but nods in agreement. "Yes, yes. You are right." She mutters, appreciating the reasonableness and coming to a halt and holding her breath.

By this stage, anyone with decent hearing can hear that a whispered, one-sided conversation is happening, but not the details.
Jun 8, 2022 4:09 am
''I can hear it now, but it sounds so... Calm, like she's not afraid'' While Roald speaks these words he feels his nervous haste flow away. He starts turning his head around to get a better point of 'sound' .
It seems to him the sound is coming from the walls. He takes out his sword and puts the tip against the wall, the pummel against his ear.
Jun 8, 2022 6:50 am
- Roald -

The material of the sword carries the sound much better than the air. While it also carries --and amplifies-- the creaking tension of the adjusting crystals, behind that racket you think you can hear a 'voice' --definitely not Asha's voice-- which seems to be saying: "Release me."

Jun 10, 2022 6:05 pm
Albert turns to Roald. "I saw a weird reflection in the crystals too. It seemed like it was begging me about something. That must be the same person you heard." He looks around at all the crystals. "Maybe that's why Raynor lead us here. Someone in need of saving."
Jun 11, 2022 1:33 am
Deoring speaks up, "Let’s press on, then, if both Asha and someone else need saving. It sounds like Asha, at least, is down here on the right."
Jun 11, 2022 2:28 pm
After a brief confusion due to reflected light and sound sending you the wrong way on the last turn, you round a corner and see Asha crouching up ahead, she appears to be trying to console or placate someone you can not see --someone in the crystal, you can assume, given your discoveries. You see her making a downward motion with her hand and can possibly make out the words "...patient...".

Asha does not appear to have noticed you yet.

What do you do?
Jun 11, 2022 4:09 pm
"Asha? Is everything alright, dear?" Albert asks calmly. He watches the crystals around him for any signs of movement.
Jun 11, 2022 4:14 pm
Startled, Asha stands up from her crouched position, her mouth moves for a moment then she says hesitantly: "Um... I thought I saw someone in the crystal... it looked... like me?

"What is going on?"
She asks, her voice sounding strange as she looks nervously at the reflection.
Jun 11, 2022 4:45 pm
"Yes, we saw and heard them too. What did they tell you?" Albert is a bit weary because of Asha's odd sounding voice.
OOC:
is there a way for Albert to do some sort of medical check of Asha on a spiritual level? To see if her soul is alright with Raynor's help.
Jun 11, 2022 7:41 pm
After slowly walking over to Asha, Albert puts a hand on her shoulder. "Are you alright?" He says to her softly.

With his hand touching her shoulder, Albert tries to invoke Raynor's power and knowledge to make a spiritual connection with Asha's soul. The strange feeling he got from Asha's words trouble him.
Jun 11, 2022 9:45 pm
Seeing that Albert is tending to Asha, Deoring steps up to the closest wall and peers closely into the crystals, looking and listening intently and carefully.
Jun 12, 2022 3:45 am
Roald stands next to Albert, waiting for Asha to answer.
Jun 12, 2022 8:52 am
- Albert -

"What are you doing?" Ahsa says, prevented from pulling away by the crystal at her back.

When the hand settles on her shoulder, she looks a little less tense, and you recall several hints from earlier conversations where she used words like 'groped' to describe the contact the night before.

You feel no connection with Raynor at all, but what that means is harder to interpret. You also get the strong impression that she really wants to leave this place, and does not want to be around the crystals.

"Um... don't talk to the... whatever... is in the crystals." She says, sounding worried. "I think they tried to trick me? I can't quite remember. But don't believe a word they say."
Jun 12, 2022 9:18 am
''I too heard a voice Asha, it said 'release me' but nothing more. Were you able to communicate with it?''
Jun 12, 2022 10:08 am
"I... I think so?" Ahsa says. "It is confusing...."

She takes a step away from Albert's hand while considering her answer.

"Yes. It wants to get out." She agrees. "It tried to trick me into 'releasing' it. I think it did something to my mind." She looks uncomfortable at this last bit.

"Don't talk to it!" She repeats more urgently.
Jun 12, 2022 10:16 am
Albert is confused by the lacking of connection between Asha and Raynor. He's been protecting my friends throughout this temple. Why would he forsake Asha?

If there were a way to see if Asha's axe is still glowing, he would know more. But the brightness of these crystals make that difficult, if not impossible, to notice.

When Asha talks about the person in the crystals he responds "Should we not try and save this person? I believe maybe Raynor sent us here for just that reason. Though, I have to admit, the mind tricks you speak of worry me."

"Don't talk to it!" Ahsa repeats, the fear and desperation at this idea barely controlled in her voice.
Jun 14, 2022 7:51 am
Asha is clearly shaken up by the voice, her anxiety creeps into Roald's mind too. He opens his mouth to say something and notices the dryness of his lips and tongue. The search and find for Asha made them forget about the urgency to fill there canteens.

''Is the voice especially strong in this place? Or can we move along while we debate our next step?'' he says with a dry throat.

You see a distorted reflection of yourself and the others.

Asha's reflection it waving its hands around --just like her excite real-world counterpart-- but not quite in time. It really does appear like it is trying to reach out and grasp you.

What do you do?
Jun 15, 2022 12:47 pm
"That is strange." Deoring says to himself, looking back and forth between Asha and her distorted reflection that seems to reach out to him, drawing him closer.

