Mission 1.3: Black Party Clean Up

Matsuki goes through her memories of her betrayal, and how very similar this "speaker for the aliens" is to her employer. The promise of a loyal family that is united through the cunning defiance of the oversized society that forgot about the common man. However, despite how much it had been preached that each individual is special and valued, upon any mistake in the field, the leader will cut all ties to save themselves and the cause. And for the case of Petrov, the follower's fate for failure might be even worse than being thrown to rot in jail...

With that grim understanding, what might be the next course of action now?
Apr 9, 2023 6:30 pm
Matsuki stops at a random intersection, breathing heavily.
Concentrate, Matsuki. You can panic later, for now you need to keep yourself together she thinks to herself

Well... she says with a slightly shaking voice ...we do know now that this guy is probably "the skull" that this being in the ruins mentioned. What do we do now? Have look at the filters?
Apr 20, 2023 7:35 pm
Seeing Matsuki stop, Nikolai cautiously approaches, not entirely sure if his presence is welcome amidst what seems to be a bit of a crisis for his companion. He can't say he himself isn't still shaken either, the images of hallucinations from before still swirling somewhere in the back of his mind. But he would be a bad mercenary if he couldn't internalize his problems until he could address them properly, so he pushes the doubt away - plus Matsuki starts speaking, and his mind is soon back at the more tangible things.

"We might as well. If the commotion in the square attracts security's attention, it will only be easier to sneak in - and if we're caught, we can appeal to being sent on a mission. We already have results to show for it, so that's leverage." Wolf looks around, frowns and sighs. "...I have no idea where we are, haven't worked in this sector before. Let's go find an evacuation plan and figure out how to get to the under construction section."

You're right. There'll probably be a lower security presence. Now seems to be the best time to have a look at the filters.
Matsuki follows Wolf's advice and looks for a map of the area...
Apr 26, 2023 11:23 pm
Looking for a map, Matsuki finds one for emergency evacuation. The North and West have zones labelled as "under development". Seems that the park, cafeteria and working and living spaces are in the middle of the base while the hangers for land and space vehicles are to the East.
It appears that the North will link with the nearby mining operations, while the West will have more residences and other facilities.
OOC:
Will you go North or West to find an air filtering machine? And do you want any further preparations?
Apr 27, 2023 6:03 pm
Matsuki taps her chin while reading the map. Focusing on it helps her calm down a bit. You know what? We could go through the living compartment in the center, grab a few construction worker's clothes, disguise ourselves and then slip into the construction area either to the north or the west. I don't have any preference in that regard. What do you say?
Apr 27, 2023 8:40 pm
Wolf stares at Matsuki, then wordlessly looks down at his coat and his gauntlets. There is a short pause as he examines his attire, considering. "I suck at disguises, and my scars are too recognizable when people pay attention," he says finally, flexing his fingers and making the claws pop up. "But I am still technically an employed electrician here, and no one ever checks permissions for routine maintenance checks. If I stroll in and say I need to look at the wiring or change a lightbulb, who's going to question it?" Wolf grins. "You can be my assistant, and if there is anyone in the area with the filters, I can always do an obnoxious safety inspector routine while you sweep them. Probably will work better if it's residential area, since mining ones might actually care about who goes there."

OOC:
I'll take it that Matsuki agrees too.
The group now heads towards the residential area that is under construction. With Nikolai taking the lead, it seems that everything will go well.

At the border, there isn't any guards, perhaps they are all busy handling the potential commotion at the park, or even that they doubt anyone would want to illegally intrude.

As the Spacers make their way worming around the stacks of materials and scaffolding, they can hear a set of boots making their way towards them...
OOC:
If the group wants to hide or find another way, one person can make a Dex save at advantage. If Nikolai attempts to convince that he is allowed in, he can try to confront the worker and make his excuse.
May 22, 2023 8:13 pm
Wolf glances at Matsuki, then steps forward so that his coat blocks her from view for the first few moments - giving her an opportunity to slip away if she wants to. He isn't particularly concerned about being discovered himself as he's perfectly ready to bluff and threaten, but offering the option feels like a thing to do in the moment - he might not be a team player, but he knows value of having multiple plans ready to go. Perhaps she's already spotted the filters and can go for them while he's being a distraction, or perhaps she is willing to make it a heist in plain sight and play the role of Nikolai's assistant; either way, they'll adjust on the go.
OOC:
I tried to leave it up to Scrol for what Matsuki will do. :D
Whatever Matsuki does, Nikolai straightens his coat, pulls out a multimeter from his bag and makes his best expression of an inspector who just discovered multiple safety violations and is ready to tear a new one to whoever is the poor soul in charge. He even makes a show of leaning towards a stack of materials and examining it as if it were an affront to the very notion of workplace regulations.

