- Deoring -

The gargoyles are all flashing wings and slashing claws, you do your best to parry them, but can only avoid them so much while still trying to keep them engaged and distracted from your companions. They are not massively coordinated, but while blocking one, the other's claws strike you viciously in the armour, back and fourth between them.

It is eerie fighting something that looks like rock, but moves and does not make a sound. Fights are supposed to be loud and frantic, but your opponents are completely silent and methodical, not caring overly much when your sword blows strike sparks from their lichen covered 'skin'. They appear intent on finishing you as quickly as possible.

In the fray, it is hard to keep track of your companions progress, but you can assume from the lack of any cries of alarm that you have kept them from being attacked.

What do you do now?

Your fleeing friends are almost at the edge of the woods, but not quite. Deoring has taken some blows, but is still standing strong.

With his friends almost reaching the edge of the forest, Roald flings himself into battle bellowing a hoarse but mighty "FOR RAYNOR!!"
From the corner of his eye he sees a shadow dislodge itself from the roof.
"DEORING, we have to make a run for it, this is out of our league" He takes a pause as he tries to dodge a stone claw. "Let's also head for the woods in a different direction, we'll find the others when we all are safe"

You don't know if it is the tiredness, or the dehydration or what, but your movements are just not as athletic as you are used to. You saw the third gargoyle out of the corner of your eye, but can not avoid it as it crashes down on top of you --apparently the wings don't make their landings any softer-- and the wind is knocked out of you as you go sprawling, the heavy stone statue riding you down to the ground, pinning you as it prepares to take a bite out of your neck.

Lifting your face from the dirt, you see the captain hesitate at the sight of your plight.

Roald is lying down on the ground, it's hard to breathe, it feels like there is a mountain on his chest.
where's my sword?
Roald turns his head searching for his sword and sees the captain looking back and slowing her pace.
'' run, you, fools'' he tries to shout, but the words come out as a whisper.

Then his hand touches the grip of his sword, he holds it firmly, and with all the strength he has left, swings it blindly towards his enemy.

Albert is too focused on getting Asha out to even realize what's going on behind him. He hears shouts from Roald and Deoring, but keeps heading forward. Get Asha to the forest, that's all we need to do right now. "I hope so too." He replies to the captain. "Just a few more meters" He can see the bushes clearly now, they'll give good cover. "Asha, are you hanging in there? We're close, you're going to be alright."

- Albert -

"Mmpph. I'm OK." Ahsa says in a soft voice, though you can hear the words are underlain by crying, kept quiet so as not to distract her carriers. She is willing to take the pain if it gets her away from that place.
Jul 9, 2022 5:47 pm
Roald's blow chiseled off a piece of the creature's pointy ear. It doesn't seem to do any harm, but the force of the blow makes it shift just enough for Roald to get out underneath.
As he gets back on his feet, he shouts at Deoring . '' Let's get out of here! Follow me!''
He starts running for the woods looking back over his shoulder to see if Deoring is following. Praying that the gargoyles will go back to their roof when they see there is no threat anymore.
Jul 10, 2022 3:56 am
Deoring, tries his hardest to keep the stone claws of the gargoyles at bay.

"I just need to buy a little more time so they can get Asha to safety," he tells himself. "Come. On. Uggh," he grunts as he parries the first several swipes from the eerie stone beasts.

Deoring’s heart is beating hard and loud under the strain. He can’t tell what progress the Captain and Albert have made carrying Asha to safety. He can’t turn to look - he can’t risk losing his focus.

Suddenly, a claw gets past Deoring’s defenses and rakes into his side, knocking the wind out of him. He staggers, but by the grace of Raynor, he somehow stays on his feet. He continues battling the gargoyles, but he’s beginning to realize he can’t keep this up much longer.

Seemingly as if from a long distance, he hears Roald shouting. A little dazed, it takes him a moment to realize Roald was shouting at him. "What is he saying?" Deoring wonders.

Roald shouts again, "Let’s get out of here! Follow me!"

