The Two Barons (RP)

Aug 25, 2022 10:19 pm
Continued from The wind in her hair

The past few days have been hard on you all. Did you lie in and catch up on some rest this morning? --there is no time pressure to deal with the 'barons', but the innkeeper will have had to work to keep people from waking you earlier, and the locals --still as exited to see you this morning as they were yesterday-- were all waiting to share their opinions on how you should approach your task.

Breakfast was good, and plentiful, and the innkeeper has packed you lunch. After your recent bout of dehydration, it would not be surprising if you found yourselves carrying a bit more water than you really need.

The 'guard' bows low as she lets you out the gate --maybe hoping for a gratuity for the service-- and the morning (if it is still 'morning') is nice and warm. You are sure Ahsa would be gushing about its "beauty" or somesuch, but she was still abed if you checked.

As you approach the forest's edge (hopefully without traumatic memories) you spot a group of people on the road. You can identify the tall form of Daryl by his armour and helem --all now gleaming in the sunlight, and smelling strongly of polish.

Daryl's companions are: --you may be surprised to discover-- the mayor's son, carrying what you guess is his father's hunting crossbow and dagger; a smaller, quiet boy wearing ill-fitting leathers and a leather helmet, who appears to be constantly trying to hide behind Theuderic (Jr.); and two older men, armed only with pitchforks.

What do you do?

Are they standing there waiting for us, or are they in front of us heading the same direction?
Aug 27, 2022 2:06 pm
After a quick visit to the healer's hut to check on Asha, Albert is ready to head out and meet with one of the barons. He grabs his equipment and tries to get some rations from the innkeep, spending some silver, if need be. "Are you good to go, Roald? I'm not sure how far we'll need to walk to find Baron Childberg. That was his name, right?"
OOC:
If Roald wants to do something before leaving the town, Albert will join him.
Albert is surprised to see Daryl with some kind of entourage at the forest edge. "Daryl? What are you doing here?" He says from a distance, giving a friendly wave, then turns to Roald to talk privately now that that's still possible. "Isn't that the son of the mayor next to him? They seem to be waiting on something or someone."
Aug 28, 2022 3:56 am
'' well, well, what do we have here. Did you round up some friends to help you on your quest Daryl?''
Roald takes a look at the weird bunch. One of the older men has a look on his face that suggests he'd rather be somewhere else.
'' Can any of you knights point us in the direction of baron Childebert's house?''
OOC:

Roald is making fun of them but not in an unfriendly way. More like a father would speak to his son. As if he is a bit impressed but doesn't want to show it
Aug 28, 2022 4:39 am
"Er... well." Daryl says sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck before remembering his role and dropping to one knee before the heroes. "I needed to find the scriptures to get 3 of the virtues of battle: --know you men--" He sates, motioning to the people with him. "--know your ... er... enemy... um... opposition... um, you in this case?... um... so I predicted you would be coming this way and set up here in your path--" He sounds rather proud of that. "--and know yourself--"

He takes a deep breath at this last one. "I know I can't actually read, so I had to also find someone who could read the scriptures to me. I called upon the aid of Theo," me motions to Theuderic, "but we needed help with some of it and... Phil? was it?" He enquires from the small figure behind 'Theo'. "Would only translate if we promised to bring him with us."

Daryl is almost quivering with pride at what he has accomplished in the hours since you assigned him his quest.
Aug 28, 2022 4:40 am
- Norbert -

How did you fall in with this group? Did they need your help with any of the quest?
You don't think you know Phil. But what can you tell us about the other two older men in the group? Did they come with you, or try to talk you out of- or into- coming yourself?

How do you introduce yourself, or did Daryl introduce you? (Narrate it as much as you like.)
Aug 28, 2022 2:53 pm
There is a lot of talk in the town about the two adventurers who will rid us of our struggles with the barons. The mayor sent the two older guys along to keep an eye on Daryl and "Theo" and maybe even Roald and Albert. The two older men share Norberts view that the two adventurers are maybe a little too good to be true with their undead horses and centipede-sized undead.
Daryl introduced Norbert and the two men with a wave of his hand as "a few townsfolk to accompany us". The dog growled a bit but fell quiet as soon as Norbert snapped his fingers.
"Don't mind us kind sirs, we will keep out of your way and help where we can."

Afterwards he keeps closer to the two older men and sometimes jokes and laughs with them.
Aug 28, 2022 3:24 pm
"Well done, Daryl." Albert smiles at the speedy accomplishment of the boy. Seems like, he's not just messing around. That's for sure. "And it looks like you've put theory into practice, as well. I must admit that I am impressed." He looks at the others and nods to them amicably. "I believe introductions are in order. I am Albert, and this is Roald."
OOC:
@fossball; What does the dog look like?
Albert's description is in his character sheet.
Aug 29, 2022 7:07 am
''Nice to meet you all. If everyone is ready, we just as well can start moving and get to know each other on the way.

You can take the lead, Daryl. ''
Aug 29, 2022 7:17 am
"Yes sir!" Daryl says standing to attention and putting on his helmet.

Theo's bodyguards look uncomfortable and unsure about their job. The dog especially makes them nervous, and they seem to be struggling to decide how they can both stay far away from the dog and still 'protect' their charge from it.

Phil reaches out a tentative hand to the dog, making Theo look quite worried.

Norbert: How does your dog respond to Phil? Why is that unusual?
Aug 29, 2022 2:04 pm
The dog, a fluffy longhaired sheepdog (Samson if you grew up in Belgium in the last 30 years), sniffs Phils hand, looks at Norbert and since there is no reaction from Norbert settles himself back at Norberts feet.
"She is a sweet girl if you don't startle her." Norbert says. If Norbert would have given a sign Phil would have lost a finger and maybe Theo has heard stories of sheepdog driving off bears when protecting their flock.
Once on the road Norbert stays in the back and lets the dog run off to the sides. Every so often the dog pops back up for a few pets and is off again. A few seconds after a short whistle the dog sits at Norberts feet.
Norbert is happy to chat with anybody during the walk.
Aug 29, 2022 2:14 pm
Phil seems very enamoured by the dog, and would have very much wanted to play with her if not for Theo's protectively restraining hand and warning shake of his head.

"What's her name?" Phil asks in a small, but high and clear voice?

Daryl sets off, his long legs carrying him at a pace that the older or shorter of you might find hard to maintain.
Aug 29, 2022 3:13 pm
Roald looks at Albert from the corner of his eye. His friend is clearly struggling a bit with the high pace. He decides to act before Albert's lungs start acting up.
He walks up to Daryl and says in a low voice.
''Say, Daryl, let's make sure we don't get to the baron all sweaty and smelly. I love your enthousiasm, but just a little bit slower will get us there in better shape.''
Aug 29, 2022 3:26 pm
"What? Oh!" Daryl says looking around apparently realising for the first time how big he's gotten.

"Oh, er, yes." He agrees. "Of course. But... if we want to get there and back before dark..." He sounds worried about being out of the village at night.
Aug 29, 2022 9:44 pm
Albert is trying his best to keep up, but the pace is pretty high once Daryl gets going. He's glad when Roald heads to the front and distracts Daryl with a few questions, causing him to slow down a bit. At least that's what he thinks happened.

With Roald at the front, he decides to walk next to Norbert "So, Norbert, what made you join Daryl on this journey to the barons?" He asks in a friendly way. "That's a sheepdog, isn't it? Are you on your way to a flock?"
Aug 30, 2022 6:38 pm
To Phil: "She doesn't have a name. I just call her dog. Doe you like dogs?"

The he turns to Albert: "I'm not really with Daryl... I kind of hoped to tag along with you guys. You two are the most exciting thing that happend in our town for, like forever." Norbert looks Albert straight in the eyes. "Are you real adventurers? Can you get me out of this town? I can take care of myself, I won't give you any trouble."
Aug 30, 2022 6:48 pm
- Norbert -

"I was never allowed. But I always wanted a pet   dog." Phil says, though there is the slightest of pauses that suggest he was maybe indicating a desire for a 'pet' and specified 'dog' only to appease you.
Aug 30, 2022 8:34 pm
"Well, yes, I guess we are. But let me tell you, it hasn't been a life of glamour and roses so far. See this?" Albert says in a warning voice as he shows Norbert a big rip in his clothing. "A skeleton sliced my cloak with the end of a short sword. I could have been a goner, were it not for my friends." He's not so much trying to scare Norbert, as he is checking to see what drives him.

"If you're serious about it, let's see how you handle things on our road to the barons." He gives Norbert an encouraging wink. "Of course, I'll have to talk it over with Roald and the others, first."
Aug 31, 2022 4:35 am
''I wouldn't worry to much Daryl, we're a big group. And if there are bandits on the road they will think twice when they see your armour. Or is it the wild beasts that hunt in these forests that are troubling you?''
Roald keeps a straight face and doesn't look Daryl in the eye.
When he sees Daryl's face turn pale he decides he should stop teasing him.

''HAHAHAHA, I'm sorry,... It will be fine Daryl, I'm just teasing you. Are you any good with that sword? Maybe we can practice a bit while the others rest?''

This gives Roald the chance to assess his companion's skill, or teach him some basics.
OOC:
@fossball. Roald is the son of a butcher, used to work with sharp objects.
Aug 31, 2022 5:31 am
- Roald -

Daryl swells with pride at your comment about his intimidating armour, but his sweaty face does turn pale under his helmet at your question.

"It's just... you know. You hear stories about 'things'." He admits. "But I know they are just stories to scare little children into being good." It does not sound at all like he 'knows' that, but your joking attitude does not allow his ego to admit otherwise.

You can his see mind working at your question about sword use, but he apparently settles upon honesty (there is 'virtue' in honesty and honest assessment). "I have never used it." He admits, hanging his head. "My father will be so angry when he finds I have taken it." There is a pleading note to his voice, as if to say 'please don't send me back home as anything other than a hero'.

Your promise of lessons brightens his mood a lot. "You just 'stick them with the pointy bit'." He asserts, drawing the sword and showing you that he at least knows which end that is.

What do you do?
Aug 31, 2022 2:16 pm
He nods nervously to Albert.

Norbert makes eye-contact with the dog and nods toward Phil. The Dog playfully skips over to Phil and will tolerate being petted while they walk. "I like dogs much better than cats. Why can't you have a pet?

