It is a typical day in Waterdeep. It is springtime and the sun has just started to get a hold of the weather outside. It finally feels warm standing outside, but head into a shadow and you feel the chill.

Dean has just received a crate of new potion bottles directly from the glassblower. Now he and his father have to fill them. Once he returns to the store there is a nervous-looking human man. Cuse'me do you have one of those healing potions? My wife is about to give birth and last time she broke... down there. Without the potion, she would have been in really bad shape.

You take out the box of healing potions. As you do a Watchman burst into the shop. Potion of healing! Now, I have an injured watchman bleeding out!

https://i.pinimg.com/564x/bf/58/35/bf5835470c97b29db53c5d853f708338.jpg
You open the box with the 3 potions you normally have ready at hand. Two your father made, and one you did some weeks ago. To your amazement and horror, two of the potions have faded and contain some dark murky water. Only one of the potions has the red hue of vitality. What is going on? Once the healing potions magic has set it is good for decades, why did your father's potion fail and yours did not?
Who should have this one good potion?
May 17, 2022 9:02 pm
Without thinking twice Dean hands the good potion to the man whose wife is about to give birth, then he turns to the other one. Quickly, show me to the watchman, i know a bit of medicine and healing magic. hesitant to share one of his many aspirations out-loud he grabs his trusty set of thieves tools and follows the watchman, after dragging the both men out and quickly closing the shop before leaving.

Throughout the whole event hawk makes sure to stay next to Dean. Quietly accessing the situation.

Not wasting time lad kneels next to the man and begins to go through his tools...

Dean quickly finds the right tool for the job, if exactly the small mirror, he concentrates on it as he positions the mirror close to the body, in a position where it reflects the wound he begins to murmur a healing spell, drawing the power from within himself and concentrating on the mirror as Dean casts cure wounds.

The wound begins to visibly fade away, as if getting sucked into the mirror. With the fading wound the lad becomes visibly paler...

Yes... Recently the new generations of crafters have started to study the basics of magic that would assist us in our craft. Even though most attempts are successful, the magic potential is still very limited if compared to the clergy... while explaining Lad holds his head, he hasn't used magic in a while, hence his body wasn't ready for the sudden pressure causing a headache. He thinks...Do i have enough materials to replace the potions at the shop?... Or any coin meant for them... What were the ingredients prices? before giving the guards an answer about his reward.

The wounded guard opens his coin purse and after rummaging around in it, he just hands it to you. It contains 14gp, 38sp and 12cp. This is what I have on me. I will surely come by later to purchase your stock of healing potions
Once again both of them thank you and they return to the watch garrison

Dean is taken aback by the sudden money-giving action from the guard, he does accept it tho with a confused Yes .... Thank you. he definitely wasn't expecting a reward.

He hurriedly returns to the shop and is startled by his father. Father, what do going on? Why are there so many people here? Is there another civil dispute?.... usually at moments like those the potions become quite sought after...

Dean probably gets dragged into the back-room where the workshop is located after father asks the question he scratches his head, disturbing the dark locks, and thinks out loud Honestly, i don't know, potions once completed are supposed to last for centuries....by the looks of it they have gone bad, been like that since the morning. I sold the last good one and then took off to help out the other client personally. Couldn't leave a man to die on the street now, could i? by the end of his explanation Dean is already at the caldron, pouring in the water and starting the fire. To begin the brewing process. Father, do we have enough materials for them? Do you know how many batches we have left? he asks with a serious manner Because of the whole morning event i didn't get to check the inventory.... If i will get sent to the market, i should look around with other brewers, maybe we even will be forced to raise the prices... he thinks while reaching for the needed ingredients... How are we doing on the rest of the potions?

While brewing the potions, in the meantime Dean variates between tending to a rare customer, doing small repair work, people often brought their favorite or inherited piecies to the shop to be polished up or repaired, some even brought dull kitchen knives to be sharpened, or, if time allows, study a book, borrowed from the library, about the local useful wild-plantlife. After all, he believes that he should know about the plants he's working with.

While he's doing that Hawk stays at the shop area, alerting the owners about potential customers, despite the fact that they do have a bell attached to the doorframe.
May 22, 2022 12:30 pm
It is evening time and one of the last customers in asks for a healing potion. When he hears that you are out of stock, he mentions that this was the third shop he has visited that was out of healing potions.
You close up and it is finally time to fill the potion bottles. Each of you takes an empty bottle and pours the potion into it and cork it

You both look satisfied, but after a few moments, one of the potions loses its red lustre.

Come morning the two men exit the workroom sleepy... This is not the first time Dean had to pull an all-nighter, so he's doing alright, better than his father in many cases, it seems like the age of the old man is slowly getting the better of him, he leads the tired man to the second floor of their shop, the living area, and tucks him into his bed.

