I'm glad to see you up Asha, but what happened here? Why are all those people waiting at the door? Surely they aren't just waiting to give you money???

And where did the captain go? Any idea?"
Feb 1, 2023 3:39 pm
Norbert is very confused with everything he hears from the townsfolk. He will keep on asking questions but no more than 2 per person and he wil admit to being present at the event at the baron but he wil change the subject to how wel furnished the house was and how rich the baron must be.

Ahsa turns her radiant smile to Rolad. "They are wanting to 'see the adventurers'." She says, though, while you did note some excitement about your party as you walked past, they were nowhere near as interested in you as they seem to be be in her. "They wanted to hear about our adventures in the temple, and want to check how I am doing --I don't think they get many interesting visitors.

"The line outside was the healer's doing." Ahsa says with distaste. "I don't think she understands how her rules of 'not too many visitors' works in this situation, or how the queue just leads to more interest. Some people came in not knowing what the queue was for." She smiles indulgently at their simpleness.

"The town went to some effort to put together that 'show of appreciation' for you all." She says, indicating the pouches. "That was all the money they could put together, so I said I would settle for some new clothes --we burned the horrible stuff from the temple-- and that kinda snowballed, and I don't know how to tell them to stop..."

She looks around ruefully. "The captain go fed up and left. I suspect you will find her in a bar." Ahsa says dismissively.

Her explanation mostly makes sense --though a little oversimplified-- and you find yourself 'wanting to believe everything she says'. It also does not explain why the woman who left as you were coming in looked unhappy, everyone else looked very pleased with their visit.

What do you do?

"It's nice to see you're doing well, Asha." Albert says warmly. "But this does seem a bit much, doesn't it? I'll go have a chat with the healer."

He steps back out of the room to have a chat with the healer. "Excuse me. Is it customary for villagers to bring gifts like this?" Albert asks politely. "I mean, we do expect to get paid for our services, but that was already talked about with the mayor. We do not ask for these people to give us anything on top of that."

"Hey! Ain't you Norbert, the shepherd's kid?" Someone in line asks, sounding more curious than anything else. There is muttering of 'oh-yeah-agreement'. "What you doing with these adventurers? ... Did you see the girl? ... Did you [i]know the girl? I heard she had a thing for 'shepherds'."

They mainly confirm that the mayor's daughter 'went missing'. But don't seem overly worried. It all sounds rather 'fairy taley', and --absent a king and a princess-- she will have to do as a 'quest object'.

- Albert -

"It is a bit overwhelming." Ahsa agrees. "They are nice people, but I don't think they get many outsiders. And they really do need our... your.. help getting this valley sorted out. I think they are just trying to make a good impression? Hopefully they will tone it down, though, it is embarrassing --feels like I am 'sitting in state', or something-- ... and exhausting, but I don't want to tell them no."
The healer --having a respite from her receptionist duties-- has taken a moment to sit and eat from one of the baskets left in the outer room. "We tend to make sure everyone has enough to live, but I have never seen anything like this." She says. "I don't know what she did or said, but some households are going to go hungry for a while... unless we give a lot of this back to those who needed it. Unless she plans on throwing a party, we can never eat all this." Though the healer is doing a good job of trying to.

At the mention of the mayor's payment she eyes you sidelong. "Him? Are you sure?" She sounds dubious. "He is not one to give away a copper more than he has to. I hope you set in stone what you were to get paid."

You recall vague implications of compensation, but nothing concrete. You also recall that neither the healer nor the innkeeper looked overly pleased by the mayor's forcing their payment to go through him.

"Asha, I really think you should rest now. I'll go and tell the people outside there will be no more visits today. they probably won't like it but I don't see another way. Afterwards we can sit and think about our next step, and maybe eat something too. The stuff that's in the other room is enough to feed a small army" Roald smiles at his exaggeration,. He isn't looking forward going outside to try and disperse the crowd, but it has to be done. He still wonders what triggered all this.

"Oh, one more thing: why was the last person that visited so unhappy when she left?"

After Asha answers the question Roald tells Albert and the healer what he is about to do.

- Roald -

"OK..." Ahsa agrees, though she does not sound fully convinced. "But I am just sitting here and talking, so don't make too big a deal of it if they are very upset.

"Who? Oh, her?" She says when you ask about the woman. "Did she really look that unhappy?" She sounds concerned and almost starts to get up to go after her, but winces in pain and decides against it. "They are some group of women who want me and the captain to join their... 'social group'? I am not really sure what it is, they don't want to talk in detail till we are 'initiated'. She was the third person to try to recruit me, and I am finding it hard to come up with ways to tell them I am not interested." She really does sound unhappy that she has done something that made another upset.

She opens her mouth to say something else --about the women's group, you think-- but apparently decides against it, reaching for glass and taking a sip of wine instead.

What do you do?

"I was acting as a guide for the adventurers and isn't everyone a bit into sheperds!" Norbert responds with a big grin. "We haven't seen the girl and she is becoming more and more a mistery. They hoped someone here would help us to get back on the right trail. So if you know anything more about her we would gladly hear it."