After a while he goes closer to Albert again. "Sorry about my outburst earlier, I am a bit excited. I live on a farm, am the youngest son and wil never be free when I stay there. I understand that it can be rough out there, but I'm used to standing my ground. My flock would often be harassed by wolves and bears. And together with my dog we always chased them off."

"Did you really encounter skeletons? Was is dark wizard that made them rise? How did you beat them?"
Aug 31, 2022 2:25 pm
- Norbert -

Theo looks on nervously at first as Phil delightedly scratches and and pats the dog and explains. "Daddy..." He starts to say then blushes and starts again. "Father would not have them in the house." Phil shrugs.
Aug 31, 2022 7:01 pm
"Yes, we did encounter them. And almost didn't live to tell the tale." Albert confirms in a stern way. "How we beat them? Well, I didn't, really. It was Raynor who did that with me as a conduit. However, I'm not entirely sure I'm still in his favor at the moment." He says as he sighs.

"Anyway, ..." It's obvious that Albert wants to change subjects. "What do you mean, you will never be free? The life of a sheep herder isn't that of a prisoner, is it?"
Sep 1, 2022 3:00 pm
Norbert is clearly curious about the skeletons and the influence of Raynor, but leaves it at that ... for now.
My eldest brother will inherit the farm and I could probably stay on and live and work there for the rest of my life. I would be free to stay in these lands, with these people and these sheep for the rest of my life. Every day, until I die.
He looks into the distance for a short while and turns to Albert again.
I love my family, but they don't understand that there is more to this world than what they know. And that the unknown isn't always bad.
Even tough it clearly isn't always good either.
Norbert says with a sigh.
Sep 1, 2022 8:38 pm
"Ah, I get what you mean." Albert nods. "To be perfectly honest, I didn't know much about life outside the city either until a few weeks ago, when my bar burned down." He looks at his staff for a bit, focussing on Raynor's symbol. "But that lead me to wonders, although scary ones, that I've never imagined before. And it reconnected me with one of the gods, not to mentions the new friends I have acquired along the way."

"You know what, if you don't count the dehydration, undead monstrosities and constant fear of death, it's been a pretty wonderful few weeks." Albert laughs, making it seem like he's exaggerating jokingly. If only Norbert knew how true that statement is. He may reconsider. But who am I to crush a boy's dream?
Sep 2, 2022 7:54 am
'' That is a good place to start Daryl'' Roald smiles.
'' I'll teach you some moves when the time is right.''

As they walk, the scenery changes from fields to hollow Roads lined by trees. A nice place for an ambush, better keep my eyes open.

Roald walks in silence now, watching the trees and the dogs behavior.
Sep 2, 2022 8:00 am
- Roald -

Daryl stops and takes off his metal helmet. His hair is plastered to his head and his face if very red and sweaty.

"Is this working right?" He asks, mopping face and trying to fan some air into his armour.
Sep 2, 2022 8:22 am
'' Hehe, the downside of plate armour, smoking hot or icy cold. No in betweens. You might want to keep that helmet on until we are back in the fields. How long till we reach our destination Daryl? ''
Sep 4, 2022 2:56 pm
With two quick taps on his leg and a short whistle, Norbert sends the dog up on the right side of the road. If there is no reaction Norbert will whistle two times in short succession and the dog should cross to the other side.

Norbert looks over to Roald, frowns and raises his shoulders with a question in his eyes.
Sep 4, 2022 3:25 pm
Phil looks crestfallen as the dog darts off to the right.

"Oh! That's a relief!" Daryl exclaims to Roald. "I was worried that I was just a wimp. It was sooo cold last night, and I hoped that that armour would now keep me cool today but it is like an oven in here!"

Reluctantly putting his helmet back on, Daryl looks around to get his bearings. "We are almost there." He declares, this statement --and his others-- confirmed by nods from the other locals. "Just after that ugly clump of trees --as kids we used to always pretend they were demons, and dare each other to run past them--" he admits sheepishly, "...after that we will be in Childebert" (he pronouces it chill-der-bert) "fields and can see their 'castle'." (You can literally hear the scoffing inverted commas around 'castle').

Die of Fate - (1d6)

Sep 4, 2022 3:38 pm
The 'evil trees' of childhood-fancy look like nothing more than that. You round the bend past them, and the forest opens up to fields that look like they have not been tended for some years. Shoulder high stalks of wheat surround you in irregular patterns, and the din of birds erupting before you is enough to make anyone jump (Phil clings to Theo's arm, panting in shock).

The wheat has grown over the road as well, and Daryl bravely draws his sword and starts slashing his way through --though that is not strictly speaking 'necessary' as it is not that thick on the road that you can't push past.

Far away over the waving heads of wheat you see a rough fortification --similar to that of the village-- around a manor house that looks like, at one time, it was rather impressive by local standards.

Travel via the overgrown road will no be much faster than cutting though the field, and takes you on a long loop round to the baron. Neglected as the fields are, you can guess the baron might not care too much if you took a 'short-cut'.

What do you do?
Sep 5, 2022 9:27 pm
"We're probably better off using the road. The baron may take offense to us cutting through the field. Does anyone else have a sword to cut a way through?" Albert offers.

He looks at the manor across the field. "So that's where he lives huh?" Albert pulls his backpack a bit higher up over his shoulders. "Do you think he'll receive us happily? he asks, mostly directed at Daryl, but not obviously so.
Sep 5, 2022 9:32 pm
"They are supposed to offer succor to travellers." Theo offers, but he sounds dubious. "Not sure how you would persuade him to listen to you, though."
Sep 5, 2022 9:40 pm
OOC:
vagueGM says:
succor
had to look that word up ;)
"I guess we will soon find out." He thinks for a bit. "If possible, maybe we should speak to the locals first. See what's been going on lately."
Sep 7, 2022 10:32 pm
"Come to think of it, ..." Albert says as they cut through the overgrown road. "We did already hear some talk of the barons in town. You lot can probably tell fact from fiction better than we can." he gestures to everyone except Roald. "Is it true that the two barons are actually brothers?"
OOC:
as we've talked about in ooc, this isn't a true rumor. But a setup for Fossball to chime in with info.
Sep 8, 2022 12:28 pm
Norbert lets out a short laugh: "Ha they aren't brothers!" He looks around and continues with a little bit more control. "My father used to say there were two twin brothers who didn't get along and divided their lands and all their belongings. Since the schism the families have been fighting each other for four generations. But in the end, the all came from the same womb."

He looks around the group and looks Albert straight in the eyes and says: "I have heard from other people that the twins didn't have the same father. One of them had the old Baron as sire, but the other was sired by ... a magic user."
Sep 8, 2022 2:34 pm
"A magic user? Some kind of mage?" Albert shudders at the thought. Magic has always been a dangerous thing. Only the Gods were to be trusted with it, really.

"Well, if they have a common ancestor, that might be useful to resolve their dispute."
Sep 8, 2022 2:40 pm
"Do you think so?" Theo ask in response to Albert's last. "My father has not spoken to his brother in... well, not ever that I have seen. And we are not allowed even mention him in our house. Family feuds run deep."
Sep 8, 2022 10:11 pm
Roald turns his head when he hears the word "magic". "Nothing good ever comes by using magic" he mumbles as he carries on clearing the road for the others to walk a bit more easely.
" This is a good moment to learn to use that sword of yours Daryl. Try to copy my movements as I cut down the weeds, I will do it in such a way that it will be useful in battle"

" What a waste of resources, look at all the grain not being harvested. I wonder if people are happy living here, it sure doesn't look like it anyway."
OOC:
trying (as a player) to steer the conversation towards the resistance
Sep 9, 2022 10:55 pm
"Roald is right. If magic is involved we need to be twice as careful." Albert agrees.

"How's it going with clearing the road, guys?"
Sep 10, 2022 11:14 am
Norbert is happily hacken away at the brushes "Wy would they let the road get so overgrown? Don't they still trade with our village?" he asks Theo
Sep 10, 2022 3:12 pm
"Recently? I think they've been more concerned about preventing us from trading with the Chlodomers." Theo guesses.

"But how long does it take for this sort of overgrowth?" He asks the group, he, himself, not knowing much about farming or anything outside the village. Anyone with any experience with wheat would be able to guess that this is a lot more than one season's growth --unless someone was deliberately spreading seed onto the road. "We got some wagons from them last autumn."
Sep 12, 2022 6:42 pm
Norbert: Even over the noise of the road clearing activities and the clanking of Daryl's armour and his laboured breathing, you --with the help of your dog-- hear the sounds of people moving up ahead, and can warn your companions.

From the crest of a hill you can see the baron's palisade again and, now that you are closer, you also spy a militia of what look like farmers forming up as though to assault the fortifications. They are armed with typical-seeming farmers' improvised weapons, and don't appear to know what they are doing.

You can suspect that they have, surprisingly, gone unnoticed by the baron's people so far, or is it that the baron does not think them a threat worth any attention?

It looks like whatever action they are planning/hoping for is imminent, and they are all on edge. Startling them may be a bad idea.

What do you do?
Sep 13, 2022 4:33 pm
"Everybody be quiet." Norbert whispers forcefully. "There is something going on up ahead and it doesn't look to peacefull."

Norbert looks around to see if there is a way to sneak closer to the mob without them noticing it.
Sep 13, 2022 4:43 pm
- Norbert -

While clanking 'knights' like Daryl would find it impossible to sneak up on the group ahead, you can be fairly confident that your skills are well up to the task. You would need to ask the two newcomers whether they posses such skills, and the two bodyguards are unlikely to want to leave Theo --though they look like they might be moderately capable of some such things (in a general 'farmerly' way)-- and Theo is a pampered 'city-noble' and quite out of his comfort zone in these 'wilds'. Phil looks small and quick, and his movements when playing with your dog indicated some ability, he is probably your best bet, but seems to be 'attached' to Theo and may not be willing to venture out.

What do you do?
Sep 13, 2022 7:25 pm
"I am going to have a closer look." He says when he has their attention. "You men wait here while I sneak up to them".
Het says "Stay" to the dog, who trots over to Phil to lie down at his feet.

He look over the group for a few breaths to see if there are any who want to follow him.
Sep 13, 2022 7:27 pm
Phil crouches down to snuggle with the dog. "Be careful." He says tentatively to Norbert.
Sep 13, 2022 8:20 pm
Albert, who was keeping an eye on their rear while the guys hacked at the road, turns around when Norbert seems to have spotted something up ahead.