Seeming to come from a long way away, he hears Asha say something about someone trying to trick her. It’s confusing… he gazes at her reflection…

"Don’t talk to it!" Asha’s plea pierces Deoring’s reverie. He shakes his head and backs away from the wall as Roald suggests moving along.

"Yes, move along." he says, still in a little bit of a daze. But he turns and faces his companions and starts moving in the direction Roald is heading.
Jun 15, 2022 1:00 pm
Albert backs away from Asha. She's acting strangely and he needs a second opinion. As he gets to Deoring, he leans closer and talks quietly so Asha wouldn't be able to hear. "Deoring, there's something strange going on with Asha. I could not sense a connection between her and Raynor when I focused. For some reason, Raynor has left her side and I can't figure out why. What do you think that could mean?"

He looks over his shoulder to see if Asha noticed their conversation. Looks like Roald has her distracted with a question. When Albert feels it's safe, he continues. "She's also acting quite strangely when we talk about the crystals. Have you noticed anything?"
Jun 16, 2022 4:22 am
Deoring turns to Albert and says,

"Yes, I was just looking into the wall of crystals over there and saw Asha’s reflection but it wasn’t exactly her reflection. It didn’t quite match her movements… it was distorted… it seemed to be gesturing to me, to be reaching out to me. It was quite eerie.

I don’t understand what’s happening but this doesn’t feel right. Have you ever seen anything like this?"
Jun 16, 2022 1:23 pm
Albert ponders for a bit and thinks back to his studies as an initiate at the temple. He did read some books there, but did any of them mention crystals? He's unsure about it.

After a bit of thinking, Albert calls Roald and the captain over, then he replies to Deoring.
"I remember reading about something that might be related in a book about religious law. Don't ask me where or when this happened, but there is record of a group of priests working together, long ago, to banish an otherworldly being from their lands. This being had been terrorizing cities for weeks and no military force had been able to stop it. The priests, who were disciples of different Gods, focused their conduit powers together to create chains of divine energy. After a long struggle, the being surrendered to the strength of the priests and their godly chains." He takes a small pause to breathe.

"It is written that Raynor himself came down and sentenced the being to imprisonment within a Gemstone-like crystal." He looks around to try and read the faces of his companions.

"Now I'm not saying that this is that being, but if this is the same type of imprisonment crystal, we should find out why this person is stuck in it and why Raynor wanted us to be here." He makes the face of a person weighing options. "Or we could assume the person in the crystal is bad and ignore it, like Asha wants us to."

Albert then waits to see what his companions think about all this.
Jun 16, 2022 5:21 pm
At the word 'terrorising' Ahsa bristles and it looks for a moment like she wants to argue, but then she clams her mouth shut until the last.

"Very bad," she agrees. "'twould be best for us to ignore it."

She has been thinking and now asks Albert. "Do you think it really was Rynar who did it in the end?" Pronouncing the name is a bit archaically.
Jun 17, 2022 3:07 am
OOC:
Um, has Asha been possessed? She is suddenly speaking in archaic language. "Twould?" "Rynor?" Gulp!

Deoring clears his throat. "I’m sure RAYnor wouldn’t want us to release a trapped beast! I think IT WOULD be best if we ignore it and move forward. Let’s see if we can find some water."

He keeps a close watch on Asha and will be trying to catch Albert’s attention surreptitiously and looking for an opportunity to speak to him in private about Asha.
Jun 17, 2022 3:27 am
''I'm with Deoring and, to be honest, I'm tired, thirsty and hungry. In my opinion, after what you've just told us, it's a bad thing to try and help the voice in the wall. A risk I'm not willing to take right now. Just look how it rattled Asha...''
Jun 17, 2022 11:20 am
"I don't think there is any water down here." Ahsa says, blushing slightly apologetically at the correction. "Surely we would hear it." She adds by way of explanation.

Her and the captain move aside and there is a opportunity for the men to talk.
Jun 17, 2022 2:42 pm
Deoring has a bad feeling about these crystals. The reflection not matching what he could see with his own eyes can’t be good. And what good have we found in this temple so far? Only the fire of Raynor that Albert brought with him and shared with us.

He says in a quiet voice, "Albert and Roald, I have a bad feeling about these crystals. And have you noticed that Asha sounds different? She’s using old timey language all of a sudden. Do you… do you think she’s possessed?"
Jun 17, 2022 4:37 pm
"Oh no! Do you think so?" Albert says in a worried voice. "Yes, she had been acting differently. Let me try something."
OOC:
perhaps more is said between this and my next action.
After talking to Roald and Deoring, he walks over to Asha. "Say, Asha, I still have that bone you found in my backpack, do you want it back?" Trying to see if Asha is still terrified of bones or not. If she doesn't freak out, it's definitely a different Asha.
Jun 17, 2022 5:18 pm

"Eww!" Ahsa exclaims. "Why would you still have that?" She sounds confused about what bone you are talking about, and her eyes narrow at the suggestion of your giving it to her.

"Throw it away!" She says indignantly.

Albert tries to gauge Asha's reaction. She seems to be responding like the real Asha. Maybe she's not possessed, like Deoring seems to think. But why the disconnect with Raynor? "Oh no, I just remembered I did throw it into the water at the stairs. My apologies." He says to try and cover up his test.

Looking to the others, he offers "Shall we keep going then? Try and find some water somewhere."

"Maybe we all are, Roald. We've all been seeing and hearing things. What if it's all just the lack of water?" Albert replies, with worry in his voice, to Roald's remark.

