Interest Check: World of Catthulhu

I bought the "Cats of Catthulhu" game by Joel Sparks this week (formerly titled "Call of Catthulhu", but unknown forces - probably cult-based - caused the name to change at some point). I really like the concept and ideas (silly though they are), but the rules, while clever, seem too simple for even a rules-light game (at least for my tastes). I investigated some other cat-based rpgs out there (yes, there are several) to see if I liked their rules. But I did not. So I hacked World of Dungeons: Turbo by John Harper (super-simple Powered-by-the-Apocalypse) to make a set of cat-based, light rules that suit me better.

Now that I have a fun setting and ruleset for playing housecats vs Lovecraftian horrors, I'd like to try it out. Would anyone like to try a PbP one-shot of what I'm dubbing "World of Catthulhu"? Here's the blurb from the back of the "Cats of Catthulhu" book that does a good job of explaining what this game would be conceptually:

"In Cats of Catthulhu, players take on the roles of a variety of ordinary-seeming cats fighting conspiracies of cosmic chaos. Mighty spirits such as Snarlyathotep, slimy Phatphroggua, and Hastpurr of the Yellow Eye inspire their cultists to destroy civilization-but that’s where all the comfy furniture is!"

If there's enough interest, I'll go off and put together a game forum with details and the rules, and then come back to make an official recruitment thread.

Yes. In case you can't tell, I like my cats.

Quick question, do the cat's have opposable thumbs and the ability to read, etc? Trying to figure out how anthropomorphic they are. Let me know if you want a concept, but it's definitely going to be a black cat.

Sorta reminded me of John Wick's Cat. :)

These cats are really only anthropomorphic in the way they think. In a physical sense, they are very much "just cat". No opposable thumbs. No reading (though there is a talent for that).

I looked into John Wick's "Cat" for a different ruleset, but ultimately decided not to use them. Lots of similarity though, for sure.

I've been lamenting the almost complete lack of animal games on here for almost three years. Finally, my time to shine has come! (...Cthulhu aspect aside.)
So yeah, count me in if you do this. :)

Are you going for humor in regards to game mood? Or humor mixed with drama? Because I love when funny games still manage to pull off serious moments. :D

I will be going for humor mixed with supernatural horror, rated roughly PG-13. Maybe similar to the tone, but not content, of "Army of Darkness" or "Tremors." I don't claim to be a laugh-out-loud funny GM, but my plans involve a fair bit of absudity.

Understood, sounds good! Gotta love the oxymoronish feel of cosmic horror and cat humor put together. :D Makes me wonder about a character to fit it... Ping me if this does happen, please!

Just an FYI, I will probably be reading all thoughts with a British Gentleman internal monologue, even if everything I say comes out as a ridiculous "mreow".

Awesome sounding game! And if you haven't seen it yet, The Secret of Cats is right up in this alley as well.

I'm in! I love cats and the opportunity to play as a Siamese is irresistible. No, I am not going to be offensive and have a ridiculous Asian accent (he will probably be native to the country in which the campaign takes place).

Ok. That seems like enough interest. I'll start working up the game forums. Look for an official recruiting thread later in the week.

Siamese are amazing! Have you ever read Cats in May by Doreen Tovey (or any other books by the author)? If not, you might find it interesting - there are a lot of Siamese cats in it. :D

On the same note, I want to play a Persian. They are always either evil or comedic relief in movies, and all because people think their heads look weird. I want to be a nice Persian cat for a change. :P

Also, yay, it is happening!

I should clarify perhaps that I have absolutely ZERO experience with PbtA and will likely need to be nursemaided through mechanical bits.

The good news is that the rules for this game fit on one page. If you can roll 2d6, add them together, and then add a number to that, you are pretty well set. Character creation is also a matter of a handful of simple choices. So... not a lot of mechanical crunch to the game, but easy to pick up.
