Do we hear screeching, shouting, etc.?"Gone too long, you think?" he asks Gwydion as he reaches for the haft of his long-handled maul.

I rolled to see. The dice tell me no. The group had moved to far into the jungle to be heard at your location. Sep 30, 2022 11:16 am
"Not sure. These birds are fast. Might have led them quite a chase. Gwydion shrugs.

I just realized that I should give some guidance on damage so you can roll. Fafnir: please roll STR for defense and 1d6 for damage.
Mauve: please roll STR for defense and 2d4 for damage
Sep 30, 2022 1:16 pm
Gonnar nods, shouts twice for his companions — and then, hearing no reply, moves stealthily after them.
Sep 30, 2022 2:07 pm
Fafnir grunts with the effort to deflect the bird's claws. He laughs "The chicken has found its courage!" He gives it a whack with his bow as it retreats.
OOC:
A crit on a defense roll means 1/2 damage back to the creature,which is 1 damage.Last edited September 30, 2022 2:12 pm
Rolls
STR test (13) - (1d20)

Gonnar: how far do you move in to track your friends? Do you leave Gwyndion?Gwyndion: do you leave the cooking bird behind and join Gonnar, or remain at the fire?

Mauve's eyes widen as her body tenses and prepares to fend off the giant bird whose talons look lethal and are coming in fast. With her bow already loaded, she takes a deep breath, steadies herself, and lets the arrow fly.
OOC:
I think Mauve has time to get the arrow off as it was already nocked. She would shoot at it when the bird is 10 feet away and in the air. If not please ignore the attack roll.OOC:
Edit: Ah well, T'is all moot. 😒Last edited September 30, 2022 5:50 pm
Rolls
Bow attack (Dexx 9) - (1d20)
(14) = 14
Strength (defend) 6 - (1d20)
(18) = 18
Bird Dmg - (2d4)
(21) = 3
Sep 30, 2022 6:45 pm
OOC:
Fafnir: the bird you hit is still up, but hurt. It has enough movement to move nearby. Mauve: your bird is close. It used all of its movement to get to you.
Sep 30, 2022 7:04 pm
Fafnir lines up a shot on the chicken that just tried to whack him. "Who wants chicken legs for supper?" he calls out nonchalantly as he lets the arrow fly.
Edit: now it's a 1! Doubled, that makes 2. Fafnir the Cursedives up to his name! 🤣
OOC:
Ooh another crit? 16 damage is a bit overkill but I'll take it!Edit: now it's a 1! Doubled, that makes 2. Fafnir the Cursedives up to his name! 🤣

Peanut gallery comments: Mauve, if you have armor you can use it, remember. Fafnir, shouldn't your damage die be a d6?I also dunno about this crit defense rule, as it sort of neuters the fighter's shield bash ability.
For his part, Gonnar won't go out of sight of the beach, at least for now...

Mauve has a cloth gambeson, so 2 points of armor. She already took her action though.OOC:

Oops, edited the post to roll a d6 instead. I mixed it up with 1st edition where warriors did 1d8.Shield bash can stack with a defense crit, I don't think it's a deal breaker. But I'm fine to leave it to people with more experience with the system to decide.

FAFNIR
You deflect the bird's strike with your bow. It rushes past and prepares to dive into nearby cover. You track it, staring down the length of your arrow. You unleash just as it leaves the ground. The shot is expertly placed and digs deep into the creature's side, just under the right wing. The bird crashes into a branch and falls limp to the ground.
Please roll 1d8 to see if the arrow broke during impact.MAUVE
The bird comes down hard and slams into you. It rakes it's claws across your belly as the collision knocks you to the ground. It's nails are sharp as daggers and shred the front of the gambeson. You feel the bird's scaly feet against your bare skin as it lands on top of you.
Mauve: You have not attacked yet. You have movement and attack. Please note that the bird is CLOSE. You could use the bow, but would roll at disadvantage. Ranged attacks are ideal at FARAWAY. You would have plenty of time to drop the bow and used a melee weapon.HALOR
You rush up aiming to crush the bird's skull as it stands atop Mauve, but it is quick. It pulls back just as you swing and while the blow is solid, it does not connect as well as you would like. The bird is knocked back and stumbles off of Mauve, but holds it's feet.

You had a bow out, but you indicated a shield bash. I don't believe you can hold a shield and fire a bow effectively. I decided to go with the bow as it made more sense. The shield bash and defensive damage would equal 2. The defensive damage and arrow equals 3. The bird had 3 HP left and was killed. Please roll 1d8 to see if the arrow broke during impact.

You were behind the bird in initiative order. The bird was able to move and attack before you can react. You would not be able to loose the arrow in time.Mauve: You have not attacked yet. C1nder: everyone rolled over DEX. That put you all in initiative order equally after the birds. Anyone could roll their attack at any time after the birds were done.Oct 2, 2022 8:39 pm
Gwydion does not have the same stealth and tracking skills of his companions. As Gonnar slips off, Gwydion stays by the fire and begins eating a portion of the cooked bird. No point in letting it go to waste. Besides, if they don't return, he'll want a last meal before the island takes him too.

Just a reminder that Gonnar didn't dive far into the jungle -- mostly he was looking / listening for his friends and any trouble they got up to, but he wasn't going to go out of sight of Gwydion and the fire.Oct 2, 2022 11:24 pm
Mauve is temporarily winded but with a deep breath, she regains her strength and stifles a scream. She's terrified of this bird tearing at her skin and the adrenaline coursing through her veins keeps the pain of its claws at bay for the moment. Letting go of her bow she grabs a knife and stabs at any part of the bird she can manage to make contact with.