"You? Alone?" He quietly asks. He's still wondering whether this kid with his dog is ready for the real world. Should Albert try to shelter him from it? No, best to let the lad find his own way.

"Come back quickly and yell if you get into trouble."

Then Albert gets closer to the others so they can talk without making too much noise. "Do you think the baron's guards could be looking for us?" He asks Theo.
Sep 13, 2022 8:27 pm
- Albert -

"What?! Why would they be?" Theo asks, surprised by the question, and clearly never having considered it till now.

He hops slightly to see above the waving heads of wheat and confirm. "Aren't those guys facing the wrong way if they are the baron's guards? They are focused inward on the manor house, not outward towards us."
Sep 14, 2022 12:31 pm
''I'll come with you Norbert. ''

They leave the road and head into the overgrown field. Roald crouches so his head won't stick out. As stealthy as possible he moves forward. Roald whispers. '' there is a small hill just straight ahead, we might have a better view from up there. ''
The 'hill' is only a slight elevation in the field, but could make for a nice vantage point if they carefully remove some of the wheat .

Norbert moves like small rodent up the hill. If you did not see him leave you would have lost him after a few strides into the brush. Roald will have to be carefull not to lose track of Norbert.

Once the reach the high ground he stops and whispers to Roald: "They don't look friendly, but I don't think they know we are at their back. What do you think they are up to?"
Sep 14, 2022 6:28 pm
- Norbert -

You have a passing familiarity with most of the residents of this area. Even at this distance you probably recognise some/most of the people forming up below as local farmers, not that that helps at all towards answering your question about what they are doing.

• Who among that group stands out to you, and why?
• Who are you surprised to see down there?
• Who do you think might be the leader, and do you think speaking to them might be a good or bad idea?
Sep 14, 2022 7:15 pm
"That's odd." Albert responds to Theo's remark. "Did you see if they have weapons?"
Sep 14, 2022 7:23 pm
- Albert -

Theo bounces up again to take a look. "Bows and hoes?" He replies. "So... no?" He puts forward the idea that these are not real weapons, but bar brawls have taught you that anything can be a weapon in the right hands, and a stick with metal on the end is a scary thing to face.
Sep 14, 2022 7:50 pm
"Let's wait and listen until Roald and Norbert get back." He grabs the stick from his back. "Be ready to strike, in case we need to." Albert intentionally doesn't phrase this as a question, intentionally. If it comes to a dangerous situation, he can't afford for them to freeze.
Sep 15, 2022 3:19 pm
"Hey, I know some of those men.", Norbert says on closer inspection. "Most of them are farmers from our town. Olaf Adams is the big guy in the middle. He was the first te lose his lands to one of those Barons. He is a bit daft, but I wouldn't want to get on his bad side. His brother, Christian, on the other hand is a bit quicker on the pickup."

Norbert looks over to Roald. "They look pretty on edge, I would be careful to just go up to them and surprise them. Maybe if we make a lot of noise and send Theo to the front they won't be too startled. They definitly know him as the son of the mayor. They will probably respect him... I guess."
Sep 15, 2022 4:34 pm
'' that's a good plan Norbert, let's head back and tell the others what we saw. I hope we will be back in time to intercept the jolly bunch over there''

Roald returns to his friends, crawling at first, crouching when there is some distance between them.
Getting back is easier, the wheat is already flat and the path is clear.
When they rejoin the others, Roald raises his voice.

'' Listen up everybody, Norbert knows some of the men, Theo too probably, but he suggests we don't sneak up on them.

Roald loosens Daryl's armor just a little bit.

''There, that should make us noisy enough''

He glances at Albert to check if he approves.
''Would you like to lead Theo? ''
Sep 15, 2022 6:43 pm
"Me!?" Theo squeaks, his voice breaking from nerves and making him blush. "Oh, er. Yeah." He declares trying to sound confident as he remembers who he is and what his father would say in such a situation.

There is a bit of jostling for position as Daryl --looking exhausted-- drops back in relief, only to have Theo look confusedly at the cut wheat behind and the standing wheat in front. Theo's hunting knife will not do much good clearing the way. His farmer-bodyguards shake their heads in silent scorn at all this cutting. They have just been pushing through the standing stalks and letting their ward walk the cut path.

You can continue the tiring work of cutting the path, or spread the lesser effort and have everyone just push through, or maybe you can go back to cutting right at the end to make more noise and create a more impressive entrance for the village's mayor's son. However you do it, it is easy enough to make enough noise to make it clear you are not sneaking up on anyone. Given that they are apparently trying to go unnoticed by the baron, too much noise from you could spoil their plan, or make them angry that you risked doing so.

"What? Really?" Theo asks in response to Norbert's declaration. He sounds like this is very much a surprise to him, but assumes that the shepherd knows more than he.

Before there is time to question things further, the two bodyguards part the wheat and Theo finds himself face to face with the 'farmers resistance' for the first time. There is an exclamation of surprise, and someone shouts: "It's the mayor's whelp! Get him!" before Christian --resorting to using his bigger brother to squish dissent-- shushes everyone. "See!" He proclaims. "I told you all we had 'a man inside'." He strides forward and embraces a startled looking Theo. "Welcome brother, to The Resistance! Your help so far has been invaluable. But I am glad you have decided to join us in person."

Theo looks a bit confused by all this, but does not contradict these burly men and speaks words of general acknowledgement. He is enjoying being the center of attention, and has sort of stolen your thunder.

Sep 20, 2022 6:49 am
Roald speaks softly with Albert.
'' Strange. I would've never suspected Theo to be part of a resistance. And why didn't he tell us about it?''
Then after a moment.
'' Maybe it's his father who is supporting the uprising, Theo looks as surprised as we are.''
Sep 20, 2022 8:41 am
"I guess he was playing dumb this whole time." Albert whispers back. "I thought he was here against his will, but it seems I was wrong."

"It could have been his father. Surely it's been with his father's resources." He concludes. "You're right, his reaction is strange."

Then Albert also steps forward. "The resistance? Theo, can you tell us what's going on?"
Sep 20, 2022 9:21 am
"I have no idea what they are talking about." Theo answer Albert quietly out of the corner of his mouth while trying to maintain a comradely smile with the farmers who are all shaking him by the hand. "I don't know these people ... except as names on a page."

His desperation to not let them hear this suggests he is being truthful to you, at least you can't see any real way he could continue to bluff you that is he is not involved nor why he would feel the need to after the reception he just got. It does not look like you will have an easy time getting a private conversation with him, though his 'bodyguards' appear well acquainted with most of the farmers here, and are happily greeting people by name and have definitely let their guard down.

Albert moves among the resistance and nods to familiar faces. Once he gets to Olaf he asks in a conversational manner "We seem to be just in time. What is the plan?"
Sep 20, 2022 8:47 pm
The real Albert :P looks around at his companions and sees nothing but confused faces. This calls for some bar-keep charm, I guess.
"Ah, but of course. That resistance. Yes, how very nice to meet all of you." He puts on a big smiles as he joins in on the hand shaking that's going on. "Theo mentioned that we would be meeting up. Isn't that right, Theo?" Without giving Theo a chance to respond he continues. "Yes, of course it is. Haha!" He pats Theo on the shoulder at this point. "Well, I'm Albert. This is Roald, Norbert, ..." He introduces everyone and nods when the resistance does their own introduction.

"Now, one thing I'm not too sure about. Theo was a bit mysterious about the details, you see. Probably to make sure nobody could snitch." Albert says, looking very serious now. "But, uhm... What are you fellas waiting here for?"
OOC:
I'm not sure if we are supposed to be quiet or not, but if anyone signals to Albert to talk quietly, he does so. Albert would probably be able to read it from the vibe of the situation.

"Ah, yes. The mercenaries your father hired." Olaf says to Theo as he greets the newcomers. "I didn't expect to see them here with us, but I suppose it makes sense under the circumstances."

Theo nods, doing his best to pretend he knows what is going on, mainly just agreeing with everything everyone says.

"We have been watching ever since the news came, and no one has left the 'castle'." Olaf states. "We were just about to go in and get her." He informs Theo. "And we are real glad to have professional fighters to show us how it is done." There might be the slightest hint of scorn in that last part, by reputation Olaf feels he always knows better than most how to do anything.

You can see several farmers are carrying jars of oil along with their torches and pitchforks. They look about ready to move out and enact their plan.

"Kidnapping is dirty business." One of the older farmers says to Theo with a sad shake of his head. "But they are 'nobles', so what can you do?"
Sep 22, 2022 8:04 am
Roald is hesitant about the way things are evolving.
'' Could you walk us through the plan? Maybe our experience will come in handy.''
'' Do you know the lay-out of the building? Or how well it is guarded?''
Sep 23, 2022 3:01 am
"We are hoping so." Olaf replies to Roald's suggestion that the heroes may come in handy.

"No time to go through it again." He exclaims. "The river-side force are launching their attack." You can hear sounds of a banging from the other side of the compound. "EVERYBODY MOVE!" He shouts to the farmers around you as he rushes off to lead the charge.

As the mass surges towards the gate Christian tries to answer the other questions, motioning with his hands to illustrate: "There is the main manor house on this side. We will be coming in from its back-side, but need to pass the scullery and servants quarters before we get there. We think most of the guards live on the other side, and hopefully Brendan's attack keeps their focus there. We should outnumber the guards by at least three-to-one, but they have proper weapons, so we will need your help." He is talking mainly to Roald and Daryl with their swords and armour.

"We don't know where she is, but we will keep going till we find her." This last bit seems to be addressed to Theo for some reason.

By this time the farmers have pulled the gate off its hinges --enough to get through-- but one of them is on the ground, groaning with a crossbow bolt sticking from his leg. You can faintly hear a guard above the gate shouting for help, but these shouts continue, suggesting they have not been heard yet over the commotion on the other side.

Sep 23, 2022 8:02 am
Norbert kneels next to the farmer with the bolt in his leg. He uses the farmers belt to make a tourniquet. "Always wear a belt, my fathers says". As he yanks the bolt out of the leg.
He helps the man to his feet and asks: "can you get yourself to safety?"
Sep 23, 2022 8:55 am
- Norbert -

"That sounds like the sort of thing he would say." The injured farmer smiles and pats your hand after you have pulled the shaft from his leg. He looks slightly surprised to see you here as he did not think you were with the resistance, but also does not count you as one of the 'heroes' everyone is talking about --the burden of being around people who probably knew you when you were a kid.

