Chapter 3: Night of the Green Moon

Sep 22, 2022 12:29 pm
During the afternoon before the Green Moon ceremony, the Broken Tusks share a hearty meal of stewed meat and spirits. Meanwhile, Argakoa’s songsingers in training take turns telling origin myths.

Argakoa is last and tells a story of the "first winter."

The first winter turned the whole world and even the moon above an ashen white. When spring finally came, the moon was so happy she gave birth to a river of stars. This river, which many Hallit-speakers call the Moontail, is still visible in the night sky from spring until autumn. Come winter, the moon protects her children by hiding them under a blanket of darkness. The Night of the Green Moon celebrates the beginning of spring, when the tundra thaws to reveal green grass and the moon uncovers her children."

After the feast, you proceed as a group from their encampment to Rockloom. Merthig, the Firekeeper, lights a large bonfire in the middle of the standing stones. She asks your group, as well as Pakano, to place the water baskets you filled at Gornok River in around it. "This fire is good," she proclaims proudly to cheers from the gathered crowd.

"By the grace of Sister Cinder’s gift—fire!—we know right from wrong. We choose right!" More cheers erupt from the revelers. "The water represents life. When combined, fire and water can produce good food, like stew. Though they aren’t always conducive to one another—placing too much importance on a single life or on the lives of a group can stifle the greater good. Water and fire are integral to our ways, and they allow our following to survive the harsh realm."
OOC:
Will pause it here so you can react and post how you prepared for the festival (if you did anything at all).
Sep 22, 2022 6:07 pm
Koram made a point to tidy up his own personal belongings as carefully as possible and what meager possessions he deemed most important in the case of leaving quickly he set into a single pack, ready to be grabbed at a moment's notice.

He also took a moment to pull Talina, his friend and lover, to the side. Without going into great specifics, he asked her to do the same - gather what she needs, no more and no less, best if it can fit on her back, and be vigilant about potential danger. He tries not to worry her, and says its only a precaution, but if danger arises, she should use what time she saved by preparing ahead to help get the Following on its feet and moving as quickly as possible.

They go together to the feast and enjoy a lovely time together before heading to the ceremony itself, basking in the flames of the bonfire and feeling its warmth, and their own warmth, combined. At the right moments Halor cheers and raises his arms in triumph. "We choose right!" he shouts with the others.

He tries to allow himself to relax and enjoy the evening, but he has a hard time shaking the feeling that something wrong was coming.

After a successful day Igbork went home.
The next day his daughters presented him with colourful stones that they bound to thin leather straps. They insisted on binding them to his armor so that he 'looks proper'.
After a small breakfast and a bit of playing with his children he urges them to pack up their things.
Why do we have to pack up? Do we have to be worried? his wife asks.
Worried? Probably not. But we should be careful. We found some signs of potential trouble but it should interfere with the Night of the Green Moon.

During the feast Igbork is mostly silent and watching his kids.

Along with the other he cheers during the ceremony. He pulls Donia to his side.
Listen carefully. You can learn a lot from Argakoa about Sister Cinder....

Once he's done for the day, Atticus returns to his hut. Taking his time Atticus goes over his Armor and weapons with a practiced eye. Once that's completed, he packs up his belongings and makes sure everything is secure.

Setting his pack by the door, in case they do have to leave quickly, Atticus gets a hood night's sleep. The next day finds Atticus in a fine mood, despite what events may happen. Getting ready for the ceremony Atticus follows everyone to the site.

Once the ceremony begins, Atticus gets caught up in the moment and shouts along with everyone else.

Grandfather Eiwa

Grandfather Eiwa
The standing stones of Rockloom rise from the plain, each animal sculpture glowing orange in the last flush of the setting sun. Grandfather Eiwa beams at the assemblage, his wrinkled face a bit more youthful with the addition of colorful paints.