"Who of us in the best navigator? We know we've seen water before at the stairs. One of these tunnels must head in that direction, right?" He looks around at the group, then starts to mumble a bit. "Let's see, we came in after a turn to the left, then we went through the door, .... Maybe it's roughly that way?" Albert points straight at a wall with no entrance and sighs deeply.

Albert blilnks. "Uhm... Is that another delusion?" He says, staring at the wall where Asha disappeared. "Asha? Where did you go?"
Jun 20, 2022 4:36 pm
Roald, being in front of the party, is the first to reach the place where Asha disappeared. He starts probing the wall (gently) with his sword.
''ASHA! AH ah ah ah ah''
Jun 20, 2022 4:42 pm
"What?" Ahsa says impatiently, her head reappearing around the corner right by where Roald is poking. Knowing she is there you can almost make out her torso behind the crystal wall, but the passage she walked into is invisible without the clue of her 'floating' head.

This environment is hard to navigate, but she seems to be managing by just walking and not over thinking things.
Jun 20, 2022 6:03 pm
Roald sighs very loud. '' We thought you were lost again, please wait for us next time, you seem to be extraordinarily good at finding your way in this maze of mirrors''
He looks around and sees relief on everybody's faces.
''shall we move on? Lead the way Asha!''

"Asha wait for us! Let’s all hold hands so we don’t get separated." says Deoring.
Jun 21, 2022 2:37 am

Albert follows with cautious curiosity
Jun 21, 2022 12:25 pm
By seemingly just plowing on forwards Ahsa somehow makes good headway, her ability to spot and step into the gaps between the crystals is uncanny. While she does not noticeably touch them, you all have a hard time keeping up while avoiding getting small cuts from the sharp edges as you are pulled along in her wake.

You travel a fair distance in the direction suggested earlier --though the constant twists and turns and same-looking surfaces make it impossible to know for sure-- and, after what feels like surprisingly little time --though your thirst has grown-- you find yourself before another dark spot on the wall and ceiling, the crystal covering giving way to bare stone.

There is a trapdoor above the stair, it is tightly closed, and feels cold to the touch. Brushing it, your fingertips come away with the slightest suggestion of dampness.

Ahsa stares at the closed door, frowning in frustration. "How do we open it?" She asks, her ability to find progress stymied when the crystals run out.

What do you do?

Using your staff, you can easily reach the trapdoor from the ground. It sounds like it is made of metal, and looks like, maybe, copper.

The captain moves to help heave, and Ahsa steps onto a higher stair to reach, jamming her bosom in your face in a way you find thoughtless, disturbing, and out of character.

"It feels like there is something heavy on top of it." The captain complains as it moves the smallest amount before stopping springily. "If we all work together we should be able to shift it."

"Raynor, give us strength!" And water. Albert also puts in his last bit of reserves.
Jun 22, 2022 3:58 pm
And water there is!

Though probably not a gift of Raynor.
The plug --for that is what it was-- is swirled and lifted from your hands as the tons of water that was trapped in the stairwell forces its way past, sweeping you all off your feet and back into the crystal cavern. The crystal's glow is smeared with greasy, foul-smelling gunk --one small glowing mushroom bobbing along in a puddle-- the height of the covering diminishes the further from the door it gets.

After the water recedes, some slimy bones are left scattered across the floor, along with other unidentifiable, slime-covered items that were in the stairway above.

Your clothes are soaked through, and it is cold. The captain makes to wring some of the water from her shirt into her mouth but spits it out.

"Yuck!" She says. "Maybe we should go up above and look for a river?"

Deoring climbs down and steps back a few strides, then shakes himself off like a dog in an attempt to get at least some of the foul water off of him. Trying not to splatter his comrades.

"You've got to be kidding me!" Albert says when he manages to stand up again. Scrapes and bruises on his legs from the crystals. "Is this your idea of a joke, Raynor?" He yells up at the ceiling.

He looks up into the hole, trying to figure out what kind of area they're getting into now. "I guess that's the next step." He replies to the captain. He sighs. "My clothes are ruined."
Jun 24, 2022 1:14 am
Apparently not caring about her ruined clothes, Ahsa struggles to her feet and sloshes over to look up the stairwell. "I feel a breeze!" She exclaims as though this is the most amazing thing.

With that --slightly over-dramatic statement-- she starts going up, again not waiting for the rest of you unless you remind her to.

Deoring moves back towards the stairs, ready to follow Albert up.
Jun 24, 2022 5:03 am
Roald is angry and disappointed, this foul water is undrinkable. He undresses (not fully) and tries to dry his clothes as good as possible before putting them on again.
When he hears about the breeze his mood slightly brightens and he intents to follow Ahsa up the stairs.
OOC:
Roald will probably be last.
OOC:
is it Asha or Ahsa... Did I read it wrong the whole time??
Jun 25, 2022 2:20 am
Ahsa squeezes past the plug-door left ajar by the deluge and races on ahead up the stairs, slipping and sliding and falling on the slimy residue left behind by years of trapped water, but not caring about the barked shins, or the dark after the brightness of the crystals.

If you are following her, after a short time you arrive back out of the 'well' at the moss-covered, 'shroom-illuminated door. Ahsa stops to glance in, but rejects that route and continues up, following the breeze. When she reaches the window overlooking the roof, she stops and stares, leaning out and revelling in the sensation of sunlight and wind.

She starts to clamber out onto the roof, but then lets out a short scream and tumbles backwards into the stairwell. "Those horrible stone things attacked me!" She exclaims fearfully, turning back to seek out the door to the ground level.