Wolf! I'll hide. If those workers are brainwashed and attack us I can strike quickly from the shadows. Matsuki whispers
She runs up to a stack of construction materials and leaps behind them
FlyingSucculent says:
OOC:

OOC:
Thanks ;)

EDIT: Oh I think I mixed up the roll notation. Anyways the 8 should be the valid roll which would mean that Matsuki passes the save with her 11 dex

Matsuki climbs the pile of white tilings and finds a space to easily hide behind. Meanwhile, Nikolai finds himself ready as the worker walks into view, half distracted by a clipboard he is reading in hand.

Nikolai's acting as a safety inspector is really convincing, as the worker, looking to be aged about 30, gets anxious trying to answer the unhappy inspector's questions and accusations. Apparently, the safety regulations for the facility construction here are indeed lax, as the worker only apologised and asked what he can do for Nikolai. The worker is trying to keep Nikolai from entering deeper by saying that there is no need to. Whether he doesn't want to trouble his boss, or he is a member of the cult hiding inside, is difficult to tell right now.
OOC:
You can choose to still post what Nikolai says and asks if there is something you want to know.
Matsuki can choose to move ahead within the hidden narrow path as the worker is fully distracted.
May 27, 2023 6:19 pm
Matsuki bets on Wolf to keep the worker distracted and as swiftly and quietly as a cat she rushes deeper into the construction area, hoping to find a filter somewhere.
She keeps her ears open in case the worker pushes past Wolf
Jun 3, 2023 7:59 pm
The worker's blatant attempts to lead Nikolai away from the deeper sections of the construction site are quite suspicious, but during his years as a mercenary Wolf always followed the principle of staying laser-focused on his current goal - and their current goal are filters, not whatever mysterious operation is run beyond the scenes. So he allows the man to steer him away, hopefully giving Matsuki more of an opportunity to look around in the process, and continues pressing about the lack of fire safety and proper utilization containers on site.

When the worker pauses in his apologies and asks what he can do for him, Nikolai makes a show of looking through his bag, frowning slightly. "Hmm, I suppose there is something else I'd like to ask. It's not particularly in *my* job description, but some of my colleagues from mental health department mentioned that a lot of personnel in nearby sections has been complaining about insomnia and auditory hallucinations lately. Have you encountered anything similar on this site? Perhaps more workers than usual calling in sick?"

Matsuki will move forwards through the poorly placed barriers and stacks of containers. It seems no one is here, perhaps its also break time their, or that the construction efforts is purposely slow. In any case, the residential units can be easily found by their rows of doorless rooms stacked on top of each other accessible by stairs for each level. Large tubes seem to connect to one small storage room. Another such room has bundles of cable leading to it. Another thing to note is that one of the residential rooms have a spray paint on the wall that reads "DO NOT DISTURB".
Meanwhile, Nikolai will get a response from the scrawny worker.

"Ah? Oh, yes. I do hear about quite a number of my colleagues feeling awful. I personally don't get it, but it seems to affect people badly enough to change their personalities. Some more depressed than usual, or maybe more scared. Some have become more confident in a... strange way. I think it is because of some club activity they are joining. So far, they are not willing to call in sick, since they act as if it is nothing. But those that are concerned talk about some kind of repeating nightmare.

But between you and me, I recommend that you don't ask anyone else about this issue. Some will start looking at you like a ghost, or maybe they will ask you to join a secret meeting with their friends. I don't care for club activities that involve topics unrelated to me."
Jun 18, 2023 2:39 pm
"Depression? Nightmares? Now, we can't have that in a productive work environment," Nikolai makes a show of scribbling into his pretend inspection notes. "Then again, we can hardly ban a club either - recreation is just as important, wouldn't you say? Although it is quite interesting that it seems to be so popular among the people, and yet there is little concrete information on what this club is about. But hey!" He slaps the worker's shoulder. "Not my job, and I'm sure glad for it after all these rumors; don't want to touch all this with a ten foot pole."

Hopefully, if there is some connection between the Visage Conversation Club and this worker, then at least Wolf has convinced him that he - and the station superiors - don't care about the issue more than to meet the requirements. Always important to downplay an investigation.

"Now, what can you tell me about the conditions of work in here? Any specific complaints about ventilation, safety, shift time? Don't worry, it's all anonymous - if there is anything you'd like to change, we'll do our best to accommodate."

Large tubes to a storage room? This could be where the filters are Matsuki thinks. She swiftly and silently walks to the storage room where the tubes go and carefully opens the door.
Jun 28, 2023 6:09 am
The worker thinks about Nikolai's question before answering."Yeah, I do hear some complaints about the pay gradually lowering or being stagnant. Our company all the way back home have decided that sending more workers to expanding colonies will make us less important somehow over time and chose to subtly lower our salaries. I know my older construction team members feel resentment to new comers, especially the scientists as each new invention meant less of us are needed.

