It's worse than you think

You make your way into the great hall. Seldom is the whole Tomorrow Legion gathered in one place, and its an impressive sight. The majority of the force are humans, with dwarves making up a significant minority. They are a huge variety of other peoples though. A Quick Flex Alien stands next to a Torval Sword Fist who's conversing with an Atlantean. A pack of Dog Boys circles around a Wolfen, listening attentively to his instruction. There's even a Dragon Hatchling.

Suddenly a hush follows over the throng and all eyes turn to the central dais. A tall human with long dark hair and a beard going to gray steps onto the stage. He wears heavy cyber-knight armor, and his red cape swishes and swirls around him. It's Lord Coake, head of the Cyber-Knight order and one of the founders of the Legion.

"Greetings my fellow Legionnaires. I've called you all here on a matter of grave import. There seems to be little time to waste, so I'll get right to it. Over the last several days, beginning at the dawn of the Winter Solstice, rifts have begun opening and disgorging huge forces of demons and deevils into the world. It seems the hosts of Hell are invading Earth."

Cass leads the collective gasp in shock. She nudges Lanval beside her and whispers, "Not just the rift we saw then. Perhaps the source of the Deevils, too?"

Lanval nods. "With all that power pouring into the ley lines, a cascade of rifts is no surprise. Odd if it is mostly Deevils though." Lanval remarks. "I would expect the rifts to open to random locations."

Lord Coake continues. "What's more, while the creatures are attacking military forces and settlements all across the continent, they also seem to be fighting each other. We've gotten several reports of demons and deevils locked in ferocious combat. From everything we've seen we believe the forces of Hades and Dyval are at war, and they've made Earth their battleground."

Lanval sucked in his breath. "Now that's more like what I would expect." Lanval sighs. "But if this is a planned offensive, they would have to have known the portals would open and stay open long enough to be worth fighting over. I'd love to know how they're doing that."

Cass frowns even further. She all but itches to run out the back and plunge into the thick of it. Let the big boys handle a trip to hell to shut down these portals, there are innocents to protect.

She stifles that impulse. What she learns next might help her save even more lives.

"Only one way to find out, go through a portal and start asking the hard questions."

"With the solstice behind us, I don't think anyone will be going to hell without the aid of a legendary magician. But they won't have reinforcements, either. Not unless they've managed to stabilize the gateway, and the Federation and Coalition will certainly have something to say about that." Adatahl furrowed his brow. Though well versed in his unique brand of magicks, he was not at all familiar with interdimensional warfare. He knew Earth itself was a prize, rich in magical power, but not even the Splugorth had managed to lay claim to it. It fought back in extraordinary ways.

The prospect of fighting in another war, though, settled coldly in the pit of his stomach. Even had they not the means to conquer and lay waste, the potential for bloodshed was astronomical.