What do you do?
Jun 25, 2022 1:22 pm
Deoring looks frightened, but says, "Albert, if we truly are to cleanse this place, I think we need to go up to the roof and see what’s there."
Jun 25, 2022 10:56 pm
"You might be right, Deoring" Albert replies. "But hang on. Raynor sent us here, and I think I may have an idea to get some water for us."

He takes a few minutes to try and wring his clothes out, so he's at least not dripping wet anymore. "It's cold here." He says, slightly shivering. Then he grabs his empty water skin and fills it with the dirty water that he can find in a puddle nearby. When the bag is full, he sits down on the steps of the stairs. "Give me a few minutes, I don't know if this will work."

Albert thinks back to his time at the temple, where they used to say a prayer before their meals. This prayer would sanctify the food and drink in Raynor's name. Perhaps this will cleanse the filth from the water, if I try hard enough.

"Deoring, will you help me bless this water? If so, please put your hand on the water skin and repeat my prayer." He focuses on the water with eyes closed as he begins a prayer to Raynor.

"Bless us, Raynor, hear our prayer
Ye who lives up in the air
To you, we dedicate this feast
So we can still our inner beast
While we close our eyes and think
Sanctify this food and drink"

Albert: You feel the distinct sensation of... disinterest, like Raynor does not care about such petty, human things, and his attention is elsewhere. His blessed light emanating from your staff --and any other weapons, if visible-- fades, taking the light refracted through the crystals with it, leaving you in darkness as your eyes adjust.

As if in answer to the question of where Raynor's attention is, the captain shouts desperately as she charges back down the stairs: "Asha has been attacked! She is hurt! We need your help! Come Quick!"
Jun 29, 2022 6:47 am
Albert feels a sadness coming over him when he feels Raynor's indifference. He understands it, though. He had been chosen for this 'job' and, quite frankly, he's been failing.

That's when he hears the captain's call to action. "Oh no! Asha!" He grabs his staff and uses is to stand up, then he heads to the plug hole to get to where the others are. "We're coming!"

Albert heads up the stairs. This place looks familiar. Yes, this is the way we came in! But it's not as dark as he remembered it. In fact, there's a bit of light coming from upstairs. The stairs that closed on us are open again. We can get to the window. He rushes upwards to see what's going on with Asha and the captain.

Before you can make it all the way to entrance-window you come across a door that was ignored last time as it lead to the main ground-floor temple you were running away from. It is now open and you hear Ahsa swearing loudly --using the sort of language you have heard in your bar, but never thought to hear coming from her mouth.

If you enter the temple, you will see Ahsa sitting on the floor, her back against a wall, holding her side in pain. The captain --having returned when you said you were on your way-- has her sword out and is positioned just inside the door, as though to prevent someone (or something) from entering.

You can not see the attacker.

What do you do?
Jun 29, 2022 6:39 pm
Albert stops at the captain. "Is Asha okay? What happened? Who did this? Where are they?" A flurry of questions escapes his parched mouth as he looks from the captain to the hallway, up at the ceiling, around the room and back.
Jun 29, 2022 9:24 pm
"Those stone things from the roof attacked when we tried to leave." The captain sums up efficiently. "They don't seem to want to come inside." She says, indicating the trees and sunlight outside the door from the temple. "I don't think it is me stopping them, though." (They also did not follow in through the window above, but you have no way of knowing that aside from the fact that the captain is not worrying about that approach.)

"Help the girl." She orders. "We will watch for danger."
Jun 30, 2022 4:18 pm
Following the captain's orders, Albert heads to where Asha is sitting. "Are you alright? What happened?" He asks her as he tries to gauge the extent of the damage.

"It hurts!" Ahsa cries looking at you pleading to make it stop. She takes her hand away from the gash in her side, but whimpers as blood oozes out and quickly presses it back.

The blood looks clean, with no smell of offal to suggest damage to the bowel. While it coats her side and her clothes, at least it is not enough to be forming a pool below her.

At the Captain’s call for help, Deoring follows Albert up the stairs and upon hearing the Captain’s orders, joins her at the doorway to help watch for danger while Albert goes to aid Asha.

Outside the building all is serene and quiet. So quiet that, were it not for the blood, you could almost have thought the ladies were joking about an attack.

"Be careful." The captain says. "As soon as we tried to step out, they dropped down and became hostile." She is keeping well inside the building, but looking upwards as she speaks, though of course, she can not see anything through the wall and roof.
Jul 1, 2022 12:59 pm
Albert kneels down next to Asha. "I'm sorry, I should have come with you straight away, but I wanted to call out to Raynor first." He looks at the wound inflicted by the gargoyle. "I hope Raynor is still listening to me. Hold still, this might sting a bit."

With his hands pressed on Asha's hand, Albert starts to ask for help from above. "Raynor, we are in need of your aid once more. I meant not to offend you by asking for water. My parched lips only ask to bestow the divine strength of your presence upon Asha's wound, So that she may live and continue aiding your cause."

Jul 1, 2022 7:15 pm
The weight of everything that has happened so far falls on Albert's shoulders. Before he had Raynor carrying most of the load, but now a loneliness envelops him. "I... I..." He stammers, trying to tell Asha that she'll be fine. "I'm not getting an answer from Raynor." He looks lost. With his friend hurt and possibly dying, no idea what he's supposed to do in this temple and no god to fall back on, what is he to do?

