Lash sees that he is in the best position to take a shot. Seems wrong to be firing the opening volley but here goes. I take my best shot at their leader. Twang! I see where the shot goes then move through the bushes to square M18.

A silent fist pump to say I got a hit!

As soon as the leader of the brigands draws her own sword and advances, Verin shifts from "just holding a rapier" to an actual fencing stance, planting her back foot and thrusting the tip of her blade towards the Elvish woman.

Rolls

Attack - (1d20+3)

(6) + 3 = 9

Oh crap, looks like we're doing this.

Cualli, looking down the sight of his crossbow will scan from the leader to the nearest brigand holding a ranged weapon and take a shot from cover.
OOC:
oh man, finally a decent roll

Rythorn circles around as closely to the enemies as possible without exposing himself and readies to tackle one within reach.

All at once a flurry of action breaks out, nearly at the same time for both sides, but the Morgrave students have youth on their side, and they manage to move just faster than the brigands. Verin is so fast in fact, that it's only pure luck that keeps the leader from being skewered. She manages to duck back just in time to avoid the sharp point of Verin's rapier, but luck is a fickle mistress, and it often flips sides on a whim, so as she leaps back to what should have been safety, she finds herself squarely in the way of Laaesh's crossbow bolt. Whether prediction or happenstance, it hits her in the shoulder, eliciting a growl of pain.

A the same time, Cualli moves forward* and looses a shot at the nearest archer. The action in the open covers Rythorn's secretive movement as he prepares himself to jump out at anyone who comes near. It takes less than a moment for the brigands to respond.

Unfortunately for Verin, the brigand leader's aim is slightly better than hers, and she comes out of the exchange with a nasty gash along her side. The enemy crossbowmen fire back at Cualli. Both hit, and he too is severely hurt. The only good news is that After they fire, the nearer archer moves closer to Verin, maybe to drag her away, or maybe to finish her off. At any rate, he moves close enough to Rythorn for him to be tackled.

The mages still wait, silently.

OOC:
Lucky break on the crit against Verin there, so only 5 damage. 7 to Cualli. Rythorn, the yellow Arc2 marker is the earliest you can intercept him using your readied action.

All PCs are up!

Verin grits her teeth as the woman's blade digs into her side, refusing to give this criminal the satisfaction of any sort of cry of pain. Without hesitation, Verin thrusts the tip of her rapier towards the elf.

Woah! why did I think standing in the middle of the path was a good place to take cover!?! Let me try that again.

Cualli exhales a giant cloud of fog into I9 and attempts to do a better job of hiding in the brush on i8.

Suddenly there was a battle with great fierceness and lives were at stake. S'sylin was frozen but a moment, realizing he could be hurt. Then he forced himself into action. Going out there risked his life, but doing nothing would assure his doom. He ran at the nearest crossbowman as they reloaded after their volley and swung with his large studded mace!

Lash knows he can't survive being hit. (He has 4hp.). So he stays in cover. But he moves as close as he can get to Rythorn and the tackled archer. (Probably square O-14). And takes a Dodge action.

As quickly as it began, it is over - at least from the brigand's side of things. Verin's riposte strikes true, and the elven woman topples to one knee and then falls over, dead - or nearly so. With her defeat, the rest of the brigands that aren't held break ranks and flee into the jungle, completely broken.

The one brigand Rythorn has ahold of sags as the fight goes out of him. He's been abandoned, and he knows he can't win a five-on-one fight, even if the five are students.

The way to Stormreach is clear.
Oct 19, 2022 10:13 pm
Verin sheathes her rapier and clutches an arm to the gash in her side, taking a moment to grab anything of value -- a weapon, a coin pouch, jewelry, whatever -- from the woman who almost killed her. "We need to get the Professor inside the city, and medical help may not be free. Any resources are valuable at this point." Anyone paying attention would notice the young Teifling is wobbly, no matter how hard she tries to hide it. "Maybe our new friend would like to contribute? Out of the goodness of his heart and all?" Her eyes narrow when she looks at the ruffian being held by the imposing Dragonborn.

Verin quickly checks on the teacher, and begins making her way to Stormreach. "Besides," she adds as she looks back, with a forced smile that looks more like a grimace, "saving your teacher's life has to be worth some extra credit, right?"
OOC:
I have 1 hp. (8 total, 2 damage from the ship and 5 from the elf.) Really glad I didn't miss again! 🤣

Well, his heroic charge had been brief yet efficient. As their foes ran S'sylin had no intention of giving chase. A good number of the group seemed wounded so that would be a poor idea in their state. Instead he looked to their prisoner and patted his studded club in the palm of his hand.
"Perhaps we can find out why the ship fell out of the sky in the first place, and why this bunch was waiting for us..."
Oct 20, 2022 1:12 am
"Anyone got any rope to tie him up? There will be time for interrogation later. We need to get to the city now."

Rythorn keeps his grip tight on his captive.

As the dust settles, Cualli emerges from the cloud of fog and he looks pretty badly hurt, Guys, I'm not doing so hot over here. Cualli breaks off a protruding arrow and makes his way over to the prisoner.
Where I come from they use poison to deal with vermin, not ropes

Lash comes out from the bushes. He sees Verin and Cualli in bad shape.
If nobody has anything better, use his bowstring to tie his hands. But be quick. We need to get to the city, echoing Rythorn.

Lash is quick with suggestions but doesn't really offer to help bind the archer. Instead he looks the two bandits over. Are there any insignia or markings to identify a company or a gang?
Oct 20, 2022 8:23 am
Inspecting the bandit leader by moonlight, Lash is the last to see... It's an elf!

For years, Lash has wondered about and read about the elves of Xendrick as his own heritage. Now he has killed the first one he met! I've killed my own...
Lash is distraught. He turns and runs toward the city.

Lash is the only one who would recognize the tattoos both brigands have inked on their arms. Unfortunately, the exchange seems to have been too much for him.

Falconloft sent a note to Gnellson
OOC:
I think it's safe to assume that you can either bind them, or simply drag them to the city gates. However you get them there.
Oct 20, 2022 2:04 pm
Rythorn binds the captive and heads off towards the city. "Let's leave this jungle before we lose anyone else."
Oct 20, 2022 3:04 pm
S'Sylin helps with the captive and firmly grabs him by the arm to guide him along. As they walked the dark one would ask some questions.
"Out with it. Why did you lot attack us. How did you know about the airship?"
Oct 24, 2022 9:55 pm
The bandit laughs sourly. "You may have beaten us in the fight, but I'm not gonna tell you anything. You'll use whatever I give you to make sure I'm locked in jail for years. I'll take my chances with the magistrates just the way I am, thank you." And then he clamps his mouth shut. You might be able to get him to say more about what he's hinted at, but he's probably going to need some reassurances in return.

And those reassurances will have to be given quickly, because as you round the next corner, you're in visual range of the gate, and the guards manning it. If they see you dragging a prisoner, at the very least they'll come and take him off your hands.
