Stephen Burnsworth of Boston, Mass, met his end in Devil's Canyon, California. Having been stabilised after a near-deadly attack by supernatural creatures, his caretaker, Mortician - Gerald Newcomber decided to open up the wounds to fix them better. It did not end well.

Sorry, yes this is a character in one of my 1920s Call of Cthulhu games. Amy similarity to people living or dead is coincidental.