He stays silent for a moment. Then, like thunder, he releases a guttural shout. "Ah!" he booms. The rest of the following shouts back in unison, then turns quiet again. The old man smiles.

"It is a good night," he pronounces. "The Green Moon has graced us with good weather. The Gornok River has blessed us with water. And our scouts have honored us with good food."

"Tonight, we mark the moment winter turns to spring. We also mark the transition from friend to follower." The elder takes a handful of small tokens from Mammoth Lord Merthig. "Together, let us honor our newest Tusks." The crowd whoops and cheers as he motions toward the newest members of the following

"Will Atticus Crownguard, Igbork Armbreaker, Shaggy Shemven, Koram Dragon-tongue, Pakano and Grom please rise. Some of you are new additions, and some have been born and raised in the following. Your training as scouts and recent service to the following havs elevated your efforts.""

He hands each of you a pendant carved in the shape of your house animals. While Shaggy receives a small but beautiful black-and-blue hawk's-eye gemstone. Tears of joy streams down Shemven's hairy face.

As he gives you the talismans, he offers you a heartfels congratulation.
OOC:
The talisman is a Broken Tusk Pendant

Edit: Sorry Grom. Wrote Igbork twice.
Sep 24, 2022 10:51 pm
Igbork takes the talisman, closes his hand around it, holds it to his chest and bows his head. He too has to hold back tears.
Thank you. I will strive to be the best man I can be in order to help the clan.
OOC:
I think it's nice that Igbork is so important that he is mentioned twice ;P
Sep 25, 2022 3:01 am
Koram feels a deep well of pride. "Thank you, Honored Grandfather," he says, "It is a great boon to be welcomed officially into the Following. I came from outside the Broken Tusk, but the Following has offered me a home." He looks out at the others, particularly to those standing with him. "And a family," he adds, "I couldn't ask for more. I too will strive to do right by the clan with each breath I take."
Sep 26, 2022 9:20 am
The druid can find no words with which to reply to Grandfather Eiwa and instead bows his head as the pendant his placed in his hand. Grom's fingers wrap tightly around the pendant and he steps backwards with his gaze still upon the ground. Turning away, Grom looks for a quiet spot with enough light for him to examine this sigil which he had longed for.

Grom's fingers glide gently over the smooth ivory. The druid imagines the mammoth from whose tusk this precious pendant came. For a moment he is one with that animal. With a silent prayer of thanks, Grom places the string to which the pendant is attached over his head and rejoins the rest of his newly honoured party
Sep 26, 2022 12:03 pm
Pakano
Grandfather Eiwa is about to step back when Pakano raises his voice. "Aren’t you forgetting something?"

All eyes turn toward the young man, who has stood up and is glaring at Eiwa. "It is time, Grandfather," he says, his face flush, "to announce your successor. Who will become leader of Falcon House?"

Grandfather Eiwa
Broken Tusks gasp and whisper at the boy’s insolent question, but Eiwa’s face doesn’t crack. "You are headstrong, Pakano," the elder says soberly. "And hasty. Tonight is not for you, but for all Broken Tusks."

Pakano
"If not now, then when?" Pakano cries. "And if not me, then who? Don’t tell me you’re actually mistaking these fools for true followers of the Broken Tusk?"

Eiwa offers no response, only a stern glare. Pakano whips his face toward the other pendant recipients and scowls, his eyes full of hate. "You’ll be sorry," he growls. Then, to everyone, he begins to launch into a tearful tirade, "You’ll all be sorry—"

Before Pakano can finish his rant, a loud, oscillating cry interrupts him. In the darkness beyond the standing stones, a torch flame appears, then another, and then several more. Everyone, including Pakano, looks around in confusion. Murmurs rustle throughout the following. Someone begins yelling. Monstrous faces covered in blood-red markings emerge from the fiery darkness. From that moment, everything else is a blur.

Atticus throws a spear at the oncoming attacker, but it goes wide, hitting the ground behind him.