"Yes. I can manage." He says limping away, his hoe under one arm as a crutch and his other hand clutching his pants to stop them from falling all the way down. He looks more relieved to be getting out of the fight than upset about the bloody leg, these farmers are tough people, but few have seen real violence.

You can hear the guard above preparing another shot.

Sep 24, 2022 6:49 pm
Norbert looks the guard straight in the eyes. "You still have time to get away." He says while he gets to his feet. "Listen to the sound from the other gate! Your side is losing and the mayor will be more mercyfull than the Baron ever was."
OOC:
I am not sure I am allowed to write the next part like this. I still struggle to feel the limit of what the players can put into the game and where we have to ask or wait for the GM. I feels way to much for my regular games.
The guard hesitates for a few second. He sighs and brings the but of the bow to his shoulder. In that moment he sees a black and white whirlwind in the corner of his eyes and feels the flesh of his forearm being ripped apart. He gets dragged to the ground, loses grip on the crossbow and stumbles to the ground. When he rolls to his knees he sees the dog dart away. Nearby he hears a sharp whistle and when he gets to hes feet the young boy is gone.

Drawing his axe, Norbert follows the mob deeper into the house where he soon is joined by the dog.
Sep 24, 2022 7:53 pm
Roald sees the peasants, Norbert, Theo... Engaging the fight.
He doesn't have the same urge to join the fight as in the Temple when his friends were in danger, then it came automatically. Protecting and helping his new companions feels more like a responsibility at this point.
But all the same, he draws his sword and runs after Norbert at a distance of 20 meters.

Albert sees Norbert running to the aid of the hurt farmer. A guy with a good heart. Are his thoughts as he watches him send the farmer on his way back home. Then he runs over to Norbert and gives him a nod that says "I respect your course of action.". Looking down, he sees the wooden board that the stricken man had put down to tug at the gates. He picks it up and raises it to shield him from the guards.

"Who is leading this attack?" Albert asks a random farmer who takes advantage of Albert's shield to catch his breath. It can't be the people we met, cause the attack started without them.
Sep 25, 2022 5:35 am
The courtyard is filled with scared looking workers --men, women, and children-- all going about their daily routine before being invaded. There appears to be no opposition between you and the manor house, the back door stands open, held that way by a butter churn.

The farmer looks confused as he answers Albert. "Is this a test?" He asks. "You are leading this... sir?"

Something prickles the backs of the adventurers minds. Something here is not what it seems.

What do you do?

Albert blinks. How can we be leading if we just arrived? What's going on? A 'tink' on his wooden board snaps him out of this thinking state. He has to move from this dangerous position.

"You planned all this?" Daryl says, sounding impressed since you only get here yesterday.
Sep 26, 2022 4:51 pm
''Albert, Norbert, ... I have no idea what's going on. Should we just go with the flow? This feels like a trap of some sort.''

Albert feels as confused as Roald is. "We didn't plan any of this. I was hoping to have a nice chat with the baron." He doesn't know what else to say. Then he remembers Daryl's words and their mutual belief in Raynor. Raynor must be handing me another test. A way to redeem myself after running from the temple. The conquest to enter the baron's domain and capture the lady.

He gets a bit of a smile on his face. "Raynor has not forsaken us, friends." He grabs his staff from his back and drops the make-shift shield to wield it. Now, let's not make the same mistake I did last time. I need some time to think. The sentence from the farmer pops up again in his mind. So, we are the leaders, huh? He looks at Roald and Norbert. "Well, if we're in charge, we better act like it, I suppose."

"Hey, you two." He shouts at two resistance members not far away. "Protect Roald and Norbert. Take them to where she is." Then he turns to Theo. "Theo, you and your guards stick with me for a bit. We need to figure some stuff out. We will catch up with the others after."

"Any objections?" Albert asks in an authoritative, yet non-intimidating way.
OOC:
I know I'm suggesting to split the party. Which may not be ideal. If you guys want to stick together (like Roald said) Albert wouldn't need much persuading to do that.
Sep 27, 2022 3:43 am
"Yes sir!" The farmers say to Albert, snapping off what they think is a salute and falling in behind Roald and Norbert as though waiting for one of you to lead the way (you are reminded that Olaf said they 'don't know where she is', and indeed, you can hear Olaf in the background, shouting at a poor, confused- and apologetic looking man up to his elbows in soapy water).

Daryl is literally vibrating with excitement at the promise of Raynor... anything, and looking around for a sign or miracle. One of Theo's guards had wandered off with his friends, and looks annoyed and resentful when he is called back and reminded of his duties, but Theo is happy to stick with Albert and keen to figure out what is happening and why the resistance seem to have accepted him as one of them.

What do you do?
Sep 27, 2022 5:26 am
'' I'll be honest Albert, I don't like splitting up. The last time we did that Asha had to pay for it, remember?''

Roald glances at Theo and the guards and continues in a lower voice.
'' And then there is this lot, the one in charge walked us straight into this mess, the other two... They look as hirelings ready to switch sides when things get heated''

''If you are certain this is the way to go, I will follow your plan. But the whole situation reeks of intrigue and betrayal.''
Sep 27, 2022 10:38 am
"Go on your divine errant, Albert. Roald and I will see to it that there is not more bloodshed than necessary. We will try to locate the girl ... as soon as we figure out who she is."
Sep 27, 2022 11:26 am
"All the more reason to consider the situation and our options." Albert says to Roald. If you wish to stay with me and wait, that's fine. But I fear those farmers need guidance on the battlefield sooner rather than later.

"Very well, Norbert. Perhaps Phil should go with you too."

He then sticks to the safe side of the palisade with Theo, to try and figure out what is going on. "So, what do we know so far? We can assume your father set this up, or at least had a hand in doing so..."
Sep 27, 2022 11:53 am
"What!? Why!?" Phil exclaims, his voice going very high and he actually hugs himself out of nervousness at being picked on.

"It's OK." Theo says, trying to sound reassuring. "He didn't mean anything. Just that you might be able to help. Go on, you'll be fine if Albert says so." Phil reluctantly shrugs --or just hunches his shoulders, it is hard to tell with his arms wrapped around his torsos so-- but follows quietly with the departing group.

Theo seems very surprised by Albert's suggestion that this father has anything to do with anything out here. "I doubt it." He says hesitantly. "He has never paid any attention to anything outside the village, and it's even worse since he put the stupid wall up." He considers things for a long while before saying. "Though he has been talking about the lack of provisions coming in... But the first I heard about a 'plan' was last night when he hired you. I suppose he could have had dealings with 'the resistance', but I never heard of it till today, and I don't actually think he knows about it.

"Are you saying you did not set this up? What are we doing here? What is going on? Who is 'the girl'? I don't want anything to do with any kidnapping, and I won't threaten a girl." He declares stubbornly.
Sep 27, 2022 12:16 pm
"This might just be me giving the benefit of the doubt, but I got the sense that we're not kidnapping this girl. Rather that she is already kidnapped and we are busting her out. Would you happen to know of anyone who has recently gone missing?" Albert asks Theo

"Well, if it wasn't your father, then who would have known about our trip to the barons with enough notice to set this up?" He eyes the two guards. "Is there anything you're not telling us?" He says as points at them with the tip of his broom stick. "Need I remind you of your duty to keep Theo safe?"
Sep 27, 2022 12:31 pm
"Oh, good. I hoped so." Theo sounds a lot happier with the idea of rescuing a kidnapped girl than the other way round. You can see his mind wander off, thinking about the many rewards and if the girl is cute, and he has to be nudged back to the topic at hand. "No... I haven't heard about anyone going missing." He concedes still pondering who it could be.

The two guards were hanging about out of earshot to give you some privacy. They look startled by Albert's question and not sure how to answer. "We was hired this morning. The young master comes to us, says we will get paid if we keep him and his friend safe on a day trip. Times are hard, you understand, there is no work since we was put off our land." He indicates the unmaintained fields out there to prove his point. "We did not know we was coming to 'The Resistance' or that they was here, but we are mighty proud to be serving the young master if he is our 'man in the mayors camp' Chris keeps talking about. That's all I can say about that."
Sep 27, 2022 1:55 pm
''Allright, so be it, we're going in. You and you, go in through the backdoor and signal us if it is safe to follow, it you can, try to make it to the first floor where you have an overview of the surroundings''
Roald points at 2 farmers who seem the most adequate for the job.

We will join you the moment we see the signal.

It takes but a moment for the farmers to reach the top floor, you can hear them clomping up the stairs over the sound of Olaf's shouting from the front room of the ground floor, it does not seem like Olaf is getting the answers he wants and he keeps shouting "where is she?!"

You can see your 'strike force' struggling to open the balcony doors to tell you it is safe to come up.

"Let's split up into two teams to search the house. Daryl and Norbert can come with me to search the ground floor. The others can join our two allies and search the upper levels. We will meet up in the room where Olaf is now."
Roald doesn't wait for approval and starts walking towards the house at a high pace.
He doesn't look back to see if they follow, of course he does hear Daryl.

This leadership thing is new to him and he's not sure if he's doing it the right way.

You got this Roald, believe in yourself!

With Daryl's clinking and clanking behind him as a reminder of his clumsyness with the armour, he starts doubting his decision of taking him inside the house.

I hope he learned something along the road, This is not a good time to have another back to watch. Norbert seems able enough though...

While they move trough the house Norbert stops the floor, looking for a trapdoor or a way to the cellar. He start knocking on the walls looking for different sound, it might be difficult to hear over Daryls clanking.
Norbert lets the dog roam free, but always keeps an eye on him.
Sep 29, 2022 3:19 pm
Norbert is pretty impressed by the size and luxury from the barons mansion. He has not been in a house like this before so he would no know where he would have to look for hidden doors. He uses his all his senses to search. He listens for differences in his steps on the floor, he stoops down to smell the boards, he looks at the plaster on the wall,... He understands that his behavior looks more like a dogs than his dog does, but he doesn't care.
If the search on the ground floor doesn't result in anything he continues in the wine cellar.

As instructed, Phil has been following close to you. He looks a lot more comfortable once inside the house, and also looks quite accustomed to such finery. It takes him a few moments to realise what you are doing, then he exclaims excitedly.

"Oh! I get it! I have read about this sort of thing." He then drags you all through the house, pulling and twisting on candle-holders knobs, and looking for bookshelves --absent on the ground floor-- in an attempt to find a secret door.

Eventually you find yourselves back at the entry to the cellar. "That's disappointing." Phil says at the failure to find another way down.