"We need to get Asha to the village!" He suddenly yells in the direction of the captain.

Ahsa's eyes fill with tears at your words and your pain. "It will be alright." She says softly, patting your hand reassuringly. The intensity of her gaze as she shares your anguish seems to ease your inner turmoil.

"I am sorry that I messed up your mission." She apologises. "With the doors open, maybe we can come back after?" The lie in her voice is obvious, she has no intention of ever coming back here, but 'it is the thought that counts', right?
Jul 2, 2022 2:05 am
The captain turns group. "But how will be get past those things?" She asks desperately, glancing at her injured comrade with concern. "Can she walk?" She asks, trying to formulate a plan.

Quote:
Is there anything we could use as a shield? [ref]
You are currently in the main --above-ground-- temple building. There is a large pile of bones near the center of the room, but those closest to you have been turned to dust, revealing the stone floor and what might be a low wall or altar under the pile.

The wear on the floor indicates that at some point in the past there were rows of seats or pews, but the wood they were made of has long since rotted away, leaving no trace.

If you were extremely motivated --and maybe less tired and thirsty-- you could pry up a paving-stone or take a stone door off its hinges to use as a shield.

You can see scraps of clothing and armour amongst the bones in the pile, if you were prepared to dig in there, you might be able to find actual shields to use as shields.

There are vines on the walls just outside the open door. You know they are easy enough to climb, but you also know the grotesque statues are (or were) perched on the corners, among the vines, on the top of the walls.

What do you do?
Jul 4, 2022 8:54 pm
With Asha's comforting words, Albert snaps back to reality and the task at hand. This is no time to wallow in self-pity. Asha is badly hurt. Keep it together, Albert! He thinks to himself.

He smiles warmly, yet teary eyed, at Asha. "You didn't mess up anything, Asha. Don't even worry about it." He looks up at the captain. "Captain, can you carry Asha?" Then he turns to Roald and Deoring. "I got us into this mess, so I think I should be the distraction that gets you all out." He looks determined and not in the mood to argue. "If Raynor truly wants me to cleanse this temple, then he'd better help me get my friends to safety! We have no time to waste. Perhaps the bandit camp nearby still has some medical supplies left over."
Jul 4, 2022 9:01 pm
Roald sees the determination on Albert's face but doesn't agree.
He will follow Albert from a distance to give him aid when needed and avoid waisting time discussing his decision.
He speaks silently to Deoring.
''I will stick with Albert, you make sure Asha survives.'' We will meet you in the forest or in the camp if we are far behind''
Jul 5, 2022 7:14 am
"They only seem to attack if we try to leave." The captain comments as she glances nervously at the door before moving over to Ahsa's side.

She tries to help Ahsa stand, but the girl whimpers in pain and the blood starts to flow again. "I can't move her on my own." The captain apologises. "We will need at least two, though three would be better." She demonstrates how to cross and link hands to form a seat. "Once in the forest we can build a stretcher." She says, clearly no more keen to use the bones in the temple than the patient would be to lay in them.
Jul 6, 2022 3:47 am
Deoring realizes he has a chance to gain some respect in the Captain’s eyes. She has intimidated him and he feels like he keeps letting her down. Here’s his chance to redeem himself.

He says, "Captain, I will draw the gargoyles away from the doorway so that you and the others can carry Asha to safety." Then he draws his sword, and speaks a quiet prayer to Raynor.
Jul 6, 2022 4:58 am
"Captain, let me go out first. When you are in position and ready to lift Asha, I will step several paces to the right so that when the gargoyles drop down they will turn towards me and away from the doorway. That should leave space for you all to carry Asha out." says Deoring.

"May Raynor’s fire guide your way."
Jul 6, 2022 7:23 am
"Albert, as a healer I think you place is with the wounded. You should join the captain when she escapes"

Roald deliberately doesn't mention the fact that he is staying behind with Deoring. There has been enough discussion already.
He will stay inside the temple to rescue Deoring if such a thing is necessary.
Jul 6, 2022 8:09 am
Albert nods and helps to pick up Asha in order to carry her outside. "We should hurry, the faster we find clean water and bandages the better!" He addresses Deoring. "I'm ready. Let's do this."

Carrying Asha together, they head steadily towards the front door, and with Deoring's distraction to the edge of the woods.
OOC:

"Be careful." She says to Deoring, though a pessimist might interpret that as 'are you up for this?'.
OOC:
Deoring: How are you capturing the gargoyles' attention? How far away are you planning to draw them? Do you do anything to ensure you get them all?

Enough talking, time to take action. Deoring takes one more look at each of his companions, then turns and heads through the doorway. He glances up as he heads to the right and shouts, "Hale and well met, gargoyles! Come at me!"

The moment you step out from the door the two grotesque statues guarding the section swoop down towards you. What looked like carvings before turn out to be tiny, little stone wings, that --while they don't allow the things to fly-- slow their descent enough that they don't crash into the ground.

The arc of the statues follow looks like it will put them on your far side, between you and the forest, but close enough to attack.

Deoring has pulled the guardians away, but you have no way of knowing how long he can hold their attention for.

Do you make an immediate run for the woods, or do you give the distraction time to get more established or further away?

Roald: Do you help Albert and the captain manoeuvre Ahsa out the door and over the uneven ground outside, or do you try to help Deoring with the distraction? Both have value. Or do you wait, relying on your athleticism to dart in and help where needed most?