Haitith charges forth and sets its jaws into the attacker who screams in pain as he falls to the ground. The first enemy has fallen.

More enemies follows though. One charges at the group, but don't quite reach you. The other gets a little closer to Haitith and throws his club at the dragon. It hits it hard in the head.

Shaggy is steps forward and helps grandfather Eiwa escape the immediate battlefield.

Pakano follows them, helping getting Eiwa to safety.

Igbork lets loose with an array of arrows, one of which hits the attacker.

Atticus moves up to the closest incoming warrior and with a heavy thrust skewers the attacker.

The last enemy gets a horrible burst of lightning from Koram before Haitith charges forward and ends his life.

You stand there for only a moment when you hear cries from the other side of the rockloom.

Torch-wielding raiders hack and bludgeon people who were celebrating just minutes before. The leaders of the four Broken Tusk houses shout for their followers to flee toward the Gornok River. Distant archers, obscured by darkness, spray volleys of arrows into the fleeing crowd. The full moon casts a pale and sickly light on the faces of the pitiless raiders as they hurl sacks of burning pitch into the encampment. One burnbearer has managed to mount a mammoth and set its fur ablaze. The rider’s war cry is eclipsed only by the screeches of the flaming mammoth.

You can see Nakta the healer help Wipa out of harms way while she screams that Wipa has gone into labor.

Four more assailants are coming from the other side while one of your broken tusk hunters have joined the fray with you.

Though in the thick of battle, Koram's training kicks in. He pulls out his healer's tools, kept close at hand for these occasions, and takes a moment to do a quick mending of the open wound on Igbork's body from the spear while Haitith approaches. He then turns his healer's touch to himself to stitch up his own wounds. A crude attempt, but it'll do some good at least.

Another volley of arrows escape Igbork’s bow, though this time he is less accurate. Possibly due to his injury, still one arrow hits it mark.

Then Atticus runs forward and slashes at the closest enemy. He then raises his shield.

The enemies squad leader charges forward and throws his spear at Atticus. But the fighter deftly dodges the missile.

The last of the attackers charges in and moves into position to flank Atticus.

Haititih moves back towards the attackers while Koram puts some healing salve on the worst of his own and Igbork’s wounds.

The hunter, which you now recognize as one named Katjuk, charges into melee and clubs at the last attacker to arrive. The burnbearer is too focused on Atticus and the hunters greatclub hits him right in the back of the head hard enough to split the skull.

I'm going to tryout Power Attack on the red enemy. It says it counts as 2 attacks, so I'll applythe necessary penalty

Atticus finds his thoughts being pulled back to when his was fighting the demon armies at the world wound. Atticus’ opportune attack almost hit its target, but he dodges out of the way.

Igbork draws his sword and hits the attacker in front of him. His first stab hits its mark, but by his second blow, his foe is aware and able to avoid the hit altogether.

Atticus focuses on the battle and with a mighty swing he’s almost able to cleave his foe in two.

The squad leader don’t take the time to draw a new spear, and instead steps forward and tries to bash Atticus with his shield boss. Atticus is able to put up his own shield in time and block the attack.
OOC:
OOC: Igbork, drawing your sword is in fact an Interact Action.

Atticus, Power Attack does count as two attacks, but you don’t get the penalty until your next attack. That means that if you made another attack after a Power Attack that one will be at -10 instead of -5. Do be aware that you don’t add your Str bonus to this second dice of damage though. Power Attack can be very effective against creatures with resistances or targets with high AC so you’re likely to only hit with your first attack.

And nice use of Raise a Shield. He only missed due to the shield bonus.

Koram and Grom up next and I'll add inn Katjuk's action with you.

Round 4:
Character Initiative Acted Statuses
Hunter 2 27 X
Igbork 19 X
Atticus 18 X
Longshield 18 X
Koram 13
Katjuk, Broken Tusk Hunter 9
Grom 6

"Okay, Haitith, show them what you're made of!" Koram yells.

