The Darkness Beneath the Hill

"Well, it is a footprint to be sure," Leland says rubbing his chin absently. "Whether or not it is Josh's remains to be seen.
The book dealer shakes his head as if coming out of a dream and looks around perplexed. "Why in the world would Josh come down here on his own like this? Why no note left for us? I'm not afraid to admit that I do not like this. I do not like this at all."

I concur, this is a bit queer. He should have left a note, but you know how sometimes people get excited and can't wait any longer to discover new things.

As the others navigate, Pablo continues to mark their route with chalk, and stops to take pictures of the found items, including the human remains. He says a short prayer in Spanish that his abuela taught him as a child, towards respect for the dead. The uneasy feeling he has about this place dampens a bit as the words of faith help.

Looking at Gregory, half-jokingly "Careful what you say Gregory, you never know who's listening." as he continues to follow the group.

OOC:
Who's leading the way, and is it south or west?
Nov 2, 2022 12:21 pm
OOC:
Percival will be towards the middle, minding the canary (but not oblivious to their surroundings).

As for direction, south seems to be the direction of the clues, but the Doc will go wherever the group heads.

OOC:
Harmon will take some pictures of the clothing for future reference. He will follow the others once they start moving.

OOC:
Gregory will preferably defer to Leland who found the latest footprint and go second behind him, or if urged will go first.

I guess Max will lead, after all he is used to inconfortable situations.

Ooc: How wide is this tunnel? Wide enough for side by side travel or just single file?
Nov 2, 2022 6:13 pm
OOC:
The caverns are pretty wide but variable, ranging from 20 feet to 40 feet across at some points.

The opening leads to a downward sloping passage that twists and turns and after about half a mile and a depth of 200 feet you come around a bend to see a steady, dim light. The passage straightens out and the light ahead grows brighter though the light source remains unknown. Soon, the passage opens into an enormous chamber lit by phosphorescent lichen. (1)

From here, you see the tunnels are lit by this lichen, as if filled with candles. This eerie twilight makes your miners lamps create shadows that dance and twist along the walls. As you enter, you see tha walls have been decorated with intricate carvings, including natural columns that tower to the ceiling a hundred feet above. The carvings appear very old and covered with lichen, much of the fine work appears to have been damaged. Around 50 feet of the eastern wall has collapsed, obliterating any carvings.

Max looks with interest the old carving and try to see if it was done on an old structure on simply on natural cavern.

Gregory appears delighted by the eerie look of the phosphorescent lichen. He crouches down to open his briefcase and take a photograph with his flash camera.

Pablo sees Gregory taking a picture, curious about his equipment and methodology. "Old chap, with the lighting conditions here, it might be difficult to get a decent shot, even with this miraculous new "flashing" technology. Let me give you some tips."
OOC:
montage of Pablo showing Gregory different angles, lighting, camera modes
He takes the same picture of lichen with Gregory's camera

"And that's how it's done old chap." giving Gregory a wink, then walking over to the intricate carvings to further investigate. He doesn't know a damn thing about the history behind all this, but it sure looks interesting, as Pablo takes more pictures.

"Incredible," Leland says, in breathless awe. "I can not believe what I am seeing. In Providence, Rhode Island no less. Leland takes out his notebook and begins to copy some of the carvings into it.

[Ooc: Leland will try using his History and Occult knowledge to see if anything jogs his memory as he scribbles.]

I'll give you something if you make a hard Occult, Leland. You could push, that would involve digging through that collapsed east wall thinking you see something you recognise but fail and there'll be a consequence.. You'll need to hit 50% of your skill. The alternative might be burning 30-something luck.

Harmon gives a whistle as he admires the lichen. Surely everyone would want to see this.
We could sell tickets for a tour.
He observes the carvings and tries to see if he recognizes any of then.

Ooc: Ok, so what is a hard Occult? And on the push, by hit, you mean roll under 50 or over? Hard Occult and push are two different things?