If you stuck with Phil during his search you will have gained some trust and would look a lot happier than when he was ordered to leave Theo's company. Either way he follows you down into the wine cellar (which also contains cheese).

You can see from the stairs that this area is as large as the house, so if there is any secret underground area it would need to be outside the buildings perimeter. The earth and stone walls sport no doors leading anywhere out from here, the only way up is the stairs back to the pantry and kitchen.

Eventually your search leads you to the front room where Olaf has stormed out and is now shouting at the gate. The front gate seems more sturdy than the one you came through and he is trying to make himself be heard over the continued noise of farmers trying to tear it down. "Stop it. Go around the back. It is done. Stop it." He yells to no avail. The three guards have stopped attacking and are hurling catcalls down at the mob outside, ignoring Olaf and his bluster.

"But you do know those men, don't you?" Albert replies to one of Theo's guards. "Yet you didn't know about this attack?" He asks, but doesn't wait for an answer before continuing.

"Olaf also mentioned that they had been waiting since the news came. What news would they have gotten? I don't believe it's the news of our arrival, because they weren't expecting us to join in." After this, Albert listens to what Theo and the others have to say about it all.
Sep 30, 2022 6:03 am
- Albert -

"Well, ya." The farmer replies. "We are Resistance. Right smart of the young master to hire us." He adds, though the pride in his voice is slightly blunted by a possible internal-accusation that Theo knew they were members, and did not mention they were coming here.

"Spoke with Olaf... day before yesterday?" He postulates. "None of this was planned at that time, so I don't know." He says, shrugging dismissively as though unconcerned about not knowing such plans.

Theo says nothing, but shares an increasingly desperate look with you at the continued insistence that he knew about all this. His attention seems to have shifted to the events in the house, and when not actively engaged, he bites his lip anxiously.

The baron's servants are standing around watching you, trying to seem like they are giving you privacy, but also doing their best to learn what is going on with these people who have invaded their home.

What do you do?
Sep 30, 2022 8:31 am
Albert tries his best to piece together what is actually going on. Theo seems to genuinely not know anything. This wasn't planned two days ago. The resistance knew about us, but were not expecting us. They say that Theuderic hired us to help the resistance. And they are looking for a girl or woman. He knows he should be getting to Roald and the others, but despite that he takes a few minutes to think this through.
Sep 30, 2022 6:59 pm
With a sudden movement, Albert snaps out of his contemplative state. "Right. Well, looks like we need to get more information, we best go and find the others then." He looks up in the direction of the baron's manor and notices the lack of privacy that they find themselves in. "Come on, let's go." He sets off to the house together with Theo and the guards. As they near the group of servants, he asks his companions. "Are any of these people friends of yours, by chance?"
Sep 30, 2022 7:01 pm

"Helga, over there is married to my wife's brother." The talkative guard admits. "But we don't talk to that side of the family, so I wouldn't say 'friend'."
Sep 30, 2022 8:47 pm
"Wonderful." Albert replies short but clear. "Go see if she knows where the baron is. Maybe he'll be able to explain all of this to us. Then come and find us again inside." He tells him, without having any idea if that will work. But Theo doesn't seem to be giving them any orders, so Albert will see how much he can get away with.

Without giving anyone a chance to disagree, he keeps on stepping to the entrance of the building. "Roald? Norbert? Phil? Are you in here?"
Sep 30, 2022 9:11 pm

"I'll do my best, but no promises." The bodyguard-farmer grumbles as he slouches off to talk to the estranged in-law's in-law.
Oct 1, 2022 1:58 am
"In here, Albert" Roald shouts.

Before Albert gets back the 2 men Roald sent upstairs are entering the room. Roald turns when they enter.
"Hey Alb... Oh it's you two, did you guys find anything upstairs? Any sign of the baron? Did you check the closets, under the beds, behind the curtains?"
Oct 1, 2022 6:23 am
Norbert shouts "Down here!" and then you here a muffled "NO, dog, no" as he wrestles a lump of cheese free from its mouth. We will keep looking down here for a bit.

Norbert actually enjoyed roaming the house with Phil. Once he figured out that Phil had a much better understanding of the building he mimicked more of his behavior and felt rather stupid for stomping a floor in a house which is completely supported by a cellar. He chats with Phil about the strange stuff they see. This is really starting to feel like an adventure, Norbert thinks to himself.

Once in the cellar he keeps closer to Phil. The place gives him goosebumps and holding the candle and keeping the dog away from the stores of food makes searching difficult. "Where would you hide a captive princess?" He asks Phil.

Your minions report back, though you already sorta know their answer, they have not been nearly long enough to be any sort of thorough. "No sign of Childebert." They say, but they look surprised and sheepish at the rest. "The closest? Under the... curtains? Er... no."

Phil's nervousness at going with you seems to have morphed into excitement. They really seem to be enjoying sticking close to you as you conduct this search and chatter away happily on any topic you choose till you get to your last question.

"A Princess?" He exclaims excitedly. "You think they have captured a princess?" He thinks for a moment before answering. "You don't keep princesses in a dungeon, you keep them high up. But I did not see a tower. If they want her to be comfortable --she is a princess after all-- I would assume she is upstairs, in one of the bedrooms..." The talk of someone keeping a princess locked in their bedroom seems to conjure up distressing thoughts in Phil's innocent mind and they tug on your sleeve. "We must go up there and save her from that!"

Roald sighs audibly. Without looking at the men he stomps up the stairs and starts searching every room. He opens closets and looks under beds. He also tries to compare the size of the rooms to the layout of the ground level.
Hmmm, does this room seem bigger than the one below? I should check for a hidden passage later.
Then his eyes spot a latch in the ceiling of one of the rooms. Ahah, an attic!
The latch has a small metal ring attached to it, so one can pull it down with a hook on a stick.
So where is the stick... He searches the room but can't find anything useful. He ponders for a moment and notices a heavy oak chest in the corner, with a lot of effort he pushes the chest underneath the latch and tries to lift it to get it on it's side, this will make it easier to reach to latch. But the chest is too heavy.
"DARYL!! DO YOU HAVE A MOMENT TO LEND ME HAND?
Almost instantly he hears the sound of pots and pans coming up the stairs.
We should do something about that sound, maybe find him some padding of some sort.
Together they manage to turn the chest, Daryl helps Roald climb on top of it. Roald sticks his finger through the metal ring and pulls hard.
Oct 2, 2022 6:19 am
"Lets go then!" Norbert exclaims as he gets caught up in the excitement. They hastily get upstairs and follow the sounds of metal on metal.

Just in time to see Roald climb on the chest they wait with held breath.

The dog barking excitedly at first stops wagging its tail and Norbert gets a sinking feeling in his stomach as the hatch makes no sound at all while Roald pulls the rings. He steps in front of Phil and his hand drops to his axe.
Oct 2, 2022 8:46 am
Phil presses close to Norbert in nervous anticipation as the hatch cracks silently open.

Dust cascades down upon Roald and Daryl, and there is a heavy layer on top of the hatch making it hard to lift and suggesting it has not been used in many years. It is possible the current family do not know about this --hidden away as it is-- and only Roald's superior deduction abilities brought it to light.

There is a soft scratching sound from above, as thought something small is disturbed by the movement of the hatch.

"Please don't let it be rats" Phil whispers.

Oct 2, 2022 9:48 am
Norbert sighs in relief. "I'll have a look." Norbert says while he gets on the chest and starts climbing on Roalds shoulders.
Seeing the look on Roald face Norbert understands that it was a not so common in other families to climb on each others shoulders to reach higher place like apple trees (or girls windows according to his brothers).
Norbert explains to Roald how to place his feet and tries to struggle on his shoulders to prepare to scramble trough the hole.

Norbert shows his nimble youth and gets up to the attic floor. He waits a few heartbeats to let his eyes adjust to the dim light falling trough the roof.
He moves slowly to avoid bumping into the stuff lying around. He is not sure what the attic is used for and what he sees.

The first thing you see as you eyes adjust is a small, colourful, forest bird, sitting on a box and watching you with its head cocked to one side. The dust under your hand is crunchy with old bird droppings --some of them surely too large for such a small variety of bird, but do you know that sort of thing?

From what you can tell from here, the rest of the attic appears to be filled with old furniture, chairs pilled on a table, some coffers, and a pile of old kitchenware behind you within reach of the hatch.

Roald is standing on the chest next to Norbert when without any warning he starts climbing him as if he was the old pine tree behind the butcher's shop.
" Whohw, what are you doing?" Roald is having a hard time keeping his balance. On Norbert's instructions he puts his feet wider apart and bends his knees just a little. It increases his stability a lot.
"AUCH! Can you be a little more careful please? I'm quite fond of my face, you know!" He says with an annoyed voice. When Norbert's head disappears in the attic, he helps him squirming through the hole by supporting his feet.

"Can you see anything? Or anyone? Do you need some light? Hey you there, hand me that candle"
At the moment there are some spectators in the room, wondering what all the fuzz is about.

" BY RAYNOR, light the damn thing first, would you."
OOC:
Roald is getting more and more agitated/annoyed. Nothing seems to go as planned and the majority of the resistance seem to be ignorant fools. The next person who crosses him could be in for a sermon.

Albert steps into the house when he hears Roald's voice, and not long after, Norbert's shout from down stairs. "Theo, have you been here before? Do you know anything about the building?" He asks, hoping that Theo might have some knowledge to share. Then he hears the clanking of Daryl's armor. Sounds like he's going up stairs. And as he's trying to pin point the origin of the sound, Albert catches a glimpse of Norbert and Phil.

"There's Norbert and Phil." He says, just in case Theo hadn't noticed, and follows them up. They make it up the stairs just in time to see Norbert start his climb on Roald's back. Albert can't help but chuckle at the sight of the two of them struggling to reach what looks like an attic.
[ +- ] Here's an artisitc representation of what Albert sees
"Did you guys find something?" He says after recovering when his laughter sends him into a bit of a coughing fit. The dust in this room surely isn't helping either.

"I have never left the village." Theo admits --possibly making Albert worry about the mayor's willingness to agree that he go out with this group now. "Looks like a house though?" He postulates, not seeing anything special about the fanciness here, even though it is --or was-- more ostentatious than his father's house.

