Nightal 27th ~ Bremen

You arrive at the sleepy town of Bremen - the most northwesterly of the Ten Towns on the west bank of Maer Dualdon at the mouth of the Shaengarne River. It was founded by dwarf prospectors and still caters for treasure-seekers who pan the riverbank.

The heart of the town is five run-down taverns standing in a semicircle around a central yard. But this is no beacon of revelry; it's a monument to dwarven stubbornness. Five dwarven brothers originally intended to build a tavern together, but each had assumed he would be the one to run the business. Since none of the brothers would work for the others, each built his own tavern, competing for Bremen's scarce customers. They also double as general stores, each selling the same provisions and supplies.

You are the only visitors at The Buried Treasures Inn. Cora, the innkeeper, is friendly, although a little tearful.

Twice in the past two months, residents of Bremen have had to mount search parties for their town speaker and oldest living resident, Dorbulgruf Shalescar. Twice they've found him wandering the frozen shores of the Shaengarne in heavy furs, with no memory of how he got there. Dorbulgruf, old even by dwarf standards, isn't long for this world. Many locals fear the same is true of Bremen if Auril's brutal winter does not abate.

Midwinter is a brutal time of year to be crossing the northwest wastes. Spearwinds flay the skin, mastodon-mounted frost giants hunt in the hills, and white dragons cross the skies. If a traveller is determined and foolhardy enough to brave the wastes, the least deadly course is to follow the frozen Shaengarne west before turning north along Shattered Valley.

Throughout the long journey to Bremen, Anders had been quiet. His wolf was rarely seen, and never heard. Only glimpses of tufted fur and a gleam of eyes let the party know it was still out there. A time or two, Anders went into a sort of trance only to come out with a sense of confidence as to direction or safety.

Upon reaching the town, he escorts the group to the Buried Treasures, itself a hidden treasure. He orders blubberdumps and some hot tea, and selects a table from the many open ones. It had been some time since he sat here, and though he maintains a predatory look, he also seems to relax some. Like a hunter preserving its strength. "We'll rest here for the night. I have some considering to do concerning our route. The safe path might have dangers unique to our purpose, though the more perilous paths are avoided for a reason. Regain your strength. You'll need it." Still he hadn't explained what the dangers were, nor what their goal was. Just that there was a ship in the horizon that housed memories.

Zin kept quiet through most of the trip, a sadness seeming to permeate his visage and color his interactions with the group. When the grouped stopped, the wood elf collected pieces of wood amidst foliage or forest. He handled the pieces with almost a serene reverence turning them over and examining them with an acute attention and care. Occasionally he would pocket the pieces and would be seen later working the wood with simple tools.

Bremen seemed to brighten Zin's mood. He was finding himself amused by dwarven culture and stubbornness having recently made friends with one of the stoic rock workers. Sitting at the table, Zin offered Shall I ask around about our route? Perhaps get some information about the latest dangers surrounding Bremen that we might avoid? The wood elf was obviously deferring to Anders' judgement and was trying to be helpful.

It takes Zin a time or two to get Anders attention. His mind seems to be elsewhere, with his focus in his mug. Finally, he looks up at Zin at the sound of his voice. For a split second the elf can see a glimpse of tragedy beneath the rangers façade, but it is quickly replaced by a hardening and a shrug. A shrug that says 'go ahead, it is no matter to me.' This is a common Anders shrug.

Bells had not recognized the Eastway Road because the last time she traveled along it's length, blizzard conditions had snowed out any distinguishing features. Anders was being his typical uncommunicative self questions bouncing off his retreating back leaving Bells to piece together their route once they hit Byrn Shander. Long had been the journey, not to mention dangerous was the night so Bells had thought the walled city would be their respite for the night. Bells was curious about the town she had never visited plus it was a chance to make acquaintances with a fellow speaker but Bells' mouth had been left gaping open as she motioned at the gate as the ranger trudged on.

The bard had to remind herself that this mission whatever it was obviously haunting Anders so he wanted to press on. A few more hours and surely they would be at his shack but when the road branched, the ranger continued west. Bless the man! Targos was closer with Ma's place beaconing with warmth and substance but it was not to be. Could the man not see the condition of the dogs even if he ignored his companions? Another town's gate passed. Just where were they going? Okto provided an idea stating Bremen lay at the end of the road. Bells tried to concentrate on the destination as her stamina was close to its end. Surely Anders would stop in Bremen.

Bells was usually good to sing a few songs for her dinner and bed at any tavern but tonight it would have to be cold hard metal coin like any other customer as the bard was drained. Hot tea at least started the unthawing process but the north was just too damn cold! I didn't realize we were coming to Bremen, a pointed look flashed toward the ranger. I have a couple matters of importance to take care of here. Will we give the dogs the day to recover?

"Do what you must. I have my own matters to attend to before we begin the next leg of our journey." There was scouting to be done. Questions to be asked of the right people. A day would give him time to ready the way, and it would allow the others time to prepare for what lay ahead.

Are we almost to our destination? Do we need anything more than we have? Anders....you have to communicate *something* if we are going to be successful in helping you. Bells was so tired she couldn't help the whiney plea that entered her voice, Come on, pleaseeeee. Let's not make this song end as tale of warning about why people on your side should not be kept in the dark.

I rolled more out of curiosity because I think players have free will but if you want to go with it then be my guest. I gave disadvantage as she is exhausted, not to mention, how Bells tends to annoy him.

"The truth is that I know not what to expect. We seek a ship long lost to the ice. You are already equipped for travel. There should be nothing resembling life at our destination, but the tundra has a way of utilizing all things supposedly forgotten. The dangers will likely be in the journey, but you have all been prepared for that. If there is any danger at the skeleton of the ship, it will likely be in the form of angered spirits, unable to rest in this hellhole. And in the form of my own demons."

