Vargos gives a pointed look to Orlan as he moves to Aolita's side. His role was here, with her.
Sep 4, 2022 2:40 pm
Orlan shrugs at Vargos, glances back at the group and enters the cave.

Orlan leads the way along the path, and after fifteen paces, finds a tree with large a large, exposed root cluster. Underneath the tree is a depression, likely naturally caused, perhaps dug out by successive animals in years past. The hole is dark even in the darkness of the night, and Orlan senses instinctively that there is some threat here. Is it the smell of a predator, or a nameless malevolence that merely radiates its hate? In either event, he steps inside.

A nameless rush, the slam of many tiny beasts into his chainmail, and suddenly he's wrapped in a swarm of something fel.

The character with the highest Quick score can act first, with higher Vigilant resolving ties. These creatures are Quick 15, which is higher than any player but Gristle -- for a tie, the higher Vigilant score acts first, and their 11 beats Gristle's 10 so they go first. They attack Orlan, who should roll against his Defense -1 or take 0 Penetrating damage (ignores 5 points armor). If he fails to defend then he rolls armor (1d6) and if any bites get through (he doesn't roll a 5 or 6), even though it does no physical damage, he'll take 1d6 temporary corruption damage.

Everyone may act in whatever order they choose.

Orlan shouts in surprise and backs against the edge of the roots, trying to dislodge the creatures on his back.
OOC:
Not sure if I can use the leader ability on the same turn. If so, the swarm takes an extra 1d4 dmg per hit by my allies.

Rolls

Defense 6-1 - (1d20)

(16) = 16

Chainmail - (1d8)

(3) = 3

Temporary Corruption - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Axes were of little use against swarms, but that wouldn't stop the warrior from trying to fight them. He quickly drops his pack to retrieve a torch and prepares to light it, hoping that the flames would have more of an affect than a single blade.

Falconloft sent a note to Qralloq
Even as the creatures lunge, Vaila's owl screeches a warning, and Vaila has an arrow nocked to her bow and she lets it fly, followed almost instantly by another. She's not looking directly at the creatures that anyone can tell - her aim is guided by the creature's noise as her rheumy eyes look past them.
OOC:
She's designating this thing as her target for hunter's instinct which gives her a second chance per attack to hit. That's a special thing that is not an active ability. As her active ability, she's using Rapid Fire, exchanging her move for an extra attack. ... and oops. That second Attack(1) should have been Attack(2)
, sorry.

Aolita does not hesitate in moving forward. Vargos has the smart play -- fire -- but the immediate danger is Orlan being overwhelmed by this fel swarm. Bites and stings are one thing -- more things are poisonous in the Davokar than the witch can count -- but worse will be if they wriggle into ears, up noses, or down throats. Some can even burrow through leather, cloth, and skin alike, so the masked woman hurries to help the southron soldier knock the terrible things from his shoulders, back, and legs.

"Keep your mouth closed!" she shouts as she uses her staff and her hands on the things. "Try not to breath!"
OOC:
This is many small critters, not a large beast, correct? Are we talking raccoon, rat, or cockroach-sized vermin? Also, let me know if you need a roll here, Quick or Vigilante perhaps?

As the swarm of creatures, some kind of abhorent creatures like demonic bats, swirls toward Orlan, and tries to feast, Vaila fires two arrows deep into the mess, and her shafts pin groups of them to the tree beyond, yet they continue to struggle despite their impaling.

As Vargos seeks to light a torch,
OOC:
Half damage (swarm trait), so takes 4+2=6 total damage.

Vargos and Vaila have acted. Gristle, Orlan and Aolita are up.