Theo definitely already noticed Phil and his eyes track their movement protectively to make sure the other boy is OK. He visibly relaxes at what he sees, and a tension that was not apparent till now drains from him

Upstairs, Phil giggles uncontrollably at Norbert's antics --and at Roald's annoyance as well-- then even more as Daryl scrabbles to both bow an apology and light the candle at the same time.

Norbert: There is a lit candle available below, within easy reach, if you want it.
Oct 3, 2022 1:01 pm
"Ah this will help me avoid the birdpoop, yuck!", Norbert says as he reaches for the candle. "There are coffers and furniture up here, but I will snoop around a bit more."
After a few seconds his head pops down again; "But no princess yes, Phil. Get up here and help me look".

As long as the droppings aren't bigger than a sheeps', Norbert is not interested in or alarmed by poop.

Your spoken words cause the little bird to flee in a hurry, fluttering into a shaft of light and squeezing out through the gap.

Phil takes a step forward, but then hesitates when he sees your face. It looks like he is torn between the desire to join you up there and the not wanting to get his clothes dirty... which does not make a lot of sense for those clothes --which look kinda like cast-offs and have seen better days-- but is consistent with Phil's otherwise rather clean and neat appearance. Theo steps forward, clearly offering to help, but whether that is an offer to help Phil ascend or to take his place is unclear.

What do you do?
Oct 3, 2022 2:37 pm
Seeing Theo move closer Norbert says: "Help Phil up here, Theo. We are small enough to get into all nooks and crannies. And alone I won't be able to move these big coffers and chests."
Norbert leans a bit over the ridge and extends his hand down.

Ignoring the Roald-ladder, Theo boosts Phil up to take your hands and you easily lift him into the dark and confined space. You have to press close together to move around or pass each other in the narrow spaces, and you can feel the heat of Phil's blushing at the contact, but he does not say anything.

Another candle is lit and both are passed up so you can look around more easily.

The roof slants above your heads, so there is only the center section where you can stand erect. There are boards placed across the beams, and you don't know if it is safe to step on the ceiling between them.

"Where do we start." Phil asks breathlessly, then, as his foot crushed the small bones of a what was probably a rat, he exclaims: "Eeww!"

What do you do?
Oct 4, 2022 9:56 am
"It's not so bad, Phil. Let's look what is in these crates." Norbert says, pointing at the crates. "Who knows what treasure is up here." He adds with a smile.

Slowly and carefully Norbert moves trough the attic. Looking in the crates and trying to get beyond the first few, he takes a look at the entire room.

What he actually is looking for is a spot where the dust isn't thick.
Oct 4, 2022 10:18 am
- Norbert -

"Ooh! It's heavy." Phil exclaims as you both lift a box down to get easier access and to see beyond.

Phil is more interested in the rest of the attic --while it is not as romantic as a tower, it is the 'highest room' so should contain the 'princess'. A little careful squeezing and his lithe form easily makes it past the barrier of furniture to the other side, after which he has to reach back for you to relight the candle dropped on its head during the squeeze, but then he is disappointed.

"There is nothing here." He wails. "Just more junk. Look: this pile has fallen all over the roof," (technically 'ceiling' not 'roof' but Phil is not technically minded like that:).

Peering through the gaps you can see all the way to the edges by the light that comes in through the gaps in the roof tiles. You can make out the shape of the house below reflected above. The angles of the roof cut into the 'attic' at the corners, and chimneys extend stone fingers up through the space.

There is no sign that anyone has been up here in a long time. The layer of dust looks undisturbed by anything larger than rats and birds... and Phil if you don't speak up in time.

The heavy box turns out to be filled with paper --which people forget is heavier than the wood it it made of. It will take ages to go through all of them, but there appear to be books in one, and hand written papers in another, and old, moth-eaten clothes in another, nothing at all in another one, and so on. Not always as neatly divided. You would guess this is the accumulated clutter of generations.

What are you looking for? Maybe the others will have guidance if you keep them informed of what you are finding.
Oct 4, 2022 10:36 am
"Come on Phil, let's head back before we too dirty. It does not look like anyone came here in a long time."

Turning to the hatch Norbert Calls: "Nothing up here except books and dust. And pretty much in the same amount. Does anyone want to see the books? Or should I look for something else?"

Heading back to the hatch Norbert takes a peek in the other chests and tells the guys downstairs what is in it. If there would be anything he would recognise as very valuable he will omit it, not trusting the "guards" to climb up afterwards and try to steal stuff. Norbert will not be part of that.
Oct 4, 2022 11:23 am
"Though I love a good book, this probably isn't the time to be reading." Albert says with a smile. "Well if that attic isn't a help, let me go and see if Theo's guard is back. He was asking the servants where we can find the baron."

He walks back to the stairs while Norbert and Phil are busy descending back into the room, looks down, and realizes he doesn't know the guard's name. No point in shouting "Guard?". I best get down and look. And so he does just that.
Oct 4, 2022 11:41 am
- Albert -

It is not at all hard to locate your as-to-now-unidentified guard. There are raised voice from the scullery, a man --your guard you think-- and a woman shouting at each other angrily. You get snatches of the 'conversation' as you approach, and it boils down to: "How dare you Gerard..." (she pronounces the name such that it really does sound like 'Guard', so maybe you would have had more success than you thought?) "... attack our house and then demand answers...".

It does not sound like he has had any luck reconnecting with his extended family, and that is not likely to be an avenue towards answers.
OOC:
Do you really want to get in the middle of that mess?
Oct 4, 2022 11:53 am
Albert heads back up the stairs, thinking I'm already fearing the wrath of Raynor, I don't need to add an angry woman to that list. "Looks like he's not back yet." He says to Theo, back in the room. Which technically isn't a lie.

"Was there anything of interest in the house?" He asks Norbert, Roald and Phil. "If not, I think we best look for Olaf first."
Oct 4, 2022 12:07 pm
"I really want to know who they are looking for, and why." Theo says determinedly. "There is something going on, and they keep looking at me like they expect me to know something."

"It's obviously a captured princess." Phil declares exasperatedly with only his head is visible, hanging out of the ceiling hatch. He has to scrabble to catch his leather hat/helmet as it almost slips from his upside-down head. Doing so, he almost falls, striking his shoulder on the edge of the hole and whimpering in pain.
Oct 4, 2022 6:46 pm
"But she is not up here. Theo can you give us a hand?" Norbert says while he helps Phil back down through the hatch.

After he himself gets back down Norbert says to Alber: "I haven't seen Olaf since the fighting began. Is the fight completely over? Judging by the numbers of the Resistance I expected more ... resistance by the barons men."
OOC:
I am so sorry. I could not resist.
Oct 4, 2022 7:18 pm
Theo accepts a lowered Phil and then helps Norbert get down.

You all can still hear Olaf's shouting over by the --now open-- front gate. It does not sound like he is happy with the way things are going.

What do you do?
Oct 4, 2022 8:19 pm
"I haven't seen him either, but I hear some shouting outside." Albert heads to a nearby window to see if he can spot Olaf and what's going on outside.
OOC:
I'm assuming there's a window somewhere on this floor.
Oct 4, 2022 8:25 pm
- Albert -

"GAH!" You hear Olaf bellow as he throws his hands up in the air in exasperation and storms off down the road. The nearby resistance members look at each other and shrug --as if to say "well, that's Olaf for you"-- and then start to break off into groups and wander away as well now that the excitement is over.

Pretty soon you might find yourselves alone in a house whose gate you broke down and attacked.

What do you do?
Oct 4, 2022 8:45 pm
"Guys, we are going to have to hurry up and leave." He tells the others from a distance. "It looks like the resistance are scattering."
Oct 5, 2022 9:56 am
'' Yes, that may the best thing to do for now. Too bad we didn't accomplish anything.
I find it strange how fast this house was taken by the resistance, I mean, why didn't they act sooner? What are we missing here?''

'' I think we should go back and have a little chat with your father Theo. If we hurry we might make it back before the town sleeps.''
Oct 5, 2022 10:43 am
"Um... I really don't think he has anything to do with this." Theo answers Roald hesitantly. "It just does not fit. Not that anything here makes sense."

You get the impression he does not want to go home right now, that he does not want the adventure to be over yet. Phil does not say anything but you get the impression he also does not want to go back to town, and he steps closer to Norbert --ready to follow whatever he says-- though still hovering between Theo and the shepherd. Theo's guards seem to have forgotten why they are here and wandered off with their resistance friends.

Daryl looks exhausted and drained, but he also looks disappointed that there was not more to this adventure.

If you check you will see Olaf storming off on his own. Are there any members of the resistance that you think are worth talking to before they disperse? Maybe his brother can help explain what on earth Olaf was trying to do?
Oct 5, 2022 3:01 pm
"Maybe we can talk to the rest of the resistance. Christian is still here and I saw his drinking buddies before. They are twins Wes and Will. They call themself "the crushers", but they are known as the crashers in town because after a night of drinking they often crash in the gutter. I would not call that to their face. Maybe they know who were are looking for and it should not be too difficult to get it out of them. A few drinks will surely help."

Already going back down Norbert says: "I think they are out there in the yard with a little barrel."
Oct 6, 2022 1:13 pm
Albert follows behind Norbert, eager to leave and get to the bottom of what is actually going on.
Oct 7, 2022 2:36 pm
As you get to the yard you see Christian finishing up a conversation with Wes and Will ("So you're just going to steal the baron's booze and then get drunk in his backyard!?" to their reply of: "Baron's no here, is he."), giving up on them, and hurrying out the back gate to catch up with the last few farmers.

Wes and Will look talkative. Norbert knows that Christian can be a bit tight lipped unless approached right.

• Who do you talk to, and what do you ask?
Oct 9, 2022 7:28 am
Roald runs behind Christian: "Hey there, Christian, one moment please, let's walk together."
When he catches up he asks: " So, I guess this was it then? what a weard outcome isn't it? Do you have any idea what went wrong?"

Christian looks surprised and confused as you run up to him, it takes him a moment to remember who you are. It helps that Theo has rushed to follow you --he wants to know what Christian meant when he mentioned 'an inside man', but still does not want to give away that he does not know that he is not that man.

Christian slows to allow the other farmers to get a ways ahead before you catch up. "I do have to apologise for my brother. It was rude to just storm off like that." He says, glossing over the fact that he, himself, forgot about you guys and left without talking to you. "He does that when things don't go his way." He says as the extent of his apology.