The dragon moves to the enemy hunter's side and lashes out with its jaws just as Koram releases a blast of electrical current through the air, sparking from the hunter to the shielded enemy.

Koram's electic attack have a devastating effect on the raid leader, and he is barely standing when Grom's spear knocks him into the ground.

Meanwhile Haitith has pounced on the last remaining attacker and with an equally devastating attack he take a big bite of the enemy's jugular.

With the initial wave defeated, you can finally catch your breath. "Look!" Katjuk exclaims and points down at the bottom of the hill. In the distance, still far off, but getting closer by the moment you see hundreds of tiny fires marches towards Rockloom.
Oct 11, 2022 5:28 pm
Koram stands tall, a hand on Haitith's head, looking into the distance for only a moment. "We planned for this, even if we didn't want it to be. We must go. We must all go NOW!" Together they break into a run, heading to the rest of the Following to announce the urgency of their flight.
Oct 11, 2022 9:08 pm
Igbork looks around him like a wild animal in a trap. Koram's words bring him into a clearer state of mind.
He picks up his bow.
Koram's right! Everyone follow us! We prepared a way out! he bellows
He wants to run with the others but he has an idea. He reaches for his backpack and takes a torch. He lights it.
If they wanna play with fire, fire is what they'll get he murmurs
OOC:
Igbork will be the in the rear. When he's sure that everyone is in their way he'll light up whatever is flammable in order to make the chase more difficult for the attackers...

Letsua
You meet up with the bigger crowds, that are still in the process of evacuating.

Letsua bows his head and raises a hand, waiting for everyone to be silent. "Not in my long memory has such violence befallen us during what was intended to be a joyful celebration. My heart wilts with grief. Sister Cinder give us strength to take up the fire and find bright righteousness in this dim hour. We must return to camp, gather our things, and leave as quickly as possible." As Letsua finishes speaking, the sound of an infant’s cry echoes across Rockloom. The cry is followed by another, and then another. Wipa has just given birth to triplets.

You help out the following getting back to camp and pack it up and get on the way. Luckily you had prepared well and its an easy job. Once you do a proper head count, you find you've only lost Pakano as well as 2 other hunters in the attack.
OOC:
You all level up to level 2 now. Remember we are playing with the Free Arcehtype alternate rules, which means you get a free level 2 Archetype Dedication you qualify for. Feel free to roleplay in the camp as you set up for rest. There's some extra rules that I will post about before we continue.

Koram seeks out Grandfather Eiwa. "Honored Grandfather, I hope you are uninjured. Pakano left the battle to help get you to safety, what became of him?" he asks, troubled by the young man's disappearance.
OOC:
Yay, level 2! Grats everyone!

"He went back into the fighting. Did you not see him?" Letsua replies from her place next to where Grandfather Eiwa is sitting on a boulder. He looks tired and is panting. You have never seen the old man looking this weak.

Letsua rest a hand on Grandfather Eiwa's back. "Get rest old friend."

Grandfather Eiwa only nods, he seems to frail to speak right now. Two members of the following lead him into a tent.

Letsua turns his attention back to your group. "We need to discuss where to go. Our migration usually heads north, but with the Burning Mammoths in that direction, we may have to find another route."
Oct 13, 2022 8:48 am
"We need a safe place to regroup, heal our wounded, and defend if necessary. Do we know of any places like that?"
Oct 13, 2022 11:54 am
I would not worry about Pakano. It's possible he got separated from the group while fighting. It may be a simple matter of him catching up. As far as where we need to go. We definitely need to find a safe place to regroup and tend to our wounded. Are there any areas like that nearby...in the other directions?
Oct 13, 2022 10:13 pm
Igbork furrows his eyebrows, he wants to punch something but suddenly a feeling of peace engulfs him. He can feel Sister Cinder in his heart and it both soothes him and clears his mind. Ironic that in this most heated of moments he feels the touch of the deity...
He looks to Wipa. A shame that your children have to endure this as their first experience in life. But with Sister Cinder's help we will find a peaceful place to raise them
He draws a crude map of the area into the dirt
I think we should move to the south east and then east. To the woods nearby, through them and then to the mountains. There we can regroup.