Deoring jogs away from the gargoyles - with his side in so much pain, he can’t run - in the direction of Roald’s voice.

Deoring: One of the gargoyles still hounds you as you move, but you are able to take the worst of its blows without significant harm so far. Seeing you moving, the other one of your attackers looks around and spots the trio, partway to the woods, and proceeds to fly-hop rapidly in their direction, your distraction spent unless you can do something to draw its attention back to you.

Roald: You have broken free of your attackers hold, but it is still following right behind you, poised to attack at the first opening.

Albert: You and the captain have gotten Ahsa almost to the treeline when you notice the danger, one of the original two gargoyles has split from the attack on Deoring and is starting to head your way. It is still closer to him than to you, but you will need to do something herculean if you are to get away.

What do you each do?
OOC:
You will probably each need to roll, one more time, to get out.

"Captain, ..." Albert says, quite out of breath already. "Can you carry Asha the rest of the way on your own? I may need to take a stand and ward off that gargoyle that has spotted us." He takes a quick peek behind them. "At this rate, I don't think we'll make it to the forest before it catches up to us."

How do you get rid of a gargoyle? Just like his legs, his mind is sprinting to try and find a solution. They're made of stone. They like roofs? THINK, Albert, THINK! Is there anything useful in there?

"No, priest." The captain says. "There is nothing I can do, she is going to need your healing.

"Good luck" She says as, before you can act, she pushes Ahsa into your arms and turns to meet the oncoming stone menace, her drawn sword glinting in the sunlight.

You know that standing and fighting will be suicide. You have no option but to flee. Hopefully she can buy you enough time to make it with the dead-weight of the now-unconscious girl in your arms.

It will take all your strength to get to the trees, the faster you can manage it, the less time the captain will need to spend battling the gargoyle for ground.

Out of the corner of his eye, Deoring sees one of the gargoyles hop-fly towards Albert, the Captain and Asha. He freezes for just an instant, just long enough to realize that going after that gargoyle would only alert the gargoyle still with him of the others.

He yells "By Raynor’s fire!" as loud as he can and goes on the offensive against the remaining gargoyle, no longer just parrying to bide time, but hoping against all hope to kill this one. Or, failing that, to at least to recall the attention of the other gargoyle and get it to come to its companion’s aid.

He swings his glowing sword with all he’s got.

As Roald looks of his shoulder he sees Deoring following behind him. Good, we might make it to the forest and take shelter
Confident that his friend is close by he keeps his eye on the prize and digs deep.

By Raynor 's fire

What? Again he looks over his shoulder and notices the distance between him and Deoring .

The first thing that comes to mind is 'Idiot!', but only a second later he understands Deoring's incentive. There are only 2 gargoyles left, where is the third? Damnit!

Roald slows his pace just enough to let his attacker get a little bit closer. At the last moment he turns around sticking his sword out as to use the gargoyles speed and Force against itself. It's a desperate move but all he can think of at this time.

''BY RAYNOR'S FIRE!''

He digs in his heels, closes his eyes and waits for impact.

Albert is caught off guard by the captain's decision. "No!" He wants to say, but stops himself and watches the captain leave him alone with Asha. With watery eyes, Albert keeps running. His legs, arms and back are hurting from carrying Asha, and he can feel a coughing fit coming up, but he has to do this. Just one last sprint to the tree line. "Asha, hold on tight." He can feel her blood on his fingers, and seeping through his own clothes as he runs.

Please, Raynor. I beg of you to aid my friends and get them out safely. My life of dedication to your faith, for their safety.

Not expecting his enemy to retreat, the creature rushes by Roald at full speed. Before it is able to turn around, Roald starts to run as fast as he can towards the woods. He doesn't dare to look back at how Deoring is faring. But he fears the worst for his brave companion. Maybe it is the wind in his eyes, but a tear rolls over his cheek.
You coward! Stupid coward!
OOC:
I inserted the chance to escape because of the 12 I rolled. Maybe a con roll is still necessary to get to the edge of the forest?
