Nathaniel is enjoying Benny's ramblin', when they come upon the camp. He looks at his companions, then makes way to a more open spot to see what everyone is gathered around.

The Lumber Camp | Nathaniel
Workin' your way through the crowd, Nathaniel, you'd find yourself looking looking at a man whose clearly a physician talking to rugged mountain type fella whose laying on a cot with his shoulder bandaged up.

Bennie Hudson
Benny, huffing and puffing catches up to Nathaniel. "What is it Nat?"

Lumber Camp Man
A man standing nearby notices Nathaniel's interest in the scene. He speaks to the youth in a deep grumble of a voice.

"He got mauled by a bear last night. Tore him up good, but the doc thinks he'll be alright." You'd know he's referencing the man who is laying on the cot.
Oct 19, 2022 2:07 am
Nathaniel wishes it was a bear but knows better. He walks up to the doctor and injured man, interrupting their conversation. "Excuse me sir, er, sirs." Looking at the injured man, with a sympathetic look on his face, "We think the same thing that attacked you also attacked the town last night. We were able to beat it away, but saw it heading toward this lumber camp last night. Is there anything at all you can tell us about what wounded you, where it might've gone to...?"
Oct 19, 2022 3:30 am
Jeremiah thinks for a moment, knowing what a good man would say but old habits would die hard. Instead, his frown grew at the man's insistence to put off the work to save the lives of many.

"Like my associate, Horace, here said, you might be calling us liars. There is something hunting men and women down and even if you don't believe it, the town does." His stomach tightens, upset that need calls upon old tactics. "If another man or woman is torn apart, it'll be because you didn't have the time. How is the town going to think of the man who could've helped them."
OOC:
It is a risk but we need that silvery goodness.
OOC:
I'll spend a benny on that.
OOC:
Welp. Fuck me. -_-

standing next to Nathanial solemnly looking at the wounded man knowing that unless we find a way to stop the beast there will certainly be more victims. In addition to Nathanial's questions - "can you tell us roughly what time you were attacked and how you managed to fend the beast off?"

He has a point don't you think? Do you want the responsibility of those deaths on your hands?

Lumber Camp | Nathaniel and Kaladin
Doctor
The Doc pushes his glasses up his nose and begins to roll down his sleeves. "Yes well...as I said before you two arrived--there seems to be barely a wound here at all...More likely this fellow fell walking drunk in the woods."

His voice doesn't drip disdain, but there's a nice coatin' that's for sure.

Wounded Man
The wounded man's mouth is agape as he listens to the Doc. "Then how do you account fer all the blood on my shirt! It was a gaper las' night I'm a sure of it!"

He calms a bit and turns to answer Nathaniel and Kaladin. "Well, it's like this see: I was strolling down the hill yonder (sure I had me a bottle but what I do after a day o'work ain't no one's concern but my own), an' I headed down to Creekwick Falls. I arrive just in time to see the largest buck I ever had the pleasure to lay eyes on..."

He stops his story to ask, "Say either of you have a drink? I'm mighty thirsty..."

Doctor
"I'm sure," he grumbles.

Wounded Man
"Anyway, I stand there watchin' the buck, just enjoyin' the night. Next thing I know, By Jiminy, I hear an un-Godly crashin' through the underbrush. Then I was bulled over by some massive, ringy creature! Luckily, it was after the buck and not me. I lay there watchin' it chow down on the buck, myself bleedin' like a poked pig...It's teeth musta got ahold o'me and ripped me good."

"I musta passed right out, because the next thing I knew it was daylight. I got up and stumbled back to camp..."

"Last I seen it...it was down at the falls."

The Blacksmith's | Horace and Jeremiah
OOC:
Ah! Despite Horace's good followin' roll we gotta stick with that crit fail!
James Hayes
Jeremiah, your argument touches somethin' within James Hayes. You can see it in his eyes--some past trauma perhaps.

But despite your well put words, the man is determined to resist. "I will not be to blame," he snarls. "Never again..." he mutters.