I think investigation would be the skill? Zin is going to try to gain any information on the lost boat and dangers along the route that Anders talked about.

Just in case adding Psychic Knack, which I keep forgetting about :)

I am more familiar with your demons than I care to be but I intend to see you set free from whatever is gripping you. Patting Anders hand across the table, before stifling a yawn, The day's rest will be beneficial. Timber was balking at the end of the trip, falling down at every opportunity. I think the squirrel you provided proved to be the most effective in setting that trunk upright. I'll be sure to save some back for when conditions get severe as an added incentive. After this meal, I'm done with whatever is left of the night.

After Zin excused himself, Bells' eyes follow the elf as he deftly crossed the dining room with a soft tread that danced around a stumbling patron and a chair extended into the pathway. By his grace, the bard would never guess Zin had traveled the same distance as she herself felt her feet to be leaden. But as weary as she was, Bells noticed it was not to a room above the elf disappeared.

"Not demons like these," Anders mutters into his tea as Bells walks away.

Investigation is more about puzzling things out. It could be a mixed check (cha+investigation) to reflect interviewing people, piecing together their stories, etc. But it's pretty irrelevant with that psychic knack roll, right?
[ +- ] INT: Investigation
The Dark Duchess's name casts a long shadow - a raiding ship that Bremen remembers and whose absence Bremen doesn't miss. Zin sifts through the rumours and keeps the ones that seem at least plausible.

Shaftskarl
The tavernkeepers of Five-Tavern Center in Bremen are bemoaning their dwindling supplies of ale and spirits, but they’ve heard rumours of a pirate ship stuck in the ice off the coast - and where there’s a pirate ship, there might be rum! If there's no rum, then there might be treasure!!!

Amber
"Folk say Frostmaiden lives on misty isle hidden among bergs in Sea o' Moving Ice. There's mighty strange whale with boat on back that swims in those frigid waters. I bet whale knows where ship lies. You can catch whale at Angajuk's Bell, an old anchorage, but you must ring bell hanging by pier to call it."

Droblin
"Tha'll not catch me o'er there. Ice trolls abound. Sisters say troll hearts have magic about them. Tha's supposed to eat them or summat. Or bury 'em. Sisters would know. Mebbe trade 'em too."

Creaks in the bed greeted Bells as she stretched awake. First things first, the Speaker knew she needed to contact Olivessa to find who she needed to speak to secure the whale oil. After receiving an answer thus being armed with information, Bells began to set herself to rights.

It wasn't exactly early morning when Bells emerged from her room looking fresh even if muscles screamed of too much time on the sled. Breakfast was a simple affair of porridge with a biscuit(roll) that needed to be soaked in the tea to keep from breaking a tooth. Smiling up at the server,Thanks, it looks hearty. Now, perhaps you could also help me with another task of mine. I am looking for the whereabouts of a Mistress Mulphoon.

Helka

Helka is the oil merchant, but she's stuck in Bremen and refuses to go out to get more oil as the journey is too dangerous. Her plan was to go to Angajuk's Bell and ask a talking sperm whale to take her to the whalers on the Moving Ice. She hoped to tell Angajuk that the whalers are fishers and the casks contain fish oil, not whale oil, so as not to upset the whale. She'll pay you 150 gold pieces if you want to make the trip and bring back six casks of oil.

Dreams of the wolf hunting the caribou. The lone wolf, choosing to leave behind the pack. Crashing through snow banks, eating only enough to keep the belly burning with hunger. It had been cursed to stand alone. The first pack, dead. The last pack, deserted. The wolf finds itself on shallow ice, and then it cracks. The lone wolf is drowning.

Anders awakes with a sweat. With grim determination, he sets about his task.
Throughout the next day, not a single set of eyes spots Anders or his wolf. The two are out hunting and scouting. They examine tracks, check nearby passes, and find safe routes through the snow. It only covers a small distance from town, but any small distance of safety is a blessing. At lunch, he eats the heart of a snowshoe hare he had caught. The heart was the source of its strength and survival, and Anders needs every ounce of that he can spare.

Crag cats
Out in the snows, Anders catches a bloodchilling human scream of terror.

Hunters of Men, Snow Butchers, Blood on the Snow - the barbarians had many names for Crag Cats, but they also called them White Lies for the human screams they imitated to lure and corral people.

Anders triangulates their position from the screams and their bone-sharded scat. From their tracks, Anders estimates three territorial prides, but that territoriality will work to his advantage as it allows him to weave a route through the edges of their domains.
OOC:
Heh. I'd pre-rolled the encounters (that was all the hidden rolls at the end of Caer-Dineval).

Well done. You'll avoid being ambushed by stealthy crag cats.

Knowing that a close knit community can be both a blessing and a curse, Bells wanted to reassure Cora that no ill was intended toward Mistress Mulphoon without compromising her privacy too much. Who knew the prevailing attitude toward Huarwar but a mother's heart would always be uneasy not knowing the fate of a child especially a wayward one so Bells wanted to offer what peace she could. Plus at his age, Huarwar might have been needed to supplement the family. If she accepted the boy as a responsibility then his family must not suffer for it. Bells intended to see for herself the situation. I carry good news from a distant relative that I need to deliver. Today is a good day to receive a bit of unexpected cheer, don't you think?

Zinvaris took in the rumors and information, privately chuckling at the idea of a whale with a ship on its back. Where are the Sisters? Do they have a grove nearby?

Zin flexed his mind trying to recall what he knew about ice trolls.
