Good Day, All.
New member weighing in, here.
Not new to RPGs, as I've been skipping in-and-out of the hobby since the D&D Red/Blue Box days in the mid-70s. Most recently GM'd a D&D 5e group for a couple of years up until 2020 pandemic lockdowns. I have been mostly poking around in new game systems, online game design discussions, and some solo RPGs ( mostly Ironsworn and Ironsworn: Starforged ), between then and now.
I am relatively new to PbP, having participated as a player in one freeform/FKR PbP game which eventually came apart, since there had been no "session zero", and it become pretty clear that the Players had radically different goals & play styles, and the GM did little to manage the game.
I'm currently working my way through the guides, video, and doing some independent research on PbP running/playing best practices.
Ultimately, I'd like to GM one-or-more PbP games - but right now I think I need to get my feet wet as a Player, to get familiar with the format.
If I had a game/system "wishlist" or set of preferences for PbP games, they'd probably run like this:
System(s): Pretty much open to any system. I can handle large amounts of "crunch" if the system requires it, but as a GM I am definitely drawn to lightweight/freeform/FKR game approaches.
Genre(s): Science Fiction, Science Fantasy, Post-Apocalyptic, Alternate History, etc. Basically leaning away from Fantasy, although I'm content dropping fantasy elements into any gene ( e.g. Dishonored = Alternate History + Fantasy ) - I would just prefer someone different than D&D style Fantasy right now.
Game Length: I think "limited run" of one adventure arc, with an option to continue, have Players bow out ( or join ), or wrap up the game entirely, at the end of each "adventure" would be ideal. Potentially longer than one-shot adventure, but commitment revisited on an adventure-by-adventure basis.
Posting Frequency: Daily or X-times-a-week. Longer than that, and I think keeping focus would be a challenge. I can't commit reliably to multiple posts-per-day, although I can see circumstances where that could work: e.g. two Characters are having a 1:1 conversation in the game world, and both Players are able to post with higher frequency.
Posting Style: You can probably tell from this post that I write a lot :P I definitely skew heavily to descriptive prose-heavy posts. I'm likely to tuck a die-roll in there, if needs be, in an attempt to speed things along for GM resolution, but I'm fine being told to roll something else instead, or the GM ignoring the roll ( trying to assist, not steer ).
Game Focus: I like games which focus on Discovery, Story, and Character Development, and less on Combat - although I think a game needs a certain level of action to keep the game pacing alive, and Combat is an acceptable way to do that. Open to some combat, I'm just not interested in it being the primary game focus.
I think that's more-than-enough to hit you with on my first posting :D
I look forward to getting to know you all, and the site - and hopefully getting into a game or two.
Thanks,