What is Aolita trying to do, @Harrigan ?
Sep 8, 2022 2:51 pm
OOC:
Minimize damage to Orlan — so perhaps offer him a bonus or benefit if and when he rolls his defense? Though if the swarm is all around us and will be attacking everyonewe can model this with a simple attack from her…
Sep 8, 2022 3:00 pm
OOC:
There aren't any assist actions that I can find in the ruleset. There is a Bodyguard ability that uses a Resolute test to redirect attacks on yourself, but of course, you need to have that ability. How about a Resolute check to give a +2 to Orlan's Defense?
Sep 8, 2022 3:34 pm
OOC:
Works for me! And is in-line with "Advantage," more or less, from the core book. We could also look at the Maneuvers in the Advanced Players Guide, but I think what you suggest here is cool, Q. Rolling below.

Rolls

Resolute Test (14) - (1d20)

(7) = 7

Sep 9, 2022 6:56 pm
OOC:
Note that Orlan had indicated they wanted to use the Leader ability, granting 1d4 extra damage to others. Vaila is the only one who attacked, so I'll add that damage.

Half damage (swarm trait), so takes 4+2=6, plus 3 more here, =9 total damage.

I'll give @Zagrave the rest of the day then post for him.

Rolls

extra damage - (1d4, 1d4)

1d4 : (4) = 4

1d4 : (2) = 2

Sep 14, 2022 12:47 am
OOC:
The rest of the day turns into the weekend+. Apologies.
Gristle and Kverula attack simultaneously, but fail to do any damage to the swarm.
OOC:
Swarm regenerates 4 Toughness, 9-4= 5 total damage.
The creatures unnaturally stitch their wounds together, and squished ones come back to life. They continue to focus on Orlan, despite Aolita's interference.

They attack Orlan, who should roll against his Defense +1 (= -1 +2 for Aolita's assistance) or take 0 Penetrating damage (ignores 5 points armor). If he fails to defend then he rolls armor (1d6) and if any bites get through (he doesn't roll a 5 or 6), even though it does no physical damage, he'll take 1d6 temporary corruption damage.

Everyone may act in whatever order they choose.

Rolls

Gristle Accurate 10-1 - (1d20)

(14) = 14

Kverula Accurate 11-1 - (1d20)

(20) = 20

With a lit torch, Vargos enters the fray swinging. His blazing torch leaves glowing arcs as he attempts to batter and alight the strange, dark creatures! A satisfying thud alerts him to the fact that he had swatted a few with his burning cudgel, and the oils spatter and engulf the creatures!
OOC:
Torch seems like a short weapon, and the APG has rules for flaming weapons.
Quote:
The weapon glows and even sparks before bursting into flames when actively used. The weapon deals damage as usual, but the target starts to burn – dealing 1d4 damage for 1d4 turns, starting the turn after the initial hit. The fire is extinguished if the target uses a whole turn to roll on the ground and passes a Quick test.

Orlan tries to brush off the creatures and kerp them away from any exposed flesh.
OOC:
Don’t forget you all have an extra 1d4 per attack for the scene from his leadership ability.

Rolls

Defense 7 - (1d20)

(2) = 2

Sep 15, 2022 12:55 am
Vargos very nearly hits them, and they seem pertrubed by the fire in a way that they haven't been about mundane weapons.
OOC:
Defense is -5, so Vargos needs to roll against his Strong -5 (10=15-5).
Orlan dances away from any further damage.
OOC:
Orlan can still act, as can Aolita, Vaila, and Gristle.

Orlan grabs his two handed sword and swipes across the swarm.

"These creatures are an abombination. We must dispose of them quickly or they will keep returning. However... I have no idea how to do that. Perhaps returning from death will keep them busy." And so, she fires twice again in quick succession.

"Creatures of the dark fear fire!" cries out Vargos.
Sep 15, 2022 11:47 pm
Seeing that there are too many of the terrible things, Aoilta steps back from Orlan, trusting the man's armor will protect him, then whirls her staff and strikes at the creatures swirling around Vargos. "Blighted things! Begone!" she cries into her mask as she tries to drive them off.

Rolls

Staff Strike (Accurate 12-5=7) - (1d20)

(5) = 5

Potential Damage - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Potential Additional Damage (Thanks, Orlan) - (1d4)