Looking at the food in the baskets he asks: "Isn't that something you would save for winter or did you have so much to spare? The barons made it harder on most, I thought." After a short pause he adds: "Grandfather always told us that this used to be a prosperous valley in the old days. You know when everyone still talked to animals."

- Norbert -

"Ooh! Yes!" A few say, swooning, as you mention 'being into shepherds'.

"About all we know for sure is that 'she's not here.'" They agree after a brief confirmation. They bring up the obvious suspicion about the baron being away at just the right time (if you did not mention it, then they apparently heard that detail from someone else), but they don't have anything new to add to that line of enquiry.

When you broach the topic of the gifts everyone wants to talk at once and it is hard to make much sense: "It is worth it to get to see 'The Lady'." Is the general consensus. "But you know that. You work with her people."

There are nods of general agreement when you speak about things being better in your grandfather's time --"Anyway, ain't these adventurers fixing that?"-- though you lose a little support when you get to the part of 'talking to animals'.

Albert meets back up with Roald who is just coming out of Ahsa's room. "It sounds like the Mayor may not be very trust worthy when it comes to payments. We did have an agreement with him, didn't we? I mean, we didn't talk specifics, but..."

After exchanging what they both have heard so far, he mentions "We should go and tell all this to Norbert as well."
Feb 7, 2023 12:21 am
"Errrrr... I think he mentioned a reward, or did he? We might want to ask again when we see him"

Roald steps outside where he sees that Norbert is in the centre of the crowd asking and answering questions. He tries to get to him to tell him that he wants the people to go home. But only if Norbert is ready with gathering intel.

When Norbert is done, Roald raises his voice.

"Dear people, I just talked to the lady you are all here to see, and she is very very tired. To her deepest regret there will be no more visits today. I would like to ask you to go home. We would like to thank everyone for your generous gifts, you are all very kind, but please don't give us the food you will need for next winter, we can not accept such an offering. "
Roald takes a pause to let his words sink in.
"One more thing, as of tomorrow there will be a limit of 20 visits per day, the lady needs her rest, I hope you all understand. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts"
Feb 7, 2023 12:32 pm
None the wiser Nobert joins the men and tells them about the mistery that grows around "the Lady".

"There must be someone who knows a lot more than they are telling. I fell sometimes that allmost everyone knows more than they tell and they try to take advantage of the strangers to mix up the dungpit, like they say in the south."

"If it weren't for the you girl that seems to be abducted, I would say leave them to it. Than again, a lot of people here suffer because of the injustice of the Barons.
Feb 7, 2023 11:11 pm
Albert fills in Norbert about what they found out inside as well.

"I feel that way too, to be honest. It seems like people are so distrusting these days. How do they expect to get help when they hide important information?" He says while rubbing his eyes. What a long couple of days it's been.

"I'm happy to see that Asha is feeling alright. She still needs rest, but she seemed quite content at least." Albert spots the tavern a bit further down the street. "Hopefully the captain is fine too."

"So." He says in a way that implies 'enough of that'. "If we want to get to the baron today, we should get the stuff we need and head out." He realizes once again that he doesn't have his backpack at this point. "But I guess we'd need to find Theo first."
Feb 8, 2023 3:01 am
Unless he is avoiding his father --which Norbert can relate to-- probably the only place you can think to find Theo is at his father's house. Doing that and not getting roped into a time-consuming meeting with the mayor would be a challenge.
Feb 8, 2023 3:12 pm
"If we want to get your stuff back, we will have to get in touch with Theo. Maybe I can go there alone. The mayor doesn't know me and Theo will probably follow me to the Inn if I thell him you are there waiting for him."

"I just hope he is not wearing that ridiculous armour anymore" He adds wit a smile.
Feb 8, 2023 8:19 pm
"You'd do that for me?" Albert is charmed by Norbert's offer. "That would be so great. If I can do anything for you in return, just ask."

What a nice guy, that Norbert.
Feb 9, 2023 8:01 am
Roald also accepts Norbert's offer.

''We can not stay here too long if we want to get to the baron though''

The mayor does not invite you in, but is superficially polite --you suspect he vaguely recognises your face, but does not know if you are important.

"My son?" He says with more pride in his voice than usual. "He's not here. He has gone with the adventurers to rescue his sister." It does not sound like he has heard that 'the adventurers' are back in town yet, so he is not worried that Theo has not returned with them or come back on his own.

If you ask at Darryl's family you will get a similar story, though they care less about the mayor's daughter than about the armour he borrowed. They also have not heard from their son since he left.

If you ask, none can direct you to Phil's residence.

If you ask the 'gate guards', they have have not seen your friends come it.

Even though you were moving fairly fast, the trio left half a day before you, and you did not see any sign of them on the road here. They should have been back hours ago.

What do you do?
Feb 10, 2023 12:43 pm
After running around town for two hours he turns to the Inn and shares his findings with Roald and Albert. "I am a bit woried. I would understand the need to releave some stress from yeasterday, but I don't understand where they would have gone any other place to get drunk or so."
"Should we go looking for them?"