Those who complained about this the most seem to join this club. They already have their own circle of friends, but they seem to be more... unfriendly than usual. I mean that they collectively choose to do less work and making us young ones handle more of the work. If you do do something about this, please don't mention me, or else... they will make me take a week off."

He gave quick winks before continuing.

"Anything else? As for the ventilation, we had to handle working with the outside air when installing the new sections. So we had to get used to the unfiltered air. I am still not fully used to it, so I mainly work in installing the electrical systems. Even if I do this, I am not told everything about the new machines. Especially the machine responsible for filtering the air. That is top secret, so I can't touch such things. Only the architectural higher ups get to understand how they all work.

As for safety, we are pretty lax. So I am kind of surprised to see an inspector like you here too. I guess our standards will have to return to being strictor, huh? And our shift time is decent. Because we are not in a rush to complete our project, our seniors get to push their work onto us without suspicions from the management. Oh well, such is life on the frontier..."

Meanwhile, Matsuki goes to the room with tubes connecting it. Peeking inside, it is lit up by a dim light bulb. Along the walls, the tubes go through a series of bulky and boxy devices. The one that stands out the most is smaller than the others, with ribbons of black and yellow stripes, and warning signs not to touch the equipment otherwise the worker can be fired.

Before she fully step in, Matsuki the corporate spy manages to spot a figure slumped against one of the bulky machines. The man is wearing the construction clothes, and a bottle is held in his hand. He seems to be asleep, his snores hidden under the motor noise.

Dammit Matsuki whispers. She shortly thinks about her options. She doesn't want to kill the guy who's just doing his job. She also doesn't have anything to bind him on her.
Eventually she decides to try to open the filter container as silently as possible.
OOC:
If Matsuki is allowed to carry her rifle along her on the station
Matsuki leans her rifle to the wall right next to her in order to be able to grab it immediately should the worker awaken. She won't shoot him but threaten to do so.
OOC:
Nice roll! Flawless execution :P

Nikolai files the information in his mind, remembering what the worker shared for a slim chance that it might be useful later. Disgruntled low salary employees unionizing into an alien-following nightmare club? This sounds straight like something from his past in the Union, the sort of rumours his family would be snickering about at a fancy dinner party. Ugh, what sweet memories it brings. Not to say that the mercenaries were any less likely to believe in such stories... And after the hallucinations at the plaza and the black mold? He certainly believes in *something*.

"No problem - as I said, this is all anonymous." He nods in response to the worker's wink, then looks up at the closest ventilation vent thoughtfully. "Glad to hear the air isn't causing any abnormal problems here. After the whole situation with the last expedition, some of the doctors are concerned about fungi spores and the like - I hope I don't need to remind you to take proper sanitary precautions when dealing with the planetary atmosphere, so I'll spare you the usual lecture. Way your hands, clean your equipment, all that. Also maybe avoid the weird club." He leans closer to the man, conspiratorially lowering his voice. "Between you and me, I am mostly here as a token effort from the superiors, so they probably won't press on it too hard, if at all - but between spending money on better equipment or calling a club the root of all evil, we both know what they'll choose."

Wolf straightens up, looking around to note how far away they are from the direction Matsuki went in at this point. Should he try to go after her? If she is in trouble, maybe he can pull the "I'm the authority, give the perpetrator to me" play. But on the other hand, giving her more time might be a better idea... "Alright, I think I'm done with almost everything here. Although..." He makes a show of glancing up and down the man. "You said that you install electrical systems? I am a little bit of an electrician myself, you know. Want to grab a cup of coffee and discuss how bad electrical equipment on this station is? We can call it an extended interview, so our superiors don't get all bothered." Wolf tries to be suave. Keyword, tries.
OOC:
Look, there are only so many inspector questions I can come up wth. XD

Matsuki managed to successfully stealthed her way through. She makes sure she is completely silent, that every step and tampering with the filtering machine is quieter than the snores of the napping worker. Gentle yet quick, she easily removes the outer casing that reveals the rows of multicoloured large wafers. They have an odd chemical scent, but nothing too strong so as to irritate one to cough or awake.

A writing on the side of the filter frame is made in marker: "Property of Dr Wu Kehui. Please do not steal my design. I can send you to jail back home."

There are also various tubes carrying liquids that connects into or out of a few of the framed sections. Further labeling done in cursive marker writing can be seen on opaque scotch tapes.
While the device is new to her, she is able to tell that one of the wafers are missing due to an empty slot.
The worker, whose name is Conor McCarthy, as seen on his tilted name tag, agrees to follow with the friendly inspector for the coffee and interview.