"I guess his information was wrong this time?" He explains. "Usually his informant is reliable. But this was a bit rushed between last night and now, so things might have changed. Sorry." Again, this last word seems to be addressed to Theo, as though he had a personal stake in all this. "If we can get new information we will do our best, yeah. Anything for 'our man in the mayors house'," he says 'house' as though that word has gained a more literal meaning now. "And maybe we can gain the mayor's favour too, after this, yeah?"
Oct 11, 2022 4:44 am
''most unfortunate timing to be wrong indeed. Can you tell me some more about what it is exactly you are trying to accomplish? I noticed you have the manpower to raid the house and overthrow the baron, so why now and not earlier? Does he have some kind of leverage? Or did he take his usual guards with him leaving the house undefended?''
Oct 11, 2022 6:02 pm
Getting out of the house and leaving the rush of the search and attack behind, Norbert is pretty confused. When he steps outside and sees the turmoil the courtyard is in he starts to second guess the actions of the resistance and their leaders. Maybe it is time to get more information about these heroes.
He follows Roald and Theo.
"Come on, Phil. Stay close now. It time to leave. Where did your father find these 'heroes?'" He says to Phil when they are out of earshot. "Did you know there was an attack planned?"
Somehow adventuring sounded a bit more romantic to Norbert. Not just breaking into a house and disturbing the locals to then just get up and leave.
Oct 11, 2022 7:15 pm
- Roald -

"'Unfortunate'?"" Christian asks. "I don't know. It went a lot better than I expected. But I suppose it helped that the baron was not there. I do wish Olaf would have told us... assuming he knew and that was part of the plan?"

The resistance still seem to think you guys were involved in the planning of this and know more than they do.

"It was a pretty good plan. Distracting at the front and then coming in the back." He says in a way that sounds like he is complementing you. "I will remember that for next time."

"There are usually a few more guards. I assume Childebert took half of them with him, wherever he went." Christian turns again to Theo. "I guess he took her away, too. I am not sure what we can do about that. But you let us know if there is anything else we can do for you."
Oct 11, 2022 7:16 pm
- Norbert -

"My...? father...? What do you mean?" Phil says defensively, once more withdrawing into himself and clutching at his jacket, and looking around for Theo for protection.

You remember that it is Theo's father who is the mayor, and that the mayor only has one son, but your question seems to have shaken Phil more than a simple mistake should have.

What do you do?
Oct 11, 2022 9:01 pm
Albert catches up with Norbert and Phil after tying his shoes. "Do you see Wes and Will anywhere, Norbert?" He asks, not realizing he may be interrupting.

"Do you think they took that booze to a tavern maybe? I don't know this town, but I think your idea of having a drink with the locals is a good one. We might actually get some useful new information."

Together with the others, Albert makes his way out of the Baron's compound, trying to stay out of sight of possible guards.

''Say, Christian... Do you know a place where we can spend the night if need be? I was thinking, what if the baron returns this evening. That might give us a second opportunity. Maybe some of your men can stand guard out here in the field, and warn us if he comes back. ''
Oct 13, 2022 1:37 pm
"Oh, yes, of course. Good idea." Christian says when Roald suggest leaving a lookout to report on the baron's arrival. He calls out to two farmers who have not completely wandered away. "These heroes have a job for you." He tells them --you have noticed that Christian does not have a lot of authority in the resistance, and tends to make use of passing around other people's ideas and authority.

When you tell the farmers what you need they grumble a bit ("How long do we need to stay here?" being the top of the pile) but comply willingly enough --farmers are accustomed to such 'watch' jobs --especially those with sheep, Norbert will know.

"Any of the resistance would be proud to put you up for the night." Christian declares, returning to Roald's other enquiry. Implied in that is that he, too, would be proud, but you get the feeling that he --and possibly most-- would rather someone else got the duty of being thusly proud. You could choose to stay with anyone here and they will agree.

What do you do?
Oct 13, 2022 3:48 pm
"Oh yeah, I meant Theo's father. You never told me about your parents. Do you know my family?" With a little embarrassment in his voice Norbert adds: "I have a lot of brothers.".

Turning to Albert he says: "Oh, um, bringing your own booze to a tavern is frowned upon in these parts. Maybe they went to one of the little shacks where the shepherds sleep to empty their loot." That last word sounds like Norbert spat out a wasp.

"But maybe its getting time to think about the night. It will get difficult to get back to the village if we loiter here much longer."

After a short silence he adds to Albert: "I must say I expected something else from adventurers than storming and sacking someones house. Do we even know who we are looking for?"
Oct 13, 2022 4:49 pm
- Norbert -

"Oh, yes. Theo's dad." Phil says, but it sounds like like he does not fully believe you. "Let me tell you a secret." Phil says, maybe as a ploy to get change the subject --from though from what, you can not be sure. "Theo's father had nothing to do with any of this. He does not know about this 'resistance' and has not been helping them... but neither does Theo... I am not sure why they think Theo is involved, but that does suggest there is a spy in the mayor's ranks."

He drops his voice even further. "He does not know that we ... that Theo... left town. Theo allowed those farmers... where have they gotten to, anyway?" You notice that the bodyguards seem to have forgotten that they were not just here to meet with their resistance buddies, and they have wandered off when the other farmers dispersed --though you still heard Gerard protesting against Helga when you left. "... They just assumed, and then Theo let them believe that the mayor was hiring them, but he paid out of his pocket-money."

"I think I have seen your bothers when they come to town." Phil answers your other question dreamily. He almost says something more but then blushes and pretends to be looking around for Theo or the missing bodyguards and is relieved when you turn to Albert.
Oct 15, 2022 6:52 am
Roald thinks for a moment.
" I think it would be best to stay with someone who is leading this resistance, that way we can easily come up with a new plan if need be.

We don't ask for much, during our adventures we slept on the ground and under the stars quite often. We also have some nice stories to tell over a meal... well not all of them are suited to talk about while having dinner, but you know what I mean..."

Roald stops talking and stares at Christian in the hope he will make the suggestion they can stay with him or Olaf.
Oct 15, 2022 8:26 am
Norbert rises his eyebrows slightly when Phil suddenly shows he knows much more than he let on at first. But Norbert is going to let it go ... for now.

"Lets catch up with Roald before he gets too far ahead."

To Albert he continues: "Maybe we can talk about it this evening. After our nerves had time to settle a bit."

Norbert whistles softly, gives the dog a long cuddle when it arrives from the bushes. The dog is friendly to everyone and keeps on wiggling its tail, but it doesn't go more than a few feet from Norbert.
Oct 15, 2022 4:40 pm
"Yes" Albert replies to Norbert. "This is not what I had hoped from our trip to see the baron, either." He looks back over his shoulder to where they just came from. "I think you're right. We'll need to do some talking to figure this whole thing out."

He follows Norbert and Phil to meet up with Roald, and see what he's up to.
Oct 15, 2022 4:55 pm
"What!" Phil says defensively at Norbert's raised eyebrow. "I was there for that part." Which only excuses the bit about the bodyguards not all the assurances about the baron or Theo.

As the group reforms around Roald, you can reassess your party. In addition to the three adventurers you still have Daryl, Theo and Phil. "Where did the protection get to?" Phil asks Theo nervously. "We don't need them anymore." Theo says dismissively, we was worried about the group before but, now that he has met the 'heroes' he seems to trust them. Phil nods and smiles in agreement. There is no mention of who the baron will feel about them abandoning their post.

Christian looks concerned about these numbers... or was it the word 'meal'. "The ... six ... of you?" He asks, counting on his fingers. "We can go to Olaf's." He decides. "Olga can cook.". He seems much happier now that that responsibility is lifted from him. "And we can wait for Olaf."
Oct 19, 2022 2:45 am
Four kids --aged between three and eight-- are playing a noisy game in the yard, but they break off to stare at the adventurers --Dylan in his shining armour being a particular point of excitement-- as you arrive at Olaf's house. Christian looks nervous as he tentatively knocks on the kitchen door, hat in hand.

Olga turns out to be a large woman, her red face smeared with the flour that coats her hands up to the elbows. "What do you want?" She demands of Christian uncharitably, glaring at the rest of the group.

"These are Olaf's friends." Christian lies. "Great adventurers and allies of The Resistance. They need food and a place to sleep tonight." He explains. "And you know I can't feed them."

She glares at him some more, it does not look like being friends of Olaf --nor aiding the Resistance-- inclines Olga towards your favour, but the need for food makes her face soften. "I suppose they better come in." She says grudgingly. "Where is that no-good husband of mine?" She demands, but does not really pay too much attention to Christian's story. "Stop gawking!" She shouts at the kids halfway though his answer about going to see his contact. "And go wash up for dinner."

The kids make their way to a pump in the yard and biggest struggles to get it moving. If any of you want to wash up as well, or just want to help with the pump, you can do so before going in.
The table is a bit crowded with all of you --a light rain has started, else Olga would have set up on the table in the yard-- and the kids are forced to share stools --unless you are brave enough to let them sit on your laps, like Dylan did-- and you are just wondering where Olaf will sit if he returns when you hear his loud voice in the yard outside:

"... wrong < swearword > baron! How could we get the wrong < swearword > baron!" He sounds angry, and Christian looks worried about what comes next.

What do you do?
Oct 19, 2022 5:40 pm
Never been a big brother to anyone (and to forget some of the events of the day) Norbert joins the children at the pump and in a little play before dinner. He lets them pat the dog and invites Phil to join. He is careful not to let any rough play get out of hand. Kids get excited so quickly nowadays.

Once at the table he tries to slip some morsels of meat and bone from his own plate into his sleeve for the dog later this evening.

When he hears the angry voice outside he can't help to let slip: "You must be kidding me."
OOC:
I love this plottwist. Call me stupid, but I did not see it coming at all :)
Oct 19, 2022 9:03 pm
Albert thanks Olga kindly for the hospitality. "We are very sorry to intrude like this. I will gladly help you in the kitchen if you can use an extra pair of hands." He offers as a measly recompense. "I used to own a bar, and would often make stew. I'm a pretty decent onion peeler, if I do say so myself."

He enjoys this meal even more so than the one at the mayor's house. Everything is so cozy here, and full of life. Then he also hears the yelling outside and realizes why the resistance hadn't had much success...
He exchanges glances with Roald and Norbert that clearly echo Norbert's words "You have GOT to be kidding me!"