"Gleaming Sun Lake," Letsua replies to Koram. "We usually spend a couple of weeks there, fishing and gathering reeds."

"Their forces are greater than ours, which can be an advantage as well," Letsua muses. "We are more agile, and should be able to make it there ahead of them."

Koram holds his finger to the spot on the maps, nodding as he looks over the surrounding area. "Yes, this is as good a plan as any, so long as we leave a place for us to escape to, if needed. We wouldn't want to get stuck with our backs against the lake." He traces a finger south, along the lakes shore and east, to the trees, and looks to Igbork. "Then if we must run farther, we can use the forest to our advantage."

Grandfather Eiwa
The next two days goes by in a blur. You keep as fast a pace as possible, and for the first night since the attack you can't see flames of the Burning Mammoths at night. You are about to go to bed for the night when you are called to Grandfather Eiwa's side. He has taken a turn for the worse, and it might be his last night.

As you pass into the tent, nearby mourners repeat a simple chant: "By Fandarra’s blood you were born; into Blood Mother’s womb you return." Argakoa the Songsinger is already at Eiwa’s side, repeating the chant. She lowers her voice so you and Eiwa can speak, but she doesn’t stop chanting.

"Young Tusks," whispers the dying man, his deeply lined face and wavering voice so brittle and ancient. "It’s time I told you the rest of the legend of the Primordial Flame. I have already told Songsinger Argakoa. Her mind is like soft wood. She carves my ramblings into stories, so she can help you on your quest"—he takes a deep, ragged breath—"when I am gone."

Argakoa gently places her strong hand on Eiwa’s shoulder. The old man tells his tale in halting gasps. "My mother, Sidke. She and the others—the ones who would become the first Broken Tusks—they took the flame to Red Cat Cave. East of here. They hid it there, under the protection of a noble beast named Syarstik. Every year after, we would go to make sure it was safe."

"But," Eiwa wheezes, "it was not. A handful of winters, and then it was gone. My mother saw with her own eyes. The terrible, tormented spirit of Syarstik. The empty dais, where the flame once rested. Syarstik’s enraged spirit attacked her, and she fled with the other Tusks. We never went back."

He lets out a sickening cough before finishing. "Go there. We do not know who took the flame. But Syarstik, angry as he is, might still remember. Calm his spirit and find the flame. We have waited far too long. It is time to use the Primordial Flame to reunite our people."
Oct 17, 2022 5:38 pm
Honored Grandfather, I will proudly accept this quest. It has been many years, yet it feels like only yesterday when I was accepted into this gathering. You gave me a home and a family when I had none. When do you want us to leave?
Oct 17, 2022 6:13 pm
Igbork bows his head and murmurs a prayer to Sister Cinder.
With some tears in his eyes he raises his head after he's finished I too will do anything it takes to get the Primordial Flame in order to heal the schism
Oct 18, 2022 7:48 pm
Koram finds difficulty in looking up from the ground, but meets the elder's eyes at this request, nodding, "Yes, of course Grandfather. Just as the Following has taken me in, I will do what I must for my family. For the Broken Tusk."
Oct 18, 2022 7:58 pm
Grom walks towards Grandfather Eiwa, looking at the Songsinger as he does. Watching Argakoa's lips closely, Grom very quietly takes up the chant.... By Fandarra’s blood you were born; into Blood Mother’s womb you return... The druid reaches for Grandfather Eiwa's hand and leaning into him, peering through watery eyes, says "Sister Cinder bless you and keep you Grandfather. You will live on in our hearts and words and deeds". Grom kisses Grandfather's hands and then turns and re-joins the others