While I, TrailHead, thought Deoring would benefit from an improvised shield, based on your description of the environment, there was nothing obvious that would cause Deoring to think about doing something like that. His plan is simply to try to defend himself and hold the gargoyles back by parrying them with his sword.

The gargoyles are all flashing wings and slashing claws, you do your best to parry them, but can only avoid them so much while still trying to keep them engaged and distracted from your companions. They are not massively coordinated, but while blocking one, the other's claws strike you viciously in the armour, back and fourth between them.

It is eerie fighting something that looks like rock, but moves and does not make a sound. Fights are supposed to be loud and frantic, but your opponents are completely silent and methodical, not caring overly much when your sword blows strike sparks from their lichen covered 'skin'. They appear intent on finishing you as quickly as possible.

"I just need to buy a little more time so they can get Asha to safety," he tells himself. "Come. On. Uggh," he grunts as he parries the first several swipes from the eerie stone beasts.

Deoring’s heart is beating hard and loud under the strain. He can’t tell what progress the Captain and Albert have made carrying Asha to safety. He can’t turn to look - he can’t risk losing his focus.

Suddenly, a claw gets past Deoring’s defenses and rakes into his side, knocking the wind out of him. He staggers, but by the grace of Raynor, he somehow stays on his feet. He continues battling the gargoyles, but he’s beginning to realize he can’t keep this up much longer.

Seemingly as if from a long distance, he hears Roald shouting. A little dazed, it takes him a moment to realize Roald was shouting at him. "What is he saying?" Deoring wonders.

Roald shouts again, "Let’s get out of here! Follow me!"

Out of the corner of his eye, Deoring sees one of the gargoyles hop-fly towards Albert, the Captain and Asha. He freezes for just an instant, just long enough to realize that going after that gargoyle would only alert the gargoyle still with him of the others.

He yells "By Raynor’s fire!" as loud as he can and goes on the offensive against the remaining gargoyle, no longer just parrying to bide time, but hoping against all hope to kill this one. Or, failing that, to at least to recall the attention of the other gargoyle and get it to come to its companion’s aid.

The first thing that comes to mind is 'Idiot!', but only a second later he understands Deoring's incentive. There are only 2 gargoyles left, where is the third? Damnit!

Roald slows his pace just enough to let his attacker get a little bit closer. At the last moment he turns around sticking his sword out as to use the gargoyles speed and Force against itself. It's a desperate move but all he can think of at this time.

Behind you the pursuing gargoyle strikes at the captain, knocking her down in a groaning gout of blood. From the ground the captain tries to strike at it, shouting angrily to keep its attention, but it does not seem interested in her anymore and bounds over her, heading straight for you and your patient.

"Come back and face me!" The captain bellows after it. Unable to rise, she crawls, hoping her continued attempts to leave will draw it back to finish her, but to no avail.

"Run, priest! Run!" She calls a warning. She has bought you a moment, but that gargoyle will be upon you before you can reach the treeline.

It is almost like old times. With a burst of speed you outpace the flapping stone menace and feel the cool shade of the trees surround you. You are aware enough to spot, over your shoulder, how the guardian is jerked to a halt at the edge of the forest, it spends a moment trying to get through an invisible barrier, but then appears to forget about you and turns its head to your companions, first it looks at Deoring but its gaze slides over him --as though he is unimportant-- and fixates on Ahsa --you are pretty sure it is Ahsa and not Albert it is focused on-- and charges in their direction.

With you renewed speed you think you can make it round the outside to them before your gargoyle gets there, but you also see that Deoring's has abandoned him and is charging at the patient as well. You don't think Albert can withstand attacks from all three (or even one), and Ahsa will be very vulnerable if he goes down.

Roald is still it bit shaken up by his terrible act of cowardice. It is so unlike him, maybe the lack of water is getting the best of him. The feeling fades with every step he takes further from the edge of the forest. "Get a grip you idiot! your friends need help." He says out loud as he slaps himself in the face. Then he hears the captain shouting: "RUN PRIEST!"
"oh no, Albert"
Roald heads back to the battlefield, but stays in the refreshing shade for as long as possible. At first he is running at a moderate pace, but very soon he is sprinting towards Albert.
"Hold on! I'm coming!"
OOC:
Roald's goal is to put himself between Asha and the Gargoyles.

Albert tries to keep an eye on the incoming gargoyle as he keeps running for the forest. That way he can try to dodge its attack. It won't be easy, but it's what he's got to work with.

As he runs, he hears Roald's voice in the distance. He has no strength spare to reply, but deep inside, he's filled with joy. Who would have thought such friends exist?
Jul 17, 2022 2:11 am
Deoring is stunned by the gargoyle’s kick and he falls to the ground as it runs away. That hurt. Drawing on the hardiness gained by working hard in his family’s mill, he shakes it off, stands back up and begins running after it. Running comes easy to him, even as tired as he is. It’s just like running away from the constable in the streets back home.

Nothing I do seems to do anything to these gargoyles. But I’ve got to do something!
Jul 18, 2022 7:30 am
Roald is almost in position. Still running he shouts '' They can't enter the forest! Retreat to the forest!''
When he gets close to Asha and Albert he turns his back to them, facing the gargoyles.
OOC:
depending on their actions he will dodge, if he gets attacked.
Or strike, if they try to pass him by.

When Albert and Asha are safe, Roald will try to get back to the woods.

You can see the captain's visibly relief at your words, though she is unable to 'retreat' on her own and is too far away for you get to her.

