OOC:
Library Use = 70%

I imagine Percival would have a membership at Atheneum already, as I envision him being a regular at both libraries (hell, depending on his financials he may be planning to contribute to the John Hay library for expansion due to the increasing collection).

The plan is to look into the history of other houses (and possibly businesses) in the area, looking for linking factors. A tunnel has to lead somewhere, and having an idea of where those other "somewheres" might be could prove useful. It may also uncover more about the history of Winscott's house.

Sounds totally reasonable. Information Percival finds will follow.

I will spend the four points of luck on the Library use. What does Gregory know as far as Occult stories or history of the house?

two questions on failed skills and luck:

1. Do we keep track of failed skill rolls, in regards to XP/increasing skills? Not sure how "leveling up" works in CoC.

2. There's a variant rule about possibly regenerating luck the beginning of every game session. Is that in play here, or what we have is it? I'm fine either way, just wondering.

Good questions!

If we were playing over the table, you would put a tick next to every skill you succeed in, without the aid of a bonus die, luck or pushing. As the end of the scenario, you make an improvement check against each (as we did with EDU) and if you fail, you gain 1d10. What I tend to do in PBP is have a thread where I keep track of these skills. (which is ready, and I will add these to.)

Luck improvement checks happen over the table at the beginning of a new session. As this scenario is a one shot, meant to take 2-3 hours in real time, so as this is PBP, this rule won't come into play. In my campaign games, I generally give luck rolls after a chapter or if they're particularly long or harrowing, sometimes in between.

Save your Luck, it won't gain you any more than the others have found and Percival finds a very interesting object at the Atheanium.

As for occult, although nothing comes to mind related to this specific house, Gregory is aware of a history of both witchcraft in Providence and supernatural events in the area near Power Street.

Percival doesn't find anything recorded about tunnels but in the archives of colonial materials he finds a letter from one Jacob Bishop.

After a successful evening of research, you meet up to discuss what you found and to discuss what equipment you might take with you.

Assuming such a letter would not be available to check out like a common library book, Percival would take the time to copy the letter verbatim, going so far as to have Mr. Bancroft and Mr. Wolf both read the letter and the copy to verify no alterations or liberties were taken.

As Harmon reads the transcript, he ponders all that they have learned. "What is written on this transcript does match what we found in the Brown library. There are tunnels about town that were used to smuggle slaves. This one being bricked off does match both what Josh said and what was written in the transcript."
Harmon frowns as he rereads the portion of the letter discussing the dead bodies.
"Though what they wrote about the dead bodies troubles me. I don't know what kind of person would do something that barbaric. This should serve as a warning to us, though it has been a long time since that event who knows what kind of ruffian has taken home in those tunnels. Personally I will be taking along my handy pistol. What about the rest of you?" He pats his pistol as he says this.

"It would be prudent of me to suggest that, perhaps, we abandon this course of action," Dr. Cross suggests. "However, as I know it is... highly unlikely... that any of us will bow out of this little excursion, I agree with Mr. Crankovitch that it would be best to be mindful of personal safety."

He purses his lips, making a thin line before continuing. "Lights, naturally. A prybar. A pick perhaps? Rope? Hammer and pitons might be useful as well. I might also suggest a canary in a small cage."

"I couldn't abandon this mystery now If I wanted to," Leland replies incredulously. "I am far to intrigued to bow out now."
He rummages through his shoulder bag as he talks. "Yes, I to would like to grab a few things from home before we set out. A handgun to be sure," he says, nodding in Harmon's direction. I should also like to grab some extra notebooks, pens, and pencils. Whatever we find down there needs to be documented as we go.

Gregory looks around at the others and hefts up his large briefcase.

"With Joshua's permission, I can tell you all that I would not give up such a mysterious tunnel and chance for exploration for anything," he says. "This sort of history is enough to give me hope of discovering proof of real haunting. I shall bring my specialized instruments, and have already fetched my shotgun from my automobile."

Real haunting or real hunting who can be sure, it may just be the work of a wild animal. But I gree this tunnel became much more interesting. And if we have to buy some equipment to help us let us do it together, no sense in buying thing several times; except for firearms of course.

OK, you have the whole day tomorrow to do your shopping, add any items you intend to buy to your character sheet. if it's something especially expensive, let me know and we'll see if you can get it. Let me know when you're ready to return to the house.

Ooc: Leland is ready. He just retrieved his .45, extra ammo, and a few notebooks, pencils, etc. from home. He also grabs a couple of handbooks on the occult. Books dealing with occult imagery, symbols, etc. (if that is within reason). The .45 is in addition to the Derringer he already carries on his person. Also, a canteen of water and a couple of sammiches. Flashlight with extra batteries. If anyone wants to pool their money, as Max suggested, to buy any equipment Leland will throw in what he can. Just let me know.

Max will try to buy a miner's helmet with a frontal lamp, a backpack, a gourd and a .45 revolver with munition. And he will help with whatever is left for ropes and other materials.
