Harrigan says:
OOC:
Treking to the ship, ideally with a companion. Just how far is that?
OOC:
the ship is about 2 miles from your current location. It'll take about 1/2 hour to navigate the ship across the lagoon, around the island, and out to the ship.

Gonnar, Halor, and Hafnir are rowing out to the ship
Mauve & Gwyndion - what are you doing while they're gone?
Oct 13, 2022 11:10 am
Gywdion watches his companions go leaving him alone with Mauve. "So, I know the plan was to explore while some went back to the ship but I don't think Fafnir was supposed to go. Seek out the singer or just wait for them to get back?"
Oct 13, 2022 4:33 pm
OOC:
Since Mauve is talking with Halor, I assumed she was coming along with Halor and Gonnar. Not wanting to divide our numbers further, I went along too. I suggest we stay together. I'm not against splitting the party, but returning to the ship with strength of numbers will reinforce Mauve's status as the captain.

OOC:
Oh, I figured Mauve was talking with Halor before they left for the boat. I'm fine with staying together.

OOC:
So, everyone is going to the boat together. Well, that's unfortunate ... I mean that's good.

OOC:
Whoops, sorry for the misunderstanding. Entirely on me. Are we good with going to the boat?
Oct 14, 2022 3:31 am
OOC:
Yep!

OOC:
To our early graves! the boat!

The ship's boat is on the beach where you left it. You pull the boat back into the lagoon and navigate across the crystal clear water. You make your way around the smaller island and out towards the sea. The ocean water is a bit more difficult to navigate, but with a full crew at the oars, you push your way through easily enough. The main ship sits, lodged deep into the sandbank. It lays motionless. Lazy waves roll past the ship and off towards the island.

Lothar, the largest of the sailors you left behind, breaks the surface of the water near the beached ship. He gasps for air as he grabs hold of the rope ladder and holds a long pole aloft. He calls out when he sees you. "Ahoy! What have you found on the island? Any help to dig us free?" He looks down into the water and then back at your boat. "We are well grounded. I don't know when we'll dig free on our own."
Oct 16, 2022 8:33 am
"Your captain thought it good to bring you some meat we caught last night. We had extra. Alas no help for digging out ships, but perhaps the food will keep you men hale and hearty for when that time comes!"
Oct 16, 2022 5:38 pm
"And plenty more of these giant birds to find in the bushes, too." Fafnir adds.

He shouts out to the ship's deck with his booming voice: "AHOY! CAPTAIN MAUVE HAS RETURNED! PREPARE FOR THE CAPTAIN TO BOARD!"

Fafnir will make for the rope ladder and go first onto the ship in case the men have changed their minds about Captain Mauve.

Mauve scratches her head as she gazes at the beached ship. It looks pretty hopeless to her but looking at it on the bright side, at least they wouldn't starve. And who knows, perhaps they will make some sort of a life for themselves on the island.

As Fafnir makes his dramatic announcement, she whacks him playfully on the shoulder. She's not entirely sure but she thinks he's exaggerating if not outright joking.

"We will see what we can do," she shouts back to Lothar as she tries to act captainly yet not committing to any course of action just yet.

Gonnar is silent as they approach the ship -- his companions raise enough din for three times their number, so he doesn't feel the need to add to it...
OOC:
Gonnar will just stay in the dory unless we're planning to be aboard for an extended period. He'll help hoist the food aboard and such, but he has no desire to set foot back on the ship just yet.

Lothar speaks for the men. They have been working non-stop since you left for the island. They've used any daylight available to dive below and dig at the sand gripping the boat. Sadly, they've had very limited success. Their approach has been to dive below with poles and poke at the sand around the hull, looking to loosen it. There is not much else they can do. The progress is slow. It could take weeks or months to free the boat. The only hope is that the island is struck by some harsh weather. Taller waves might help move the ship.

The sailors are extremely thankful for the cooked bird. Like you, it had been a long time since they'd tasted anything other than salted meats. While the ship's crew savors the meal, they are still timid around you. All of them give Mauve a wide bearth, wishing not to draw her ire.