You are able to interpose yourself between the onrushing gargoyle and Albert, its claw descending inexorably at his back. Maybe you can deflect it enough, or take the blow in his place?

What do you do?
OOC:
'Deflecting' the blow --off your sword maybe-- could mean you prevent any damage on a good roll, or get to choose who takes what portion on a 7-9, but Albert and Ahsa will still take the blow on a 6-.
If you interpose yourself between the claw and your friends, you can likely take all the damage and risk upon yourself, the roll (stat based on how you are doing it) can reduce the damage by some amount (completely on a 12+), with only a small risk carrying through to Albert on a 6- if he does not roll well to get away.

You hear Roald's statement that the forest presents a barrier for these stone beasts. Upon the news the captain, rises painfully to her feet --blood flowing from her leg, requiring her to lean on a 'branch' for support-- and turns to face the gargoyle you are pursuing. Without your help it is like to go right through her, but it is possible that, between the two of you --and if your can work together-- you can pin it and slow it.

The reported safety of the forest's edge is but a few paces away, but they are hard paces to make under these conditions, especially if you have to worry about attacks from behind.

If you completely put your life in your friends' hands you can focus all your energy on covering the distance, but ignoring the blow you can feel coming is hard and scary.

Your patient is unlikely to be much help, having passed out some time during the transition from two to one carrier.

What do you do?
OOC:
You could try to avoid the attack, and then refocus on getting away.
Or you could rely on Roald's protection, possibly sharing the damage --depending on his roll-- and try to get you or your patient to the trees with one more roll.

Suddenly, Albert's feet feel lighter. As if he's walking on clouds. He feels a smile coming up until he realizes what's going on. It's not that his legs don't hurt anymore, but rather that he can't feel them anymore. Oh no. He thinks surprisingly calmly. Maybe I'll just lay down in that bush over there. A bit of green twigs is just out of arm's reach from him. He almost made it, but not quite. Is this my punishment for choosing friendship over religion? A million thoughts go through his head in a split second.

Mustering up every last bit of his consciousness, he puts his arms underneath Asha's armpits and, at least in his own mind, places her gently inside the shrubbery. Nothing more but a whisper escapes his lips. "Raynor's fire will light your way." Then he collapses and everything goes black.

Albert and Ahsa collapse, unconscious in a heap, still some paces from the safety of the treeline. The gargoyle that struck the priest down comes to a stop above them, instead of slashing at them further, it poses with its arms held above its head as though preparing some ritual, an eerie blueish light appears to surround it.

The other two gargoyles cease their pursuit and turn to face Roald, Deoring and the captain, apparently now intent on preventing them from interfering with whatever is happening at the forest's edge.

Grim faced, the captain turns to stand shoulder to shoulder with you to face the oncoming threat. Meanwhile, somewhere in Albert's subconscious...

Albert opens his eyes and slowly stands up. "Asha? Asha, where are you?" He was holding her a second ago, then he tripped and now she's gone. He looks around, but doesn't recognize the area. In fact, it's hard to recognize anything because the place where he's standing is covered in a thick layer of fog. It's definitely a forest, he can see a few tree trunks.

"NO, ALBERT!" A sound echoes around him, faint, yet he can tell it's Roald's voice. It sounds far away. "ROALD? IS THAT YOU?" Albert shouts towards nothingness. He starts to walk in the direction he thought the sound was coming from. His legs hurt, a lot! Reducing his tread to shuffling forward instead of walking. The sound echoes again, this time from another direction. "Roald, what's going on? Where did this fog come from?" But Roald does not answer.

"DEORING???" He asks more urgently. Suddenly, he hears Deoring's voice, similar to Roald's. "Captain, look behind you!" There is no way of pinpointing the location of the voice. Albert walks through the forest aimlessly, searching for his friends.

As you snatch Ahsa's limp body away, the gargoyle turns an expressionless --yet still clearly angry-- face towards you, plants is claws in the ground, leans forward and appears to... inhale. The blue light intensifies, and you can now see the edge of the sphere it forms. As you drag the body past that edge you feel a resistance and unrecognisably distorted ghostly wisps are sucked from the body towards the gargoyle's open mouth, as though it is trying to... eat her soul? That would not be the strangest thing you have seen recently, in this place.

As you pull, the bubble elongates, and then presses against the invisible barrier at the forest's edge. With a herculean effort you drag Ahsa through, and with snapping sensation the gargoyle looses its grip and the 'soul' --distorted as it was-- springs back into the body and she takes a shuddering breath that you probably had not noticed she was holding.

Groggily her eyes open, and she looks around, frightened. But when she sees the trees she laughs joyously --ignoring the spasm of pain that laughter brings-- and, smiling excitedly, gabbles at you in a language you don't understand --though the tone suggests gratitude-- before sighing contentedly, closing her eye and falling asleep, the hand not holding her side burying itself rapturously in the soil.

The two gargoyles stand motionless, glaring at you from their side of the treeline, Albert's body sprawled behind them.

Deoring helps the Captain move more quickly by providing his shoulder as support.

"Now Captain, lean your weight on my shoulder to take some pressure off of that leg. Look - Roald has gotten Asha to safety! The gargoyles aren't following him, they're just standing there. Let's head a little over to the right to keep a little distance from them just to be sure. Then we can meet up with Roald and Asha and make a plan."

As they walk, he offers a silent prayer to Raynor to light the way to safety.

Once they reach the woods, Deoring lets out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Raynor." he says, then, to the Captain, "Just a little farther - I can just make out Roald through the trees."