Roald doesn't let the opportunity to wash up a little slip. He takes off some of his clothes - but keeps it decent - and enjoys the cold water. If he has a chance to splash at Norbert he will do so.
The crowded table is not his cup of tea, he eats and also thanks the lady of the house for the fine meal.
After hearing Olaf's words he chokes on a piece of bread. Coughing like a goose with a nasty cold
OOC:
yes I made that one up
He looks at Daryl for some help. His eyes wide, as if shouting ''help''
Before Daryl can react (if he even understood Roald's eyesigns) a strong thump on Roald's back sends the piece of bread flying out of his throat back into his bowl. It is one of the older kids who has clearly dealt with this kind of problem before. With tears in his eyes and a raw voice Roald thanks the lad. '' I think you just saved my life''. The exaggeration makes the boy blush.

His vision is still a bit blurry when Olaf steps into the room.
Oct 22, 2022 5:07 am
At the pump, Phil is keen to get clean again --the trip into the attic has left its mark-- but again, anyone watching might notice an abnormal amount of care over his clothes --ill-fitting and unimpressive as they are. He is also very careful not to remove his leather hat while washing his face. Phil laughs delightedly at Roald's 'assaults' on Norbert... until the clothes start coming off, when he turns away and heads quickly into the house. Theo follows.

Daryl needs a little help getting the gauntlets off his hands so he can wash up and eat, but soon there are kids running around wearing them and his helmet and wielding willow switch swords at each other till there are tears --despite Norbert's efforts.

Olga is a bit suspicious of Albert's offer at first, but grudgingly accepts and tasks him with bulking up the existing stew --and wondering if his duties extended to cleaning up after-- while she adds another loaf of bread to the oven. "It will be a bit flat." She apologises to no one in particular. "It really should rest until tomorrow morning before baking. But you young bucks have good teeth." And, indeed, the flat dense loaf is delicious if eaten while still warm before it gets hard.

The eight-year-old who 'saved Roald's life' straightens Dylan's helmet which is slipping off his head and squeezes proudly onto a shared-stool instead of climbing back onto Dylan's lap. So Dylan can finally get to eating properly, though it is still awkward as his armour restricts his range of movement.
When Olaf barges through the door --shaking rain from his beard and hair-- he looks more surprised to see his brother at his kitchen table than he does to find the rest of you strangers. But he rallies quickly enough. "It's the other baron!" He declares without any greeting. "The Clodo-one. Nixon said 'the baron', why did we all just assume it was this one instead of the one way over on the other side of the valley?" He ask, easily shifting the blame for this assumption from his shoulders alone. "Not sure what we can do about that." He says, and again the apology seems to be directed Theo's way.

"Budge up." He grunts, sweeping a gaggle of kids off a stool, plonking down tiredly, and reaching for bread, stew, and ale.

What do you do?

OOC:
adding a bit to what happened before Olaf shows up. Hope that's not too confusing :)
Albert is eager to show Olga what he can do. After spending some time on the road now, he's starting to miss a few things about his previous life as a barkeep. Then again, it has brought him good friends. Old and new.

"It's a shame we couldn't find the girl." he says to Olga while dicing some turnips. "I keep feeling like something was off. Could you by chance tell me more about her?"

"What girl's this, then?" Olga asks as you work. She does not appear to know anything about this, and you get the impression she may frown upon some of the ideas you guys had about what was happening.

Roald Takes a long sip from his cup, his voice is still hoarse when he speaks: "Thank you for your hospitality Olaf, so generous of you and your family. "
Still not being sure if they should come clean about the fact that they have no clue about what's going on he decides to leave things as they are and hopes there will be some more information coming their way as they keep the conversation going.
"Indeed, quite an unfortunate mistake, when are you planning to meet with Nixon? We can come with you and work out a new approach."
Oct 25, 2022 8:14 pm
"Well, to be honest, that's what I'm trying to figure out as well. We were caught off guard with that part of the mission." Albert says, not mentioning that all the other parts were a surprise as well. "I'll have to ask Olaf himself when he gets here."
After exchanging annoyed looks with Nortbert and Roald, Albert sits still, not sure what to say next. He's relieved when Roald takes care of that.

"Maybe a good night sleep will bring a clearer view. And hopefully it will give us better idea's to approach the Baron. News of today will have reached the Baron, both of them. So I fear the same approach for the other Baron will not go so well."

Norbert looks around, almost surprised at hearing his own voice uttering these words. All eyes on him he hopes he doesn't turn red.

"I assume we don't plan on storming the gate again, hoping they don't put up too much of a fight. Maybe talking to the Baron will prove a less destructive route. Especially now we bloodied his adversaries nose."

"Well, anyway, I am off the bed." Norbert says standing up and making ready for going outside to the hay barn.
Oct 27, 2022 12:43 pm
Just as Norbert stand up to head to bed, Albert speaks up. "Alright, I've had enough of this!" He would be shouting if not for the fact he's afraid to scare the children. Instead he just talks loudly.

"We need to know what's going on." He says, directing his voice at Christian and Olaf. "We were sent here to TALK to the baron. And instead, we end up in some vigilante attack on his house. Because, apparently, " At this point he looks at Theo "His father sent heroes to help the resistance. However, we had not heard of any attack plans. Not only did we get no valuable information from this course of action. It severely limits our chances to settle this peacefully. On top of that, now it turns out the resistance was attacking the wrong baron!?!?!?"

"So essentially, you've ticked off one baron by attacking him for no reason, and alerted the other that you were planning to attack them. Unless you're planning on reuniting the two barons by introducing a common enemy, this is about as bad as it could have gone."

"Now, can somebody, in Raynor's name, explain what is going on, and finally tell us who this girl is?"

Albert notices, at this point, that everyone is looking at him and that he has gotten up from his seat without realizing it. He sits down again, a bit ashamed of his outburst and adds. "Sorry, Olga." Unhappy with the way he raised his voice after her hospitality.
OOC:
Albert isn't trying to be aggressive, nor accuse anyone in particular, but he's fed up with the whole situation.

I hope I didn't misread any of the referenced events. If there are inconsistencies, let me know and I can change things here and there.

Roald stands up to give himself an extra moment to think before someone else starts to speak.
''I... I would like to add that: yes, we could have said something earlier, but we were not sure what kind of people you were. Friendly or hostile. We were afraid that If we spoke the truth, you might take us prisoner and put an end to our mission even before it started. That's why we rolled with your story. While we were trying to figure out what was going on, an all out attack started and we found ourselves in the middle of it. So please take this into consideration when you judge us on our behavior.
I understand if you want to throw us out, but we never meant any harm not to you, nor to the baron.''

Roald keeps standing for just a few seconds, making sure to look everyone in the eye so they might see he's not lying or making up excuses.

"Uhm,.. off to bed young ones. That also means you Chris junior." Norbert quickly looks at Olga and after a slide nod he starts collecting the kids. If it had not been for the tension around the table Norbert would have enjoyed his roll as 'big' brother.

"Let the grownups talk as grownups." Are the last words the people at the table hear him say as he ushers the last kid out of the room.

The family stare at Albert, surprised by his sudden, out of the blue, outburst. Both Olaf and Christian try to interrupt at several points where they disagree, but Olga's restraining hand and warning look still them until the kids are removed and the shouting starts.

"Vigi..what?!" Olaf demands before both he and his brother laugh out loud at the mention of the mayor. "Why would that money-grubby, blowhard pig help us?" Olaf asks incredulously. "He does not care about our troubles." He looks to Theo who is forced to nod in agreement that his father does not.

There are other, jumbled objections: "What do you mean you 'had not heard of attack plans'? They were your plans. We were following you. Who wants peace? Who cares about the other baron! Who cares about what they think!" And devolving into the realisation: "You all lied to us!"

"Get out of my house!" Olaf bellows, and Christian does not seem inclined to argue or offer his place as an alternative. But Olga puts her foot down at breaking the hospitality she has offered. "You can't put them out in this." She indicates the storm that has sprung up outside as though to mirror the turmoil inside. Olaf grudgingly agrees that you can stay in the barn, but that he wants you gone by morning.

As the kitchen door slams behind you you can still hear Christian's demanding from Olaf: "I thought you said they were with us?! Were you told that or were you guessing again?!" The storm drowns out Olaf's mumbled answer, and it would take some effort on your part to hear more.

Dylan, Theo, and especially Phil, look miserable in the storm, and Dylan points the way to the barn.

What do you do?

"I'm sorry guys." Albert looks downtrodden by the whole situation as he follows Dylan. "I could not keep up this theater any longer. I was hoping we would figure out what was going on during the attack. Unfortunately, none of our efforts seemed to help us." He decides to let everyone else take a good sleeping spot before choosing his own.

"All I wanted was some answers. But now we still know nothing more." He sighs heavily. "I don't know what to do." He sits down with his back against one of the barn's beams and mouths a prayer to Raynor.

Theo and Phil huddle together in a corner, shivering. It is not that cold, and you all are not that wet, but they appear unaccustomed to hardships of this nature. They don't complain and seem to be trying to follow the adventurers more stoic example.

"You thought my father was involved? With the resistance?" Theo asks incredulously. While you just admitted to lying to the resistance, and he knows he did exactly the same, there is a note in his voice that suggest he has just realised you were doing the same to him, and he does not much like being on the other side of that equation.

Daryl looks pretty miserable in his armour --which seems to have directed the water inside and then trapped it there-- but he also looks proud that he is withstanding the 'hardships of a campaign' so well --stories can warp a young man's brain. "Do we need to stand watch?" He asks. "In case those brothers try anything?" He sounds eager, though you can't tell if that for the prospect of 'standing guard', or the eagerness for some action if you are attacked, or a desire to learn more.

What do you do?

''Maybe their anger will have cooled down in the morning, I too would feel betrayed if things were the other way around. Let's sleep on it and see what the morrow brings. ''
Roald starts making a bedding out of hay and tries to get some sleep, but the events of the past day make it hard for him to stop his brain from reflecting on the day.
With his eyes open, staring at the ceiling, he listens to the sleeping sounds coming from the others.
Nov 1, 2022 5:54 pm
"Well, they seemed to know about us being hired by your father, and then they said they were following our plan..." Albert replies to Theo in an apologetic way. "I figured that meant your father had set it all up. He didn't give us much to go on."

"I will keep watch for a while. Just in case." He says as he tries to get comfortable against a bale of hay. "I'm too rattled to sleep anyway."

"For what it's worth, Theo" He continues. "I'm sorry if I wronged you. Any of you for that matter."

Albert spends some time reflecting on the events of the day.
