Climbing up, Lambert dusts himself off. He looks back into the hole, and draws Trusova’s attention.

"Size of it. Bloody good thing it’s dead."

He starts to turn and walk back to the lock box. He stoops to pick it up.

"Right. Where’s he got to? Let’s get out of here before anything else happens! Long night!"
Apr 8, 2023 6:26 pm
Trusova charts a safe course through the bone field back to the door for the two of them, using her spear to probe for unstable ground. Still perturbed by the shriek, she responds to Lambert quietly: "That's an understatement. Did you catch what made that shriek? And where the fuck did Banio go?" She half wondered if he had fallen into a sink hole in the bone field, and scanned the ground for signs of rustling or recent disturbance.

Testing the weight of the box, as if it would give some hint as to the value inside, Lambert sucks air through his teeth.

"Take your pick, I say. Ghosts, elves, fish men, grey Lambert-eating snake things. That…" he finishes, casting a hand back to the hole.

"He’s probably back by the steps. This place stinks something bad!"

With Wolke carrying the heavy, locked box, Trusova carefully leads the way back. The pair has made it perhaps halfway to the door, climbing up the sloping, remains-strewn floor when the unseen thing above them looses a half-dozen piercing, partly synchronized screams and tries to prevent their exit. Two of the gaunt, not quite skeletal heads detached from the main mass of the horrifying thing, still connected by rubbery, serpentine appendages -- thick, long, tongue-like tendrils that extend and connect neck stump to bloated thorax.

The screeches are surprising enough, but when the monster attacks from above, launching what first seem like biting, disembodied heads at each of the dungeoneers... hearts leap to throats and chaos reigns!
OOC:
Combat -- Round 1, the creature gets to make two attacks before you both get to go. It's trying to bite you, and if the bit is a nasty one (5-6 on the damage die), the thing is clamped on and you'll be hauled backwards and upwards.

Choose your defense skills and roll them, please. Remember if you win, you'll potentially do damage back to the creature. These rolls are at -2 for this attack only as you didn't see it coming, but were certainly generally wary.

It's hard to imagine you won't get a good look at the thing screaming; if you do -- make that Pluck check as well.

PS: Also forgot my +5s. So Wolke's fighting off a 23, Trusova a 25.

Rolls

Attack on Wolke, Potential Damage - (1d20+10, 1d6+2)

1d20+10 : (8) + 10 = 18

1d6+2 : (6) + 2 = 8

Attack on Trusova, Potential Damage - (1d20+10, 1d6+2)

1d20+10 : (10) + 10 = 20

1d6+2 : (1) + 2 = 3

Trusova is taken unawares! She tries to protect herself from the snapping jaws with her spear, but she can't avoid its slavering maw entirely.
OOC:
I'll wait to subtract those 3hp off my sheet in case there's some hidden rider effect or something :D

Blood is spilled as fangs tear through cloth and living flesh -- and Lambert winces as the snake-necked skull-thing biting him sinks its teeth in deep, fixing itself to him. When he turns, he gets an eyeful of their looming attacker -- all ghastly, leering faces, bloated, bulbous flesh, and somewhere at the edges of his vision, spider legs and writhing tendrils!
OOC:
Misspoke earlier. Didn't mean to indicate you'd -immediately- (this round) be hauled away. It's affixed to Lambert, and starting with the thing's next turn, it can try to haul him away. (Will require Opposed Skill checks, which will have a bit of nuance.) Remember to both reduce your Stamina after reducing damage with armor rolls, if you have them. (I don't think you do.)

Lambert's Pluck check results in him screaming and losing 1 Pluck, but also keeping control.
[ +- ] Pluck Results Again
And to paint the picture further, you're both within a move of the door, and are on safer ground in terms of the slope. Both of you could slip outside on your turns (which are now, you're both up), but Lambert will have to test Athletics or Endurance if he wants to move towards the door. Further questions, let's discuss in the Discord.

Climbing the Spire
Banio hears a scream behind him -- Lambert -- and this only serves to speed his flight up the stairs, past the hole in the wall their other attacker emerged from. His lantern swings crazily as he runs, taking the ancient stairs as fast as he can...
OOC:
Roll 1d3 to determine how many rounds you flee, Banio.

Trusova whips her spear around and tries to sever the snake-neck that harries Lambert. Then she backs away, hoping to get closer to the exit. "Lambert, fall back, damn you!" she calls out, but she's not sure if Lambert can make it. In the back of her mind, it dawns on her that she might have a very difficult decision to make in the next few heartbeats.
OOC:
Attacking with the aim of freeing Lambert!

Rolls

The eel-like appendage connecting the skull to the main, pulsing mass of bulbous horror splits easily, like rotten flesh that's been in the sun a week trying to resist a fisherman's sharp gutting knife. Three or four ruined faces howl, including the one on the head that now tumbles to the floor, where it bounces and rolls into the pit. Lambert is free once more!

But as the pair run for the door, more black skulls detach and snake forward, blind eye sockets blazing with dark energy, jaws wide and snapping...
OOC:
Slight goof on the roll to defend Tru's spear attack. That +9 should have been a +10... so still a failure. Trusova strikes a nasty blow and severs the neck of the thing.

Round 2

The creature is up first, but since it doesn't have the jump on you this time, it doesn't get to make both attacks before either of you can go. Basically, you'll take turns: Creature, PC, Creature, PC, PC. (Three PCs now as Banio regains his wits, outside.)

Creature Attack 1 -- on Trusova. Rolled a 28! 5 damage to Stamina incoming if she can't beat the 28 as she fights back, presumably with her spear. 15 damage if she rolls 9 or less...

After that roll, any one of the three PCs can act. Then the creature will attack again.

Rolling... phew!
Trusova knows that severing the neck would draw the creature's ire. She braces herself for the onslaught and barely hangs on!

"Move it, Ninefingers!" she calls out to Lambert, urging him toward the exit.

Wincing with pain, Lambert struggles on. He lumbers forward, still carrying the box, with just a glance of thanks to Trusova. Time for words later.

Trusova performs a hurried fighting retreat, fending off snapping jaws with her spear as the two get to the exit.

As Trusova turns to fend off their foul and hideous attacker, backing towards the door, Lambert slips right through it. Turning, he can see that the creature is too large to fit through the portal, but also that its horrific appendages can reach a long way into the room.

Every ghoulish skull on the bobbing, strangely suspended, multi-legged, sac-like monster screams when Wolke escapes, along with the one that rolled into the pit. Robbed of whatever prize is in the strongbox, the fiend surges forward, intent on having Trusova the Road Warden, intent on tearing her life from her.
OOC:
Defend this attack, Trusova. Then you can Banio can take your actions!

Trusova's spear whistles through the air as she spins it in tight defensive arcs, giving a smart thwack! as they strike the snapping maws that hunger for her soul.

With the creature momentarily dissuaded, she bolts for the exit, pushing Lambert through in front of her.

"We must seal the door!" she cries.

"Piss on that!" he cries back to her! "Leave it!"

But seeing that the woman is serious, he rolls his eyes and sets the box a few steps up along the staircase before racing back to put his shoulder to the door.

"Don’t get us killed!" he says, getting ready to push it closed!
