Let's do it, hard success! Florence is now at 29 luck
It appears to Florence the wounds were self-inflicted. From the position and angle of the wounds, Gardiner appears to have been right-handed. The spiraling cut around the head appears to have begun at the top of the head and worked down to the neck (it’s evident that
he had to move the knife between his hands to perform the cut). The neck wound was delivered in a swift and violent manner.

It is, fail I'm afraid and no chance to push. You could use Luck, maybe if Sam fails
OOC:
If he does, I'll risk it.

Confused at the obviously self-inflicted wounds juxtaposed with other things that indicated he had no intentions of dying that night seem to overwhelm Florence and she steps back away. "James," she whispers, putting a hand to her mouth and shaking her head. I wish I knew what had troubled you so...I would have been there for you.

As Florence moves to inspect the body, Perry finds nothing on the dining table but a place setting so moves to the wardrobe, to find the box back in place, locked.

Waiting on INT roll for Sam
Jun 3, 2022 1:17 pm
Distracted by Lang while looking at the bookshelf -- especially the bookend -- Sam casts a inquisitive look at him when he takes the books. "What are these books about? And what use did Mr Gardiner have with them?" he asks.

Rolls

Appraise #1 (60) - (1d100)

(91) = 91

Appraise #2 (60) - (1d100)

(85) = 85

INT (50) - (1d100)

(55) = 55

OOC:
Ok either Sam or Lang need to use Luck if you want to pass the int roll. You decide if it’s worth it for the appraise rolls

"He wanted to know more about his dreams, and it seems he kept this journal of them. The books he borrowed were about what dreams mean but with all this," Lang said as he pointed at the ritual and the body, "it looks like he had nothing but nightmares. Maybe I can use the books to figure out what was wrong with him."
OOC:
I'll wait and see what Sam does first. ;)

Going to make a judgement call here to move things along. Sam uses 5 Luck to pass that spot hidden
Opening the drawer at the bottom of the bookcase, Sam notices there seems to be a space between the bottom shelf and the drawer. Feeling around in the gap he tries to find a way to open it and spots a button hidden in the scroll work. Pushing it releases a secret panel at the back of the unity.

Inside the compartment is a few more books. A Primer in Greek Vocabulary, two large accounting ledgers, and an envelope full of receipts. Additionally there is what feels like another book, wrapped in silk cloth.
OOC:
Perry observes this from the end of the bed.

On the other side of the bookcase, Florence steps away from the body.
[ +- ] Otto and Florence
Jun 4, 2022 3:07 am
"Mein Gott!" Otto exclaims in his native tongue as he witnesses the horrifying sight.
OOC:
Will wait to see the result of the fail. He'll move to protect Florence if he at all still has his wits about him.

Sanity (60) - (1d100)

(32) = 32

"What the...?!" Lang shouted as he turned from Sam to look back at Florence and Otto. "What is it?!"
Jun 4, 2022 8:49 am
OOC:
As the book case is floor to ceiling, you don’t see what’s going on, you’ll need to move on your turn. For now we’re back to initiative.

Otto, lose 1d6 Sanity
Jun 4, 2022 9:01 am
OOC:
It being back to initiative, where are we at in the initiative order?
Jun 4, 2022 9:20 am
OOC:
We'll start at the top.

Otto 80
Sam 55
Florence 50
Perry 50
Lang 40
Gardiner-thing 35

Florence, lose 1 sanity
Jun 4, 2022 2:13 pm
"Das kann nicht passieren!" Otto continues, his eyes wide and his face stricken. "Gardiner is not dead, he has risen from the floor!" he shouts, even as he moves to put himself between Florence and the mutilated horror. "Get back miss! The hand of the devil pulls these strings!"
OOC:
Action-wise, Otto is moving to protect Florence, and is preparing for the thing's assault. Perhaps that's worth a bonus die if the thing attacks Otto? However you think we should handle it, his goal would be to push the monster back and knock it down if it does come at them.

Rolls

Sanity Loss - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Jun 4, 2022 4:15 pm
OOC:
Agreed, bracing yourself and allowing him to attack you first will grant a bonus die. In addition, he gets a penalty die against Otto as there's a difference in Build.

Investigation is a huge part of Call of Cthulhu, searching crime scenes, digging up books and interviewing people but the other side is facing off against the horrors and those that serve them. Not only should you expect to die, but you might also go insane!

There are two types of insanity that can be experienced in facing the Mythos.

Temporary Insanity comes about if you lose 5+ from one roll.

Indefinite Insanity happens if you lose one fifth of your sanity in one game day. Below is what each character has lost so far and the threshold at which Indefinite insanity occurs.

Both result in a Bout of Madness and I'll detail that if/when we reach it.

Perry 3 (12)
Otto 4 (10)
Lang 1 (10)
Florence 2 (12)
Sam 1 (10)

Sam, you're up next
Jun 5, 2022 1:24 pm
Curious about what he just found, Sam was about to talk about it to Lang when he hears the scream. His attention shifts immediately to what is happening on the other side of the room: he drops everything he has in hand, pulls out the gun he found earlier and goes to see what is happening exactly.
OOC:
Thank you for moving things along, that's what I would have done anyway. Posting during weekends is not always easy for me...