Then heads back down, makes himself some strong tea, puts the good potions away, before grabbing 200 gp out of the store savings to buy more healing root. I need more materials to find the cause of this... spoiling phenomenon... he looks at the time, the old mechanical watch he made for his father's birthday, out of scrap parts the shabby old thing holds many warm memories, hanging proud over the register.

It's 6 in the morning, he still has a couple of hours on his hands, so the lad packs his experimental brew, he didn't have the chance to test it yesterday, and one of the bad potions in his bag and heads to the Crafters guild. An issue like this should be reported... but i better keep silent about the specifics... after that he plans to head to the market to grab some more healing root, after all they only have 1 left ...

He greets his father at the entrance, return the 110 gp and puts the roots in the workshop. During a moment when the shop is empty Dean turns to his father. Theres quite an uproar in the guild, it looks like the problem is way bigger than a batch of bad roots. They're turning over the whole inventory...Then the market price of the roots rose 3 times, I bought 6, in case they get higher so I have enough to conduct some experiments together with you, I think I have a clue about the part that went wrong.... he thinks for a moment...Was his father able to cast spells? if yes what spells did he know?

From the side one could say that the problem has gotten the lad quite excited.

Dean if every healing potion in the city has turned bad, and yours don't then get to it. We can sell them at ten times the normal price. At least. Start cooking, and I will get some more roots.
Your father closes the shop and touches the doorframe with his screwdriver. Dean recognises that he properly sealed or warded the door.

Some hours he returns with 3 roots. It's a shame you didn't buy the all. The price was up to 25gp pr root, and 3 was all I could get. How is the cooking going? Your cooking is going as expected, but you still have a few hours to go.
OOC:
Normally you can make one potion at the time, but for it to make sense for a potion crafter to have a business, then I would say that you, could tend extra brewing station, provided you have a dedicated lab (you have). The DC for Alchemy or Herbalisme is 8 pr crafting station beyond the first. Are you tending 2 crafting stations the DC is 8, tending 3, and the DC is 16. You still have to be able to cast the spells at the right time. Fail would mean the resources are lost

Alright, but please don't get too greedy, i don't want to gather a lot of attention... he blushes and scratches behind his head, Dean always has been a bit shy... then he thinks for a moment I think that you shouldn't get too caught up with buying the roots and wait a bit, if the problem is true, then their price should drop soon... When people realize that it's not because of a bad batch of roots... he returns to the brew, using 2 stations at a time...

Other adventures have been sent outside the city, and teleported to other big cities, like Candlekeep and Baldurs Gate to see if they have similar problems. They are waiting for answers.

Those with magic abilities can cast healing spells like normal, but no one can seem to be able to bind the healing magic to liquid form anymore. Jun 22, 2022 7:38 am
Dean looks around the room, looking for anything that could help him escape or any peepholes his capturers could be using, anything that could help him indicate where he is... While doing it he goes through drawers looking for small tools, like lockpicks, that they have forgotten to put away when prepping the room, that he could quickly pocket. He attempts to be as silent and accurate as possible...

He also checks Hawks cage, is it Locked?
Jun 22, 2022 10:32 am
The birdcage has no lock or door. The bars are of a red metal, thin, and Dean surmise that the cage it will properly respond to a magic command word. The cage looks expensive. It could have housed other "guests" before it had Hawk as a visitor.

The main door is a heavy oak door. There is a hatch where food can be brought, but the hatch is also closed and locked.

Jun 23, 2022 7:43 pm
You have all your gear, apart from your weapons.

Your spell tells you that the cage is enchanted. So is a trunk in the corner of the room. Examining it further, you conclude that the trunk properly contains your confiscated equipment and is magically locked. There is a slight magical aura on some of the ingredients in the lab, but that is to be expected.
OOC:
remember that you can change your "right tool for the job" tool to other toolkits
Jun 23, 2022 8:10 pm
Dean grabs a nearby jug and infuses it into a alchemy jug, he also creates a set of woodworking tools and attempts to take the chest apart.

He creates acid with his jug, replacing the reloading infusion, and collects it into the available vials, he pours some on the cage, Hoping that it will melt, then he checks on Hawk.
Jun 24, 2022 8:58 am
Acid on the cage works, but slowly. The metal darkens, and while the acid works, gives the chest some attention. By the time he has forced the chests lock, and recovered the rest of his equipment, he checks on the acid. There has been a clear effect, but it is going to need a lot more acid and time to break through.
[ +- ] image
At this point, he can hear someone coming on the other side of the door. They stop at his door, and he can hear someone working to unlock it.
OOC:
What does Dean do?
Jun 24, 2022 4:37 pm
Dean quickly uses the rest of his 8 ounces of acid on the cage while snuffing out the light in the room and equipping his night-vision goggles. Then he hides somewhere in the room, behind one of the larger furniture pieces. He holds his loaded gun in one hand and a healing root in the other, once the person will enter he will use the root as a distraction, by throwing it across the room.