Well then, Mauve says after the crew have eaten their fill and knowing that a good meal could very well bolster their spirits. You can continue to poke away at the sand below the hull which only serves to bury the vessel deeper, or come with us to the island and see what we can find there. Who knows, you might find that you want to stay! At the very least you will eat! We can tie the ship in case it wants to float away without us. A few can stay behind to guard it. What say you all?
Oct 21, 2022 3:55 am
Lothar looks at Mauve with confusion, "Don't you want us to dig the ship free? It might take time, but how else are we going to get back home?"

The sailors grumble and talk amongst themselves. They argue over the best approach. Some are concerned about getting home to friends and family. They wish to continue working to free the ship. Others argue about how the digging is pointless. They will never get this ship free. The discussion continues back and forth between the two factions, unable to reach any consensus.

Fafnir joins the conversation. "Well, you're gonna need to eat, aren't ya? We're stuck here, at least for a while, and that's going to put a strain on your supplies. Might as well set up a work camp on the island to forage and hunt, get some timbers and such. No use in getting back to sea just to starve to death."

"Either way, I think we're going to be taking a look around. We didn't get a good look yet, might be some more dangers, other than dire chickens. Captain Mauve will probably have some requisitions from supplies for you to get ready for us, we'll let you know."
OOC:
Suggested course of action: Ultimately, I'm not worried how the sailors decide to spend their time. As long as we have access to the boat and it's supplies, they can do as they please. Fafnir has suggested a course of action that might make both sides reasonably happy, but he's not too worried about it.

I say we requisition supplies and start exploring the island in earnest. What supplies should we ask for? I've got a few ideas, though not sure if they're available.

- As much food and fresh water as we can carry, or at least whatever they can spare.
- Rope
- Spades, crowbars
- A ten foot pole
- Navigational instruments
- Parchment and ink for making maps.
- Other suggestions?

Also, Mauve, do you want to take a look in the Captain's quarters for potentially useful items? I figure that bunk is yours by rights now, or at the very least you could sneak in :D

"Fafnir is wise. Heed his advice." Mauve turns to Fafnir and slaps him hard on the chest. "I want to make you my first mate!" Turning back to the crew she declares, "Men. Show him the respect he deserves!"

"I will grab a few things from my quarters. Anyone wishing to stay is welcome to do so. I'm not an unfair captain."

Captain. It had a nice ring to it though it was powerless on land, she thought as she strode below decks making her way to the captain's quarters. Her quarters now.
OOC:
Yes, no need to sneak now. :D
I agree, we should take what we can from the ship that's available to us. Good ideas especially map-making materials. What is the 10 foot pole for? :-)

For the first time, Fafnir is left speechless. Ever since being bit by that demon, he's been loathed by his own people and cast out of his homeland. To be called wise, to have even the respect of one person, was like becoming human again.

That's a dangerous feeling, Fafnir, he warns himself. But he can't help but turn a little red in the face, nor supress a smile.
OOC:
A ten foot pole can have a lot of uses, but the main one is poking things from a safe distance. Like, to set off a pressure plate trap in a dungeon, for example.

We might also want to plan out-of-character what direction we want to explore. I'd suggest to stay along the coast, and go around the perimeter of the island first.

"I could use a sharp blade," Halor says. "My hammer is good for smashing large birds, but it's not got the utility a sharp blade has. I mean to check and see if there's a spare about. Think that might make the requisition list, First Mate Fafnir?" Halor grins, but only means it partly in jest.
OOC:
I'm in agreement with the idea. I was planning on suggesting about the same thing - this small island would make a good place for a more long-term camp while we explore- at least we'll have a place to fall back to. I'd prefer that place to have some sort of shelter up and food/water as needed. No reason the sailors can't be tasked with splitting their time between freeing the ship AND making sure they don't die of dehydration/starvation/exposure in the meantime.
