Boseman High School Shenanigans: Episode 1

Zach nods and follows Fred, bat ready in one hand, phone in the other. "You open it, I'll check inside. If I die, tell my sister she stinks." They had been joking the whole time, but now in the asylum proper, the joke rings hollow. The only part that sticks in Zach's mind is if I die, and it doesn't feel very amusing to him.

Fred nods, wondering what kind of eye poking Zach is expecting but then shivers, deciding THAT was a thought thread that did not need to be followed.

He stands to the side and slides the viewing plate open, using both hands to try and do it evenly and slowly, and hopefully not metal-screechily.

"We might as well, Freddie. We're here and I'm curious what's on the other side. Imagine being locked up in here. What a freakin' nightmare. Let's check a few or maybe we should check them all, and check one out inside if the door opens?"

Better Freddie than her, Emily thinks, peeking through that sliding door. She half imagines a tentacled limb snaking out through the panel.

"What if they are… like… snatching people and making a body double?" Lily says, letting her mind run wild with all types of sci-fi ideas; trying them on for size and seeing which one sounds the least ridiculous of all.

"And everyone that got copied is stuck down here in these rooms…"

Fred finds that the small metal door appears to have not been used in some time, and it seems like it's jammed shut... until he comes onto it. The resulting metallic screech as it finally opens resounds throughout the nearly pitch black hallway, setting several of the teens' teeth on edge.

When nothing emerges from the dark to consume the kids, Zach shines his light into the hole, and the room beyond. The windowless space behind the door is empty, and clearly used to be a cell. There's no window (no surprise, as this is the basement) and the space isn't bigger than about eight feet by ten feet. Zach sees the rusted remains of a bedframe, some broken pieces of pottery on the floor, and something lying in a heap -- a tangle of straps or a harness of something. The stained walls, he sees as he aims his light around the room, are padded.

"There's something in there," Zach says as he peeks in through the viewing hole. His quip earlier comes back to him. That he would have been locked up here if he had just been born a bit earlier. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but the thought chills him now. And he also questions why he would have said such a thing to a group of people he's not even out to. What if one of them asks about it later?

Pushing those thoughts aside, he leans forward and tries to nudge the bundle lying on the floor with his baseball bat while continuing to shine his light on it in an attempt to find out what it is, but it is out of reach. "Open the actual door," he says. "I want to know what that is."

OOC:
The bundle is not within reach of the door, even if you put your whole arm and bat through. And for reference, the open slot is *maybe* one foot by one foot.

"What do you see? Is it shiny?"

Freddie will jimmy with the latch on the door. "This might be even louder," he says before trying to honestly open it.

"Come on. Tell us! What's in there? Is it really bad?"

The horrible place was grating at Emily's nerves but a part of her wanted to explore and know all the secrets that were buried here. She couldn't help but imagine the misery that must have taken place behind these doors and hallways.

"It's not shiny," Zach says as he steps back a bit to let Fred try to pull open the door. "It looks like a harness. Maybe a straightjacket." His eyes flit to Lily as he says that word and through his increasing tension, a snort of laughter escapes him even as he's still definitely scared. The weird contrast of being in a damn scary place like this and having his friends with him to joke with is leading to a rather conflicted mental state in the boy.

The heavy latch is corroded and difficult to work, Fred finds...

Make a Strength or appropriate skill test, Fred, based on your approach.

A little teenaged vigor wins the day when Freddie comes onto the bolt and eventually gets it unstuck and working. The classic click-klatch-clack sound echoes in the nearly empty corridor, then the boy is pulling the door open. The smell that comes from the room is unsettling. Not putrid or rancid, but so stale and musty... with some faint smell of the different people who must have been kept isolated in this room, years ago. It's a hard smell to place, but it's one they won't soon forget.

Lights held up from the threshold verify Zach's claim: there's the old bedframe with it's rusted springs and metal slats, there are plainly decorated ceramic sherds on the floor in the middle of the room, and there's the tangle of partly rotten fabric and leather. When the explorers get closer, walking quietly into the room, it does look like some kind of old straightjacket or restraining harness, but a heavy one, something much more robust than a jacket with sleeves that fasten behind the back. For example, this garment appears to have once had headgear as well, based on the remains.
Jul 5, 2023 5:25 am
"Oh damn," Zach mutters to himself. He places his bat down on the ground and then reaches for the restraining gear to lift it up and give them all a proper look at what it looks like in whole. "This thing is a lot creepier than I expected."
Jul 5, 2023 4:59 pm
Indeed, the harness is creepy. While it’s in poor shape, there’s enough structure left to suggest that it had straps for the groin and thighs, the torso, the arms, the head… and some kind of often-used leather bite plate.
OOC:
Does everyone go into the room?
Jul 5, 2023 5:44 pm
Freddie has seen too many horror movies to fall for the old, everyone foolishly goes into the jail cell at once shenanigans. "Let's not all go in there at once. That's a classic alien and ghost trap, then we'd be hooped."

Freddie stays outside.

OOC:
Probably clear from context, but for reference: Zach is inside the cell

"I'm super happy to stay right here, thank you very much. That thing looks nasty and the room stinks. What the hell did they do to people here? Do you think...?

Emily stops midsentence, then continues her thoughts, a horrified expression beginning to take shape on her face as she thinks the ideas through. "Do you think the patients here have come back for revenge and are terrorizing the teachers, making them go mad?"
Jul 5, 2023 6:19 pm
"It's a more likely idea than aliens creating evil doppelgangers," Zach replies. "Still unlikely, but at least possible." He's still holding up the weird restraining gear, creeped out and fascinated by it at the same time. "Does any of you know what that weird goo was that we walked through earlier? That's what I don't get here."

"Well…" Lily starts, swallowing the urge to take pictures of this place for a story. "… none of this seems relevant to right now, does it? This is all old. Creepy as shit, but old. It doesn’t seem like anyones been here for a long time."

Lily wonders if they haven’t come the wrong way entirely. They took the obvious route…