He silently hopes that Hawk will be already freed by the time the person will enter the room.

Jun 26, 2022 9:12 am
Dean is hiding behind the work table, with a flask of acid and a loaded gun. The door opens and light from the hallway cast shadows on the floor before Dean. Two shadows look like armoured guards, with helmets and sharp angles on their shoulders (properly armour). The third shadow, is much softer, like a balled man without armour, but in soft comfortable robes.
Hello? This is the right room right? Oh there is the bird, then we are in the right place. An elder voice says.
Show yourself boy! We are not here to harm you.
OOC:
Dean is fully hidden, for now, if you want to attack, then you have the surprise round and then roll initiative.
Jun 26, 2022 5:39 pm
Those are clearly lies ... first Dean Will use his mage hand to slam the door shut behind the man, then in complete darkness he will attempt to manuver his way trough the room towards the comfortably robed man, his plan is to have him at the gunpoint before he even notices the lad...

Hawk
When the new arrivals walk by the caged bird, Hawk will attempt to distract them by spewing atrocities and making as much noise as possible to help Dean with his plan.
OOC:
So... How do you treat point-blank shots in your games?

hawks help action, can help you. It can't give them a disadvantage, but it can give you an advantage.
Surprise round, hawk distracted the sage, giving you advantage on the attack. As you hit the AC 10, I didn't roll the advantage
First round, sage cast spell, guards attacked, you killed sage.

Next round: Hawk can distract one guard, giving you an advantage to attack. If you are using ranged attack in melee, you have disadvantage, that the help action negates, resulting in a normal attack, with the pistol.

My intention with this captivity was that you over days freed hawk, and the sage explored the reasons for your unique healing potion abilities. Then with some preparations, you could make your escape. I imagined a kind of Ironman in the Afghanistan caves kind of thing (starting of the first Ironman movie).

Dean looks at the woman there's a small twinkle of hope in his eyes, that soon gets replaced with realization What exactly makes her better than them?... and then slight indifference.

He thinks about his reply for a moment deciding to start with a Who?, clearly not knowing about the kidnappers, after all he's a small crafter, not a politician, then puts down the summoned weaver's tools, with a halfway finished badly woven hay basket, in the pile with other, unsuccessful attempts. After all, he has been here for who knows how long and doing nothing for the time would have rendered him insane. Being honest he had a choice between stone, the material the cell is made of, and the hay bedding, his oh so gracious captors decided to bless him with. Where the only commodity lacked in comfort it fortunately made up with the versitility of the material at hand.

The lad walks to the cells doors and lightly knocks on the metal contraption as if reminding her, then opens his mouth, it is dry, so all movement is painful to him. With a silent, lightly coarse voice he speaks Water. Hawk. Gun. In an attempt to get something to quench his thirst, find out about his dear companion and weapon with the minimal amount of words.

Where it comes to the lack of enthusiasm towards his probable savior, Dean could only think of how strained his body currently is. After all at this point he has to put effort into every active thought or action...Well let's hope that i was wrong about her...not that i have much choice at the moment...

It makes sense really. These guys are the ones who investigate magical shenanigans, and this issue with the healing potion falls within their perview.

She looks at Dean in disbelief. There are two major guild that could have done this to you.
Xanathar Guild is a guild of criminals. Before membership is granted, however, an applicant must pass a test that always involves the perpetration of a serious crime. Possibilities include murdering a guild member who has failed Xanathar in some fashion, kidnapping a Waterdavian citizen, collecting a ransom, robbing a hire-coach, or looting a warehouse.
And then The Zhentarim. It is a shadow organization that trades mercenaries and goods (including weapons) for profit. It has long sought to gain political influence in Waterdeep, but the strength of the city's Masked Lords, nobility, and professional guilds makes that difficult.

These guys are Zhentarim

Dean listens to her explanation while drinking from the waterskin. Desperately trying not to chug down the whole thing before properly moisturising his mouth.

Thanks. Where is Hawk? I mean, the metal bird, do you know where is it? he then stands still for a moment, thinking, before he continues I should probably stay here untill you clear the building, I am not exactly battle-efficient. He rubs the back of his head remembering how his little ambush attempt, didn't go as planned...

Dean is swept up with The Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors. He is not a captive but is under constant guard as they learn that he is the descendant of the man who first bottled healing magic. That tiny spark of special magic that his ancestor coned out of the gods, still flows in Dean. That is why he can make healing potion and no one else can.

3 months after the day of the brown potions, the effect dissipates. A group of adventures returns from the dungeons under Waterdeep telling tales about The Mad Wizard who nullified healing potions to hamper the constant threat of adventures into his dungeon. His nullifying effect could not touch the original bloodline
OOC:
Dean is the descendant of the healing potion equivalent of Prometheus
