There's a loud thud at Otto hits the landing of the second floor, but graceful as a cat, he immediately breaks into a run behind Lang. An armed policeman comes into view at the end of the corridor and Lang shouts intructions.

Glancing back, you see the Gardiner-Thing stumble down the stairs and land on the ground, another flash of blue before the creature slowly begins to rise, shaking its head in a spray of blood. As the policeman approaches, he aims and shouts, "Turn and face the wall, hands on your....WHAT IN GOD'S NAME???"

The thing starts to run and the policeman fires, aiming for the head.

Sam heeds the call from Lang and without thinking too much, he brings out his gun. He shoots again at the eerie monster out of pure fear, aiming at the head and not being too cautious about the police officer.

OOC:
OK, Sam has one penalty for firing into melee combat and one penalty for aiming at the head. In addition he has one bonus die for point blank range. As a penalty cancels out a bonus, you are left with a penalty so roll 1d100 and 1d10 for the penalty

The Patrolman fires again, aiming for the head, at point-blank range, but the creature moves in time.

Anyone else acting this round?

OOC:
Otto will head down to the first floor, then pause and listen... see if they kill it, or it kills them.

Lang mirrored Otto. He ran down the next flight of stairs then stopped to listen to what transpired above. He also looked around for anything he could use as a weapon.
OOC:
Are we anywhere near our own rooms? Going in and grabbing a butcher knife or a tommy gun sounds great right now.

Both Otto and Lang live on the second floor. Sam and his family are on the first floor

OOC:
Otto's apartment is back up on the third floor, is that right? If so, perhaps he'll arm himself with anything handy. A coatrack, an umbrella from a stand, etc. Also fine if there's nothing to hand.
Jun 22, 2022 6:24 am
OOC:
Hope I didn’t contradict myself, but no, Otto is on the second (he could hear the chanting from above him, as Gardiner’s room is directly over his. Both Otto and Lang would have to get past the fighting to return to their rooms.
That’s not to say you can’t find improvised weapons on the first floor, umbrellas for example might be at the entrance, or anything else you might think of.

OOC:
Sam's family are on this floor? If allowed, I'll amend my action to start banging on their door and shouting that Sam needs help.
Jun 22, 2022 5:47 pm
OOC:
Cool. Amending then -- knowing the layout of the place since he lives there, Otto will head for the nearest improvisational weapon that isn't back towards the horror -- a lamp, an end table, an umbrella from the stand at the entrance type of thing.

Last question -- when you say "first floor" do you mean "ground floor" that is street level, like a North American would, or "one level up from the ground / main level," like many other places in the world, the UK among them? (A North American would call that the second floor.)
Jun 22, 2022 8:00 pm
OOC:
The scenario uses the North American conceit of 'first floor' being the ground floor so I'm sticking with that. Florence is at the street entrance, on the first floor, for example.

I'm happy for you to describe what Otto grabs, it'll be treated as an improvised weapon either way.

A young woman opens the door a few inches to Lang, keeping the chain on.

"No English, No English," she says, then slams the door shut again.

Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs, Otto ceases his flight as his eyes land on the heavy brass floor lamp that sits in one corner of the main floor. Trying to listen to what might be happening upstairs, the man moves to the lamp, unplugs it, and prepares to wield it like a two-handed club!