After another minute or so, they make it to where Roald is standing and Asha is sitting. He suggests to the Captain that she sit down as well to take the weight off her leg and then helps her to do so.

"Roald, we have to go back for Albert. The gargoyles are just standing there, but I'm not sure how long we have until they attack once more. The time to act is now, but the Captain and Asha are in no shape to fight."

He turns to the Captain. "No offense, ma'am."

She says after peering intently at Albert for a moment. "MOVE!"

She does not appear impressed by your try-hard attitude, and you get the impression that everything impressive you have done so far, fell just outside her sight or notice, and that this group would not be her first choice of fighting companions if she had such a choice.

Like a stream or a pond. "Don't worry, Albert, I'm not here to hurt you." A voice says, and as he hears it, a figure appears through the mist in front of him. The man is cloaked in a dark coat and standing by a small raft near the water's edge.

"Don't try anything! I've got Raynor protecting me!" Albert shouts, but it's obvious in his voice that he's not even sure Raynor is protecting him anymore. "Ah, yes." The figure says. "Well, you see, Raynor is the one who sent me." A hand moves up and motions for Albert to come closer. "Come closer, Albert. I'd like to have a little chat with you."

Albert doesn't want to come closer, yet his legs are moving. Like he's not in control of them right now. "What's going on? What are you doing? Who are you? Stop!"
- "Just a chat, Albert. I will answer all your questions in a minute." The cloaked individual says in a calm and soothing voice.

Dragging Asha to safety, seeing the smile on her face, it makes Roald somewhat happy and fulfilled. He is strangely enjoying the moment, staring at Deoring and the captain who are limping towards him.
Then his gaze turns back to the Gargoyles and... ALBERT!

His mind goes in al directions, not able to think straight he just stands there staring. in the back Deoring is mumbling something about a fight but the words don't get through to him.

-"MOVE!"

Roald snaps out of his daydream.
Only one way to do this
"Get Albert, Deoring. I'll distract these stone monsters"

With the strain, after the dehydration, you think you have torn or pulled a muscle, the pain is worse than the centipede bite, and you just know you will walk with a limp for weeks.

How could I forget to pray? he wonders.

"Hey Roald, the gargoyles seem to have turned back to statues. Can you help me carry Albert over to the Captain and Asha?"
Jul 27, 2022 5:32 am
Between them, Roald and Deoring carry Albert back to the others. The gargoyles have not moved throughout the process.

The captain has torn strips off her shirt and bandaged her leg, and can hobble around. "Does he have any bandages?" She asks, assuming he is a 'healer' and indicating Albert's pack. "We should dress his wounds, or something...

"Are you hurt?" She asks Deoring (and Roald, but mainly Deoring).

"We need a hospital." She says. "But first, water. And some rest... but I don't like those things watching us... but I don't want to move the injured..." Her decisive orders become uncertain at the end and she grimaces in pain.

'Asha' needs proper medical attention soon or she will get worse. Albert should not be moved and he should get better (though you can't know that for sure).

The figure is more clearly visible now and with that, Albert understands what's going on. "Are you the reaper? You've come to take me, haven't you?" A tear rolls down his cheek. "That has yet to be decided, Albert." The reaper replies. That's when Albert notices a shape on the small raft, just behind the reaper. "Asha!" Her lifeless body is floating calmly on the pond. He tries to reach her, but his legs are out of his control right now. "Is she... dead?" He asks.

"Not yet, but she's not in a good way." The voice is still so soothing that it's hard to link it to 'Death'. "Neither are you, Albert. Your fate and hers might still be linked, even in this place between realms." Death takes a step closer to Albert. "Tell me, Albert, is she really worth forsaking the vow you made to Raynor? He gave you a job, you know. It could have lead to greatness." The reaper doesn't sound like he's judging the decision. He sounds almost genuinely interested.

"I... She... Well, you see..." Albert stumbles for words. "I don't want her to die. Can't you just take me and let her live?" The figure seems to be lost in thought, weighing the options when Albert gets a strange sensation, as if being pulled backwards. "Hey, stop that!" He shouts at Death, but Death isn't paying any attention to him right now.

Roald Gulps down as much water as he can, and fills all the canteens.
He hurries back to the others and tells them there is meat to be found nearby. Deoring is already working on the sled for Asha. Albert is still lying motionless.

Roald bends over Albert and gently pinches his shoulder.

"Albert, wake up. I've got water for you. C'mon man, we can't do this without you!"
Roald moistens Albert's lips with a few drops from his waterskin and keeps trying to wake him up.

"I'm afraid it's not that easy." The reaper tells Albert. "One soul cannot replace another. Besides, I believe Raynor is not done with you yet." The figure gestures towards Asha. "You can save her, if your faith is strong enough." It pulls a book from under its robes and shows it to Albert. It's a book he recognizes. One that he read, long ago, at the temple. He reads the title out loud.

"The battle of Handu." A book about one of the most revered military leaders of old. A woman who conquered regions in Raynor's name. A tactical genius. Albert remembers a quote from the book. The smart will always conquer the strong.

"Albert, wake up." Death says suddenly. Albert stares, confused. "Huh? What do you mean?" "I've got water for you." The voice sounds weird, not the same as before. It sounds more like... Roald's voice. "C'mon man, we can't do this without you!" Albert watches as the pond begins to ripple and a spout of water hits him straight in the face. That's when he opens his eyes and sees Roald helping him to some much needed water.
