Proceeding into the alley, you pass a pair of perfumed gentlemen emerging with evasive expressions on their faces.
OOC:
Do you accost them or evade them?
The alley smells like an alley in Paris. It has not had its morning cleanup in a few weeks.

The alley leads under several high windows, well above your heads. They appear to be open.
OOC:
Do you continue along the alley to see what else you find?
From the plaza before the grand entrance to the Opera, you hear the sounds of the cleaners' shovels scraping shit.

Pray tell gentlemen, what would you be doing in an alleyway at this time? I hope not playing the violin, non?

Jean squints with perfume enhanced eyes and tries to make out any distinctive characteristic of the two men.
Jun 19, 2022 1:11 pm
One of the men laughs nervously; they attempt to continue past you, out onto the plaza.

"J m'excuse, mes amis," Marcel says, blocking their path. "The lady had asked you a question. We are here investigating specific heinous crimes, and we must question you to determine if you're involved." He looks them over, wondering if it was a tryst or a trade that brought them back here.
Jun 19, 2022 5:35 pm
Jean turns around and gets ready to pull her rapier if they try to escape down the alley.
Jun 19, 2022 6:45 pm
Pierre makes a point of placing his hand on his sword's handle, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.
Jun 20, 2022 11:46 am
"Eh, mais non," answers the taller of the two men. "We - I merely was using l'pissoir. Much wine to unload, oui?" He giggles.

The shorter man just shakes his head. He has frightened eyes like a puppy.
Jun 20, 2022 8:40 pm
Jean points at the shorter man. And you Monsieur? Do you usually accompany your friend to the pissoir?
Jun 20, 2022 9:46 pm
You suspect what they was doing, technically, remains illegal in 1833 Paris - but such laws are enforced only for spite.

Pierre casts his eyes at Jean and nods toward the window. It's doubtful that these men will be a problem to them, especially now that they know their secret, and Pierre would like to get to the violins as soon as possible.

"Be gone. We have business to attend to," he says to the men emphatically. "Isn't that right, Marcel?"

A ha! It was just a matter of back alley fencing practice I see. Good day to you sirs, and may I suggest some quite affordable pensions in the Quarter Latin that may save you from dangerous encounters in dark alleyways in the future?

Jean follows the group towards the window and tries to look inside with her perfume enhanced eyes (see better in dark)

The two gentlemen depart, post haste.

The window, as mentioned, is well above your heads.

"We can form a human ladder, oui? Who wants to be the bottom rung and who wants to go in through the window and unlock the door?"
OOC:
I am hoping that "well above" isn't higher than three people high?

OOC:
I think that there is a misunderstanding. The front doors are chained shut at the outside, with a padlock. You'd have even less chance of opening them from inside the Opera.

Well above is high enough that a smaller person standing on a larger person's shoulders could pull themself up through the window.
Jun 21, 2022 3:22 pm
OOC:
Ah, right. Well, the violins could be handed out the window.
Jun 21, 2022 6:03 pm
"Come, one of you, onto my knee and then shoulder, and I'll lift you up. Only, wipe your boots first, s'il vous plait."
Jun 21, 2022 8:15 pm
I can climb, I do not mind to be first through the window so to speak. Jean starts climbing up Marcel's knee and shoulders and into the window.
Jun 21, 2022 9:47 pm
OOC:
Hm. What risk is there here? One might slip on the stones of the alley, or fall from the window, and sprain or break a limb. It's Jeanne who's taking the risk, and so I'll ask @panalexiou to roll ... it seems like "Other" for her, so a single d6 please, and could @qralloq please roll Athletics 1d8 for giving Jeanne a boost? We'll use the higher die to find the outcome.
Jun 21, 2022 9:50 pm
"Tout alors," he groans in jest under the weight of the Richelieu.

Rolls

Athletics - (1d8)

(6) = 6

Jun 21, 2022 10:18 pm
With his casual utterance, Marcel gives Jeanne a boost up through the window. She ...
OOC:
would you like to roll for how she lands, inside? Or would you rather narrate the details of "moderately well with some minor trouble?"
