June 21st 1931. Providence, Rhode Island

Ma Shanks’ Boarding House, a three-story building, positioned at the edge of Federal Hill, near to the Italian neighborhood.
Prohibition is still in force, with the sale of alcohol illegal. The effects of the Depression are kicking in and everyone is hard pressed trying to make ends meet

Mr. James Gardiner, a recluse who lives in your boarding house, has not been seen or heard from for two days. Each of you has a reason to see if he is in his room. Through persuasion, bribes, or your own means, the landlady of this boarding house has been convinced to unlock the door and check on the tenant, while also letting you inside.

You have all gathered outside the room of Mr. James Gardiner. He’s not been seen for at least two days and everyone is getting concerned for his well-being. The Landlady rattles some keys, finding the one for Gardiner’s room.

After quietly pacing in the hallway a bit, William addresses the rest of the group saying, "This is probably going to be unpleasant. Hopefully, it won't take too long as we all have important business to attend to elsewhere." Inside, he's hoping that something frightful has happened, not because he has a fascination for the macabre, but because he wants real evidence that the strange lines of learning he's pursued might actually be real.

"I have real work to do. Can we get this over with?"

Kathy puts on a tough face, but it's clear she wants into the room as much as her boarding-house fellows. Dressed in a simple shirt, men's pants, and tight-cropped hair, Kathy leans forward as the possibility of valuables or cash behind the door dances in her mind.

Keys still jangling a little, Edit looks sharply at William Morgan. "Unpleasant? What are you talking about? I'm sure he is completely fine!"

She turns to Katerina Skirgalia. "And if you have work then I suggest you go. There's no need for everyone to be involved. I'm sure everything will be fine."

Edith turns back to the door and inserts the key into the lock and turns it, pushing the door open.

"Yes, let’s hope everything is okay. Perhaps he went on a trip, that’s not unheard of. Mr. Gardiner certainly isn’t expected to report his various coming and goings to us. It’s just that I lent him a few items which I need to retrieve for my store. Nothing more than that. A quick in and out to reclaim a couple of books." Humphrey rubs his hands together nervously. He’s clearly uncomfortable entering Mr. Gardiner’s room without permission but he simply has no other choice.

"Mrs. Costa, I am sure that any of us would be grateful that so many of our fellow boarders are interested in our communal wellbeing. After all we do all share so much about our lives here. Now let us see about Mr. Gardiner"
John is extremely happy to finally get to see the inside of Mr. Gardiner's room and learn about this man who may be secretly making alcohol. John's hands are firmly in his pockets to keep from showing them shaking with excitement.

The key is turned in the lock and the door is slowly opened.
From within comes the lingering smell of candles, long since burned out, and something sickly-sweet and copperlike. Looking in, you see it. Framed in the shafts of sunlight streaming through gaps in the curtains. A body!
The body is lying on a tarpaulin, stretched out on the floor. You can see blood. The man’s body and clothing are covered in blood. It looks as though he somehow fell over from a kneeling position. The body is wearing a green tweed coat and a brown sweater-vest—the clothes Mr. Gardiner usually wears. It must be Mr. Gardiner!
The scene is shocking. His head has been mutilated by knife cuts.

Edith rolls a 41
Edit rushes into the room collapsing at Mr. Gardiner's side.

"James! James!" she screams. She collapses on the floor next to him sobbing, not caring that her clothes are soaking up blood.

The site is more real that William had actually hoped for. Too real. The body, the blood, it's exactly the kind of evidence that William had been searching for, but now that he's found it...he begins second-guessing the desire to understand the occult secrets he'd been pursuing.

I put in the reason and the roll, but it still doesn't look like everyone else's. As long as you can read it okay then I assume it's okay the way I have it.

John moves in and checks the body and confirms that he is dead.
OOC:
As you have rolled an extreme on your first aid (1/5) you find the most information possible:
There is a deep cut, freshly made, around the head as if a knife has traced a spiral from the crown to the neck.

His clothes are blood-soaked. As the shirt is unbuttoned, you see strange marks on his chest.

The blood is dry, suggesting this all took place some days ago.

Can I have a spot hidden from John and Edith

Humphrey is the last in through the door. He tentatively pokes his head in concerned about what could be upsetting Edith so much. Nothing in his wildest dreams or nightmares could prepare him for the gruesome sight awaiting him in the apartment.

As terrifying as the scene is, he can help but worrying about drawing more attention to the room. He steps in and closes the door behind him.
Please, please… this is terrible but let’s try and keep quiet and think about what to do. We don’t want the whole building coming up to see this…murder?

I hate to disagree with you Mr. Humphrey but this was not murder. It appears Mr. Gardiner inflicted these wounds upon himself.