"You want my help? You go find my free-loadin' son an' get his sorry hide back here ta help me. Get his nose out of his books for a gol-darn minute. You do that an I'll have the man power to make you a few of your ridiculous bullets."

He turns to his hand operated bellows. "Now be off, will ya?"
Oct 20, 2022 5:56 pm
Nathaniel gives the doctor a frown at his callous nature toward the injured man, but quirks an eyebrow up at the mention of there barely being a wound. He finds it odd that the drunk man was seemingly spared from the beast's savage nature.
OOC:
I'd like to do a sense motive type roll on the wounded man, see if he's on the up and up.

Lumber Camp | Nathaniel
You can tell without a doubt that the wounded man is being earnest and not lying.
Oct 21, 2022 12:50 am
"Well then!" Horace says in a huff. "Let's get going and find this bookish son of yours. Where might he be? This son of yours?"

Horace never had much patience for men like Mr. Hayes, all full of arrogance and generally on the wrong side of logic.
Oct 21, 2022 2:56 am
The boy nods at the wounded man, "I hope you feel better, sir."

Looking at his traveling partners, "We should go check out the falls, see if we can find anything else. Mr. Hudson, if not too much trouble, can you take us there?"

James Hayes
Shrugs. "He ain't right. Sometimes he walks in the pines. Reads under trees an' all that. Sometimes he talks to the lumberjacks up in the camps."

The Lumber Camp | In Answer to Nathaniel
Bennie Hudson
"Sure Nat. I think I can find my way."

He leads the way off in to the woods, talkin' about the time his spent in Dodge City...

Bennie Hudson
..."and then I threw the gun at his head, 'cause it had no bullets in it anyway. Ah we're here."

Indeed, 20 minutes later you find yourself at the forest pool. The sound of the waterfall thrumming in your ears. The air feels wet and misty.

Sure enough, in at the side of the pool is a large, tore up buck, its blood staining the muddy ground round it.

after watching the wounded man for a little too long and getting lost in his thoughts, Kaladin follows Nathaniel and Bennie a small distance behind them towards the sound of the waterfall. Looking around the area and at buck for any signs of what happened here and wondering what the man was doing here by the water....

The Blacksmith's Shop | Horace

"Nothing wrong with that. Reading is a wonderful pursuit. The world might be a better place if more people did it," says Horace in that sometimes pedantic way of his.

"You might thank me some day for saving your sorry .... ah nevermind," Horace heads off toward the woods without finishing his sentence. No point in angering the man anymore than he already had.

Among the Pines, at the Pool | Nathaniel an' KaladinNothin' stands out to either of you 'bout the gruesome, yet serene scene.

The buch appears to have had its neck torn in to with some mighty large jaws, then it's belly eaten from. Flys buzz round the carcus.

Neither of your woodcraft abilities indicates which way the attacker could have come from, or could have gone.

But there are two obvious ways regardless--uphill farther in to the hills, or downhill back toward the town.
OOC:
What do you two think of what you've found? What do you do now?
Oct 25, 2022 12:25 am
Edge of Town | Horace
Townsfolk watch you pass with suspicions looks as you make your way to the swaying pine ridge, Jeremiah in tow.

Jeremiah
"I hope your woodcraft is better than mine old-timer." He tries to give you a smile.

Your at the edge of the wood now. The wind in the trees set the boughs to groaning something fierce.
OOC:
What does Horace do? How does he approach the forest and his search?
Oct 25, 2022 1:47 am
The boy covers his mouth and holds back the sickness trying to rise from his stomach, at the site of the torn animal. Between that and not knowing where the beast might've gone, he kicks the ground in frustration, "I can't make heads or tails where it might've gone!" Looking at Kaladin, "Looks like you're not faring much better. Maybe we should bring Mr. Cross down here, he looks like he might be more experienced in these matters?"

As Nathaniel says that, he sees the path going up farther into the hills. "Hmm, since we're already here maybe we should go up the path a bit more. If we don't find anything soon, let's head back and meet up with the others. Perhaps they'll have better news."
